    Abstract. Alpine glaciers play a key role in our society through the production of freshwater for domestic, industrial and agricultural use. As they are severely affected by climate change, it is of crucial importance to understand their behaviour and monitor their morphological evolution, with the primary aims to estimate ice volume and mass changes. However, the accurate retrieval of glacier morphology changes over time is not an easy task. In this context, the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) is of interest to the glaciological community because of their flexibility, fine spatial detail and ease of processing with state-of-the-art software packages, which makes them an ideal candidate to investigate glacier changes. The goal of this work is to assess the accuracy that can be obtained with UAVs observations when comparing volume changes computed from multi-temporal acquisitions on an Alpine glacier, on the basis of a photogrammetric pipeline implemented in Leica Infinity software. The study area is Forni Glacier in Raethian Alps, Italy. Two photogrammetric blocks were acquired in 2014 and 2016 using different UAVs: a fixed-wing drone in 2014 and an in-house multicopter in 2016. Ground Control Points (GCPs) were established only during the 2016 survey which was used to establish the reference datum. Different techniques to co-register the 2014 dataset to the 2016 dataset were applied and compared: 1) using points extracted from the 2016 Dense Point Cloud (DPC) as GCPs for the 2014 DPC generation; 2) shifting and rotating the raw 2014 DPC, using manually digitised common points from the 2014 and 2016 DPCs in Leica Infinity; 3) first manually shifting, then automatically roto-translating with the Iterative Closest Point (ICP) algorithm the raw 2014 DPC in CloudCompare. The investigation shows a good agreement of the three co-registration methods in terms of height and ice volume changes and the potential of UAV data processing with Leica Infinity for glacier monitoring even when the acquisition conditions are problematic (lack of ground control points, sub-optimal image quality).

    Abstract. This paper describes the use of terrestrial laser scanning for the full three-dimensional (3D) recording of historical monument, known as the Bastion Middleburg. The monument is located in Melaka, Malaysia, and was built by the Dutch in 1660. This monument serves as a major hub for the community when conducting commercial activities in estuaries Malacca and the Dutch build this monument as a control tower or fortress. The monument is located on the banks of the Malacca River was built between Stadhuys or better known as the Red House and Mill Quayside. The breakthrough fort on 25 November 2006 was a result of the National Heritage Department through in-depth research on the old map. The recording process begins with the placement of measuring targets at strategic locations around the monument. Spherical target was used in the point cloud data registration. The scanning process is carried out using a laser scanning system known as a terrestrial scanner Leica C10. This monument was scanned at seven scanning stations located surrounding the monument with medium scanning resolution mode. Images of the monument have also been captured using a digital camera that is setup in the scanner. For the purposes of proper registration process, the entire spherical target was scanned separately using a high scanning resolution mode. The point cloud data was pre-processed using Leica Cyclone software. The pre-processing process starting with the registration of seven scan data set through overlapping spherical targets. The post-process involved in the generation of coloured point cloud model of the monument using third-party software. The orthophoto of the monument was also produced. This research shows that the method of laser scanning provides an excellent solution for recording historical monuments with true scale of and texture.

    Abstract. Timely and accurate acquisition of information on the condition and structural changes of urban trees serves as a tool for decision makers to better appreciate urban ecosystems and their numerous values which are critical to building up strategies for sustainable development. The conventional techniques used for extracting tree features include; ground surveying and interpretation of the aerial photography. However, these techniques are associated with some constraint, such as labour intensive field work, a lot of financial requirement, influences by weather condition and topographical covers which can be overcome by means of integrated airborne based LiDAR and very high resolution digital image datasets. This study presented a semi-automated approach for extracting urban trees from integrated airborne based LIDAR and multispectral digital image datasets over Istanbul city of Turkey. The above scheme includes detection and extraction of shadow free vegetation features based on spectral properties of digital images using shadow index and NDVI techniques and automated extraction of 3D information about vegetation features from the integrated processing of shadow free vegetation image and LiDAR point cloud datasets. The ability of the developed algorithms shows a promising result as an automated and cost effective approach to estimating and delineated 3D information of urban trees. The research also proved that integrated datasets is a suitable technology and a viable source of information for city managers to be used in urban trees management.

