    Abstract Evapotranspiration (ET) is one of the most important fluxes in terrestrial ecosystems that regulate atmosphere–hydrosphere–biosphere interactions. Several studies have suggested that global ET has significantly increased in the past several decades, and that such increase has exhibited big spatial variability, but there are few detailed studies on the spatio-temporal change in ET over China. Here, we developed a high-resolution data-oriented monthly ET product in China between 1982 and 2015 by integrating remote-sensing and the eddy covariance technique observed ET data in a machine learning approach (model tree ensemble, MTE). We showed that the mean annual ET over China is 552 ± 14 mm yr−1, which is comparable to the estimate from a MTE-derived product based on water balance, but is larger than that from both previous MTE-derived global product and process-based land surface models. ET in China significantly increased with a rate of 10.7 mm yr−1 per decade over the past 30 years (p 60 mm yr−1 per decade) occurred in the eastern periphery of Sichuan, southern Taiwan, and central China, which was attributed to the increases in temperature and solar radiation, as well as the enhanced vegetation productivity. About 22% of the area showed a decreasing trend in ET, mainly in parts of southeastern, southwestern, and northeastern China. The regional decrease in ET was likely due to decreasing precipitation and/or vegetation browning. Although our finding of the significant increase in China’s ET at the country scale is supported by five different ET products, there are still less agreement on the change in ET at the regional scale among different ET products.

    International audience; Monitoring the position of animals in the outdoors can provide useful information in ecology and in agriculture. A common method is to use active sensors, such as GPS, to record their positions at constant intervals of time. But using active sensors can rapidly become expensive when several animals have to be monitored at the same time. Another method is to use a passive sensor to monitor the entire flock of animals. In this article, we propose a method to process images taken by a commercial drone in order to automate the tracking of animal activities. We developed a method that automatically detects goats from the images and tracks their activity using a combination of thresholding and supervised classification methods. We tested our method on 571 drone images taken over 11 days and found a sensitivity of 74% for animal detection and 78.3% for activity detection.

    Forest structure and function are subject to risks of growth declines from intensified drought and frequent extreme events related to climate warming. Knowledge of tree growth declines will help anticipate future responses of forests to climate change. In this study, we investigated tree growth declines over the last four centuries in a juniper forest on the eastern Tibetan Plateau. By analyzing the radial growth trajectories of individual trees, we identified two events of intense growth decline, one in 1817–1830 and the other in 1969–1999 over the past four centuries. The intensity of the recent decline was unprecedented in the period under study. Ring-width chronology showed a positive correlation with self-calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Indices and a negative correlation with mean monthly temperatures in May and June. The recent intensified growth decline may have been due to temperature-induced frequent droughts in the study area. Our findings suggest that trees in this juniper forest may face a higher risk of growth decline and even mortality under continued climate warming.

    AbstractEvolution of egg‐laying potentialities and number of eggs of pear psylla Psylla pyri (L.), (Hom., Psyllidae) during winter and spring periods, in the lower Rhône valleyThe egg counting in orchard is an essential element in populations dynamics studies of Psylla pyri (L.). Yet, it partially reflects the actual number of laid eggs, a part of which escape any counting, because of various causes.An attempt to find out this number was made by estimating the egg‐laying potentialities of P. pyri. Female samples were weekly dissected and their mature ovocytes counted.Winter and spring populations show very high egg‐laying potentialities (maximum 2527 eggs), allowing an important and early multiplication of pear psylla (rate about 9), from a very low population number.This study shows the advantage of an early control strategy of the winter‐spring populations of the pest, even if their numbers seem to be low.RésuméLe dénombrement des oeufs de Psylla pyri (L.) sur le terrain est une donnée essentielle de la dynamique des populations de ce ravageur. Toutefois, cette donnée ne constitue qu'une approche de l'effectif des oeufs réellement pondus dont une partie échappe à tout dénombrement en raison de causes diverses.Nous avons tenté d'appréhender cet effectif en estimant le potentiel de ponte de P. pyri par dissection d'un échantillon hebdomadaire de femelles et dénombrement de leurs ovocytes mûrs.Les populations hivernale et printanière ont un potentiel de ponte très élevé (maximum 2527 oeufs) assurant une multiplication précoce importante des psylles (taux de l'ordre de 9) à partir d'un effectif très bas.Cette étude souligne ainsi l'intérêt d'une stratégie de lutte précoce sur les populations hivernales ou printanières de ce ravageur, même si celles‐ci paraissent numériquement peu importantes.ZusammenfassungUntersuchungen über den Zusammenhang zwischen Eiablagekapazität und Anzahl der Psylla pyri‐Eier (L.) (Hom., Psyllidae) wäbrend der Winter‐ und Frühjahrsmonate im Rhône‐TalFür populationsdynamische Untersuchungen bei Psylla pyn in Obstplantagen ist das Auszählen der Eier eine wichtige Grundlage. Es kann jedoch immer nur ein Teil der tatsächlich abgelegten Eier gezählt werden, ein anderer Teil ist aus verschiedenen Gründen nicht erfaßbar.Um diesen durch Auszählen nicht erfaßbaren Teil zu quantifizieren, sollte die Eiablagekapazität von P. pyri untersucht werden. Zu diesem Zweck wurden wöchentlich Weibchen seziert und deren reife Oocyten gezählt.Die Weibchen der Winter‐ und Frühjahrspopulation weisen eine sehr hohe Eiablagekapazität auf (max. 2527 Eier), was dazu führt, daß sich P. pyri ‐ ausgehend von einer sehr niedrigen Populationsdichte ‐ sehr rasch und zeitig vermehren kann.Die vorliegende Untersuchung legt die Vorteile einer zeitigen Bekämpfungsstrategie gegen die Winter‐ und Frühjahrspopulation dar, selbst wenn der Schädling zu diesem Zeitpunkt scheinbar in geringer Dichte vorhanden ist.

