    Le Shiitake, Lentinula edodes, est un champignon comestible asiatique qui est produit actuellement en occident grâce au developpement de nouvelles methodes de culture. L'une des limites principales de la methode de culture sur paille de ble pasteurisee qui est utilisee en France et dans les autres pays europeens est la croissance de champignons antagonistes, Trichoderma spp., dans les substrats de culture. En prenant en compte des connaissances sur les interactions entre L. edodes and Trichoderma spp., nous avons teste deux ameliorations de la methode de culture : la supplementation du substrat avec de la tourbe et l'utilisation d'un nouveau support d'inoculum active. Un cumul des donnees recueillies avec sept souches de L. edodes dans des conditions de contamination naturelles par Trichoderma spp. est reporte. Les deux changements apportes a la methode de culture ameliorent l'aptitude competitive de L. edodes, diminuent l'impact de Trichoderma spp., et augmentent le rendement en champignons.

    Selecting cost-effective measures to regulate agricultural water pollution to conform to the Water Framework Directive presents multiple challenges. A bio-economic modelling approach is presented that has been used to explore the water quality and economic effects of the 2003 Common Agricultural Policy Reform and to assess the cost-effectiveness of input quotas and emission standards against nitrate leaching, in a representative case study catchment in Scotland. The approach combines a biophysical model (NDICEA) with a mathematical programming model (FSSIM-MP). The results indicate only small changes due to the Reform, with the main changes in farmers’ decision making and the associated economic and water quality indicators depending on crop price changes, and suggest the use of target fertilisation in relation to crop and soil requirements, as opposed to measures targeting farm total or average nitrogen use.; La sélection des mesures coût-efficacité pour régler la pollution de l'eau en agriculture conformément à la Directive Cadre sur l'eau présente de multiples défis. Une approche de modélisation bioéconomique est utilisée pour étudier la qualité de l'eau et les effets économiques de la réforme de la PAC de 2003 et évaluer le rapport coût-efficacité des quotas d'entrée et de normes d'émission contre le lessivage des nitrates, à travers une étude de cas représentative d’un bassin versant en Ecosse. L'approche combine un modèle biophysique (NDICEA) et un modèle de programmation mathématique (FSSIM-MP). Les résultats montrent seulement de petits changements en raison de la réforme de la PAC et suggèrent l'utilisation de la fertilisation ciblée en relation aux cultures et aux besoins du sol, par opposition à des mesures visant le niveau total ou moyen d'utilisation d’azote dans l’exploitation.

    Animal location technologies have evolved considerably in the last 60 years. Nowadays, animal tracking solutions based on global positioning systems (GPS) are commercially available. However, existing devices have several constraints, mostly related to wireless data transmission and financial cost, which make impractical the monitorization of all the animals in a herd. The main objective of this work is to develop a low-cost solution to enable the monitorization of a whole herd. An IoT-based system, which requires some animals of the herd being fitted with GPS collars connected to a Sigfox network and the rest with low-cost Bluetooth tags, has been developed. Its performance has been tested in two commercial farms, raising sheep and beef cattle, through the monitorization of 50 females in each case. Several collar/tag ratios, which define the cost per animal of the solution, have been simulated. Results demonstrate that a low collar/tag ratio enable the monitorization of a whole sheep herd. A larger ratio is needed for beef cows because of their grazing behavior. Nevertheless, the optimal ratio depends on the purpose of location data. Large variability has been observed for the number of hourly and daily messages from collars and tags. The system effectiveness for the monitorization of all the animals in a herd has been certainly proved.