    Abstract. In Taiwan, the average annual rainfall is about 2,500 mm, about three times the world average. Hill slopes where are mostly under meta-stable conditions due to fragmented surface materials can easily be disturbed by heavy typhoon rainfall and/or earthquakes, resulting in landslides and debris flows. Thus, an efficient data acquisition and disaster surveying method is critical for decision making. Comparing with satellite and airplane, the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is a portable and dynamic platform for data acquisition. In particularly when a small target area is required. In this study, a fixed-wing UAV that equipped with a consumer grade digital camera, i.e. Canon EOS 450D, a flight control computer, a Garmin GPS receiver and an attitude heading reference system (AHRS) are proposed. The adopted UAV has about two hours flight duration time with a flight control range of 20 km and has a payload of 3 kg, which is suitable for a medium scale mapping and surveying mission. In the paper, a test area with 21.3 km2 in size containing hundreds of landslides induced by Typhoon Morakot is used for landslides mapping. The flight height is around 1,400 meters and the ground sampling distance of the acquired imagery is about 17 cm. The aerial triangulation, ortho-image generation and mosaicking are applied to the acquired images in advance. An automatic landslides detection algorithm is proposed based on the object-based image analysis (OBIA) technique. The color ortho-image and a digital elevation model (DEM) are used. The ortho-images before and after typhoon are utilized to estimate new landslide regions. Experimental results show that the developed algorithm can achieve a producer's accuracy up to 91%, user's accuracy 84%, and a Kappa index of 0.87. It demonstrates the feasibility of the landslide detection algorithm and the applicability of a fixed-wing UAV for landslide mapping.

    Pleiades 1A and 1B are twin optical satellites of Optical and Radar Federated Earth Observation (ORFEO) program jointly miming by France and Italy. They are the first satellites of Europe with sub-meter resolution. Airbus DS (formerly Astrium Geo) runs a MyGIC (formerly Pleiades Users Group) program to validate Pleiades images worldwide for various application purposes. The authors conduct three projects, one is within this program, the second is supported by BEU Scientific Research Project Program, and the third is supported by TUBITAK. Assessment of georeferencing accuracy, image quality, pansharpening performance and Digital Surface Model/Digital Terrain Model (DSM/DTM) quality subjects are investigated in these projects. For these purposes, triplet panchromatic (50 cm Ground Sampling Distance (GSD)) and VNIR (2 m GSD) Pleiades 1A images were investigated over Zonguldak test site (Turkey) which is urbanised, mountainous and covered by dense forest. The georeferencing accuracy was estimated with a standard deviation in X and Y (SX, SY) in the range of 0.45m by bias corrected Rational Polynomial Coefficient (RPC) orientation, using 170 Ground Control Points (GCPs). 3D standard deviation of +/- 0.44m in X, +/- 0.51m in Y, and +/- 1.82m in Z directions have been reached in spite of the very narrow angle of convergence by bias corrected RPC orientation. The image quality was also investigated with respect to effective resolution, Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) and blur coefficient. The effective resolution was estimated with factor slightly below 1.0, meaning that the image quality corresponds to the nominal resolution of 50cm. The blur coefficients were achieved between 0.39-0.46 for triplet panchromatic images, indicating a satisfying image quality. SNR is in the range of other comparable space borne images which may be caused by de-noising of Pleiades images. The pansharpened images were generated by various methods, and are validated by most common statistical metrics and also visual interpretation. The generated DSM and DTM were achieved with +/- 1.6m standard deviation in Z (SZ) in relation to a reference DTM. Authors would like to thank to Airbus Defence and Space, BEU (Project ID: 2014-47912266-01), and TUBITAK (Project ID: 114Y380) for their support on the Pleiades projects. 23rd Congress of the International-Society-for-Photogrammetry-and-Remote-Sensing (ISPRS) -- JUL 12-19, 2016 -- Prague, CZECH REPUBLIC Airbus Defence and Space; BEU [2014-47912266-01]; TUBITAKTurkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Arastirma Kurumu (TUBITAK) [114Y380] Int Soc Photogrammetry & Remote Sensing WOS: 000392750100082

    Abstract. We study and analyse performance of a system for direct reflectance measurements from a drone. Key instruments of the system are upwards looking irradiance sensor and downwards looking imaging spectrometer. Requirement for both instruments is that they are radiometrically calibrated, the irradiance sensor has to be horizontally stabilized, and the sensors needs to be accurately synchronized. In our system, irradiance measurements are done with FGI Aerial Image Reference System (FGI AIRS), which uses novel optical levelling methodology and can compensate sensor tilting up to 15°. We performed SI-traceable spectral and radiance calibration of FPI hyperspectral camera at the National Physical Laboratory NPL (Teddington, UK). After the calibration, the radiance accuracy of different channels was between ±4 % when evaluated with independent test data. Sensors response to radiance proved to be highly linear and was on average 0.9994 for all channels. The spectral response calibration showed side peaks on several channels that were due to the multiple orders of interference of the FPI and highlighted the importance of accurate calibration. The drone-based direct reflectance measurement system showed promising results with imagery collected over Jokioinen agricultural grass test site, Finland. AIRS-based image- and band wise image adjustment provided homogenous and seamless image mosaics even under varying illumination conditions and under clouds.

