Shope; John Tenhunen;Detailed data on land use and land cover constitute important information for Earth system models, environmental monitoring and ecosystem services research. Global land cover products are evolving rapidly; however, there is still a lack of information particularly for heterogeneous agricultural landscapes. We censused land use and land cover field by field in the agricultural mosaic catchment Haean in South Korea. We recorded the land cover types with additional information on agricultural practice. In this paper we introduce the data, their collection and the post-processing protocol. Furthermore, because it is important to quantitatively evaluate available land use and land cover products, we compared our data with the MODIS Land Cover Type product (MCD12Q1). During the studied period, a large portion of dry fields was converted to perennial crops. Compared to our data, the forested area was underrepresented and the agricultural area overrepresented in MCD12Q1. In addition, linear landscape elements such as waterbodies were missing in the MODIS product due to its coarse spatial resolution. The data presented here can be useful for earth science and ecosystem services research. The data are available at the public repository Pangaea (doi:110.1594/PANGAEA.823677).

These trees constitute a significant component of the trees outside forests (TOF). Although increasingly recognized as prominent feature of agricultural lands and built-up areas, not much is known, however, about TOF since they are generally absent from forest inventories. New information In the present study, we focus on the coniferous tree species that constitute potential hosts for a forest defoliator, the pine processionary moth Thaumetopoea pityocampa Den. & Schiff. (Lepidoptera, Notodontidae). We carried out an exhaustive inventory of all pines (Pinus spp.), cedars (Cedrus spp.) and Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) in a 22 × 22 km study window located in the open-field region of Beauce in the centre of France. We recorded a total of 3834 individuals or small groups host trees corresponding a density of 7.9 occurrences per 100 ha. We provide the spatial coordinates of the points without differentiation between tree species.

In the 1920s and 1930s, the Danish archaeologist Harald Kai Ingholt (called Harald Ingholt, 1896-1985) excavated in Palmyra, Syria. During his field campaigns of the Southwest necropolis in 1924, 1925, and 1928 he kept diaries-six in total. These have been digitized, translated, and commented on within the framework of the Palmyra Portrait Project, and have been published in print for the first time. Through the documentation of the excavations and Palmyrene material culture in the form of annotations and drawings, these diaries offer unique insight into Ingholt's work on the Palmyrene graves and their sculptural and epigraphic evidence. Ingholt's documentation of ground-plans, inscriptions, and finds are supplemented by his notes on the daily (excavation) life, thus offering pictures of early twentieth century excavation practices and the local environment that can now be explored as an open data resource, since we with this article make them available through figshare.

Although our knowledge of plant species distribution patterns in the African tropics has been improving over the years, it remains limited. Here we present RAINBIO, a unique comprehensive mega-database of georeferenced records for vascular plants in continental tropical Africa. The geographic focus of the database is the region south of the Sahel and north of Southern Africa, and the majority of data originate from tropical forest regions. RAINBIO is a compilation of 13 datasets either publicly available or personal ones. Numerous in depth data quality checks, automatic and manual via several African flora experts, were undertaken for georeferencing, standardization of taxonomic names and identification and merging of duplicated records. The resulting RAINBIO data allows exploration and extraction of distribution data for 25,356 native tropical African vascular plant species, which represents ca. 89% of all known plant species in the area of interest. Yet, to fully understand how phenological patterns can be modified according to changes in temperature regimes, it is of prime importance to rely on high quality historical data. Here, we propose a very valuable dataset including individual monitoring from pupation to adult emergence of 46 479 individuals of pine processionary moth (Thaumetopoea pityocampa) surveyed between 1970 and 1984 in southern France along an altitudinal gradient. As optional prolonged diapause occurs in this species, i.e. some individuals experience one or more years of diapause before emerging, the caterpillars sampled in any given year were monitored during up to 5 years. The goal was to give precise information about phenology in this species to further analyse its temporal patterns of variation.New information: This dataset is unique by its richness and the type of data it contains. Phenology in the pine processionary moth is often monitored by the use of pheromone traps in the field, which does not provide all the necessary information, because it is then not possible to trace back the exact origin of the moth trapped, nor to characterise other steps of the life cycle. Moreover, as it corresponds to historical data dating back to the 70s and the 80s, the dataset provides a historical baseline of trends in the pre-warming period. International audience

Smart communicating objects are offering the digitalization of lives. They create new opportunities within criminal investigations. In recent years, the scientific community sought to develop a common digital framework and methodology adapted to IoT-based infrastructure. However, the difficulty in exploiting the IoT lies in the heterogeneous nature of the devices, the lack of standards and the complex architecture. Although digital forensics are considered and adopted in IoT investigations, this work only focuses on the collection. The identification phase is quite unexplored. It addresses the challenges of locating hidden devices and finding the best evidence to be collected. The matter of facts is the traditional method of digital forensics does not fully fit the IoT environment. Furthermore, the investigator can no longer consider a connected object as a single device, but as an interconnected whole one, anchored in a cross-disciplinary environment. This paper presents the methodology for identifying and classifying connected objects in search of the best evidence to be collected. It offers techniques for detecting and locating the appropriate equipment. Based on frequency mapping and interactions, it transfers the concept of "fingerprinting" into the field of crime scene. It focuses on the technical and data criteria to successfully select the relevant IoT devices. It gives a general classification as well as the limits of such an approach. It shows the collection of digital evidence by focusing on pertinent information from the Internet of Things. International audience

