    The purpose of this article is to identify the reasons for the competitiveness of products, namely butter, manufactured in France, Belarus and Russia, and their wide use in the Kazakhstani market for 2011-2016, by comparing the food industry and the agricultural sector. The main problem of import substitution in Kazakhstan is the non-competitiveness of domestic industrial enterprises, which shows that they do not pay attention to product quality. Research questions are: Why do consumers in Kazakhstan prefer imported butter? What are the main criteria for this choice? Why are butter manufacturers in Kazakhstan not competitive? The study is aimed at performing the analysis of literarure review of butter production in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and France, as well as identifying what aspects of the quality, import and competition of butter are discussed in Kazakhstan, Belarus, Russia and France. peer-reviewed

    Cow survival is a complex trait that combines traits like milk production, fertility, health and environmental factors such as farm management. This complexity makes survival difficult to predict accurately. This is probably the reason why few studies attempted to address this problem and no studies are published that use ensemble methods for this purpose. We explored if we could improve prediction of cow survival to second lactation, when predicted at five different moments in a cow’s life, by combining the predictions of multiple (weak) methods in an ensemble method. We tested four ensemble methods: majority voting rule, multiple logistic regression, random forest and naive Bayes. Precision, recall, balanced accuracy, area under the curve (AUC) and gains in proportion of surviving cows in a scenario where the best 50% were selected were used to evaluate the ensemble model performance. We also calculated correlations between the ensemble models and obtained McNemar’s test statistics. We compared the performance of the ensemble methods against those of the individual methods. We also tested if there was a difference in performance metrics when continuous (from 0 to 1) and binary (0 or 1) prediction outcomes were used. In general, using continuous prediction output resulted in higher performance metrics than binary ones. AUCs for models ranged from 0.561 to 0.731, with generally increasing performance at moments later in life. Precision, AUC and balanced accuracy values improved significantly for the naive Bayes and multiple logistic regression ensembles in at least one data set, although performance metrics did remain low overall. The multiple logistic regression ensemble method resulted in equal or better precision, AUC, balanced accuracy and proportion of animals surviving on all datasets and was significantly different from the other ensembles in three out of five moments. The random forest ensemble method resulted in the least significant improvement over the individual methods. peer-reviewed

    Current economic activity in the beet sugar industry is below its highest point, and this encourages to search for and to shape specific development strategies. This article analyses the current state of Russian sugar markets, domestically and internationally. The investigation over the strategic potential of effective beet sugar sub-complex development has involved 78 large agricultural enterprises and 59 peasant farms of the Republic of Bashkortostan. By total production output, sugar beet producers are classified into several groups. The first group, which is the highest, includes 10 backbone strategic enterprises, which can produce 897.9 thousand tons of sugar beet. The second group includes 19 enterprises and produces 442.5 thousand tons of sugar beet. The third group, not a priority group, includes 43 enterprises (333.3 thousand tons). A similar classificationt was done for peasant farms. From the assessment encompassing the strategic potential of sugar beet industry certain scenarios have been considered such as: business-as-usual (72.2%), extensive growth (83.3%), intensive growth (100.0%) and hybrid growth (122.2%). These scenarios were composed to forecast the production target achievements. Forecasts were made using a model of strategic development of beet sugar sub-complex of the Republic of Bashkortostan, for the period until 2020. The approach developed in this article is recommended to be used as a guideline in developing long-term regional programs for agriculture development. It can be also addressed to adjust some measures that are being taken under the launched programs. peer-reviewed

    PURPOSE: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) were forced to introduce remote education in a short period of time, regardless of the level of their technological competence. As a result, students and faculty changed their study mode from traditional to online within a few days. The aim of this study is to determine the impact of the teaching mode on the teaching quality perceived by students. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A survey of University of Information Technology and Management students was conducted in the summer semester preceding the pandemic in which traditional teaching was performed (n = 8,462, with 315 academic staff members evaluated) and in the summer semester during the pandemic where the mode of delivery was online (n = 15,738, with 248 academic staff members evaluated). PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: The results of the research make it possible to define further directions of academic staff development in order to improve students' satisfaction with the education process and allow for better preparation of universities for the digital transformation in the field of higher education. FINDINGS: A statistical analysis of the results, broken down by academic staff gender, academic title, and field of teaching, shows no significant changes in the evaluation of the quality of academic staff teaching in general. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: The paper verifies the readiness of teaching staff for distance learning, both from the perspective of teaching skills as well as technical and digital skills. peer-reviewed

    In this work, we report on the mechanical design and development, the kinematic analysis, and the simulation of a new dexterous robot finger. The robot finger design is based on that of the human counterpart in size, mechanical structure, and range of motion, and exhibits four distinct joint motions (one abduction/adduction or yaw motion, and three flexion/extension or pitch motions), as does the human finger. Three miniature DC motors with built-in encoders drive the yaw motion of the finger and the two innermost pitch joints. The finger therefore has three independent degrees of freedom. The outermost pitch joint of the finger is mechanically coupled to the middle joint, and the design allows for the variation of the ratio of angular speed between the two coupled joint motions. The motors are installed on the finger itself and on the adjoining section of palm, and the required torques at the joints are obtained through speed reduction transmission systems. An analytical study of the finger, including forward and inverse kinematics and differential kinematics analyses, static force analysis, and computation of joint velocity profiles for straight-line motion of the fingertip, has been carried out. The results of these analyses have been used to develop the control program for the finger, as well as a versatile simulation tool that can be used to optimise future designs of the finger. The simulation program has been validated by comparison to the results of tests carried out on the prototype finger. The ultimate aim of the work is to produce a dexterous robot hand to be used in a flexible manufacturing environment in industry or as a prosthetic device. peer-reviewed