    International audience; The high plains of Lebanon are subject to water erosion which tends to strip its soils and threaten its agricultural activities. The combined effect of anthropogenic actions (cultural management, deforestation, overgrazing) and natural factors (climatic aggressiveness, steep slopes, soil), weakens the soil and threatens agricultural parcels by depositing sediments. Mhaydssé is a village concerned by this problem and its representative of the natural and anthropogenic conditions of the Békaa’s southeast. The study uses GIS and the Universal Earth Loss Equation (USLE). To replace the intensity of precipitation, the aggressiveness index was calculated from the equation of Renard and Freimund. Five soil types were sampled, for which the soil granulometry was analyzed in five classes. The topography (slope), the vegetation cover and the anti-erosion practices are the other factors that have been quantified. Of the 1800 hectares of the study area, the average loss of land is 46 t / ha / year. This high value comes from a high spatial heterogeneity. The barren slopes are subject to rates above 300 t /ha /yr, while the bottom of the plain is practically untouched. Large spatial differences over small distances confirm the thoroughness of an accurate analysis of soil texture.; Le Liban des hautes plaines subit une érosion hydrique qui tend à décaper ses sols et menacer ses activités agricoles. L’effet conjugué des actions anthropiques (conduites culturales, déboisement, surpâturage) et des facteurs naturels (agressivité climatique, versants abrupts, sol), fragilise le sol et menace les parcelles agricoles par le depôt des sédiments. Mhaydssé est un village concerné par le problème, représentatif des conditions naturelles et anthropiques du sud-est de la Békaa. L’étude utilise les SIG et l’équation universelle des pertes en terre (USLE). Pour remplacer l’intensité des précipitations, l’indice d’agressivité a été calculé à partir de l’équation de Renard et Freimund. Cinq types de sols ont été échantillonnés, pour lesquels la granulométrie a été analysée en cinq classes. La topographie (pente), le couvert végétal et les pratiques anti-érosives sont les autres facteurs qui ont été quantifiés. Sur les 1800 hectares du terrain d’étude, la perte moyenne en terre est de 46 t/ha/an. Cette valeur élevée est issue d’une grande hétérogénéité spatiale. Les versants dénudés subissent des taux supérieurs à 300 t/ha/an, tandis que le fond de la plaine n’est pratiquement pas touché. Les grandes différences spatiales sur de petites distances confirment le bienfondé d’une analyse précise de la texture des sols.

    The contamination of agricultural soils with inorganic (Cu-based) and organic pesticides (including their residues) presents a major environmental and toxicological concern. This review summarizes available studies published on the contamination of vineyard soils throughout the world with Cu-based and synthetic organic fungicides. It focuses on the behavior of these contaminants in vineyard soils and the associated environmental and toxicological risks. The concentrations of Cu in soils exceed the legislative limits valid in the EU in the vast majority of the studied vineyards. Regarding the environmental and toxicological hazards associated with the extensive use of fungicides, the choice of fungicides should be performed carefully according to the physico-chemical properties of the soils and climatic and hydrogeological characteristics of the vine-growing regions.     International audience; Ecological intensification is a new concept in agriculture that addresses the double challenge of maintaining a level of production sufficient to support needs of human populations and respecting the environment in order to conserve the natural world and human quality of life. This article adapts this concept to fish farming using agroecological principles and the ecosystem services framework. The method was developed from the study of published literature and applications at four study sites chosen for their differences in production intensity: polyculture ponds in France, integrated pig and pond polyculture in Brazil, the culture of striped catfish in Indonesia and a recirculating salmon aquaculture system in France. The study of stakeholders' perceptions of ecosystem services combined with environmental assessment through Life Cycle Assessment and Emergy accounting allowed development of an assessment tool that was used as a basis for co-building evolution scenarios. From this experience, ecological intensifica-tion of aquaculture was defined as the use of ecological processes and functions to increase productivity, strengthen ecosystem services and decrease disservices. It is based on aquaecosystem and biodiversity management and the use of local and traditional knowledge. Expected consequences for farming systems consist of greater autonomy, efficiency and better integration into their surrounding territories. Ecological intensification requires territorial governance and helps improve it from a sustainable development perspective.

