    Within the Subantarctic Mode Water (SAMW) density level, we study temporal changes in salinity, nutrients, oxygen and TTD (Transit Time Distribution) ages in the western (W) and eastern (E) subtropical gyre of the Indian Ocean (IO) from 1987 to 2002. Additionally, changes in Total Alkalinity (TA) and Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (DIC) are evaluated between 1995 and 2002. The mechanisms behind the detected changes are discussed along with the results from a hindcast model run (Community Climate System Model). The increasing salinity and decreasing oxygen trends from 1960 to 1987 reversed from 1987 to 2002 along the gyre. In the W-IO a decreasing trend in TTD ages points to a faster delivery of SAMW, thus less biogenic matter remineralization, explaining the oxygen increase and noisier nutrients decrease. In the E-IO SAMW, no change in TTD ages was detected, therefore the trends in oxygen and inorganic nutrients relate to changes in the Antarctic Surface Water transported into the E-IO SAMW formation area. In the W-IO between 1995 and 2002, the DIC increase is equal or even less than the anthropogenic input as the reduction in remineralization contributes to mask the increasing trend. In the E-IO between 1995 and 2002, DIC decreases slightly despite the increase in the anthropogenic input. Differences in the preformed E-IO SAMW conditions would explain this behavior. Trends in the W and E IO SAMW are decoupled and related to different forcing mechanisms in the two main sites of SAMW formation in the IO, at 40°S–70°E and 45°S–90°E, respectively. 3

    Land surface temperature (LST) is involved in many land surface processes such as evapotranspiration, net radiation, or air temperature modeling. In this paper we present an improved methodology to retrieve LST from Landsat 4 TM, Landsat 5 TM, and Landsat 7 ETM+ using four atmospheric databases covering different water vapor ranges (from 0 to 8 g cm−2) to build the LST retrieval models and using both water vapor and air temperature as input variables. We also compare this with LST retrievals using only water vapor or only air temperature, as well as with an existing LST retrieval algorithm. In order to validate the results, we have selected 77 Landsat images taken between 2002 and 2006 (Catalonia, northeast of the Iberian Peninsula) and two sources of water vapor (radiosounding data and remote sensing estimations) and air temperature (radiosounding data and air temperature modeling). The best results using radiosounding data are obtained when both air temperature and water vapor are present in the LST retrieval models with a mean RMSE of 0.9 K, followed by only water vapor models with a mean RMSE of 1.5 K and only air temperature models with a mean RMSE of 5.6 K. The results obtained using Terra Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Level 2 water vapor product and at‐satellite‐pass air temperature modeling as input data also show that this kind of input data offers best results, with a mean RMSE of 0.9 K, followed by water vapor models with a mean RMSE of 2.1 K and only air temperature models with a mean RMSE of 5.6 K. Similar errors when using radiosounding or modeled water vapor and air temperature as input data suggest the avoidance of radiosounding data to retrieve LST over extensive areas. Finally, when comparing the presented methodology with another methodology also using water vapor and air temperature as input data, the improvement is of more than 0.5 K.

    Authors: Juan C. Jiménez-Muñoz; José A. Sobrino;

    Many papers have developed algorithms to retrieve land surface temperature from at‐sensor and land surface emissivity data. These algorithms have been specified for different thermal sensors on board satellites, i.e., the algorithm used for one thermal sensor (or a combination of thermal sensors) cannot be used for other thermal sensor. The main goal of this paper is to propose a generalized single‐channel algorithm that only uses the total atmospheric water vapour content and the channel effective wavelength (assuming that emissivity is known), and can be applied to thermal sensors characterized with a FWHM (Full‐Width Half‐Maximum) of around 1 μm actually operative on board satellites. The main advantage of this algorithm compared with the other single‐channel methods is that in‐situ radiosoundings or effective mean atmospheric temperature values are not needed, whereas the main advantage of this algorithm compared with split‐window and dual‐angle methods is that it can be applied to different thermal sensors using the same equation and coefficients. The validation for different test sites shows root mean square deviations lower than 2 K for AVHRR channel 4 (λ ≈ 10.8 μm) and ATSR‐2 channel 2 (λ ≈ 11 μm), and lower than 1.5 K for Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) band 6 (λ ≈ 11.5 μm).