    International audience; Mountain regions are particularly susceptible and influenced by the effects of climate change. In the Alps, temperature increased two times faster than in the Northern Hemisphere during the 20th century. As an immediate response in certain tree species, spring phenological phases, such as budburst and flowering, have tended to occur earlier. However, recent studies have shown a slowing down of phenological shifts during the last two decades compared to earlier periods, which might be caused by warmer winters. Indeed, cold temperatures are required to break bud dormancy that occurs in early fall; and dormancy break is a prerequisite for cell elongation to take place in spring when temperature conditions are warm enough.Here we aimed at evaluating the effects of winter warming vs. spring warming on the phenological shift along mountain elevation gradients. We tested the hypothesis that a lack of chilling temperature during winter delayed dormancy release and subsequently spring phenological phases. For this, we used eight years of temperature and phenological records for five tree species (Betula pendula, Fraxinus excelsior, Corylus avellana, Picea abies and Larix decidua) gathered with the citizen science program Phenoclim (www.phenoclim.org) deployed over the French Alps.Our results showed that for similar preseason (i.e. after dormancy break) temperatures, warmer winters significantly delayed budburst and flowering along the elevation gradient (+0.9 to +5.6 days °C−1) except for flowering of Corylus and budburst of Picea. For similar cold winter temperatures, warmer preseasons significantly advanced budburst and flowering along the elevation gradient (−5.3 to −8.4 days °C−1). On average, the effect of winter warming was 2.3 times lower than the effect of spring warming. We also showed that warmer winter temperature conditions have a significantly larger effect at lower elevations.As a consequence, the observed delaying effect of winter warming might be beneficial to trees by reducing the risk of exposure to late spring frost on a short term. This could further lead to partial dormancy break at lower elevations before the end of the 21st century, which, in turn, may alter bud development and flowering and so tree fitness.

    We analyse the flux density variation associated to low frequency (LF) broadcasting transmitters observed by the ICE electric field experiment onboard DEMETER micro-satellite, observed from 01st Jan. to 09th Dec. 2010. We select five stations localised around the Mediterranean and the Black seas: Tipaza (252 kHz, 02°28’E, 36°33’N, Algeria), Roumoules (216 kHz, 06°08’E, 43°47’N, Monte Carlo), Polatli (180 kHz, 32°25’E, 39°45’N, Turkey), Nadour (171 kHz, 02°55’W, 35°02’N, Morocco) and Brasov (153 kHz, 25°36’E,45°40’, Romania). The detection of the LF transmitter signals by DEMETER micro-satellite is found to depend on the radiated power, the emitted frequency, and the orbit paths with regard to the location of the stations. This leads us to characterise the reception condition of the LF signals and to define time intervals where the detection probability is high. We show that LF signal are regularly recorded, each 12 days, when the satellite is above the broadcasting station. The signal intensity levels are principally significant during the solar activity. Hence we find that the solar and the geomagnetic activities are slightly correlated to the maxima of LF signal as recorded by DEMETER. Also we note a drop of the intensity level several days before the occurrence of earthquakes in/around the Mediterranean and Black seas. International audience

    Authors: Jiaojun Zhu; Deliang Lu; Weidong Zhang;

    Forest gaps, openings in the canopy caused by death of one or more trees, have a profound effect on forest regeneration and drive the forest growth cycle. It is therefore necessary to understand the effects of forest gaps on regeneration for modern forest management. In order to provide a quantitative assessment of the effects of forest gaps on regeneration of woody plants, we conducted this review of gap effects on woody plant regeneration on the basis of 527 observations from 42 individual papers, and reported the results of these data in a meta-analysis. Overall, densities of regenerated woody plants were significantly greater (359%) in forest gaps than on the closed-canopy forest floor. The regeneration density in gaps of plantation forests was significantly greater (P < 0.05) than that of natural forest because the regeneration in gaps of plantation forests was improved by both gap effects and experimental measures. Similarly, in comparison to natural gaps, regeneration was better enhanced in artificial gaps. Regeneration density exhibited a significantly positive correlation with gap size, but a negative correlation with gap age because the gap size decreased with increasing gap age. Shade tolerance of woody plants affected regeneration density in gaps and understory. Average regeneration density of shade-tolerant species exhibited a significantly positive response to gaps but densities remained lower in total than those of intermediate and shade-intolerant species. Gap effects on regeneration decreased in response to increasing temperature and precipitation because of the limiting effects of lower temperature and moisture on woody plant regeneration. In summary, forest gaps enhance woody plant regeneration, and the effects of gaps varied by forest type, gap characteristics, environmental factors and plant traits. The results of this meta-analysis are useful for better understanding the effects and roles of gaps on forest regeneration and forest management.

