description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Report 2017Publisher:Zenodo Authors: Karadjova, Olia;Karadjova, Olia;Ceratitis capitata (Diptera:Tephritidae) is native to Africa, but has spread to other parts of the world including southern Europe, Australia, Middle east and the New World tropics. The Mediterranean fruit fly is considered to be one of the worlds most destructive fruit pests because of its global distribution, wide host range and rapid dispersal. Of the main pathways of entry of C. capitata in Bulgaria, the pathway of infested fruits is considered as the most important and entry along this pathway is assessed as likely. Spread is expected to be by both natural means and by trade in fruit. C. capitata is a strong flyer and this would facilitate its transfer to suitable hosts. The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) provided data from monitoring surveys in 15 regions of the country for the period 2014 - 2016. Despite the low density of C. capitata adults captured in Bulgaria, the results from the surveys are similar to the data on the seasonal occurence of population fluctuations obtained in neighboring countries (Northern Greece, Montenegro, Croatia, Romania) and Spain. Three harvesting stages of mango fruit were harvested and 10 kg of mango fruit was stored in three storage conditions until the end of the storage period. Spoilage and weight loss of mango fruit were recorded from storage in three-day intervals. All samples were analyzed for Post-harvest quality of mango fruit before and after storage at Arba Minch University, Abaya Campus Chemistry laboratory, and sensory acceptability was evaluated by using untrained 45 panelists at the end of the storage period. Completely Randomized Design in factorial arrangement with three replications was used to evaluate the shelf life and postharvest quality of mango fruit. Weight loss, spoilage, firmness and total soluble solids of mango fruit were increased while vitamin C, moisture content and titratable acidity were decreased with increased storage time. The vitamin C content of mango fruit was highest at half ripe in a zero energy cool chamber and was lowest at full ripe harvested in a wooden box after the end of the storage period. The highest overall acceptability of mango fruit was observed at the half-ripe harvested stage in zero energy cool chambers while the lowest was observed at the mature green harvested stage mango fruit in a wooden box after the end of the storage period. Based on the current study, half ripen mango fruit in zero energy cool chamber storage recorded the least percent of weight loss, spoilage amount, maximum shelf life and quality, especially vitamin C content and higher overall acceptability. Further study will be needed on the microbial quality of mango fruit in different harvesting stages and storage conditions during storage periods. Int. J. Agril. Res. Innov. This initiative is a consequence of the absence of any information on any study being conducted in the past on the prevalence of dental diseases in the rural school going children of Thane district. Aims: The aims were to (1) assess the prevalence of gingivitis, fluorosis, caries and malocclusion in the school-going chil- dren of rural areas of district Thane, Maharashtra and (2) evaluate the pattern of above-mentioned diseases in different age groups and genders. Materials and Methods: A total of 638 school-going children comprising 282 boys and 356 girls were examined in the age groups of 4-7yrs, 8-12yrs and 13-16yrs. Results: The prevalence of gingivitis, fluorosis, caries and malocclusion was 86.7%, 2.2%, 79.6%, and 14.9% respectively. The difference between age groups for the prevalence of gingivitis was highly significant. A significant increase in the prevalence of malocclusion was observed with age. No significant difference was found among genders for the prevalence of malocclusion. The difference in fluorosis was insignificant between boys and girls. Conclusion: The data shows necessary dental health programs needs to be implemented to attain the required oral care among school children of rural areas of Thane district.

Land;We would like to comment on a recent study where the redox-modulatory anti-protozoal drug chloroquine has shown to trigger a crosstalk between the antioxidant and cell wall integrity systems in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This note discusses the redox-active potential of the natural compound 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzaldehyde (2H4M) which could also serve as a potent redox-cycler in fungal (yeast, molds) pathogens. Using S. cerevisiae as a molecular tool, we determined how 2H4M negatively affected both the antioxidant and cell wall integrity systems of fungi, thus indicating a similar crosstalk between the two systems under 2H4M-induced toxicity. The crosstalk functions as a fungal defense against redox-active drugs/compounds or environmental cues, and therefore, could be an effective target for antifungal treatment.

At the same time, the in-progress transition of operational agencies from salinity-independent radiative transfer modeling (RTM) to a salinity-dependent RTM exposes non-negligible sources of error and uncertainty in past operational passive microwave retrievals; consequently, the impact of improved modeling of SSS influences on ocean surface permittivity, as a principal component of ocean surface emissivity, is examined. Both reductions and continuing elements of uncertainty due to SSS are explored. Ocean surface emissivity's interwoven dependencies on salinity, temperature, and frequency are highly nonlinear; consequently, impacts due to salinity will depend on the instrument, application, and situation.

This work deals with the study of human postural responses to external perturbations, performed using a novel mechatronic electro-pneumatic system. The device, which must be handled by a clinical operator, has been designed, developed and tested on human subjects. An Hardware-in-the-Loop equipment is designed and developed reproducing the behavior of the operator, the automatic perturbator and the subject. An integrated multi-sensor approach that combines the benefits of the high spatial resolution of Landsat and the high temporal resolution of MODIS and geostationary satellites to provide daily field-scale ET estimates is evaluated over two different agricultural landscapes. The ET data fusion methodology described here can provide detailed information about daily and seasonal water use patterns. This information can be of utility for irrigation managers at the scale of individual fields as well as for regional monitoring of water use toward allocation and conservation efforts.