    Abstract. In the last years many efforts have been invested in the cultural heritage digitization: surveying, modelling, diagnostic analysis and historic data collection. Nowadays, this effort is finalized in many cases towards the Historical Building Information Modelling. The number of informative models testifying the multifaceted richness and unicity of the architectural heritage and its components is progressively increasing. Information and Model are generally acquired under researches and analysis phases addressed to the preservation and restoration process. Unfortunately, once concluded the research such documentation is mostly left abandoned in the drawers or in the local memory of the computers, and in some cases totally missed. Just a few of them are saved in a server or in the cloud for the duration of the restoration, but without any connection with the maintenance process of historic architectures or knowledge transfer purposes and dissemination. This data loss would lead to the breaking of the cycle of past, present and future, with loss of memory and knowledge. The paper start facing the aspect of managing the information and models acquired on the case of vaulted systems. Information is collected within a semantic based hub platform to perform cross co-relation at a PanEuropean level. Such functionality allows to reconstruct the rich history of the construction techniques and skilled workers across Europe, enriched by 3 case studies surveyed in Prague region. To this purpose a Vault DB has been undertaken with a Vocabulary enriched by the granular information gained from the HBIM models, and with the vault sub-typologies highlighted by a detailed surveying.

    Abstract. Water quality is an important index of the ecological environment, which changes rapidly and needs to be monitored chronically. In urban ecological environment, water quality problem is not only more serious, but also more complex in time and space. Remote sensing water quality monitoring can cover a large area in a short time. Therefore, remote sensing can be adopted to make up for the shortcomings of traditional water quality monitoring methods in space coverage and temporal resolution. In order to monitor the narrow rivers in urban area, low altitude remote sensing is needed. This paper proposes a multi-spectral water quality monitoring method based on UAV platform, which can quickly monitor an entire urban water area and conduct multi-temporal observation for key indices of water quality within one day. It is helpful to find and locate the polluted areas which affect the water environment quickly. Also, it can show the changes of water quality on the time axis. The result can provide a decision-making basis for water environment treatment.

    Abstract. Crop Surface Models (CSMs) are 2.5D raster surfaces representing absolute plant canopy height. Using multiple CMSs generated from data acquired at multiple time steps, a crop surface monitoring is enabled. This makes it possible to monitor crop growth over time and can be used for monitoring in-field crop growth variability which is useful in the context of high-throughput phenotyping. This study aims to evaluate several software packages for dense 3D reconstruction from multiple overlapping RGB images on field and plot-scale. A summer barley field experiment located at the Campus Klein-Altendorf of University of Bonn was observed by acquiring stereo images from an oblique angle using consumer-grade smart cameras. Two such cameras were mounted at an elevation of 10 m and acquired images for a period of two months during the growing period of 2014. The field experiment consisted of nine barley cultivars that were cultivated in multiple repetitions and nitrogen treatments. Manual plant height measurements were carried out at four dates during the observation period. The software packages Agisoft PhotoScan, VisualSfM with CMVS/PMVS2 and SURE are investigated. The point clouds are georeferenced through a set of ground control points. Where adequate results are reached, a statistical analysis is performed.

    Abstract. Leishmaniasis encompasses a group of vector-borne parasitic diseases, characterized by their diversity and complexity, that affect both humans and other vertebrates. They are caused by different species of parasites of the Leishmania genus, which are transmitted by bites from hematophagous female sandflies. This work proposed to model the occurrence probability of five sandflies species of sanitary interest for South America, from a bibliographic compilation of records of the last 10 years. To develop the model, the free software MaxEnt was used. This exploratory analysis made it possible to visualize the areas where the species are distributed. In addition, we analyzed land changes in vegetation around a town in Jujuy province, Argentina, where a leishmaniasis outbreak occurred during the years 2017 and 2018. For this, Sentinel-2 images were used, and a change vector was calculated for the difference between two dates of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). This part of the work was made using SNAP software for images pre-procesing, Python for the change vector obtention and QGIS for the result post-procesing. From the exploration of MaxEnt software we were able to know the most suitable places for the distribution of the most important five species in the study region, and therefore, to project future decision-making to prevent and control leishmaniasis transmission. And in turn, obtain an approximation of how anthropogenic activities, as deforestation, can have an influence on leishmaniasis specific outbreaks transmitted by these species. Finally, from the exploration of the different tools used in this work, the importance of validation with field data for the generation of accurate analyses and predictions is highlighted. It implies that more data collection is necessary to validate the models and analyzes generated, to guarantee the contribution of the tools in macro-ecological studies of species linked to disease transmission.

    Authors: Majid, Z.; Lau, C. L.; Yusoff, A. R.;

    Authors: Topan, H.; Cam, A.; Özendi, M.; Oruç, M.; +20 Authors

    Authors: Rodriguez Gonzalez, C.; Acevedo Arcia, Y.; Frank Buss, E.;
