With full-waveform (FWF) lidar systems becoming increasingly available from different commercial manufacturers, the possibility for extracting physical parameters of the scanned surfaces in an area-wide sense, as addendum to their geometric representation, has risen as well. The mentioned FWF systems digitize the temporal profiles of the transmitted laser pulse and of its backscattered echoes, allowing for a reliable determination of the target distance to the instrument and of physical target quantities by means of radiometric calibration, one of such quantities being the diffuse Lambertian reflectance. The delineation of glaciers is a time-consuming task, commonly performed manually by experts and involving field trips as well as image interpretation of orthophotos, digital terrain models and shaded reliefs. In this study, the diffuse Lambertian reflectance was compared to the glacier outlines mapped by experts. We start the presentation with the workflow for analysis of FWF data, their direct georeferencing and the calculation of the diffuse Lambertian reflectance by radiometric calibration; this workflow is illustrated for a large FWF lidar campaign in the Ötztal Alps (Tyrol, Austria), operated with an Optech ALTM 3100 system. The geometric performance of the presented procedure was evaluated by means of a relative and an absolute accuracy assessment using strip differences and orthophotos, resp. The diffuse Lambertian reflectance was evaluated at two rock glaciers within the mentioned lidar campaign. This feature showed good performance for the delineation of the rock glacier boundaries, especially at their lower parts. The data sets contain the digital surface models (1m grid), the corresponding hillshades (1m resolution) and the model of the Lambertian surface reflectance (2m grid). The data stem from an airborne lidar campaign conducted in October 2010, operating in the near infrared (1064nm laser wavelength) using full-waveform digitization. All data sets are given as GeoTIFFs in UTM projection (Zone 32N), height reference is the WGS84 ellipsoid. The according geocode is included in the file headers (EPSG:32632). The diffuse reflectance was calibrated on behalf of in-situ reflectometer measurements in the same wavelength. We present a map of arable land (both utilized and abandoned) together with a validation data set for eight countries of the former Soviet Union (fSU), namely Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Republic of Moldova, Russian Federation and Ukraine. The map has a spatial resolution of 10 arc-seconds and represents the year 2010. The map is based on the integration of a number of existing maps and a training data set collected using visual interpretation of very high resolution (VHR) imagery. The map can be used for carbon modelling, assessment of land use, land use change and evaluation of agriculture potential. An additional validation data set was collected through visual interpretation of VHR imagery by trained experts, and can be used for validation of other maps from this region. The overall accuracies of the map by region and country, i.e. Caucasus, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Republic of Moldova, Russian Federation and Ukraine, are 90±2%, 84±2%, 92±1%, 78±3%, 95±1%, 83±2%, respectively. Permafrost thaw and ice wedge degradation lead to drastic landscape changes in the permafrost region. With this data set we investigated the cliff retreat of the Sobo-Sise Cliff (SSC), a high ice-bearing yedoma cliff in the Lena River Delta. The 1,660 m long cliff SSC extends from 72°32'34 N / 128°15'59 E to 72°32'06 N / 128°18'21 E and is located on the Sardakhskaya channel, which is one of the main Lena river branches in the Lena River Delta. Erosion rates for the SSC were determined based on satellite images from different sensors (Corona, Hexagon, Landsat, Planet cube-sat) for the period 1965-2018. Cliff front lines were manually digitized and erosion rates were calculated with the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) tool (Himmelstoos et al. 2018). The study Fuchs et al. (2020) (DOI:10.3389/feart.2020.00336) shows that the up to 27.7 m high SSC erodes in average 15.7 m yr-1 (2015-2018). During the entire observed time period from 1965-2018, the SSC retreated in average 484 m (ranging from 322 - 680 m). This dataset includes the mean annual erosion rates of the yedoma SSC for the time periods 1965-1975, 1975-2000, 2000-2005, 2005-2010, 2010-2015, and 2015-2018, as well as the absolute cliff retreat rates over the entire period 1965-2018, which are derived from remote sensing imagery analyzed with the DSAS tool (doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.918505). The Multi-GNSS observations from an onboard receiver were retrieved using kinematic Precise Point Positioning (PPP) method. The solution using only Global Positioning System (GPS) observations is the GPS-only solution; and the one using GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo observations together, is the GRE PPP solution. R is short for the Russian system GLONASS, and E is short for Europe system Galileo.The GNSS data was collected by a GNSS receiver on R/V Lance. It is used by the Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI) for regular monitoring and research related to ocean and sea ice properties in Fram Strait. During the Fram Strait 2016 cruise from day-of-year (DOY) 238 to DOY 257, a geodetic JAVAD TR_G3TH GNSS receiver was installed on the ship bow, which is about 6 m above the water surface. This receiver collected multi-GNSS data at a sampling of 1-Hz, including GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo. Temperature-dependent population growth of diamondback moth (DBM) Plutella xylostella (L.), a prolific insect pest of crucifer vegetables, was studied under six constant temperatures in the laboratory. The objective of the study was to predict the impacts of temperature changes on the population of DBM at high-resolution scales along altitudinal gradients and under climate change scenarios. Non-linear functions were fitted on the data for modeling the development, mortality, longevity and oviposition of the pest. The best-fitted functions for each life stage were compiled for estimating the life table parameters of the species by stochastic simulations. To quantify the impacts on the pest, three indices (establishment, generation and activity) were computed using the estimates of life table parameters and temperature data obtained at local scale (current scenario 2013) and downscaled climate change data (future scenario 2055) from the AFRICLIM database. To measure and represent the impacts of temperature change along the altitude on the pest; the indices were mapped along the altitudinal gradients of Kilimanjaro and Taita Hills, in Tanzania and Kenya, respectively. Potential impact of the changes between climate scenarios 2013 and 2055 was assessed. The data files included in this database were utilized for the above analysis to develop temperature dependent phenology of Plutella xylostella to assess current and future distribution along eastern African Afromontanes.
