    ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the conversion of secondary native vegetation (NV) to conventional systems (agriculture and pasture) in soil organic carbon (SOC) and carbon of fractions particulate organic matter (POM) and mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) in the Brazilian semi-arid region. The study was carried out in the municipalities of Delmiro Gouveia, Inhapi and Pariconha, in Alagoas, Brazil. Soils were collected in the layers of 0-0.1, 0.1-0.2 and 0.2-0.3 m. The treatments analyzed were: agricultural crops with 4, 15 and 30 years and pasture with 10 years. As a reference, the secondary Caatinga was used. The results show that in soils with sandy texture (Neossolos Quartzarênico and Regolítico – Arenosols and Regosols, respectively), there were reductions in SOC levels and carbon in the compartment associated with minerals. The inverse can be observed in the clay-textured Argissolo (Acrisols), with 30 years of cultivation, in which there was an increase in SOC and C in the quantitative fractions of soil organic matter. In addition, despite the sandy texture of the Neossolo Regolítico, POM levels were increased in the pasture system in comparison to native vegetation, but it was not enough to recover the original SOC content of this system. RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito da conversão da vegetação nativa secundária (VN) em sistemas convencionais (agricultura e pastagem) no carbono orgânico total (COS) e carbono das frações da matéria orgânica particulada (MOP) e, matéria orgânica associada aos minerais (MOAM) no semiárido brasileiro. O estudo foi realizado nos municípios de Delmiro Gouveia, Inhapi e Pariconha, em Alagoas. Os solos foram coletados nas camadas de 0-0.1, 0.1-0.2 e 0.2-0.3 m. Os tratamentos analisados foram: cultivos agrícolas com 4, 15 e 30 anos e, pastagem com 10 anos. Como referência utilizou-se a Caatinga secundária. Os resultados mostram que em solos com textura mais arenosa (Neossolos Quartzarênico e Regolítico – Arenosols e Regosols, respectivamente) há reduções nos níveis de COS e carbono no compartimento associada aos minerais. O inverso pode ser observado no Argissolo (Acrisols), de textura argilosa com 30 anos de cultivo, o qual ocorreu um aumento no COS e C nas frações quantitativas da matéria orgânica do solo. Além disso, apesar da textura arenosa do Neossolo Regolítico, os níveis de MOP foram aumentados no sistema de pasto em relação à vegetação nativa, todavia não o suficiente para recuperar o conteúdo original de COS desse sistema.

    <p class="CORPOICA"><span lang="ES-CO">Se obtuvieron predicciones acerca de los efectos genéticos aditivos y no aditivos relativos al peso al destete en terneros pertenecientes a un rebaño multirracial Angus x Brahman, valiéndose de un procedimiento de evaluación animal multirracial; estos valores se compararon frente a predicciones de los efectos genéticos basadas en evaluaciones que contemplaban únicamente los efectos aditivos. Se encontraron cambios substanciales en las predicciones de los efectos genéticos cuando se incluyeron los efectos genéticos no aditivos en la evaluación. Éstos originaron diferencias en el ordenamiento de los toros para los efectos genéticos aditivos y totales. Por lo tanto, en la selección de toros destinados a programas de cruzamiento, se recomienda usar evaluaciones genéticas multirraciales que involucren los efectos genéticos no aditivos.</span></p><p class="CORPOICA"> </p><p class="CORPOICA"><strong>Prediction of Additive and Nonadditive Genetic Effects for Weight at Weaning Using a Multibreed Animal Evaluation Procedure</strong></p><p class="CORPOICA"><span lang="EN-US">Additive and nonadditive genetic effects were predicted for weaning weight in an Angus-Brahman multibreed herd by using a multibreed animal evaluation procedure and were compared to the predictions of genetic effects based only on additive genetic effects. Changes in the prediction of genetic effects were found when nonadditive genetic efects were included in the genetic evaluation procedure. </span><span lang="ES-CO">These changes caused differences in the ranking of sires for additive and total genetic effects. </span><span lang="EN-US">Therefore, when bulls used in crossbreeding programs are to be chosen, it should be valuable to use multibreed genetic evaluations that involve nonadditive genetic effects.</span></p>

    The present study had as objective evaluates the physiologic behavior of different genetic groups of sheep created in the semi-arid paraibano in the dry and rainy times. Forty sheep were used, eight of each genetic group, distributed entirely in a randomized design. There was shift effect, for all the environmental variables and studied physiologic parameters. There were significant interactions of the factors genotypes, time and hour for the parameters, rectal temperature and breathing frequency. With relationship to the Index of tolerance to the heat (ITC) significant effect of the studied factors was not verified. With these results it can be ended that the races Santa Inês, Cariri and the products, resultants of crossings of the animals ½Dorper and ½Damara with sheep without defined race (SRD) they resemble each other in the adaptation aspect to the conditions of the semi-arid.

