    This mixed-methods study examines the effects of a tablet-based checklist system on team performance during a dynamic and safety-critical process of trauma resuscitation. We compared team performance from 47 resuscitations that used a paper checklist to that from 47 cases with a digital checklist to determine if digitizing a checklist led to improvements in task completion rates and in how fast the tasks were initiated for 18 most critical assessment and treatment tasks. We also compared if the checklist compliance increased with the digital design. We found that using the digital checklist led to more frequent completions of the initial airway assessment task but fewer completions of ear and lower extremities exams. We did not observe any significant differences in time to task performance, but found increased compliance with the checklist. Although improvements in team performance with the digital checklist were minor, our findings are important because they showed no adverse effects as a result of the digital checklist introduction. We conclude by discussing the takeaways and implications of these results for effective digitization of medical work.

    This paper examines the determinants of farmers' access to agricultural extension services and adoption of technical inputs. It also attempts to identify what works best for Indian agriculture. Based upon all-India unit-level data of 35,200 farming households surveyed by the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) under the 70th round in 2013, it applies the binary logistic regression model. The study underlines that the ‘Access' to agricultural extension services does not guarantee ‘Adoption' of the technologies or better farm practices, as all the variables emerging as significant in case of ‘Access' do not emerge as significant for ‘Adoption'. The study finds the strong influence of personal and household characteristics on both ‘Access' and ‘Adoption'. However, socioeconomic and technology variables such as caste, gender, religion, and usage of ICT are found to be important for ‘Access' but not for the ‘Adoption'. The paper underlines that physical forms of extension services are far more important than the modern ICT driven services in the developing countries like India. It, therefore, recommends significant strengthening of these services with more generous government support.

    The potential of UAV-based data for fine-scaled remote sensing applications has been investigated for several years and is still increasing. The presented study is attached to the field of landform mapping. Mapping and extracting of landforms contributes to different sectors such as agriculture, disaster management and nature conservation. In this study recent experiences and results from working in a nature conservation area are presented. The chosen study area ’Haarmoos’ is located southwest of the lake Abtsdorf, Bavaria and is declared under the European wide Natura 2000 network. Optical imagery and terrain data were analyzed in an integrated approach based on object-based image analysis (OBIA). The classification delivered good results. Ditches may be classified well by the presented approach whereas a tradeoff was made between local rule set adaption and applicability to further data sets. The validation of the classification results was based on three steps.

    AbstractEfforts to mitigate the nitrogen (N) footprint of maize production include using N‐fixing microbes (NFM) and/or microbial inhibitors. We quantified the effects of NFM, the nitrification inhibitor (NI) 2‐(N‐3,4‐dimethyl‐1H‐pyrazol‐1‐yl) succinic acid isomeric mixture, and the urease inhibitor (UI) N‐(n‐butyl) thiophosphoric triamide, each applied by itself or paired with another additive, on nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, nitrate (NO3−) leaching, and crop performance in contrasting irrigated and rainfed maize systems over two growing seasons. We also used published emission factors to estimate indirect N2O emissions from leached NO3− that can be converted to N2O. Agronomic effects were relatively small; the NI + NFM treatment increased N use efficiency and grain yield and protein content in some cases by 11%–14% relative to a treatment receiving only urea. Most of the additive treatments reduced direct (in‐field) N2O emissions, most consistently for treatments that contained NI which reduced emissions by 24%–77%. However, these beneficial effects were counteracted by increased NO3− leaching, which occurred most consistently with UI or NFM applied as single additives or with NI. In these treatments, NO3− leaching increased during at least one growing season, and at both sites, by factors of 2–7. In three site‐years, increased NO3− leaching with NFM and NI + NFM offset large reductions in direct N2O, such that total direct + indirect N2O emissions were not different from that in the urea only treatment. These unintended effects may have resulted from unfavorable rainfall timing, varying crop N demand, and declining additive effectiveness. Use of these soil additives requires caution and further study.