    We hypothesized that the optical plankton counter (OPC) senses particles in situ that are not collected by nets and analyzed in the laboratory. An OPC was deployed in situ between 1998 and 2004 in the mouth of a bongo net with 505‐μm‐mesh nets in the upper 210 m at stations in the California Current Region. Here we compare paired data sets from the OPC in situ and the OPC analysis in the laboratory of the simultaneously collected net samples for four seasons of 2 years. We restricted our analysis to particle sizes 1.26–6.35 mm equivalent spherical diameter (ESD), a size class shown from the lab OPC data to be retained efficiently by the net. On average, 4 (3) times more particles by number (volume) were sensed in situ by the OPC than sensed in net collections by the OPC in the lab. These values varied an order of magnitude among the eight cruises examined. Time of day, distance offshore, season, year, chlorophyll a concentration, and Brunt‐Väisälä frequency each explained significant variation in these differences. The excess of particles sensed in situ over that measured in the net samples was due primarily to smaller particles in the 1.26–6.35 mm ESD range. We infer that the particles measured by the OPC in situ but not in the lab were fragile and thus not collected by the net. We hypothesize that these fragile particles are primarily aggregates and abandoned houses of larvaceans.

    Images obtained by the Visible and Infrared Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS)-M channel instrument onboard Venus Express have been used to retrieve maps and apparent motions of the O2 (1Delta) infrared nightglow on Venus at 1.27 mum. The nightglow distribution is highly inhomogeneous with the regions of brightest emission generally located at low latitudes near the midnight meridian. Unexpectedly some orbits show also intense airglow activity over the south polar region. The spatially resolved airglow is spectacularly variable not only in its morphology and intensity but also in the apparent motions of the airglow small- and large-scale structures. Visual tracking of the bright features allowed to obtain mean zonal and meridional motions related to the subsolar to antisolar circulation. The zonal velocity is dominated by an intense prograde jet (contrary to the retrograde planetary rotation) from dawn to midnight extending up to 22 hours in local time with lower velocities and reversed sign from dusk. Typical zonal velocities range between +60 (prograde) to -50 (retrograde) m/s, whereas most meridional velocities range from -20 (poleward) to +100 m/s (equatorward) with an average meridional circulation of +20 m/s toward low latitudes. The brightest small-scale (~100 km) features appear correlated with locations of apparent convergence which may be a signature of compression and downwelling, whereas this is not evident for the large-scale structures suggesting slow subsidence over large areas mixed with horizontal motions. We argue that part of the tracked motions are representative of real motions at the mesosphere over an altitude range of 95-107 km. International audience

    This article analyzes the phase‐averaged hydrodynamics induced by regular wave groups and the related long waves under reflective conditions outside of the wave‐breaking zone. The solutions of the inviscid region and wave‐group bottom boundary layer (WGBL) are analytically investigated for a regular wave group at a constant depth, impinging obliquely on an alongshore uniform reflective wall. The problem is formulated and solved by using the classical multiple‐scale approach. Phase averaging is defined on the basis of the cascade of spatial and temporal scales of the problem leading to a weak unsteady (hydrodynamic) regime (WUR), a steady regime (SR), weak nonhomogeneous regime (WNHR), and homogeneous regime (HR) of instantaneous quantities. The analysis of the inviscid region hydrodynamics shows that depending on the time scale used for the averaging, modulation scales of O(100 m) and O(1 km) may appear in the time‐averaged pressure and the free stream velocity fields. These modulations are related to the nonlinear interference of the incoming and reflected wave‐group motions. Supermodulation scales of O(10 km) are also possible. Such scales result from the superposition of the bound long waves and the oscillatory free long wave mode released during the reflection of the wave train. The SR of the total pressure field and the WUR of the radiation stresses are also analyzed. The WGBL solution shows that multiple‐scale modulation of the inviscid region hydrodynamics can be fully transmitted to the Eulerian drift in the viscous region. We also found that under reflective conditions and nearly normal wave incidence, the WUR of the Eulerian drift may present standing modulated patterns with scales of O(100 m), O(1 km), and O(10 km). In the SR, there can be scales of O(100 m) and O(1 km). The mechanisms which determine the vertical structure and direction of the WUR and SR of the Eulerian drift beneath wave groups are also investigated as a function of the main parameters of the WGBL model. Physical implications of and qualifications to the theory presented on nearshore sediment transport are discussed.

