Hancke; Anish M. Kurien; Karim Djouani;The novel coronavirus (COVID-19), declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a global pandemic, has brought with it changes to the general way of life. Major sectors of the world industry and economy have been affected and the Internet of Things (IoT) management and framework is no exception in this regard. This article provides an up to date survey on how a global pandemic such as COVID-19 has affected the world of IoT technologies. It looks at the contributions that IoT and associated sensor technologies have made towards virus tracing, tracking and spread mitigation. The associated challenges of deployment of sensor hardware in the face of a rapidly spreading pandemic have been looked into as part of this review article. The effects of a global pandemic on the evolution of IoT architectures and management have also been addressed, leading to the likely outcomes on future IoT implementations. In general, this article provides an insight into the advancement of sensor-based E-health towards the management of global pandemics. It also answers the question of how a global virus pandemic has shaped the future of IoT networks.

Nowadays, there is a growing interest in extending the service life of wood and wood products by applying natural substances that are harmless to humans and the environment. In this paper, propolis was used as an eco-friendly wood preservative. The aim of this study was to determine the resistance of Scots pine wood treated with the propolis extract against brown-rot fungus Coniophora puteana. The wood biodegradation was assessed by gravimetric method, as well as by the analysis of ergosterol concentration in decayed wood and by the determination of changes in the wood structure by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results indicated that the impregnation of wood with propolis extract above 12% concentration limited fungal decay. The mass loss of wood treated with 18.9% propolis extract was 2.3% and was over 21 times lower than that for untreated wood. The analysis of ergosterol content and the changes in wood structure also confirmed that the propolis extract above 12% concentration protected wood against decay caused by C. puteana. Moreover, the propolis extract used in wood impregnation was rich in phenolic compounds, mainly chrysin, pinocembrin and galangin, which possess antimicrobial activity. The obtained results indicate that the extract of Polish propolis can be a promising natural wood preservative, safe for humans and the natural environment.

Background Health-related behaviours and lifestyle are related to the salutogenic concept of health, whereas the major public health problems faced in rural areas include difficulties in encouraging people to a healthy lifestyle. Objective The aim of the study is to explore mutual relationships between psychosocial-demographic factors and a sense of coherence. Material and Methods Two-stage sampling was applied. Data were collected with the use of the Juczynski Health Behaviours Inventory and Antonovsky’s SOC-29 (Sense of Coherence Questionnaire). The study was conducted among 668 adults. Data were statistically prepared using one-way ANOVA test, linear correlation analysis, and linear regression model. Results A higher level of pro-health behaviours is associated with gender, self-rated health, sense of coherence and age. Almost half of the farmers were characterized by a low level of pro-health attitudes. A higher level of pro-health behaviours was demonstrated by less than one-fifth of the farmers. Conclusions There is a strong association between sense of coherence and pro-health behaviours. Farmers have bad habits and pro-health attitudes to health and poorer self-assessment of their health. There is a great need to monitor health-related behaviour, increase the effectiveness of health promotion and health education in shaping a pro-health lifestyle among residents of rural areas, particularly among farmers.

Development of mechanization in forest management activities allows to considerably decrease manpower needs. In the present study, there were analyzed the possibilities of reduction of work consumption by improving the mechanization level of forest works. The method was developed to consider the following assessments: 1) variant W1 - basic option comprising factual work consumption values in works carried out on the area administered by the Regional Directorate of State Forests (RDLP); 2) W2 - showing the effect of 25% upgrade of works to a higher level of mechanization; 3) W3 - showing the effect of 50% upgrade of works to a higher level of mechanization; 4) W4 - comprising analogous calculations to those in variant W1 , but work consumption upgrading was 75%. Simulation calculations revealed considerable differences in needs for labor of different categories of forest workers. On the other hand, with increasing mechanization level, there increase the demands concerning worker qualifications, e.g. a harvester operator must be trained for about 2 years, and the training has to include both simulator exercises (first using software and next - harvester simulator) and field work under supervision to gain sufficient experience. The introduction of higher levels of mechanization into forest operations, and hence considerable reduction of jobs for unqualified workers who are replaced by qualified employees, can help decreasing work consumption in forest operations.

The applied methodology included office and field methods. Office methods related to the analysis of source material - literature, maps, yearbooks and Internet resources. The field study consisted in carrying out observations and interviewing selected owners of the centers offering services in horse tourism. The conducted analyses showed that both Podkarpackie Province and the Presov Province have great potential for the development of equestrian tourism which advantages have not been fully exploited, particularly in Slovakia. These limitations are due to confusing legislature, the lack of cooperation between the various entities and poor promotion of this activity.