    Viehwirtschaftliche Nutzung und umweltschonende Bewirtschaftung der Almen stellen eine traditionsreiche Form der Berglandwirtschaft dar. Aufgrund der topographisch bedingten höheren Produktionskosten im Berggebiet und der ökologischen Bedeutung wird die landwirtschaftliche Beweidung und Pflege der Almen und Alpen mit öffentlichen Fördermitteln unterstützt. Innerhalb der zahlreichen Unterstützungsmaßnahmen erweisen sich die Zahlungen im Rahmen der Agrarumweltmaßnahmen und Ausgleichszulagen für benachteiligte Berggebiete als die effektivsten Regelungen für die Fortführung der Almbewirtschaftung. Der Beitrag analysiert die internationalen und regionalen Unterschiede bzw. Gemeinsamkeiten bei Zielsetzung, Vorgehensweise, Definitionen/Vorgaben und finanzieller Ausstattung dieser agrarpolitischen Regelungen für den Erhalt dieser Höhenkulturlandschaft. Da das Beitragssystem nicht alleine die Entwicklung der Almwirtschaft beeinflusst, wird exemplarisch der Zusammenhang zwischen der Entwicklung der Betriebe und dem Tourismusaufkommen sowie regionalökonomischen Bedingungen analysiert. Aus den Ergebnissen und den Erkenntnissen aus Experteninterviews leiten die Autoren Handlungsempfehlungen für eine nachhaltige Politik für Berggebiete ab. Livestock farming and the environmentally friendly management of Alpine pastures represent a traditional form of mountain farming. Grazing and the maintenance of pastures and alps are publically subsidised in recognition of the ecological importance of the activities and because production costs are higher than usual due to the mountainous topography. In the complex of numerous support measures, payments made in the context of agri-environmental measures and compensatory allowances for disadvantaged areas prove to be the most effective arrangements for an ongoing management of Alpine pastures. The paper analyses international and regional differences and similarities in objectives, procedures, definitions/specifications and financial resources of these agricultural policy regulations for the preservation of this mountain landscape. Since the contribution system is not the only influence on the development of alpine farming, the relationship between the development of farms and tourism and regional economic conditions is analysed by way of an example. Based on the results and on findings from expert interviews, the authors deduce recommendations for action for sustainable policies in mountain areas.

    Bu çalışmada, genel tuzluluk toleransını farklı morfolojik ve fizyolojik özelliklerdeki değişiklikler ile ilişkilendirerek patates (Solanum tuberosum L.) bitkilerinin tuzluluk toleransındaki çeşit farklılıklarının araştırılması hedeflenmiştir. Ticari olarak kullanılan on dokuz patates çeşidi kontrollü serada 25-18 (± 2) ° C (gündüz/gece) sıcaklık ,% 70 bağıl nem, tuz uygulanmayan ve 5 dS m-1 NaCl koşulları altında 90 gün süre ile yetiştirilmiştir. Bu amaçla, yumrular toprak: torf: vermikülit (3:1:1) içeren 14L’lik saksılara dikilmiştir. Tuz uygulamalarına, tüm fidelerin çıkışından 1 hafta sonra başlanmıştır. Patates bitkilerinin tuz stresine toleransı, görsel zararlanma skalası, hücre membran zararlanma oranı ve lipit peroksidasyonunun göstergesi olan malondialdehit (MDA) içeriği ile belirlenmiştir. Yaprak oransal su kapsamı (YOSK), turgor kaybı (TK) ve toplam çözünür protein (TÇP) içeriği de incelenmiştir. Ayrıca bitkilerin yaprak dokularının protein profilleri SDS-PAGE ile değerlendirilmiştir. Sonuç olarak, değerlendirilen 19 patates çeşidi içerisinden Bettina, Challenger, Granola, Lady Claire, Musica ve Orchestra çeşitlerinin tuz stresine en duyarlı, Desiree ve Russet Burbank çeşitlerinin ise tuz stresine en toleranslı çeşitler olduğu belirlenmiştir. Veriler, düşük hücre membran zararı ve MDA içeriğinin Desiree ve Russet Burbank çeşitlerini nispeten tuza toleranslı çeşitler yaptığını göstermiştir. Ayrıca, görsel zararlanma skalası ve SDS-PAGE protein profillerinin de patates çeşitlerinin tuz stresine toleransında biyobelirteç olarak kullanılabileceği sonucuna varılmıştır. This investigation was aimed to explore the varietal differences in salinity tolerance of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) plants by linking the overall salinity tolerance with changes in different morphological and physiological characteristics. Nineteen currently used potato cultivars were grown under controlled conditions in greenhouse at 25-18 (±2) °C (day/night), 70% relative humidity under non-saline and 5dS m-1 NaCl conditions for 90 days. For this purpose, tubers were planted in 14L pots, containing soil: peat: vermiculite (3:1:1). Salt treatment was started 1 week after all the seedlings where emerged. Salt stress tolerance of potato plants were determined with visual damage scale, cell membrane injury analysis and malondialdehyde (MDA) content, the indicator of lipid peroxidation. Leaf relative water content (RWC), loss of turgidity (LT) and total soluble protein (TSP) content were also examined. In addition, the protein profiles of leaf tissues of plants were evaluated by SDS-PAGE. In conclusion; among 19 potato cultivars evaluated cvs. Bettina, Challenger, Granola, Lady Claire, Musica and Orchestra were the most susceptible, cvs. Desiree and Russet Burbank were the most tolerant to salt stress. The data indicated that the low cell membrane injury and MDA content made cvs. Desiree and Russet Burbank relatively salt-tolerant cultivars. Besides, it is concluded that, visual damage scale and SDS-PAGE protein profiles also could be used as biomarkers in salt stress tolerance of potato cultivars.

