The anthropogenic climate changes result from emissions of greenhouse gases, in particular carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and CFC's. The total emissions of these gases are increasing and are expected to lead to an increase in global mean temperature of 1.4 to 5.8 °C. This range expresses the variation in scenarios for future emissions of greenhouse gases an uncertainties in the global climate models. Even a stabilisation of the emissions at the current level will lead to a global temperature increase of 1 °C. Results of global and regional climate models show the following tendencies for climate change in Denmark during the period 1990 to 2100. The annual mean temperature will increase by 3-5°C. The winter precipitation will increase by 20-40%, whereas the precipitation during the summer period will decline by 10-25%. There will be more episodes of heavy rainfall, in particular during autumn. Denmark has ratified the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the associated Kyoto Protocol, which requires industrialised countries to reduce their emissions by 5%. Denmark must reduce its emissions by 21% in 2008-12 compared with 1990. Without additional measures, the emissions from Denmark are expected increase by 13%. Even with a correction for electricity import in the base year and electricity export in the commitment period, a reduction of only 9% is expected.

    Research question: Northern Europe experiences an increasingly wet climate, leading to more frequent and severe fluvial flood events. Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) is becoming recognised as a valuable yet under-utilised means to alleviating negative effects of a changing climate. This however, necessitates a new and different collaboration between land-owners and stakeholders interested in protecting urban structures and as a result, novel ways of understanding and organising EbA emerge across Europe. One example, using the approach of Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) is presented in this paper.Methodology: Farmers along the second longest watercourse in Denmark could be instrumental in allowing flooding on farmland to protect urban infrastructures. We conduct a choice experiment among farmers located in vicinity to the river ‘Storåen’ in order to assess their willingness to accept a contract that would allow the local municipality to periodically flood farmland in order to avoid or limit urban flooding from Storåen. The experiment aims to estimate the costs of getting farmers to participate in the scheme, which would represent (some of) the costs of reducing climate change problems in the town of Holstebro. In a number of choice occasions, farmers were asked to select between either no contract or contracts characterised by a set of positive and negative attributes, including a whether or not to require specific flood resistant crops or not; whether to allow for a compensation in case of crop loss or not; the type of negotiation situation and finally the level of payment to the farmer for including his/her land in the inundation control scheme. Findings: Results indicate that farmers on average would prefer not to enter a contract. If they were to agree on a contract they would prefer a compensation for lost crops; to negotiate collectively with other farmers and as expected would prefer higher rather than lower yearly payments. Surprisingly, the data did not show a significant preference for or against a requirement to grow flood resistant crops. A contract that would allow for compensation and based on individual negotiation would on average require a yearly payment of 309euro/ha.Significance for practical solutions: This type of analysis investigates attitudes and preferences of land owners, which are essential when dealing with Ecosystem-based Adaptation. Past experience shows that without the agreement of land owners or the appropriate compensation level, voluntary schemes will not function at the necessary scale.

    Digital transformation takes longer and faces more difficulties than expected. Especially the implementation stage of the digital transformation has become a high priority on management agendas. While much research has been done on the role of the top manager in digital transformations, we know less about the middle manager. This paper aims to advance our understanding of the role of middle managers when digital transformation is facing difficulties in the implementation stage. The paper presents the concept of middle managers’ unintentional de-legitimation practices, which is empirically grounded in an 18 months organizational ethnographic study of digital transformation in a Danish financial institution and derived from literature on discursive legitimation practices. The concept offers a new empirical and theoretical understanding of interruptions to digital transformation by drawing attention to enthusiastic middle managers’ unintentional discursive practices when legitimizing the digital transformation. It is not claimed that the middle manager’s discursive legitimation practice is the only interruption to successfully implementing digital technology, as discourse is simply one among many social practices in the complex and emergent nature of middle managing digital transformation. However, the paper suggests that a better understanding of the potential for discursive legitimation practices could provide some basis for improving how middle managers affect employees during digital transformation processes. The paper also contributes to literature on middle management interruptions to strategic change by drawing attention to how enthusiastic middle managers’ unintentional de-legitimation practices can negatively influence equally engaged employees working in an environment, which on paper should be ready for the digital transformation, thus delaying the organizational change.