    O trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o potencial de clones de Eucalyptus urophylla para produção de painéis aglomerados homogêneos de baixa densidade. Foram avaliados seis clones de Eucalyptus urophylla com 94 meses de idade, plantados no municipio de Paracatu-MG, sendo utilizada como parâmetro de comparação a madeira de Pinus oocarpa. Para cada clone de Eucalyptus urophylla e também para o Pinus oocarpa foram produzidos seis painéis com o adesivo uréia-formaldeido no teor de 6%, densidade nominal de 0,60 g/cm³, pressão especifica de 40kgf/cm², temperatura de 160ºC e tempo de 8 minutos. Os clones de Eucalyptus urophylla apresentaram potencial para produção de painéis aglomerados convencionais de baixa densidade. Os clones 62 e 28 obtiveram os melhores resultados em todas as propriedades fisico-mecânicas avaliadas, apresentando propriedades iguais ou superiores as obtidas para os painéis produzidos com a madeira de Pinus oocarpa. Com relação à norma de comercialização CS 236/1966 apenas o clone 28 atendeu a todos os requisitos. Nenhum dos clones avaliados atendeu a norma EN 312/2003.

    This study aimed at evaluating the effect of genotypes of Eucalyptus dunnii on in vitro establishment and also the influence of genotypes grown in different concentrations of 6-Benzylaminopurine (BAP) on in vitro multiplication. Explants were obtained from 10 parent plants selected in the field as a function of their superior phenotype characteristics. For in vitro establishment, 10 genotypes were evaluated, while in vitro multiplication consisted of 30 treatments which corresponded to combinations of six genotypes found to succeed in the in vitro establishment and five BAP concentrations (0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.0 mg L-1). Different behaviors were observed regarding the genotypes as to in vitro establishment rates, in which genotypes 3, 6 and 7 had establishment rates of over 70%, against 40% to 6.6% for the other genotypes. Genotypes 1, 5, 8 and 9 were later discarded due to the reduced number of explants successfully established. Factors such as microbial contamination and phenol oxidation posed a threat to in vitro establishment. The genotypes of Eucalyptus dunnii interacted differently with BAP in in vitro multiplication, noting that the concentration 0.50 mg L-1 positively influenced bud formation on the explants in most genotypes. Hyperhydricity was relatively low when 0.50 mg L-1 BAP was used and thus does not pose a threat to in vitro multiplication of nodal segments of Eucalyptus dunnii. Conduziu-se este trabalho, com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito de genótipos de Eucalyptus dunnii no estabelecimento in vitro e a influência de genótipos cultivados em diferentes concentrações de 6-Benzilaminopurina (BAP) na multiplicação in vitro. Os explantes foram oriundos de 10 matrizes, selecionadas a campo em função de características fenotípicas superiores. Para o estabelecimento in vitro foram avaliados 10 genótipos, e, para a multiplicação in vitro, 30 tratamentos, que corresponderam às combinações de seis genótipos que obtiveram sucesso no estabelecimento in vitro com cinco concentrações de BAP (0; 0,25; 0,50; 0,75; e 1,0 mg L-1). Constatou-se comportamento diferenciado dos genótipos em relação ao estabelecimento in vitro, sendo que os genótipos 3, 6 e 7 apresentaram estabelecimento superior a 70%, enquanto para os demais as médias variaram entre 40 e 6,6%. Os genótipos 1, 5, 8 e 9 foram, posteriormente, descartados em virtude do número reduzido de explantes estabelecidos. A contaminação microbiana e a oxidação fenólica constituíram fatores que comprometem o estabelecimento in vitro. Os genótipos de Eucalyptus dunnii interagem de maneira diferenciada com BAP na multiplicação in vitro, porém a concentração 0,50 mg L-1 influencia positivamente a formação de gemas por explante na maior parte dos genótipos estudados. A hiperhidricidade é relativamente baixa na presença de 0,50 mg L-1 de BAP, não comprometendo a multiplicação in vitro de segmentos nodais de Eucalyptus dunnii.