    British intervention in the Malay States began in Perak with the signing of the Pangkor Agreement of 1874 which provided for the appointment of an official Resident whom the British could rely upon for advice. J.W.W. Birch became the first Resident of Perak. Later in the same year, British authority was extended to Selangor and Sungai Ujung, and in 1888 to Pahang. British intervention led to rapid economic growth in the four Malay States, the pace of which was accelerated through Colonial Office support for investments following the formation of the Federation in 1896. However there were conflicts between officials at different levels of the command chain in regards to approval for capital investments in the Malay States. The policies of the administrators differed, as was clearly evident in the agriculture and mining sectors. It is therefore pertinent to understand what led to such contradictions in the decision making process and whether the officials’ backgrounds could have influenced their attitudes towards the administrative, economic and social policies that were enforced in the Malay states. This article will explore such conflicts and analyse their underlying causes, and thereby will help explain how colonial administration and administrators shaped the course of British imperial history.

    This mixed-methods study examines the effects of a tablet-based checklist system on team performance during a dynamic and safety-critical process of trauma resuscitation. We compared team performance from 47 resuscitations that used a paper checklist to that from 47 cases with a digital checklist to determine if digitizing a checklist led to improvements in task completion rates and in how fast the tasks were initiated for 18 most critical assessment and treatment tasks. We also compared if the checklist compliance increased with the digital design. We found that using the digital checklist led to more frequent completions of the initial airway assessment task but fewer completions of ear and lower extremities exams. We did not observe any significant differences in time to task performance, but found increased compliance with the checklist. Although improvements in team performance with the digital checklist were minor, our findings are important because they showed no adverse effects as a result of the digital checklist introduction. We conclude by discussing the takeaways and implications of these results for effective digitization of medical work.

    This paper examines the determinants of farmers' access to agricultural extension services and adoption of technical inputs. It also attempts to identify what works best for Indian agriculture. Based upon all-India unit-level data of 35,200 farming households surveyed by the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) under the 70th round in 2013, it applies the binary logistic regression model. The study underlines that the ‘Access' to agricultural extension services does not guarantee ‘Adoption' of the technologies or better farm practices, as all the variables emerging as significant in case of ‘Access' do not emerge as significant for ‘Adoption'. The study finds the strong influence of personal and household characteristics on both ‘Access' and ‘Adoption'. However, socioeconomic and technology variables such as caste, gender, religion, and usage of ICT are found to be important for ‘Access' but not for the ‘Adoption'. The paper underlines that physical forms of extension services are far more important than the modern ICT driven services in the developing countries like India. It, therefore, recommends significant strengthening of these services with more generous government support.

    The potential of UAV-based data for fine-scaled remote sensing applications has been investigated for several years and is still increasing. The presented study is attached to the field of landform mapping. Mapping and extracting of landforms contributes to different sectors such as agriculture, disaster management and nature conservation. In this study recent experiences and results from working in a nature conservation area are presented. The chosen study area ’Haarmoos’ is located southwest of the lake Abtsdorf, Bavaria and is declared under the European wide Natura 2000 network. Optical imagery and terrain data were analyzed in an integrated approach based on object-based image analysis (OBIA). The classification delivered good results. Ditches may be classified well by the presented approach whereas a tradeoff was made between local rule set adaption and applicability to further data sets. The validation of the classification results was based on three steps.

    AbstractEfforts to mitigate the nitrogen (N) footprint of maize production include using N‐fixing microbes (NFM) and/or microbial inhibitors. We quantified the effects of NFM, the nitrification inhibitor (NI) 2‐(N‐3,4‐dimethyl‐1H‐pyrazol‐1‐yl) succinic acid isomeric mixture, and the urease inhibitor (UI) N‐(n‐butyl) thiophosphoric triamide, each applied by itself or paired with another additive, on nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, nitrate (NO3−) leaching, and crop performance in contrasting irrigated and rainfed maize systems over two growing seasons. We also used published emission factors to estimate indirect N2O emissions from leached NO3− that can be converted to N2O. Agronomic effects were relatively small; the NI + NFM treatment increased N use efficiency and grain yield and protein content in some cases by 11%–14% relative to a treatment receiving only urea. Most of the additive treatments reduced direct (in‐field) N2O emissions, most consistently for treatments that contained NI which reduced emissions by 24%–77%. However, these beneficial effects were counteracted by increased NO3− leaching, which occurred most consistently with UI or NFM applied as single additives or with NI. In these treatments, NO3− leaching increased during at least one growing season, and at both sites, by factors of 2–7. In three site‐years, increased NO3− leaching with NFM and NI + NFM offset large reductions in direct N2O, such that total direct + indirect N2O emissions were not different from that in the urea