    Abstract. Droughts continue to affect ecosystems, communities and entire economies. Agriculture bears much of the impact, and in many countries it is the most heavily affected sector. Over the past decades, efforts have been made to assess drought risk at different spatial scales. Here, we present for the first time an integrated assessment of drought risk for both irrigated and rainfed agricultural systems at the global scale. Composite hazard indicators were calculated for irrigated and rainfed systems separately using different drought indices based on historical climate conditions (1980–2016). Exposure was analyzed for irrigated and non-irrigated crops. Vulnerability was assessed through a socioecological-system (SES) perspective, using socioecological susceptibility and lack of coping-capacity indicators that were weighted by drought experts from around the world. The analysis shows that drought risk of rainfed and irrigated agricultural systems displays a heterogeneous pattern at the global level, with higher risk for southeastern Europe as well as northern and southern Africa. By providing information on the drivers and spatial patterns of drought risk in all dimensions of hazard, exposure and vulnerability, the presented analysis can support the identification of tailored measures to reduce drought risk and increase the resilience of agricultural systems.

    Even if global warming is kept below +2°C, European agriculture will be significantly impacted. Soil degradation may amplify these impacts substantially and thus hamper crop production further. We quantify biophysical consequences and bracket uncertainty of +2°C warming on calories supply from ten major crops and vulnerability to soil degradation in Europe using crop modelling. The Environmental Policy Integrated Climate (EPIC) model together with regional climate projections from the European branch of the Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment (EURO-CORDEX) were used for this purpose. A robustly positive calorie yield change was estimated for the EU Member States except for some regions in Southern and South-Eastern Europe. The mean impacts range from +30 Gcal ha–1 in the north, through +25 and +20 Gcal ha–1 in Western and Eastern Europe, respectively, to +10 Gcal ha–1 in the south if soil degradation and heat impacts are not accounted for. Elevated CO2 and increased temperature are the dominant drivers of the simulated yield changes in high-input agricultural systems. The growth stimulus due to elevated CO2 may offset potentially negative yield impacts of temperature increase by +2°C in most of Europe. Soil degradation causes a calorie vulnerability ranging from 0 to 80 Gcal ha–1 due to insufficient compensation for nutrient depletion and this might undermine climate benefits in many regions, if not prevented by adaptation measures, especially in Eastern and North-Eastern Europe. Uncertainties due to future potentials for crop intensification are about two to fifty times higher than climate change impacts.

    Energy crops are currently promoted as potential sources of alternative energy that can help mitigate the climate change caused by greenhouse gases (GHGs). The perennial crop Miscanthus x giganteus is considered promising due to its high potential for biomass production under conditions of low input. However, to assess its potential for GHG mitigation, a better quantification of the crop's contribution to soil organic matter recycling under various management systems is needed. The aim of this work was to study the effect of abscised leaves on carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) recycling in a Miscanthus plantation. The dynamics of senescent leaf fall, the rate of leaf decomposition (using a litter bag approach) and the leaf accumulation at the soil surface were tracked over two 1-year periods under field conditions in Northern France. The fallen leaves represented an average yearly input of 1.40 Mg C ha-1 and 16 kg N ha-1. The abscised leaves lost approximately 54% of their initial mass in 1 year due to decomposition; the remaining mass, accumulated as a mulch layer at the soil surface, was equivalent to 7 Mg dry matter (DM) ha-1 5 years after planting. Based on the estimated annual leaf-C recycling rate and a stabilization rate of 35% of the added C, the annual contribution of the senescent leaves to the soil C was estimated to be approximately 0.50 Mg C ha-1yr-1 or 10 Mg C ha-1 total over the 20-year lifespan of a Miscanthus crop. This finding suggested that for Miscanthus, the abscised leaves contribute more to the soil C accumulation than do the rhizomes or roots. In contrast, the recycling of the leaf N to the soil was less than for the other N fluxes, particularly for those involving the transfer of N from the tops of the plant to the rhizome.

    Abstract The carbon and land footprint of 26 certified food products – geographical indications and organic products and their conventional references are assessed. This assessment goes beyond existing literature by (1) designing a calculation method fit for the comparison between certified food and conventional production, (2) using the same calculation method and parameters for 52 products – 26 Food Quality Schemes and their reference products – to allow for a meaningful comparison, (3) transparently documenting this calculation method and opening access to the detailed results and the underlying data, and (4) providing the first assessment of the carbon and land footprint of geographical indications. The method used is Life Cycle Assessment, largely relying on the Cool Farm Tool for the impact assessment. The most common indicator of climate impact, the carbon footprint expressed per ton of product, is not significantly different between certified foods and their reference products. The only exception to this pattern are vegetal organic products, whose carbon footprint is 16% lower. This is because the decrease in greenhouse gas emissions from the absence of mineral fertilizers is never fully offset by the associated lower yield. The climate impact of certified food per hectare is however 26% than their reference and their land footprint is logically 24% higher. Technical specifications directly or indirectly inducing a lower use of mineral fertilizers are a key driver of this pattern. So is yield, which depends both on terroir and farming practices. Overall, this assessment reinforces the quality policy of the European Union: promoting certified food is not inconsistent with mitigating climate change.