    Life-sciences are pointing towards an alarming worldwide pollinator decline. This decline proceeds along with overall biodiversity losses, even in the context of urban landscapes and human welfare. At the same time, social-sciences are arguing an increased distance from nature, experienced by citizens. The strong connection between the public good and pollinator sustainability, even in urban areas, is well-documented. However, usually basic and applied life-sciences tend to underestimate public perception of nature, which is better tackled by the fields of social-sciences. Therefore, more efforts are needed to link scientific questions and public 'perception' of nature. We designed a transversal project where research questions directly confront public concerns: i.e., even while addressing scientific knowledge gaps, our questions directly arise from public concerns. Social studies highlighted that appreciation of (exotic) plants is related to the impact they may have on the surrounding natural environment: therefore, we investigated links of native and exotic flowers to local pollinators. Other studies highlighted that scientific results need to link to everyday individual experience: therefore, we investigated pollination modes of the renown Salvia, native and exotic, largely used in cuisine and gardening. The botanic garden was the promoter of scientific questions addressed by the public, and also collated the results in a travelling exhibition. The exhibition, together with a dedicated catalogue, were especially designed to enlighten the wide public on the relationships that plants, native and exotic alike, establish with the surrounding world.

    The occurrence of seasonal droughts is one of the main factors that limit the sugarcane ratoon cycles, compromising sugarcane field longevity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the biochemical responses of sugarcane cultivars to drought stress in ratoon crop. Six cultivars were used: RB72910, RB99382, RB72454, RB92579, RB855536 and RB931011, and three water regimes based on soil available water content (SAWC) and defined as: control, 80 to 100% (SAWC); moderate water stress, 40 to 60% (SAWC), and severe water stress, 0 to 20% (SAWC). Cultivar RB72454 was most sensitive to water deficit. When under stress, this cultivar showed an increased production of hydrogen peroxide, but without concomitant increase in the activity of the antioxidant enzymes ascorbate peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase. Oxidative stress led to lipid peroxidation and chlorophyll degradation, resulting in higher photochemical photoinhibition. On the other hand, cultivar RB92579 was the most tolerant to drought, with increased activity of antioxidant enzymes, which led to low lipid peroxidation, maintenance of photosynthetic pigments and photochemical activity. The antioxidant defense system triggered by ascorbate peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase enzymes appears to be a key protection factor to photochemical complexes of chloroplast of sugarcane plants under water stress. The increase in the antioxidant system as well as the maintenance of photosynthetic pigments and cell membranes served as important criteria to indicate cultivars more tolerant to drought stress. A ocorrência de secas sazonais é um dos principais fatores que limitam a longevidade do canavial. Esse trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar as respostas bioquímicas de cultivares de cana-de-açúcar em seu segundo ciclo de cultivo a condições de estresse hídrico. Para tanto, foram utilizadas seis cultivares: RB72910, RB99382, RB72454, RB92579, RB855536 e RB931011, e três regimes hídricos, baseado na capacidade de água disponível (CAD) e definidos como: controle, 80 a 100% (CAD); estresse hídrico moderado, 40 a 60% (CAD), e estresse hídrico severo, 0 a 20% (CAD). A cultivar RB72454 se mostrou a mais sensível ao déficit hídrico. Essa cultivar mostrou aumento na produção de peróxido de hidrogênio, mas sem aumento concomitante das enzimas antioxidantes ascorbato peroxidase, catalase e superóxido dismutase. Esse estresse oxidativo levou a peroxidação de lipídeos das membranas e degradação das clorofilas, resultando na diminuição da eficiência fotoquímica do PSII. Por outro lado, a cultivar RB92579 foi a mais tolerante à seca, com aumento de atividade das enzimas antioxidantes, que levou a baixa peroxidação de lipídeos, manutenção dos pigmentos fotossintéticos e da eficiência fotoquímica do PSII. O sistema de defesa antioxidante desencadeado pelas enzimas ascorbato peroxidase, catalase e superóxido dismutase parece ser o fator chave de proteção à fotoinibição de plantas de cana-de-açúcar sob estresse hídrico. O aumento do sistema antioxidante, bem como a manutenção dos pigmentos fotossintéticos e das membranas celulares serviram como critérios importantes para indicar cultivares mais tolerantes ao estresse hídrico.