The Mediterranean fruit fly is considered to be one of the worlds most destructive fruit pests because of its global distribution, wide host range and rapid dispersal. Of the main pathways of entry of C. capitata in Bulgaria, the pathway of infested fruits is considered as the most important and entry along this pathway is assessed as likely. Spread is expected to be by both natural means and by trade in fruit. C. capitata is a strong flyer and this would facilitate its transfer to suitable hosts. The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) provided data from monitoring surveys in 15 regions of the country for the period 2014 - 2016. Despite the low density of C. capitata adults captured in Bulgaria, the results from the surveys are similar to the data on the seasonal occurence of population fluctuations obtained in neighboring countries (Northern Greece, Montenegro, Croatia, Romania) and Spain. Three harvesting stages of mango fruit were harvested and 10 kg of mango fruit was stored in three storage conditions until the end of the storage period. Spoilage and weight loss of mango fruit were recorded from storage in three-day intervals. All samples were analyzed for Post-harvest quality of mango fruit before and after storage at Arba Minch University, Abaya Campus Chemistry laboratory, and sensory acceptability was evaluated by using untrained 45 panelists at the end of the storage period. Completely Randomized Design in factorial arrangement with three replications was used to evaluate the shelf life and postharvest quality of mango fruit. Weight loss, spoilage, firmness and total soluble solids of mango fruit were increased while vitamin C, moisture content and titratable acidity were decreased with increased storage time. The vitamin C content of mango fruit was highest at half ripe in a zero energy cool chamber and was lowest at full ripe harvested in a wooden box after the end of the storage period. The highest overall acceptability of mango fruit was observed at the half-ripe harvested stage in zero energy cool chambers while the lowest was observed at the mature green harvested stage mango fruit in a wooden box after the end of the storage period. Based on the current study, half ripen mango fruit in zero energy cool chamber storage recorded the least percent of weight loss, spoilage amount, maximum shelf life and quality, especially vitamin C content and higher overall acceptability. Further study will be needed on the microbial quality of mango fruit in different harvesting stages and storage conditions during storage periods. Int. J. Agril. Res. Innov. This initiative is a consequence of the absence of any information on any study being conducted in the past on the prevalence of dental diseases in the rural school going children of Thane district. Aims: The aims were to (1) assess the prevalence of gingivitis, fluorosis, caries and malocclusion in the school-going chil- dren of rural areas of district Thane, Maharashtra and (2) evaluate the pattern of above-mentioned diseases in different age groups and genders. Materials and Methods: A total of 638 school-going children comprising 282 boys and 356 girls were examined in the age groups of 4-7yrs, 8-12yrs and 13-16yrs. Results: The prevalence of gingivitis, fluorosis, caries and malocclusion was 86.7%, 2.2%, 79.6%, and 14.9% respectively. The difference between age groups for the prevalence of gingivitis was highly significant. A significant increase in the prevalence of malocclusion was observed with age. No significant difference was found among genders for the prevalence of malocclusion. The difference in fluorosis was insignificant between boys and girls. Conclusion: The data shows necessary dental health programs needs to be implemented to attain the required oral care among school children of rural areas of Thane district.

Land;We would like to comment on a recent study where the redox-modulatory anti-protozoal drug chloroquine has shown to trigger a crosstalk between the antioxidant and cell wall integrity systems in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This note discusses the redox-active potential of the natural compound 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzaldehyde (2H4M) which could also serve as a potent redox-cycler in fungal (yeast, molds) pathogens. Using S. cerevisiae as a molecular tool, we determined how 2H4M negatively affected both the antioxidant and cell wall integrity systems of fungi, thus indicating a similar crosstalk between the two systems under 2H4M-induced toxicity. The crosstalk functions as a fungal defense against redox-active drugs/compounds or environmental cues, and therefore, could be an effective target for antifungal treatment.

At the same time, the in-progress transition of operational agencies from salinity-independent radiative transfer modeling (RTM) to a salinity-dependent RTM exposes non-negligible sources of error and uncertainty in past operational passive microwave retrievals; consequently, the impact of improved modeling of SSS influences on ocean surface permittivity, as a principal component of ocean surface emissivity, is examined. Both reductions and continuing elements of uncertainty due to SSS are explored. Ocean surface emissivity's interwoven dependencies on salinity, temperature, and frequency are highly nonlinear; consequently, impacts due to salinity will depend on the instrument, application, and situation.

This work deals with the study of human postural responses to external perturbations, performed using a novel mechatronic electro-pneumatic system. The device, which must be handled by a clinical operator, has been designed, developed and tested on human subjects. An integrated multi-sensor approach that combines the benefits of the high spatial resolution of Landsat and the high temporal resolution of MODIS and geostationary satellites to provide daily field-scale ET estimates is evaluated over two different agricultural landscapes. The ET data fusion methodology described here can provide detailed information about daily and seasonal water use patterns. This information can be of utility for irrigation managers at the scale of individual fields as well as for regional monitoring of water use toward allocation and conservation efforts.
