Karagianni;Abstract. Scientific and professional interests of civil engineering mainly include structures, hydraulics, geotechnical engineering, environment, and transportation issues. Topics included in the context of the above may concern urban environment issues, urban planning, hydrological modelling, study of hazards and road construction. Land cover information contributes significantly on the study of the above subjects. Land cover information can be acquired effectively by visual image interpretation of satellite imagery or after applying enhancement routines and also by imagery classification. The Landsat Data Continuity Mission (LDCM – Landsat 8) is the latest satellite in Landsat series, launched in February 2013. Landsat 8 medium spatial resolution multispectral imagery presents particular interest in extracting land cover, because of the fine spectral resolution, the radiometric quantization of 12bits, the capability of merging the high resolution panchromatic band of 15 meters with multispectral imagery of 30 meters as well as the policy of free data. In this paper, Landsat 8 multispectral and panchromatic imageries are being used, concerning surroundings of a lake in north-western Greece. Land cover information is extracted, using suitable digital image processing software. The rich spectral context of the multispectral image is combined with the high spatial resolution of the panchromatic image, applying image fusion – pansharpening, facilitating in this way visual image interpretation to delineate land cover. Further processing concerns supervised image classification. The classification of pansharpened image preceded multispectral image classification. Corresponding comparative considerations are also presented.

Precise and accurate three-dimensional geospatial data has become increasingly available thanks to advances in both Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) and Structure-from-Motion Photogrammetry (SfM). These tools provide valuable information for mapping geomorphological features and detect surface changes in mountainous environments. The exploitation of 3D point-clouds has been proven tremendously useful in the field of geosciences. It remains, however, controversial whether cost efficient photogrammetry can provide as accurate and reliable geospatial information as the significantly more expensive laser scanning or not. In this study, a rockfall case site in the territory of Obergurgl, Austria, is investigated in order to provide answers to the above question in a complex environment. The analysis includes different terrestrial photogrammetry configurations aiming to comprehensively define the strengths and limitations of terrestrial photogrammetry over TLS. The latter constitutes an optimized methodology that provides guidelines for costly future assessments as part of the site investigation phase in geohazard management. There are no doubts that compared to traditional and conventional surveying methods TLS and Photogrammetry both offer products much faster and with a much higher data density. In the current study, we show that when photogrammetry is applied following a well-defined optimized strategy, it can be potentially an adequate alternative to more costly TLS datasets for mass movement assessment and monitoring purposes.

Building damage assessment caused by earthquakes is essential during the response phase following a catastrophic event. Modern techniques include terrestrial and aerial photogrammetry based on Structure from Motion algorithm and Laser Scanning with the latter to prove its superiority in accuracy assessment due to the high-density point clouds. However, standardized procedures during emergency surveys often could not be followed due to restrictions of outdoor operations because of debris or decrepit buildings, the high human presence of civil protection agencies, expedited deployment of survey team and cost of operations. The aim of this paper is to evaluate whether terrestrial photogrammetry based on a handheld amateur DSLR camera can be used to map building damages, structural deformations and facade production in an accepted accuracy comparing to laser scanning technique. The study area is the Vrisa village, Lesvos, Greece where a Mw 6.3 earthquake occurred on June 12th, 2017. A dense point cloud from some digital images created based on Structure from Motion algorithm and compared with a dense point cloud acquired by a laser scanner. The distance measurement and the comparison were conducted with the Multiscale Model to Model Cloud Comparison method. According to the results, the mean of the absolute distances between the two clouds is 0.038 m while the 94.9 % of the point distances are less than 0.1 m. Terrestrial photogrammetry proved to be an accurate methodology for rapid earthquake damage assessment thus its products were used by local authorities for the calculation of the compensation for the property loss.