The article deals with the popularity of the TV program Far from the city, which introduces townspeople who decided to move to the countryside. The host of the program visits people who have decided to change their lives and pursue their professional lives away from the city in various ways. Thanks to their original ideas for life, inhabited farms gained a new splendor. The program proves that the Polish countryside should no longer be defined solely by its agrarian nature and agriculture, as well as that the countryside is nowadays a good direction of migration. Artykuł traktuje o popularności programu telewizyjnego Daleko od miasta, w którym przedstawia się „mieszczuchów”, którzy zdecydowali się przeprowadzić na wieś. Gospodyni programu odwiedza ludzi, którzy postanowili zmienić swoje życie i na rozmaite sposoby realizują się zawodowo z dala od miasta. Za sprawą ich niebanalnych pomysłów na życie zamieszkane gospodarstwa zyskały nowego blasku. Program dowodzi, że polskiej wsi nie powinniśmy już definiować jedynie poprzez jej agrarność i rolniczość, jak również, że wieś jest współcześnie dobrym kierunkiem migracji.

The idea proposed by the authors is to use sky images as an actuator for controlling automated shading devices. The fundamental problem of these studies is the dynamic of changes in lighting conditions in different areas of sky. Three different models of the sky were selected. Louvers with semi-open and closed slat position were examined. Seven different scenarios, taking into account the type of radiation and window sky visual range, were built and analyzed to draw general principles for the described control method. A system was used to describe louver position in the partly cloudy model of the sky for an office building. Method has proved to be effective for blind control, but require further improvements.

Abstract: The development of new diagnostics techniques and modalities is critical for early detection of microbial contamination. In this study, the novel integrated system for multi-parametric optical phenotyping and characterization of bacterial colonies, is presented. The system combines Mach-Zehnder interferometer with a spectral imaging system for capturing multispectral diffraction patterns and multispectral two-dimensional transmission maps of bacterial colonies, along with the simultaneous interferometric profilometry. The herein presented investigation was carried out on five representative bacteria species and nearly 3000 registered multispectral optical signatures. The interferograms were analyzed by four-step phase shift algorithm to reconstruct the colony profile to enable the obtaining of the comparable optical signatures. The dedicated image processing algorithms were used for extraction of quantitative features of these signatures. The random forest algorithm was applied for selection of the most predictive set of features, which were used in classification model based on Support-Vector Machine. Obtained results have shown that the use of multiple multispectral optical signatures provide a multi-parametric bacteria identification at an exceptionally high accuracy (99.4–100%), significantly better than in case of classification based on each of these signatures (multispectral diffraction patterns, two-dimensional transmission coefficient maps), separately. Obtained results revealed that analysis of multispectral signatures can also be applied for characterisation of physical, physicochemical and chemical properties of the bacterial colonies in the presence of the antimicrobial factors. Therefore, the proposed label-free, non-destructive optical technique has perspectives to be exploited in the multipurpose diagnostics and it can be used as a pre-screening tool in microbiological laboratories.

Although Aspergillus spp infection is not the major cause of morbidity in Intensive Care Units (ICUs), mortality among patients treated for it is tremendous. Moreover, invasive aspergillosis (IA) is an independent risk factor of hospital costs and length of stay. The prevalence of this disease is inversely correlated with the immunocompetence of individuals; for instance, the incidence of IA among patients with leukemia is estimated as high as 12.7%. Although there is a significant improvement in the antifungal armamentarium, the appropriate treatment is still being given too late, mostly because of late diagnosis. As well as the diagnosis, the criteria for recognition of IA constitute a challenge. Objective The aim of this review, based on a case report, is to introduce the problem of poor diagnosis and treatment of IA, especially in the critical care settings. The presented scenario is an example which assists in showing the evidence-based medicine (EBM) approach to the treatment of fungal infections. Furthermore, to demonstrate the appropriate approach to diagnosis and treatment of invasive aspergillosis, the guidelines of The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer/Mycoses Study Group (EORTC/MSG) are presented. Conclusions According to presented literature, Galactomannan assay enables early diagnosis and remains a specific and sensitive tool to diagnose Asppergillosis , both in serum and BAL fluid. The guidelines recommend voriconazole as a first line treatment in IA. Failure to detect and implement proper antifungal treatment may lead to fatal consequences, as in the presented case.

Hancke; Anish M. Kurien; Karim Djouani;The novel coronavirus (COVID-19), declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a global pandemic, has brought with it changes to the general way of life. Major sectors of the world industry and economy have been affected and the Internet of Things (IoT) management and framework is no exception in this regard. This article provides an up to date survey on how a global pandemic such as COVID-19 has affected the world of IoT technologies. It looks at the contributions that IoT and associated sensor technologies have made towards virus tracing, tracking and spread mitigation. The associated challenges of deployment of sensor hardware in the face of a rapidly spreading pandemic have been looked into as part of this review article. The effects of a global pandemic on the evolution of IoT architectures and management have also been addressed, leading to the likely outcomes on future IoT implementations. In general, this article provides an insight into the advancement of sensor-based E-health towards the management of global pandemics. It also answers the question of how a global virus pandemic has shaped the future of IoT networks.