These trees constitute a significant component of the trees outside forests (TOF). Although increasingly recognized as prominent feature of agricultural lands and built-up areas, not much is known, however, about TOF since they are generally absent from forest inventories. New information In the present study, we focus on the coniferous tree species that constitute potential hosts for a forest defoliator, the pine processionary moth Thaumetopoea pityocampa Den. & Schiff. (Lepidoptera, Notodontidae). We carried out an exhaustive inventory of all pines (Pinus spp.), cedars (Cedrus spp.) and Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) in a 22 × 22 km study window located in the open-field region of Beauce in the centre of France. We recorded a total of 3834 individuals or small groups host trees corresponding a density of 7.9 occurrences per 100 ha. We provide the spatial coordinates of the points without differentiation between tree species.

In the 1920s and 1930s, the Danish archaeologist Harald Kai Ingholt (called Harald Ingholt, 1896-1985) excavated in Palmyra, Syria. During his field campaigns of the Southwest necropolis in 1924, 1925, and 1928 he kept diaries-six in total. These have been digitized, translated, and commented on within the framework of the Palmyra Portrait Project, and have been published in print for the first time. Through the documentation of the excavations and Palmyrene material culture in the form of annotations and drawings, these diaries offer unique insight into Ingholt's work on the Palmyrene graves and their sculptural and epigraphic evidence. Ingholt's documentation of ground-plans, inscriptions, and finds are supplemented by his notes on the daily (excavation) life, thus offering pictures of early twentieth century excavation practices and the local environment that can now be explored as an open data resource, since we with this article make them available through figshare.

Although our knowledge of plant species distribution patterns in the African tropics has been improving over the years, it remains limited. Here we present RAINBIO, a unique comprehensive mega-database of georeferenced records for vascular plants in continental tropical Africa. The geographic focus of the database is the region south of the Sahel and north of Southern Africa, and the majority of data originate from tropical forest regions. RAINBIO is a compilation of 13 datasets either publicly available or personal ones. Numerous in depth data quality checks, automatic and manual via several African flora experts, were undertaken for georeferencing, standardization of taxonomic names and identification and merging of duplicated records. The resulting RAINBIO data allows exploration and extraction of distribution data for 25,356 native tropical African vascular plant species, which represents ca. 89% of all known plant species in the area of interest. Yet, to fully understand how phenological patterns can be modified according to changes in temperature regimes, it is of prime importance to rely on high quality historical data. Here, we propose a very valuable dataset including individual monitoring from pupation to adult emergence of 46 479 individuals of pine processionary moth (Thaumetopoea pityocampa) surveyed between 1970 and 1984 in southern France along an altitudinal gradient. As optional prolonged diapause occurs in this species, i.e. some individuals experience one or more years of diapause before emerging, the caterpillars sampled in any given year were monitored during up to 5 years. The goal was to give precise information about phenology in this species to further analyse its temporal patterns of variation.New information: This dataset is unique by its richness and the type of data it contains. Phenology in the pine processionary moth is often monitored by the use of pheromone traps in the field, which does not provide all the necessary information, because it is then not possible to trace back the exact origin of the moth trapped, nor to characterise other steps of the life cycle. Moreover, as it corresponds to historical data dating back to the 70s and the 80s, the dataset provides a historical baseline of trends in the pre-warming period. International audience

Smart communicating objects are offering the digitalization of lives. They create new opportunities within criminal investigations. In recent years, the scientific community sought to develop a common digital framework and methodology adapted to IoT-based infrastructure. However, the difficulty in exploiting the IoT lies in the heterogeneous nature of the devices, the lack of standards and the complex architecture. Although digital forensics are considered and adopted in IoT investigations, this work only focuses on the collection. The identification phase is quite unexplored. It addresses the challenges of locating hidden devices and finding the best evidence to be collected. The matter of facts is the traditional method of digital forensics does not fully fit the IoT environment. Furthermore, the investigator can no longer consider a connected object as a single device, but as an interconnected whole one, anchored in a cross-disciplinary environment. This paper presents the methodology for identifying and classifying connected objects in search of the best evidence to be collected. It offers techniques for detecting and locating the appropriate equipment. Based on frequency mapping and interactions, it transfers the concept of "fingerprinting" into the field of crime scene. It focuses on the technical and data criteria to successfully select the relevant IoT devices. It gives a general classification as well as the limits of such an approach.