Bagni;Innovation Technologies and Applications for Coastal Archaeological sites project (ITACA) aims to develop and test a management system for underwater archaeological sites in coastal regions. The discovering and monitoring service will use innovative satellite remote sensing techniques combined with image processing algorithms. The project will develop a set of applications integrated in a system pursuing the following objectives: – Search and location of ancient ship wrecks; – Monitoring of ship wrecks, ruins and historical artefacts that are now submerged; – Integration of resulting search and monitoring data with on-site data into a management tool for underwater sites; – Demonstration of the system’s suitability for a service. High resolution synthetic aperture radar (TerraSAR-X, Cosmo-SkyMed) and multispectral satellite data (WorldView) will be combined to derive the relative bathymetry of the bottom of the sea up to the depth of 50 meters. The resulting data fusion will be processed using shape detection algorithms specific for archaeological items. The new algorithms, the physical modelling and the computational capabilities will be integrated into the Web-GIS, together with data recorded from surface (2D and 3D modelling) and from underwater surveys. Additional specific archaeological layers will be included into the WebGIS to facilitate the object identification through shape detection techniques and mapping. The system will be verified and validated through an extensive onground (sea) campaign carried out with both cutting edge technologies (side-scan sonar, multi beam echo sounder) and traditional means (professional scuba divers) in two test sites in Italy and Greece. The project is leaded by Planetek Hellas E.P.E. and include ALMA Sistemi sas for the “shape detection” and dissemination tasks, DHI-GRAS and Kell Srl for multispectral and SAR bathymetry. The complete consortium is composed by eleven partners and the project Kick-Off has been held in January 2014. The present contribution aims to present the project research achievements and finding at the mid-term review.

The indirect estimation of leaf area index (LAI) in large spatial scales is crucial for several environmental and agricultural applications. To this end, in this paper, we compare and evaluate LAI estimation in vineyards from different UAV imaging datasets. In particular, canopy levels were estimated from i.e., (i) hyperspectral data, (ii) 2D RGB orthophotomosaics and (iii) 3D crop surface models. The computed canopy levels have been used to establish relationships with the measured LAI (ground truth) from several vines in Nemea, Greece. The overall evaluation indicated that the estimated canopy levels were correlated (r2 > 73%) with the in-situ, ground truth LAI measurements. As expected the lowest correlations were derived from the calculated greenness levels from the 2D RGB orthomosaics. The highest correlation rates were established with the hyperspectral canopy greenness and the 3D canopy surface models. For the later the accurate detection of canopy, soil and other materials in between the vine rows is required. All approaches tend to overestimate LAI in cases with sparse, weak, unhealthy plants and canopy.

In this paper results from the evaluation of several state-of-the-art pansharpening techniques are presented for the VNIR and SWIR bands of Sentinel-2. A procedure for the pansharpening is also proposed which aims at respecting the closest spectral similarities between the higher and lower resolution bands. The evaluation included 21 different fusion algorithms and three evaluation frameworks based both on standard quantitative image similarity indexes and qualitative evaluation from remote sensing experts. The overall analysis of the evaluation results indicated that remote sensing experts disagreed with the outcomes and method ranking from the quantitative assessment. The employed image quality similarity indexes and quantitative evaluation framework based on both high and reduced resolution data from the literature didn’t manage to highlight/evaluate mainly the spatial information that was injected to the lower resolution images. Regarding the SWIR bands none of the methods managed to deliver significantly better results than a standard bicubic interpolation on the original low resolution bands.

Hadjimitsis;The concept of sustainable intensification in agriculture necessitates the implementation of management practices that prioritize sustainability without compromising productivity. However, the effects of such practices are known to depend on environmental conditions, and are therefore expected to change as a result of a changing climate. We study the impact of crop diversification on productivity in the context of climate change. We leverage heterogeneous Earth Observation data and contribute a data-driven approach based on causal machine learning for understanding how crop diversification impacts may change in the future. We apply this method to the country of Cyprus throughout a 4-year period. We find that, on average, crop diversification significantly benefited the net primary productivity of crops, increasing it by 2.8%. The effect generally synergized well with higher maximum temperatures and lower soil moistures. In a warmer and more drought-prone climate, we conclude that crop diversification exhibits promising adaptation potential and is thus a sensible policy choice with regards to agricultural productivity for present and future. Vegetation height plays a crucial role in various ecological and environmental applications, such as biodiversity assessment and monitoring, landscape characterization, conservation planning and disaster management. Its estimation is traditionally based on in situ measurements or airborne Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) sensors. However, such methods are often proven insufficient in covering large area landscapes due to high demands in cost, labor and time. Considering a multispectral image from a passive satellite sensor as the only available source of information, we propose and evaluate new ways of discriminating vegetated habitat species according to their height, through calculation of texture analysis measures, based on local variance, entropy and local binary patterns. The methodology is applied in a Quickbird image of Le Cesine protected site, Italy. The proposed methods are proven particularly effective in discriminating low and mid phanerophytes from tall phanerophytes, having a height of less and more than 2 meters, respectively. The results indicate a promising alternative in vegetation height estimation when in situ or LiDAR data are not available or affordable, thus facilitating and reducing the cost of ecological monitoring and environmental sustainability planning tasks.