    Este artigo tem como objetivo mensurar o impacto do aumento da demanda final da indústria de base florestal. Como instrumento de análise utiliza-se a matriz de contabilidade social do Estado do Paraná de 1998. Foi necessário calcular o multiplicares da matriz. Os efeitos de uma injeção nas variáveis exógenas sobre os segmentos de Madeira e Mobiliário e de Papel e Papelão resultaram em choques de demanda mais intensos dentro do próprio setor. Observa-se que o ramo de Madeira e Mobiliário tem maiores ligações com as atividades relativas ao setor terciário; já o segmento de Papel e Papelão, com atividades que necessitam embalagem. Conclui-se que, apesar da agregação das atividades econômicas da matriz de contabilidade social paranaense, foi possível identificar os principais impactos decorrentes do aumento da demanda final.The present article aims at measuring the final demand impact on the forest-based industry by using the 1998 State of Paraná social accounting matrix as the analysis tool. We also had to calculate the matrix multipliers. The increased effects of exogenous activity on the Wood/Furniture and Paper/Pulp activities brought a more intense demand shock to that sector. We noticed that the Wood and Furniture activity is mostly connected with the tertiary sector activities, while the Paper and Pulp activity is mostly connected with activities that need packing. Finally, we could identify the main impacts originated by an increased final demand in spite of the reduction in the number of Paraná Social Accounting Matrix economic activities.

    Climate projections for the Mediterranean area estimate a decline in total precipitation, warmer temperatures, and a higher frequency of extreme drought events. It is important to understand how trees respond to these climatic changes and which wood anatomical structures best document the trees’ response to those changes. The present work investigates the climatic signal of tree-ring width, latewood width, and the frequency of intra-annual density fluctuations (IADFs) during the last 100 years for Pinus pinaster Aiton growing in the western Mediterranean region. Based on meteorological data, it was observed that since the 1950s, average annual temperature and autumn and winter precipitation increased. Tree-ring width and latewood width of P. pinaster were positively correlated with winter and summer precipitation and negatively correlated with spring and summer temperatures. The frequency of latewood IADFs showed a positive and time-stable correlation with September and October precipitation. However, after the 1970s, the frequency of IADFs also became correlated with climatic conditions later in the year, specifically with the temperatures of November and December, probably because of the recent climate changes. IADFs chronologies, besides being very useful to reconstruct autumn precipitation, can add new climatic information to ring-width chronologies.

    ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the conversion of secondary native vegetation (NV) to conventional systems (agriculture and pasture) in soil organic carbon (SOC) and carbon of fractions particulate organic matter (POM) and mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) in the Brazilian semi-arid region. The study was carried out in the municipalities of Delmiro Gouveia, Inhapi and Pariconha, in Alagoas, Brazil. Soils were collected in the layers of 0-0.1, 0.1-0.2 and 0.2-0.3 m. The treatments analyzed were: agricultural crops with 4, 15 and 30 years and pasture with 10 years. As a reference, the secondary Caatinga was used. The results show that in soils with sandy texture (Neossolos Quartzarênico and Regolítico – Arenosols and Regosols, respectively), there were reductions in SOC levels and carbon in the compartment associated with minerals. The inverse can be observed in the clay-textured Argissolo (Acrisols), with 30 years of cultivation, in which there was an increase in SOC and C in the quantitative fractions of soil organic matter. In addition, despite the sandy texture of the Neossolo Regolítico, POM levels were increased in the pasture system in comparison to native vegetation, but it was not enough to recover the original SOC content of this system. RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito da conversão da vegetação nativa secundária (VN) em sistemas convencionais (agricultura e pastagem) no carbono orgânico total (COS) e carbono das frações da matéria orgânica particulada (MOP) e, matéria orgânica associada aos minerais (MOAM) no semiárido brasileiro. O estudo foi realizado nos municípios de Delmiro Gouveia, Inhapi e Pariconha, em Alagoas. Os solos foram coletados nas camadas de 0-0.1, 0.1-0.2 e 0.2-0.3 m. Os tratamentos analisados foram: cultivos agrícolas com 4, 15 e 30 anos e, pastagem com 10 anos. Como referência utilizou-se a Caatinga secundária. Os resultados mostram que em solos com textura mais arenosa (Neossolos Quartzarênico e Regolítico – Arenosols e Regosols, respectivamente) há reduções nos níveis de COS e carbono no compartimento associada aos minerais. O inverso pode ser observado no Argissolo (Acrisols), de textura argilosa com 30 anos de cultivo, o qual ocorreu um aumento no COS e C nas frações quantitativas da matéria orgânica do solo. Além disso, apesar da textura arenosa do Neossolo Regolítico, os níveis de MOP foram aumentados no sistema de pasto em relação à vegetação nativa, todavia não o suficiente para recuperar o conteúdo original de COS desse sistema.

