Structural health monitoring system (SHMs) for bridge involves the use of sensor types to continuously monitor bridge responses under the effects of load types. The database of SHMs is used to analyze and diagnose the health of bridges to identify reasonable maintenance strategy. Structural health monitoring technologies today often use a combination of sensors and IoT technology to track structural responses in real time. This paper summarizes the issues of designing, installing the monitoring system, structural diagram of SHMs, analyzing and determining health warning thresholds of three bridges: Thuan Phuoc, Dragon and Tran Thi Ly across the Han River, Da Nang city. The results obtained from this three-bridge monitoring system can be referenced for the design and operation of long span bridge monitoring systems in the future.

Abstract The carbon and land footprint of 26 certified food products – geographical indications and organic products and their conventional references are assessed. This assessment goes beyond existing literature by (1) designing a calculation method fit for the comparison between certified food and conventional production, (2) using the same calculation method and parameters for 52 products – 26 Food Quality Schemes and their reference products – to allow for a meaningful comparison, (3) transparently documenting this calculation method and opening access to the detailed results and the underlying data, and (4) providing the first assessment of the carbon and land footprint of geographical indications. The method used is Life Cycle Assessment, largely relying on the Cool Farm Tool for the impact assessment. The most common indicator of climate impact, the carbon footprint expressed per ton of product, is not significantly different between certified foods and their reference products. The only exception to this pattern are vegetal organic products, whose carbon footprint is 16% lower. This is because the decrease in greenhouse gas emissions from the absence of mineral fertilizers is never fully offset by the associated lower yield. The climate impact of certified food per hectare is however 26% than their reference and their land footprint is logically 24% higher. Technical specifications directly or indirectly inducing a lower use of mineral fertilizers are a key driver of this pattern. So is yield, which depends both on terroir and farming practices. Overall, this assessment reinforces the quality policy of the European Union: promoting certified food is not inconsistent with mitigating climate change.

Large-scale high-resolution satellite observations of plant functional diversity patterns will greatly benefit our ability to study ecosystem functioning. Here, we demonstrate a potentially scalable approach that uses aggregate plant traits estimated from radiative transfer model (RTM) inversion of Sentinel-2 satellite images to calculate community patterns of plant functional diversity. Trait retrieval relied on simulations and Look-up Tables (LUTs) generated by a RTM rather than heavily depending on a priori field data and data-driven statistical learning. This independence from in-situ training data benefits its scalability as relevant field data remains scarce and difficult to acquire. We ran a total of three different inversion algorithms that are representative of commonly applied approaches and we used two different metrics to calculate functional diversity. In tandem with Sentinel-2 image-based estimation of plant traits, we measured Leaf Area Index (LAI), leaf Chlorophyll content (CAB), and Leaf Mass per Area (LMA) in-situ in a (semi-)natural heterogeneous landscape (Montesinho region) located in northern Portugal. Sampling plots were scaled and georeferenced to match the satellite observed pixels and thereby allowed for a direct one-to-one posterior ground truth validation of individual traits and functional diversity. Across approaches, we observe a reasonable correspondence between the satellite-based retrievals and the insitu observations in terms of the relative distribution of individual trait means and plant functional diversity across locations despite the heterogeneity of the landscape and canopies. The functional diversity estimates, based on a combination of canopy and leaf traits, were robust against estimation biases in trait means. Particularly, the convex hull volume estimate of functional diversity showed strong concordance with in-situ observations across all three inversion methods (Spearman's rho: 0.67-0.80). The remotely sensed estimates of functional diversity also related to in-situ taxonomic diversity (Spearman's rho: 0.55-0.63). Our work highlights the potential and challenges of RTM-based functional diversity metrics to study spatial community-level ecological patterns using currently operational and publicly available Sentinel-2 imagery. While further validation and assessment across different ecosystems and larger datasets are needed, the study contributes towards a further maturation of scalable, spatially, and temporally explicit methods for functional diversity assessments from space. Land use/land cover (LULC) change and climate change are thought to be closely related and mutually influential, especially in contexts where land is converted for urban expansion or agriculture. We represent a first attempt to specify the relationship between LULC change and dryness in a region of Vietnam that is profoundly affected by climate change. Using the temperature–vegetation dryness index (TVDI), we specified the relationships and changes underway in Vietnam’s Ba river basin, one of the largest river systems in the South Central Coast. Using Google Earth Engine, we extracted land use data from Landsat images and calculated TVDI values from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data for 2000 to 2019. We found, first, that agricultural area and deforestation rose by 7.2% and 2.4% annually, respectively. These changes were driven by economic development, rising crop prices, illegal logging, wildfires, and emergence of new agricultural areas. Second, areas classified in the driest TVDI intervals (dry and very dry) occupied 57% of the basin in 2019, 70% of which was agricultural lands and 20% other (mainly urban and bare lands). These driest land categories expanded at an average rate of 0.08% to 0.1% per year. Moreover, 90% of areas classified as “very wet” and “wet” were forest. We observed a strong relationship between LULC change and TVDI. Climate change and LULC change thus appear to be propelling the basin’s climate toward increasing dryness, suggesting the need for policies to reduce the agricultural area and expand forests while developing more adaptive and sustainable livelihoods.