The aim of this paper is to present the methodology followed and the results obtained by the synergistic exploitation of geo-information methods towards 3D mapping of the impact of the catastrophic earthquake of June 12th 2017 on the traditional settlement of Vrisa on the island of Lesvos, Greece. A campaign took place for collecting: a) more than 150 ground control points using an RTK system, b) more than 20.000 high-resolution terrestrial and aerial images using cameras and Unmanned Aircraft Systems and c) 140 point clouds by a 3D Terrestrial Laser Scanner. The Structure from Motion method has been applied on the high-resolution terrestrial and aerial photographs, for producing accurate and very detailed 3D models of the damaged buildings of the Vrisa settlement. Additionally, two Orthophoto maps and Digital Surface Models have been created, with a spatial resolution of 5 cm and 3 cm, respectively. The first orthophoto map has been created just one day after the earthquake, while the second one, a month later. In parallel, 3D laser scanning data have been exploited in order to validate the accuracy of the 3D models and the RTK measurements used for the geo-registration of all the above-mentioned datasets. The significant advantages of the proposed methodology are: a) the coverage of large scale areas; b) the production of 3D models having very high spatial resolution and c) the support of post-earthquake management and reconstruction processes of the Vrisa village, since such 3D information can serve all stakeholders, be it national and/or local organizations.

Recently a preliminary version of the new global DEM collected by the TanDEM-X mission became available to the scientific community: the TanDEM-X Intermediate DEM (IDEM) version. It is available over selected areas of the globe with a pixel spacing of 0.4, 1 and 3 arc-seconds. This paper presents the TanDEM-X IDEM with respect to global and local elevation data over Aegean Islands with mountainous terrain: the SRTM and ASTER global DEMs, and the national network of triangulation pillars (trig-points) and national archive Digital Terrain Model. Possible systematic 3D translations between global DEMs and local data are also determined and the relative gain in accuracy is assessed. TanDEM-X IDEM is shown to be dramatically enhanced with respect to the other global DEMs although a few jitters exist.

Karagianni;Abstract. Scientific and professional interests of civil engineering mainly include structures, hydraulics, geotechnical engineering, environment, and transportation issues. Topics included in the context of the above may concern urban environment issues, urban planning, hydrological modelling, study of hazards and road construction. Land cover information contributes significantly on the study of the above subjects. Land cover information can be acquired effectively by visual image interpretation of satellite imagery or after applying enhancement routines and also by imagery classification. The Landsat Data Continuity Mission (LDCM – Landsat 8) is the latest satellite in Landsat series, launched in February 2013. Landsat 8 medium spatial resolution multispectral imagery presents particular interest in extracting land cover, because of the fine spectral resolution, the radiometric quantization of 12bits, the capability of merging the high resolution panchromatic band of 15 meters with multispectral imagery of 30 meters as well as the policy of free data. In this paper, Landsat 8 multispectral and panchromatic imageries are being used, concerning surroundings of a lake in north-western Greece. Land cover information is extracted, using suitable digital image processing software. The rich spectral context of the multispectral image is combined with the high spatial resolution of the panchromatic image, applying image fusion – pansharpening, facilitating in this way visual image interpretation to delineate land cover. Further processing concerns supervised image classification. The classification of pansharpened image preceded multispectral image classification. Corresponding comparative considerations are also presented.

Precise and accurate three-dimensional geospatial data has become increasingly available thanks to advances in both Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) and Structure-from-Motion Photogrammetry (SfM). These tools provide valuable information for mapping geomorphological features and detect surface changes in mountainous environments. The exploitation of 3D point-clouds has been proven tremendously useful in the field of geosciences. It remains, however, controversial whether cost efficient photogrammetry can provide as accurate and reliable geospatial information as the significantly more expensive laser scanning or not. In this study, a rockfall case site in the territory of Obergurgl, Austria, is investigated in order to provide answers to the above question in a complex environment. The analysis includes different terrestrial photogrammetry configurations aiming to comprehensively define the strengths and limitations of terrestrial photogrammetry over TLS. The latter constitutes an optimized methodology that provides guidelines for costly future assessments as part of the site investigation phase in geohazard management. There are no doubts that compared to traditional and conventional surveying methods TLS and Photogrammetry both offer products much faster and with a much higher data density. In the current study, we show that when photogrammetry is applied following a well-defined optimized strategy, it can be potentially an adequate alternative to more costly TLS datasets for mass movement assessment and monitoring purposes.