    Purpose: The main focus is on the export and import of agricultural products in the EU in the years 2002-2017 outside the EU (extra-EU). Design/Methodology/Approach: This paper investigates the impact of EU (European Union) enlargement on food trade using descriptive statistics. First, EU-28 exports, imports, and trade balance of agricultural products outside the EU (extra-EU) are presented for 2002-2017. Findings: The trade balance between EU countries for food, beverages, and tobacco are also presented. Accession has led to the elimination of trade tariffs and accelerated improvements in trade. The most exported products by EU countries were alcoholic beverages (spirits and liquors, wine, and vermouth), bakery products, and wheat. Most of the export of agri-food products is directed to other EU countries, Russia, China, and various countries in South America, Africa, and Asia. Imports to EU countries comprised mostly of vegetables and fruits, coffee, tea, cocoa, and various fish products. Practical implications: The results will fill in the gap concerning the food trade of agricultural products in the EU. Originality/Value: The new information about extra EU trade of agricultural products and a GARCH (Generalized Autoregressive Conditionally Heteroscedastic) model was presented. peer-reviewed

    The development in the past decade of Industry 4.0 technologies has brought many new opportunities to manufacturers. The increased digitization of manufacturing operations has led to new modes of production and product development. This digitization has also increased the quantity of sensorial data which is easily available and which can be used to support real-time decision making. That said, with the oppor– tunities come as well a number of challenges. Principally amongst these is a skills gap within the workforce. Without the required knowledge organisations will find it difficult and complex not only to employ these technologies, but also to develop the new manufacturing paradigms of tomorrow. Hence an innovative and effective training methodology is required to address this skills and knowledge gap. As part of the development of this methodology, this paper presents the finding of a study carried out to analyse the knowledge and skills gap, preferred learning methods and styles of trainers, current and past students in engineering Higher Education Institutions. This requirements analysis has led to the specifications for a Digital Training Toolbox, which can be utilised to support the implementation of Inudstry 4.0 technologies and organisational concepts. peer-reviewed

    Purpose: At present, high and sometimes record indicators have been achieved for the individual branches of agricultural production. Further intensive development of agriculture is due to the search for new ways to increase labor productivity and lower production costs which is the main aim of this research. Design/Methodology/Approach: The methodological basis served as a systematic approach, which ensured comprehensiveness and purposefulness. Analytical, abstract-logical, economic-statistical, monographic and experimental research methods were also used in this work to examine problems and prospects of sectoral digitalization. Findings: The agro-industrial complex demonstrates the growth of production indicators and is on the rise. The target indicators, laid down in the Food Security Doctrine, have already been achieved by many indices. To a large extent, it is due to a significant increase in the agro-industrial complex. Practical implications: A proposed platform that would ensure a breakthrough in further technical modernization of production, can be created only if the technologies are improved based on their digitalization and orientation towards a specific consumer. Originality/Value: The pin-point introduction of digital technologies in agricultural production confirms the high efficiency of the full innovative technical modernization. The proposed digital transformation of management in the agro-industrial complex of Russia is the value of this research with its originality compared to other ideas. peer-reviewed

    Authors: Mickiewicz, Bartosz; Zaremba, Anetta; Bera, Milena;

    Purpose: The research aimed to identify the regularities in the dynamics and structure of phenomena occurring on the agricultural land market, emphasizing treasury real estate. The transactions came from the primary market in 1996-2001 and 2014-2019. The seller was the Agricultural Property Agency of the State Treasury, later transformed into the Agricultural Property Agency. Design/Methodology/Approach: In the scope of processing the collected data, the methods of inductive and deductive reasoning, descriptive and monographic, and statistical methods, were used. The research methodology was based on statistical measures in the field of structural analysis and changes over time. The structural analysis was carried out for the characteristics "price per ha" and "area" of agricultural land, for which empirical distributions were built and selected descriptive parameters were calculated. Findings: The conducted research shows that the price of 1 ha of arable land is determined primarily by the location rent. The highest unit prices were achieved by land with an area of up to 0.5 ha located near the Szczecin agglomeration, which is confirmed in both analyzed periods. The dynamics of agricultural land prices in 1996-2001 showed no clear development tendency, which proves an unstable market was transforming, susceptible to the external environment's influence, including the shaping of demand. Practical Implications: The article contains a lot of valuable information that may constitute a base material and a reference to further research carried out by scientific specialists researching the issues of the agricultural land market or agricultural property management institutions of the Agricultural Property Stock of the State Treasury. Originality/Value: The results of the comparative analysis and theoretical considerations supplement the research conducted so far in the field of prices on the agricultural land market in Poland and may become a valuable resource of knowledge useful in the preparation of dissertations in the field of agricultural property management. peer-reviewed

    Authors: Mickiewicz, Bartosz; Zaremba, Anetta; Bera, Milena;