Background: In China, cancer deaths account for one-fifth of all deaths and exerts a heavy toll on patients, families, the healthcare system, and society as a whole. This study aims to examine socio-economic and rural-urban differences in treatment, health service utilization and catastrophic health expenditure (CHE) among cancer patients in China, and to investigate the association of different treatment types with health service utilization and CHE. Methods: We analyzed two waves of nationally representative data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study with 17,224 participants in 2011 and 19,569 participants in 2015. The main treatment types evaluated for cancer included Chinese traditional medicine (TCM), western modern medication excluding TCM, both western modern medications and TCM, surgery, and radiation/chemotherapy. CHE is defined as the point at which annual household health payments exceeded 40% of non-food household consumption expenditure. Multivariable regression models were performed to examine the association of cancer treatments with health service utilization and as well as incidence of CHE. Findings: The age-adjusted prevalence of cancer is 1.37% for 2011 and 1.84% for 2015. Approximately half of the cancer patients utilized treatment for their disease, with a higher proportion of urban residents (54%) than rural residents (46%) receiving cancer treatment in 2015. CHE declined by 22% in urban areas (25% in 2011 and 19% in 2015) but increased by 31% in rural areas (25% in 2011 to 33% in 2015). There was a positive association of cancer treatment with outpatient visit (Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR)=2.098, 95% CI =1.453, 3.029), admission to hospital (AOR=1.961, 95% CI=1.346, 2.857), as well as CHE (AOR=1.796, 95% CI=1.231, 2.620). Chemotherapy (AOR: 2.53, 95% CI: 1.55, 4.12) and surgery (surgery: AOR: 2.15, 95% CI: 1.44, 3.20) were each associated with a 2-fold increased risk of CHE. Interpretation: The burden of cancer among Chinese adults is increasing and about one- fourth cancer patients experienced CHE. Yet disparities among urban-rural, and different socio-economic status still exist. The disparity in CHE has actually increased between the rural and urban population. To reduce financial burden of cancer and bridge the socio-economic gaps, meaningful changes to improve health insurance benefit packages are needed to ensure universal, affordable and patient-centered health coverage for the Chinese cancer patients. Funding Statement: None. Declaration of Interests: The authors declare no competing interests. Ethics Approval Statement: The Biomedical Ethics Review Committee of Peking University approved the CHARLS study, and all interviewees were required to provide informed consent. The ethical approval number was IRB00001052–11015.

© 2020 Elsevier LtdThe major hurdles causing difficulties in mechanized transportation are the depletion of fossil fuels and the high cost of alternative plant-based substrates for producing biofuels. To solve these issues, biofuels were emerged as effective alternatives to reduce pollution caused by the emission of greenhouse gases. Among biofuels, biobutanol is gaining attention as a feasible, renewable, cost-effective, alternative fuel. But the usages of conventional agricultural crops as feedstock are sensitive and controversial due to the growing concern over the availability of food worldwide. Microalgae are an excellent resource to overcome these challenges, which grows on both the sea and freshwater. Microalgae reducing their land usage with agriculture, and there is no food and fuel conflict exist. In addition, microalgae utilize inorganic carbon from the atmosphere for growth; hence they can reduce the emission levels as well as produce clean energy. Therefore, microalgae as third-generation feedstock came into practice due to their fast growth rate and higher carbohydrate content. The main focus of the present review is to discuss in detail about the major challenges faced as a feedstock, genetic engineering strategies adopted and future perspectives to improve the production of biobutanol from microalgae.

however, its impact on the network is still widely unknown. IoT devices are prone to cyberattacks because of constrained resources or misconfigurations. It is essential to characterize IoT traffic and identify each device to monitor the IoT network and discriminate among legitimate and anomalous IoT traffic. In this study, we deployed a smart-home testbed comprising several IoT devices to study IoT traffic. We performed extensive measurement experiments using a novel IoT traffic generator tool called IoTTGen. This tool can generate traffic from multiple devices, emulating large-scale scenarios with different devices under different network conditions. We analyzed the IoT traffic properties by computing the entropy value of traffic parameters and visually observing the traffic on behavior shape graphs. We propose a new method for identifying traffic entropy-based devices, computing the entropy values of traffic features. The method relies on machine learning to classify the traffic. The proposed method succeeded in identifying devices with a performance accuracy up to 94% and is robust with unpredictable network behavior with traffic anomalies spreading in the network. We now use the Internet of things (IoT) in our everyday lives. The novel IoT devices collect cyber–physical data and provide information on the environment. Hence, IoT traffic will count for a major part of Internet traffic