Building damage assessment caused by earthquakes is essential during the response phase following a catastrophic event. Modern techniques include terrestrial and aerial photogrammetry based on Structure from Motion algorithm and Laser Scanning with the latter to prove its superiority in accuracy assessment due to the high-density point clouds. However, standardized procedures during emergency surveys often could not be followed due to restrictions of outdoor operations because of debris or decrepit buildings, the high human presence of civil protection agencies, expedited deployment of survey team and cost of operations. The aim of this paper is to evaluate whether terrestrial photogrammetry based on a handheld amateur DSLR camera can be used to map building damages, structural deformations and facade production in an accepted accuracy comparing to laser scanning technique. The study area is the Vrisa village, Lesvos, Greece where a Mw 6.3 earthquake occurred on June 12th, 2017. A dense point cloud from some digital images created based on Structure from Motion algorithm and compared with a dense point cloud acquired by a laser scanner. The distance measurement and the comparison were conducted with the Multiscale Model to Model Cloud Comparison method. According to the results, the mean of the absolute distances between the two clouds is 0.038 m while the 94.9 % of the point distances are less than 0.1 m. Terrestrial photogrammetry proved to be an accurate methodology for rapid earthquake damage assessment thus its products were used by local authorities for the calculation of the compensation for the property loss.

Bagni;Innovation Technologies and Applications for Coastal Archaeological sites project (ITACA) aims to develop and test a management system for underwater archaeological sites in coastal regions. The discovering and monitoring service will use innovative satellite remote sensing techniques combined with image processing algorithms. The project will develop a set of applications integrated in a system pursuing the following objectives: – Search and location of ancient ship wrecks; – Monitoring of ship wrecks, ruins and historical artefacts that are now submerged; – Integration of resulting search and monitoring data with on-site data into a management tool for underwater sites; – Demonstration of the system’s suitability for a service. High resolution synthetic aperture radar (TerraSAR-X, Cosmo-SkyMed) and multispectral satellite data (WorldView) will be combined to derive the relative bathymetry of the bottom of the sea up to the depth of 50 meters. The resulting data fusion will be processed using shape detection algorithms specific for archaeological items. The new algorithms, the physical modelling and the computational capabilities will be integrated into the Web-GIS, together with data recorded from surface (2D and 3D modelling) and from underwater surveys. Additional specific archaeological layers will be included into the WebGIS to facilitate the object identification through shape detection techniques and mapping. The system will be verified and validated through an extensive onground (sea) campaign carried out with both cutting edge technologies (side-scan sonar, multi beam echo sounder) and traditional means (professional scuba divers) in two test sites in Italy and Greece. The project is leaded by Planetek Hellas E.P.E. and include ALMA Sistemi sas for the “shape detection” and dissemination tasks, DHI-GRAS and Kell Srl for multispectral and SAR bathymetry. The complete consortium is composed by eleven partners and the project Kick-Off has been held in January 2014. The present contribution aims to present the project research achievements and finding at the mid-term review.

The indirect estimation of leaf area index (LAI) in large spatial scales is crucial for several environmental and agricultural applications. To this end, in this paper, we compare and evaluate LAI estimation in vineyards from different UAV imaging datasets. In particular, canopy levels were estimated from i.e., (i) hyperspectral data, (ii) 2D RGB orthophotomosaics and (iii) 3D crop surface models. The computed canopy levels have been used to establish relationships with the measured LAI (ground truth) from several vines in Nemea, Greece. The overall evaluation indicated that the estimated canopy levels were correlated (r2 > 73%) with the in-situ, ground truth LAI measurements. As expected the lowest correlations were derived from the calculated greenness levels from the 2D RGB orthomosaics. The highest correlation rates were established with the hyperspectral canopy greenness and the 3D canopy surface models. For the later the accurate detection of canopy, soil and other materials in between the vine rows is required. All approaches tend to overestimate LAI in cases with sparse, weak, unhealthy plants and canopy.