    This paper explores the notion of ‘repair’ in relation to no-till farm practices and asks what new beginnings look like in this context. Taking its departure in the windy spring fields of mid-West Jutland in Denmark, and conventional farmers’ different incitements and troubles related to no-till practices, this paper will address how no-till practices confronts dominating farming paradigms build on a premise of high yield efficiency, while simultaneously maintaining patterns of short-term, high yield systems. I will argue that sustainable repair work in agro-industrial settings often fail to transform agricultural practices because it fails to accommodate or consider the implications of what it means to be a farmer in a short-sighted, industrialised agrarian world. Repairing agrarian worlds The plough has historically been seen as a technology of modernity paving the way for unprecedented growth, progress and weed control. Tilling allowed, and still allows farmers, to “reset” their fields every year by turning the soil around and thereby combating weeds and other unwanted species. However, today’s climate challenges – erosion, drought, GHG emissions and more - require “healthier” soils, and tilled soils are vulnerable to erosion and mud slides caused by extreme drought and heavy rainfalls. Thus, ploughing is today problematized, and no-till (NT) is offered by agro-scientists as a ‘sustainable’ alternative to restore soil structure and reduce GHG emissions. But how to begin again as a farmer who have used the plough for decades and for whom the plough is as much a technology of wonder allowing high yields, as one of climate disasters? Based on field work among an ERFA group (i.e. an experience exchange group) consisting of eight conventional farmers in Denmark who all, for different reasons, have decided to remove the plough from their production system, I will show how not tilling the soil introduces new challenges unfit for the demands of the modern farming industry, and reinforces old patterns of maintenance and accommodation of status quo. Discussing the concept of repair, I will show how the lack of agro-scientists in understanding and integrating the demand of farmers and their perception of repair-work in the scientific strategies around agricultural transformation limits the way in which sustainable transformation is feasible, and how “tweaking” sustainable initiatives becomes a repair-strategy for the farmers to secure their high yield.

    The digital transition of manufacturing shop floors makes topical anempirical study of designing a cybernetic system to monitor and control theperformance of smart manufacturing. This paper uses Transdisciplinary DesignScience (TDS) to explore how a company producing large products designs andevaluates a cybernetic system providing the needed functionalities to monitor andcontrol an unpaced manufacturing line. TDS involves an exploration of a solution,designing the cybernetic system, followed by an explanatory elaboration of theories.By studying the exploration and explanation through the lens of the means-end analysis the paper shows that the means to enable a digital transition of themanufacturing shop floor have a transdisciplinary nature; the transfer of meansacross disciplinary boundaries is either to translate or transform.

    Authors: Hassall Thomsen, Line Hassall;

    At a time where journalistic production is undergoing rapid change and ever growing competition, so is the room from which the news emerges. As broadcasters visit each other in order to mimic each others’ practices, rooms and technology, a new type of newsroom that has moved from the classical square one, to a round multi media one is now becoming the setting for both national TV news bulletins in both Denmark and the UK. The aim with this paper is to explore this new newsroom and what it means to the journalists in it. The paper will seek to answer questions such as; How does the physical room affect the social interactions in it? What does the organisation of people and technology in the newsroom do for the journalistic working process? And which hierarchal structure does the room feed into? While investigating symbolic and face to face interaction between journalists in and with the newsroom it intends to map out how the setting affects journalistic culture of practice. Drawing on recent fieldwork at BBC News, DRs TV Avisen and ITV News as well as TV2 Nyhederne, I will investigate this new trend in newsrooms from both Public Broadcasters to more commercial broadcasters in both UK and Denmark. While the main focus will be on the scene of news making, the newsroom, I will also take into account the boundaries of that room, in order to reflect on just where habits and rituals of the room begin and where they end; where the backstage and the front stage of the room meets. This mapping of the space shall bring about an overview of the body of news making, in order to consider it an embodiment of current values and culture of practice within journalism. Thus, I will highlight the advantages of studying the setting, space and place of journalism practice for journalism production studies.

    Authors: Kramer, Cæcilie Kildahl;

    De menneskeskabte klimaændringer skyldes udledning af drivhusgasser, især kuldioxid, metan, lattergas og CFC. Den samlede udledning af disse gasser er stigende og forventes frem til år 2100 at føre til en stigning den globale middeltemperatur på mellem 1,4 og 5,8 C. Variationsbredden er udtryk for variation i scenarierne for den fremtidige udledning af drivhusgasser og usikkerhed i klimamodellerne. Selv ved en stabilisering af atmosfærens indhold af drivhusgasserne på det nuværende niveau vil der ske en global temperaturstigning på yderligere1C. Beregninger med globale og regionale klimamodeller viser følgende tendenser for Danmark i år 2100 i forhold til 1990 for de mestanvendte udslipsscenarier. Den årlige middel-temperatur vil stige med 3-5 C. Nedbøren i vinterperioden vil stige med 20-40%, mens nedbøren i sommerperioden vil falde med 10-25%. Der vil endvidere være en tendens til flere episoder med kraftig nedbør, især i efteråret. Danmark har tiltrådt FN's klimakonvention og den tilhørende Kyoto-protokol, der forpligtigeren række industrilande til en 5% reduktion i udledningen af drivhusgasser. Danmark har forpligtiget sig til at reducere den samlede udledning af drivhusgasser med 21% i forhold til 1990-niveauet. Målsætningen skal være realiseret i 2008-2012. Uden yderligere tiltag forventes den samlede danske udledning af stige med13%. Selv med korrektion for el-import i basisåret og eleksport i forpligtigelsesperioden forventes reduktionen kun at blive på 9%.

    Authors: Kramer, Cæcilie Kildahl;

    Authors: Hassall Thomsen, Line Hassall;