Abstract Soil temperature (ST) is an essential catchment property strongly influenced by air temperature (Ta). ST is also the key factor in sustainable agricultural developments, so researchers are still motivated to develop robust machine learning (ML) models to predict ST more reliably. Four different ML models, utilizing the standalone algorithms (i.e., artificial neural networks: ‘ANN’ and co-active neuro-fuzzy inference systems: ‘CANFIS’) and complementary algorithms (i.e., wavelet transformation combined with ANN: ‘WANN’ and wavelet transformation combined with CANFIS: ‘WCANFIS’) were developed to predict the ST at six meteorological stations incorporating a wide range of climatic features to improve the overall performance. The study has utilized data over the period 2000–2010, collected at 12 locations in Iran. In the first phase of this research, the effects of climate variability on the changes in ST at different depths (i.e., 5, 10, 20, 30, 50 and 100 cm) were explored using air temperature as the exploratory and ST as the response variable. Assessing the performance of the predictive models used in ST prediction, the results indicated good predictive capability of the WCANFIS model, thus, advocating its potential utility in ST prediction problems, especially over diverse climatic regions. This study has also ascertained that the minimum and the maximum predictive errors were encountered at a depth of about 20 cm and 100 cm, respectively. The assessment of climatic features based on air temperature datasets on the performance of the models indicated the highest efficacy demonstrated by the ANN model for the case A–C–W climate type (i.e., a moist climate regime: Arid, temperature regime in winter: Cool, and temperature regime in summer: Warm), in comparison with the PH–C–W climate type (moist regime: Per-humid) for the other best ML models (i.e., WANN, WCANFIS and CANFIS). The order of the model accuracies based on the root mean square error (RMSE) can be ranked with error values of as: WCANFIS = 0.43 °C, ANN = 0.69 °C, CANFIS = 2.16 °C and WANN = 2.31 °C, demonstrating the wavelet-based CANFIS model to exceed the performance of the counterpart comparative models. The present study provides evidence of successfully developing new ML models, improved through wavelet transform for effective feature extraction, and the importance of such hybrid models that have practical implications in studying soil temperature based on air temperature feature inputs in diverse climatic conditions. The outcomes of this study are expected to support key decisions in sustainable agriculture and other related areas where soil health, based on air temperature changes, needs to be monitored or predicted.

The Vietnam’s agricultural sector had to challenge with its course and learned lessons of further development. Novel policy might be adopted to encourage the private investments and sectors in agriculture. Furthermore, an introduction of new models such as climate-smart or green agriculture and application of modern technology increased productivity at the same time and creating jobs for millions of agricultural workers and reversing the massive rural-urban migration flux. Vietnam’s agricultural sector needs to maintain the reform momentum, particularly liberalization policy, and to boost up agricultural potential. Obstacles such as land limitation policy must be removed to enable large-scale production and encourage private investment in the agricultural sector. To avoid being trapped by its own success, Vietnam is now shifting the old development paradigm that focuses too much on the quantity to the quality of the agricultural production. The government makes major efforts to achieve at the same time agricultural growth, better livelihood of the farmer, and the development of the rural areas. However, Vietnam still needs to prepare a “transition strategy” to overcome the impact of the technological progress on the traditional agricultural workers.

Abstract Rapid intensification of Vietnamese rice production has had a positive effect on the nation's food production and economy. However, the sustainability of intensive rice production is increasingly being questioned within Vietnam, particularly in major agricultural provinces such as An Giang. The construction of high dykes within this province, which allow for complete regulation of water onto rice fields, has enabled farmers to grow up to three rice crops per year. However, the profitability of producing three crops is rapidly decreasing as farmers increase their use of chemical fertilizer inputs and pesticides. Increased fertilizer inputs are partly used to replace natural flood-borne, nutrient-rich sediment inputs that have been inhibited by the dykes, but farmers believe that despite this, soil health within the dyke system is degrading. However, the effects of the dykes on soil properties have not been tested. Therefore, a sampling campaign was conducted to assess differences in soil properties caused by the construction of dykes. The results show that, under present fertilization practices, although dykes may inhibit flood-borne sediments, this does not lead to a systematic reduction in nutrients that typically limit rice growth within areas producing three crops per year. Concentrations of total nitrogen, available phosphorous, and both total and available potassium, and pH were higher in the surface layer of soils of three crop areas when compared to two crop areas. This suggests that yield declines may be caused by other factors related to the construction of dykes and the use of chemical inputs, and that care should be taken when attempting to maintain crop yields. Attempting to compensate for yield declines by increasing fertilizer inputs may ultimately have negative effects on yields.