In this paper results from the evaluation of several state-of-the-art pansharpening techniques are presented for the VNIR and SWIR bands of Sentinel-2. A procedure for the pansharpening is also proposed which aims at respecting the closest spectral similarities between the higher and lower resolution bands. The evaluation included 21 different fusion algorithms and three evaluation frameworks based both on standard quantitative image similarity indexes and qualitative evaluation from remote sensing experts. The overall analysis of the evaluation results indicated that remote sensing experts disagreed with the outcomes and method ranking from the quantitative assessment. The employed image quality similarity indexes and quantitative evaluation framework based on both high and reduced resolution data from the literature didn’t manage to highlight/evaluate mainly the spatial information that was injected to the lower resolution images. Regarding the SWIR bands none of the methods managed to deliver significantly better results than a standard bicubic interpolation on the original low resolution bands.

Hadjimitsis;The concept of sustainable intensification in agriculture necessitates the implementation of management practices that prioritize sustainability without compromising productivity. However, the effects of such practices are known to depend on environmental conditions, and are therefore expected to change as a result of a changing climate. We study the impact of crop diversification on productivity in the context of climate change. We leverage heterogeneous Earth Observation data and contribute a data-driven approach based on causal machine learning for understanding how crop diversification impacts may change in the future. We apply this method to the country of Cyprus throughout a 4-year period. We find that, on average, crop diversification significantly benefited the net primary productivity of crops, increasing it by 2.8%. The effect generally synergized well with higher maximum temperatures and lower soil moistures. In a warmer and more drought-prone climate, we conclude that crop diversification exhibits promising adaptation potential and is thus a sensible policy choice with regards to agricultural productivity for present and future. Vegetation height plays a crucial role in various ecological and environmental applications, such as biodiversity assessment and monitoring, landscape characterization, conservation planning and disaster management. Its estimation is traditionally based on in situ measurements or airborne Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) sensors. However, such methods are often proven insufficient in covering large area landscapes due to high demands in cost, labor and time. Considering a multispectral image from a passive satellite sensor as the only available source of information, we propose and evaluate new ways of discriminating vegetated habitat species according to their height, through calculation of texture analysis measures, based on local variance, entropy and local binary patterns. The methodology is applied in a Quickbird image of Le Cesine protected site, Italy. The proposed methods are proven particularly effective in discriminating low and mid phanerophytes from tall phanerophytes, having a height of less and more than 2 meters, respectively. The results indicate a promising alternative in vegetation height estimation when in situ or LiDAR data are not available or affordable, thus facilitating and reducing the cost of ecological monitoring and environmental sustainability planning tasks.

The aim of this paper is to present the methodology followed and the results obtained by the synergistic exploitation of geo-information methods towards 3D mapping of the impact of the catastrophic earthquake of June 12th 2017 on the traditional settlement of Vrisa on the island of Lesvos, Greece. A campaign took place for collecting: a) more than 150 ground control points using an RTK system, b) more than 20.000 high-resolution terrestrial and aerial images using cameras and Unmanned Aircraft Systems and c) 140 point clouds by a 3D Terrestrial Laser Scanner. The Structure from Motion method has been applied on the high-resolution terrestrial and aerial photographs, for producing accurate and very detailed 3D models of the damaged buildings of the Vrisa settlement. Additionally, two Orthophoto maps and Digital Surface Models have been created, with a spatial resolution of 5 cm and 3 cm, respectively. The first orthophoto map has been created just one day after the earthquake, while the second one, a month later. In parallel, 3D laser scanning data have been exploited in order to validate the accuracy of the 3D models and the RTK measurements used for the geo-registration of all the above-mentioned datasets. The significant advantages of the proposed methodology are: a) the coverage of large scale areas; b) the production of 3D models having very high spatial resolution and c) the support of post-earthquake management and reconstruction processes of the Vrisa village, since such 3D information can serve all stakeholders, be it national and/or local organizations.

Recently a preliminary version of the new global DEM collected by the TanDEM-X mission became available to the scientific community: the TanDEM-X Intermediate DEM (IDEM) version. It is available over selected areas of the globe with a pixel spacing of 0.4, 1 and 3 arc-seconds. This paper presents the TanDEM-X IDEM with respect to global and local elevation data over Aegean Islands with mountainous terrain: the SRTM and ASTER global DEMs, and the national network of triangulation pillars (trig-points) and national archive Digital Terrain Model. Possible systematic 3D translations between global DEMs and local data are also determined and the relative gain in accuracy is assessed. TanDEM-X IDEM is shown to be dramatically enhanced with respect to the other global DEMs although a few jitters exist.