Changes in the prediction of genetic effects were found when nonadditive genetic efects were included in the genetic evaluation procedure. </span><span lang="ES-CO">These changes caused differences in the ranking of sires for additive and total genetic effects. </span><span lang="EN-US">Therefore, when bulls used in crossbreeding programs are to be chosen, it should be valuable to use multibreed genetic evaluations that involve nonadditive genetic effects.</span></p>

    The present study had as objective evaluates the physiologic behavior of different genetic groups of sheep created in the semi-arid paraibano in the dry and rainy times. Forty sheep were used, eight of each genetic group, distributed entirely in a randomized design. There was shift effect, for all the environmental variables and studied physiologic parameters. There were significant interactions of the factors genotypes, time and hour for the parameters, rectal temperature and breathing frequency. With relationship to the Index of tolerance to the heat (ITC) significant effect of the studied factors was not verified. With these results it can be ended that the races Santa Inês, Cariri and the products, resultants of crossings of the animals ½Dorper and ½Damara with sheep without defined race (SRD) they resemble each other in the adaptation aspect to the conditions of the semi-arid.

    O trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o potencial de clones de Eucalyptus urophylla para produção de painéis aglomerados homogêneos de baixa densidade. Foram avaliados seis clones de Eucalyptus urophylla com 94 meses de idade, plantados no municipio de Paracatu-MG, sendo utilizada como parâmetro de comparação a madeira de Pinus oocarpa. Para cada clone de Eucalyptus urophylla e também para o Pinus oocarpa foram produzidos seis painéis com o adesivo uréia-formaldeido no teor de 6%, densidade nominal de 0,60 g/cm³, pressão especifica de 40kgf/cm², temperatura de 160ºC e tempo de 8 minutos. Os clones de Eucalyptus urophylla apresentaram potencial para produção de painéis aglomerados convencionais de baixa densidade. Os clones 62 e 28 obtiveram os melhores resultados em todas as propriedades fisico-mecânicas avaliadas, apresentando propriedades iguais ou superiores as obtidas para os painéis produzidos com a madeira de Pinus oocarpa. Com relação à norma de comercialização CS 236/1966 apenas o clone 28 atendeu a todos os requisitos. Nenhum dos clones avaliados atendeu a norma EN 312/2003.