    Authors: Tang Wei; Aaron Nelson; Emmanuel Johnson;

    Cellulose is one of many important polymers in plants. Cellulose is made of repeat units of the monomer glucose. Cellulose is a major industrial biopolymer in the forest products, textile, and chemical industries. It also forms a large portion of the biomass useful in the generation of energy. Moreover, cellulose-based biomass is a renewable energy source that can be used for the generation of ethanol as a fuel. Cellulose is synthesized by a variety of living organisms such as plants and algae. It is the major component of plant cell walls with secondary cell walls having a much higher content of cellulose. The relationship between cellulose and lignin biosynthesis is complicated, but it is confirmed that inhibition of lignin biosynthesis in transgenic trees will increase cellulose biosynthesis and plant growth. Cellulose accumulation may be increased by down-regulating 4-coumarate:coenzyme A ligase (4CL, EC 6.2.1.12) as shown in transgenic aspen. There is no similar reports on down-regulating 4CL in transgenic conifers. Based on our establishedAgrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation system in loblolly pine, we are able to produce antisense 4-CL transgenic loblolly pine which is predicted to have increasing cellulose accumulation. The overall objective of this project is to genetically engineer forest tree species such as loblolly pine with reduced amount of lignin and increased cellulose content. The research strategy includes: (1) isolate the 4-coumarate:coenzyme A ligase gene from loblolly pine seedlings by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Rapid Amplification of cDNA Ends-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RACE-PCR) techniques from the cDNA library; (2) construct binary expression vectors with antisense 4CL coding sequences and introduce antisense constructs of the 4-coumarate:coenzyme A ligase gene cloned from loblolly pine into the loblolly pine to down regulate the 4-coumarate:coenzyme A ligase gene expression; (3) study the effect of the antisense transgene expression on lignin content, cellulose accumulation, and loblolly pine biomass; and (4) select fast growth and high cellulose accumulation transgenic loblolly pine lines for future commercial application.

    Cedar is an emblematic Mediterranean forest tree. Genetic research activities on Mediterranean Cedrus species are progressively developed in relation to conservation, restoration, and exploitation plans of these forest tree species. However, currently available molecular biology tools supporting genetic research in these fields are still scarce and have a limited genetic resolution potential. We developed a new set of 12 nuclear microsatellite markers (nSSRs) on Cedrus atlantica that we combined with four previously developed ones in three multiplexes. We checked their monogenic inheritance in controlled crosses. We used a collection of 131 samples from six populations of C. atlantica to estimate null allele frequencies and probability of identity and to characterize the structure of genetic diversity in the fragmented distribution range of this species. We also tested the transferability of the markers to another set of 36 samples from the other Mediterranean Cedrus species and performed a phylogenetic analysis. The three multiplexes reached a high level of resolution potential that we used to evaluate sampling quality. Null allele frequency estimates showed no specific pattern across populations or across species and did not affect the results of biogeographic and phylogenic analyses. Our results reveal a very clear geographical genetic structure within C. atlantica, and the phylogenic tree matched previous analyses based on other markers. Our results confirm the potential interest of these nSSR multiplexes for genotyping in Cedrus. International audience

    Khaya anthotheca is a hardwood species from Africa and recently introduced to Brazil. This species yields high-quality wood for diverse applications, but little has been done toward an effective propagation method for large-scale production in nurseries. We evaluated the effects of different concentrations of macro and micronutrients (i.e., 100, 50 and 25% of the concentration of a referenced solution) combined with indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) at 0 and 2 g L−1 on the survival rate of mini-stumps and the survival and adventitious rooting of K. anthotheca mini-cuttings. The mini-stumps were grown from a source of seeds imported from Ghana, West Africa. The mini-stumps survived at a high rate (97%). Consistently high shoot yields were obtained from the mini-stumps (average of 1.8 per mini-stump). High survival percentage of mini-cuttings and adventitious rooting were observed when solutions with 100 and 50% of the nutrients concentration were combined with 2 g L−1 IBA. Histological sections analyzed through optical microscopy indicated the tissues from mini-cutting stems were juvenile, which might have stimulated adventitious rooting. These results have important implications for further work aimed at establishing propagation strategies for K. anthotheca, which are of prime importance for assisting breeding programs of this species.
