Future ecosystems will be shaped by forest capacity to recover from stress and adapt to accelerating change. Forests provide the structural foundation for much of the planet’s biodiversity, and they deliver the resources needed to maintain food webs and many of the services on which humans depend. This project initiated a global effort to understand the changes happening now and their implications for biodiversity. The initiative now engages over 100 collaborators from Europe, North America, South America, and Asia. Our early results have quantified the basic biogeography of fruit, seed, and nut production, how it is controlled by the condition of individual trees, and how those responses translate to landscape and continental shifts. Foundational discoveries include i) fruit, seed, and nut production is › 200 times higher in the wet tropics than high latitudes, driven by a 100-fold difference in seeds per tree of a given size, ii) fruit production declines as trees mature, countering the long-standing belief that it continues to increase allometrically, iii) globally, seed production declines with high fertility levels, also counter to expectation, and iv) angiosperms have higher fecundity than gymnosperms, potentially contributing to their disproportionate success since they evolved in the Cretaceous.

The 2nd year of BEYOND witnessed very dynamic activity toward the goal of creating a new paradigm of epidemiological surveillance. 2022 benefitted from the foundations set in the 1st year for the 7 WPs and 3 working groups and the engagement of doctoral students (5 in progress in 2022). The intensity of the work was reflected in the content of the shared storage space on INRAE’s NextCloud that now contains 18 main folders in the directory housing hundreds of files occupying 2.9 GB and accessible to 37 registered users. We achieved important milestones including the establishment of the structure of the data catalog portal that is now available and visible for the project at https://beyond.biosp.inrae.fr/. Secondly, a robust version of the tropolink Webapp for constructing geographic networks resulting from air-mass movement was delivered: https://tropolink.fr and tested by users. Thirdly, we advanced the development of molecular detection and genotyping methods for several pathogens including the CABYV and WMV viruses in aphids, Oidium neolycopersici, Fusarium proliferatum, Flavescence Dorée phytoplasma and Ca. Liberibacter asiaticus, in large part thanks to the technical competence hired specifically for the project. Fourthly, a new text-mining tool was developed: Psylve, a text-to-ontology information extraction framework for the occurrence of plant pathogen vectors. espace In the 2nd year, project participants made about a dozen oral or poster presentations about BEYOND at various conferences. The Pondering BEYOND series held 7 webinars: https://www6.inrae.fr/beyond/Open-Events. espace Project partners were very active in leveraging BEYOND to obtain additional funding and added 86431€ of related activities in 5 additional projects in 2022.

PHENOME-EMPHASIS is a versatile infrastructure that characterises hundreds of genotypes of different plant species for genetic analyses under diverse environmental scenarios of climate change and agro-ecology (drought, high CO2, high temperatures, diseases, mixed crops). The infrastructure includes (i) four installations in controlled conditions; (ii) two field installations with large rainout shelters and a free-air carbon enrichment (FACE) system; (iii) three field installations equipped with high throughput sensors and vectors. All installations can handle hundreds of genotypes, manipulate and/or control environmental conditions, and are equipped with imaging analysis pipelines. (iv) two installations provide access to additional tools and methods for characterising high throughput, targeted biochemical phenomics. They are accessible to public and private users via a transparent process. Methodological projects (i) improve trait measurements in particular for biotic interactions (agroecology) using AI and models. Algorithms for outdoor analyses are encapsulated into an open software, 4P; (ii) Organise phenotypic data allowing their FAIR usage by a wide scientific community. A specific information system (PHIS) is developed and deployed in French and European installations. PHENOME-EMPHASIS relies on and facilitates the development of technology-provider SMEs for phenotyping and precision agriculture. Networking and training target academic groups, seed companies, SMEs and extension services. PHENOME-EMPHASIS also accompanies the expansion of phenotyping tools and methods towards 2nd and 3rd circles of users (row crops communities and a wide range of experimental stations of partners) through the PEPR-supported AgroEcoPhen project. PHENOME-EMPHASIS leaders coordinate and are WP leaders in a Horizon Europe INFRA-TECH (PHENET) and are WP leads in the implementation phase for an ESFRI infrastructure (EMPHASIS)