    This study aimed at evaluating the effect of genotypes of Eucalyptus dunnii on in vitro establishment and also the influence of genotypes grown in different concentrations of 6-Benzylaminopurine (BAP) on in vitro multiplication. Explants were obtained from 10 parent plants selected in the field as a function of their superior phenotype characteristics. For in vitro establishment, 10 genotypes were evaluated, while in vitro multiplication consisted of 30 treatments which corresponded to combinations of six genotypes found to succeed in the in vitro establishment and five BAP concentrations (0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.0 mg L-1). Different behaviors were observed regarding the genotypes as to in vitro establishment rates, in which genotypes 3, 6 and 7 had establishment rates of over 70%, against 40% to 6.6% for the other genotypes. Genotypes 1, 5, 8 and 9 were later discarded due to the reduced number of explants successfully established. Factors such as microbial contamination and phenol oxidation posed a threat to in vitro establishment. The genotypes of Eucalyptus dunnii interacted differently with BAP in in vitro multiplication, noting that the concentration 0.50 mg L-1 positively influenced bud formation on the explants in most genotypes. Hyperhydricity was relatively low when 0.50 mg L-1 BAP was used and thus does not pose a threat to in vitro multiplication of nodal segments of Eucalyptus dunnii. Conduziu-se este trabalho, com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito de genótipos de Eucalyptus dunnii no estabelecimento in vitro e a influência de genótipos cultivados em diferentes concentrações de 6-Benzilaminopurina (BAP) na multiplicação in vitro. Os explantes foram oriundos de 10 matrizes, selecionadas a campo em função de características fenotípicas superiores. Para o estabelecimento in vitro foram avaliados 10 genótipos, e, para a multiplicação in vitro, 30 tratamentos, que corresponderam às combinações de seis genótipos que obtiveram sucesso no estabelecimento in vitro com cinco concentrações de BAP (0; 0,25; 0,50; 0,75; e 1,0 mg L-1). Constatou-se comportamento diferenciado dos genótipos em relação ao estabelecimento in vitro, sendo que os genótipos 3, 6 e 7 apresentaram estabelecimento superior a 70%, enquanto para os demais as médias variaram entre 40 e 6,6%. Os genótipos 1, 5, 8 e 9 foram, posteriormente, descartados em virtude do número reduzido de explantes estabelecidos. A contaminação microbiana e a oxidação fenólica constituíram fatores que comprometem o estabelecimento in vitro. Os genótipos de Eucalyptus dunnii interagem de maneira diferenciada com BAP na multiplicação in vitro, porém a concentração 0,50 mg L-1 influencia positivamente a formação de gemas por explante na maior parte dos genótipos estudados. A hiperhidricidade é relativamente baixa na presença de 0,50 mg L-1 de BAP, não comprometendo a multiplicação in vitro de segmentos nodais de Eucalyptus dunnii.

    Life-sciences are pointing towards an alarming worldwide pollinator decline. This decline proceeds along with overall biodiversity losses, even in the context of urban landscapes and human welfare. At the same time, social-sciences are arguing an increased distance from nature, experienced by citizens. The strong connection between the public good and pollinator sustainability, even in urban areas, is well-documented. However, usually basic and applied life-sciences tend to underestimate public perception of nature, which is better tackled by the fields of social-sciences. Therefore, more efforts are needed to link scientific questions and public 'perception' of nature. We designed a transversal project where research questions directly confront public concerns: i.e., even while addressing scientific knowledge gaps, our questions directly arise from public concerns. Social studies highlighted that appreciation of (exotic) plants is related to the impact they may have on the surrounding natural environment: therefore, we investigated links of native and exotic flowers to local pollinators. Other studies highlighted that scientific results need to link to everyday individual experience: therefore, we investigated pollination modes of the renown Salvia, native and exotic, largely used in cuisine and gardening. The botanic garden was the promoter of scientific questions addressed by the public, and also collated the results in a travelling exhibition. The exhibition, together with a dedicated catalogue, were especially designed to enlighten the wide public on the relationships that plants, native and exotic alike, establish with the surrounding world.