    We describe and analyze a statistical filtering approach for Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) data that uses a parameterized model for the temporal evolution of the GRACE coefficients. After least squares adjustment, a statistical test is performed to assess the significance of the estimated parameters. If the test is passed, the parameters are used by the filter in the reconstruction of the field; otherwise, they are rejected. The test is performed, and the filter is formed, separately for annual components of the model and the trend. This new approach is distinct from Gaussian smoothing since it uses the data themselves to test for specific components of the time‐varying gravity field. The statistical filter appears inherently to remove most of the “stripes” present in the GRACE fields, although destriping the fields prior to filtering seems to help the trend recovery. We demonstrate that the statistical filter produces reasonable maps for the annual components and trend. We furthermore assess the statistical filter for the annual components using ground‐based GPS data in South America by assuming that the annual component of the gravity signal is associated only with groundwater storage. The undestriped, statistically filtered field has a χ2 value relative to the GPS data consistent with the best result from smoothing. In the space domain, the statistical filters are qualitatively similar to Gaussian smoothing. Unlike Gaussian smoothing, however, the statistical filter has significant sidelobes, including large negative sidelobes on the north‐south axis, potentially revealing information on the errors, and the correlations among the errors, for the GRACE coefficients.

    Two analyses have been performed of the use of the Weibull distribution to describe wind speed statistics. The first is a combination of theoretical considerations in a common domain of c and k parameters concerning some robust indicators of position, spread, skewness, and kurtosis. The second is a calculation of the Weibull parameters using three differing methods based on a 3‐a sodar database. The modified maximum‐likelihood method is direct, the method of weighted probability moments considers order statistics, and the method based on the minimum RMSE is iterative. As a result of the theoretical analyses, we propose some simple relationships involving Weibull parameters and the range of a fraction of central data, the variation coefficient, and the Yule‐Kendall index, which may be applied practically. The calculation of Weibull parameters has revealed the sharp contrast between day, where the fit was highly satisfactory, and night, mainly below 300 m. Moreover, a seasonal pattern was also observed. The comparison between the methods used also proved satisfactory, particularly during day, whereas a slight disagreement was observed during the night for the method based on the minimum RMSE. Finally, randomly generated samples were used to check the accuracy of the Weibull parameters in the domain analyzed, resulting in small residuals and standard deviations of the values calculated.

    This work deals with the applicability of a star photometer to retrieve precipitable water vapor (W) at nighttime by means of direct irradiance from stars using a 940 nm narrowband filter. Retrievals are assessed with simultaneous data from a Raman lidar system and linked with daytime values from a sun photometer using measurements taken from March to May 2007 at an urban site. Calibration of both the star and sun photometers was performed by the Modified Astronomical Langley Method. The retrieval of W from photometers is based on a look up table using a simplified expression for the water vapor transmittance and the relative optical water vapor air mass. This methodology presents a systematic uncertainty in W below 3% and 6% for sun and star photometry, respectively. Retrievals of W from star photometry were 9% above those obtained from the Raman lidar technique, but with a great agreement in the temporal evolution from both instruments. The link of daytime and nighttime values of W using sun and star photometers for a more extended database showed a smooth continuity between consecutive periods.

    This work examines the main sources of moisture over Central Brazil and La Plata Basin during the year through a new Lagrangian diagnosis method which identifies the humidity contributions to the moisture budget over a region. This methodology computes budgets of evaporation minus precipitation by calculating changes in the specific humidity along back‐trajectories for the previous 10 d. The origin of all air masses residing over each region was tracked during a period of 5 years (2000–2004). These regions were selected because they coincide with two centers of action of a known dipole precipitation variability mode observed in different temporal scales (from intra seasonal up to inter decadal timescales) and are related to the climatic variability of the South American Monsoon System. The results suggested the importance of the tropical south Atlantic as a moisture source for Central Brazil, and of recycling for La Plata basin. It seems that the Tropical South Atlantic plays an important role as a moisture source for Central Brazil and La Plata basin along the year, particularly during the austral summer. The north Atlantic is also an additional source for both regions during the austral summer.

    Authors: Juan C. Jiménez-Muñoz; José A. Sobrino;