    Le Shiitake, Lentinula edodes, est un champignon comestible asiatique qui est produit actuellement en occident grâce au developpement de nouvelles methodes de culture. L'une des limites principales de la methode de culture sur paille de ble pasteurisee qui est utilisee en France et dans les autres pays europeens est la croissance de champignons antagonistes, Trichoderma spp., dans les substrats de culture. En prenant en compte des connaissances sur les interactions entre L. edodes and Trichoderma spp., nous avons teste deux ameliorations de la methode de culture : la supplementation du substrat avec de la tourbe et l'utilisation d'un nouveau support d'inoculum active. Un cumul des donnees recueillies avec sept souches de L. edodes dans des conditions de contamination naturelles par Trichoderma spp. est reporte. Les deux changements apportes a la methode de culture ameliorent l'aptitude competitive de L. edodes, diminuent l'impact de Trichoderma spp., et augmentent le rendement en champignons.

    Selecting cost-effective measures to regulate agricultural water pollution to conform to the Water Framework Directive presents multiple challenges. A bio-economic modelling approach is presented that has been used to explore the water quality and economic effects of the 2003 Common Agricultural Policy Reform and to assess the cost-effectiveness of input quotas and emission standards against nitrate leaching, in a representative case study catchment in Scotland. The approach combines a biophysical model (NDICEA) with a mathematical programming model (FSSIM-MP). The results indicate only small changes due to the Reform, with the main changes in farmers’ decision making and the associated economic and water quality indicators depending on crop price changes, and suggest the use of target fertilisation in relation to crop and soil requirements, as opposed to measures targeting farm total or average nitrogen use.; La sélection des mesures coût-efficacité pour régler la pollution de l'eau en agriculture conformément à la Directive Cadre sur l'eau présente de multiples défis. Une approche de modélisation bioéconomique est utilisée pour étudier la qualité de l'eau et les effets économiques de la réforme de la PAC de 2003 et évaluer le rapport coût-efficacité des quotas d'entrée et de normes d'émission contre le lessivage des nitrates, à travers une étude de cas représentative d’un bassin versant en Ecosse. L'approche combine un modèle biophysique (NDICEA) et un modèle de programmation mathématique (FSSIM-MP). Les résultats montrent seulement de petits changements en raison de la réforme de la PAC et suggèrent l'utilisation de la fertilisation ciblée en relation aux cultures et aux besoins du sol, par opposition à des mesures visant le niveau total ou moyen d'utilisation d’azote dans l’exploitation.

    Animal location technologies have evolved considerably in the last 60 years. Nowadays, animal tracking solutions based on global positioning systems (GPS) are commercially available. However, existing devices have several constraints, mostly related to wireless data transmission and financial cost, which make impractical the monitorization of all the animals in a herd. The main objective of this work is to develop a low-cost solution to enable the monitorization of a whole herd. An IoT-based system, which requires some animals of the herd being fitted with GPS collars connected to a Sigfox network and the rest with low-cost Bluetooth tags, has been developed. Its performance has been tested in two commercial farms, raising sheep and beef cattle, through the monitorization of 50 females in each case. Several collar/tag ratios, which define the cost per animal of the solution, have been simulated. Results demonstrate that a low collar/tag ratio enable the monitorization of a whole sheep herd. A larger ratio is needed for beef cows because of their grazing behavior. Nevertheless, the optimal ratio depends on the purpose of location data. Large variability has been observed for the number of hourly and daily messages from collars and tags. The system effectiveness for the monitorization of all the animals in a herd has been certainly proved.