    The occurrence of seasonal droughts is one of the main factors that limit the sugarcane ratoon cycles, compromising sugarcane field longevity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the biochemical responses of sugarcane cultivars to drought stress in ratoon crop. Six cultivars were used: RB72910, RB99382, RB72454, RB92579, RB855536 and RB931011, and three water regimes based on soil available water content (SAWC) and defined as: control, 80 to 100% (SAWC); moderate water stress, 40 to 60% (SAWC), and severe water stress, 0 to 20% (SAWC). Cultivar RB72454 was most sensitive to water deficit. When under stress, this cultivar showed an increased production of hydrogen peroxide, but without concomitant increase in the activity of the antioxidant enzymes ascorbate peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase. Oxidative stress led to lipid peroxidation and chlorophyll degradation, resulting in higher photochemical photoinhibition. On the other hand, cultivar RB92579 was the most tolerant to drought, with increased activity of antioxidant enzymes, which led to low lipid peroxidation, maintenance of photosynthetic pigments and photochemical activity. The antioxidant defense system triggered by ascorbate peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase enzymes appears to be a key protection factor to photochemical complexes of chloroplast of sugarcane plants under water stress. The increase in the antioxidant system as well as the maintenance of photosynthetic pigments and cell membranes served as important criteria to indicate cultivars more tolerant to drought stress. A ocorrência de secas sazonais é um dos principais fatores que limitam a longevidade do canavial. Esse trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar as respostas bioquímicas de cultivares de cana-de-açúcar em seu segundo ciclo de cultivo a condições de estresse hídrico. Para tanto, foram utilizadas seis cultivares: RB72910, RB99382, RB72454, RB92579, RB855536 e RB931011, e três regimes hídricos, baseado na capacidade de água disponível (CAD) e definidos como: controle, 80 a 100% (CAD); estresse hídrico moderado, 40 a 60% (CAD), e estresse hídrico severo, 0 a 20% (CAD). A cultivar RB72454 se mostrou a mais sensível ao déficit hídrico. Essa cultivar mostrou aumento na produção de peróxido de hidrogênio, mas sem aumento concomitante das enzimas antioxidantes ascorbato peroxidase, catalase e superóxido dismutase. Esse estresse oxidativo levou a peroxidação de lipídeos das membranas e degradação das clorofilas, resultando na diminuição da eficiência fotoquímica do PSII. Por outro lado, a cultivar RB92579 foi a mais tolerante à seca, com aumento de atividade das enzimas antioxidantes, que levou a baixa peroxidação de lipídeos, manutenção dos pigmentos fotossintéticos e da eficiência fotoquímica do PSII. O sistema de defesa antioxidante desencadeado pelas enzimas ascorbato peroxidase, catalase e superóxido dismutase parece ser o fator chave de proteção à fotoinibição de plantas de cana-de-açúcar sob estresse hídrico. O aumento do sistema antioxidante, bem como a manutenção dos pigmentos fotossintéticos e das membranas celulares serviram como critérios importantes para indicar cultivares mais tolerantes ao estresse hídrico.

    Este artigo tem como objetivo mensurar o impacto do aumento da demanda final da indústria de base florestal. Como instrumento de análise utiliza-se a matriz de contabilidade social do Estado do Paraná de 1998. Foi necessário calcular o multiplicares da matriz. Os efeitos de uma injeção nas variáveis exógenas sobre os segmentos de Madeira e Mobiliário e de Papel e Papelão resultaram em choques de demanda mais intensos dentro do próprio setor. Observa-se que o ramo de Madeira e Mobiliário tem maiores ligações com as atividades relativas ao setor terciário; já o segmento de Papel e Papelão, com atividades que necessitam embalagem. Conclui-se que, apesar da agregação das atividades econômicas da matriz de contabilidade social paranaense, foi possível identificar os principais impactos decorrentes do aumento da demanda final.The present article aims at measuring the final demand impact on the forest-based industry by using the 1998 State of Paraná social accounting matrix as the analysis tool. We also had to calculate the matrix multipliers. The increased effects of exogenous activity on the Wood/Furniture and Paper/Pulp activities brought a more intense demand shock to that sector. We noticed that the Wood and Furniture activity is mostly connected with the tertiary sector activities, while the Paper and Pulp activity is mostly connected with activities that need packing. Finally, we could identify the main impacts originated by an increased final demand in spite of the reduction in the number of Paraná Social Accounting Matrix economic activities.

    Climate projections for the Mediterranean area estimate a decline in total precipitation, warmer temperatures, and a higher frequency of extreme drought events. It is important to understand how trees respond to these climatic changes and which wood anatomical structures best document the trees’ response to those changes. The present work investigates the climatic signal of tree-ring width, latewood width, and the frequency of intra-annual density fluctuations (IADFs) during the last 100 years for Pinus pinaster Aiton growing in the western Mediterranean region. Based on meteorological data, it was observed that since the 1950s, average annual temperature and autumn and winter precipitation increased. Tree-ring width and latewood width of P. pinaster were positively correlated with winter and summer precipitation and negatively correlated with spring and summer temperatures. The frequency of latewood IADFs showed a positive and time-stable correlation with September and October precipitation. However, after the 1970s, the frequency of IADFs also became correlated with climatic conditions later in the year, specifically with the temperatures of November and December, probably because of the recent climate changes. IADFs chronologies, besides being very useful to reconstruct autumn precipitation, can add new climatic information to ring-width chronologies.