Nowadays, there is a growing interest in extending the service life of wood and wood products by applying natural substances that are harmless to humans and the environment. In this paper, propolis was used as an eco-friendly wood preservative. The aim of this study was to determine the resistance of Scots pine wood treated with the propolis extract against brown-rot fungus Coniophora puteana. The wood biodegradation was assessed by gravimetric method, as well as by the analysis of ergosterol concentration in decayed wood and by the determination of changes in the wood structure by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results indicated that the impregnation of wood with propolis extract above 12% concentration limited fungal decay. The mass loss of wood treated with 18.9% propolis extract was 2.3% and was over 21 times lower than that for untreated wood. The analysis of ergosterol content and the changes in wood structure also confirmed that the propolis extract above 12% concentration protected wood against decay caused by C. puteana. Moreover, the propolis extract used in wood impregnation was rich in phenolic compounds, mainly chrysin, pinocembrin and galangin, which possess antimicrobial activity. The obtained results indicate that the extract of Polish propolis can be a promising natural wood preservative, safe for humans and the natural environment.

Background Health-related behaviours and lifestyle are related to the salutogenic concept of health, whereas the major public health problems faced in rural areas include difficulties in encouraging people to a healthy lifestyle. Objective The aim of the study is to explore mutual relationships between psychosocial-demographic factors and a sense of coherence. Material and Methods Two-stage sampling was applied. Data were collected with the use of the Juczynski Health Behaviours Inventory and Antonovsky’s SOC-29 (Sense of Coherence Questionnaire). The study was conducted among 668 adults. Data were statistically prepared using one-way ANOVA test, linear correlation analysis, and linear regression model. Results A higher level of pro-health behaviours is associated with gender, self-rated health, sense of coherence and age. Almost half of the farmers were characterized by a low level of pro-health attitudes. A higher level of pro-health behaviours was demonstrated by less than one-fifth of the farmers. Conclusions There is a strong association between sense of coherence and pro-health behaviours. Farmers have bad habits and pro-health attitudes to health and poorer self-assessment of their health. There is a great need to monitor health-related behaviour, increase the effectiveness of health promotion and health education in shaping a pro-health lifestyle among residents of rural areas, particularly among farmers.

Development of mechanization in forest management activities allows to considerably decrease manpower needs. In the present study, there were analyzed the possibilities of reduction of work consumption by improving the mechanization level of forest works. The method was developed to consider the following assessments: 1) variant W1 - basic option comprising factual work consumption values in works carried out on the area administered by the Regional Directorate of State Forests (RDLP); 2) W2 - showing the effect of 25% upgrade of works to a higher level of mechanization; 3) W3 - showing the effect of 50% upgrade of works to a higher level of mechanization; 4) W4 - comprising analogous calculations to those in variant W1 , but work consumption upgrading was 75%. Simulation calculations revealed considerable differences in needs for labor of different categories of forest workers. On the other hand, with increasing mechanization level, there increase the demands concerning worker qualifications, e.g. a harvester operator must be trained for about 2 years, and the training has to include both simulator exercises (first using software and next - harvester simulator) and field work under supervision to gain sufficient experience. The introduction of higher levels of mechanization into forest operations, and hence considerable reduction of jobs for unqualified workers who are replaced by qualified employees, can help decreasing work consumption in forest operations.

The applied methodology included office and field methods. Office methods related to the analysis of source material - literature, maps, yearbooks and Internet resources. The field study consisted in carrying out observations and interviewing selected owners of the centers offering services in horse tourism. The conducted analyses showed that both Podkarpackie Province and the Presov Province have great potential for the development of equestrian tourism which advantages have not been fully exploited, particularly in Slovakia. These limitations are due to confusing legislature, the lack of cooperation between the various entities and poor promotion of this activity.

The article deals with the popularity of the TV program Far from the city, which introduces townspeople who decided to move to the countryside. The host of the program visits people who have decided to change their lives and pursue their professional lives away from the city in various ways. Thanks to their original ideas for life, inhabited farms gained a new splendor. The program proves that the Polish countryside should no longer be defined solely by its agrarian nature and agriculture, as well as that the countryside is nowadays a good direction of migration. Artykuł traktuje o popularności programu telewizyjnego Daleko od miasta, w którym przedstawia się „mieszczuchów”, którzy zdecydowali się przeprowadzić na wieś. Gospodyni programu odwiedza ludzi, którzy postanowili zmienić swoje życie i na rozmaite sposoby realizują się zawodowo z dala od miasta. Za sprawą ich niebanalnych pomysłów na życie zamieszkane gospodarstwa zyskały nowego blasku. Program dowodzi, że polskiej wsi nie powinniśmy już definiować jedynie poprzez jej agrarność i rolniczość, jak również, że wieś jest współcześnie dobrym kierunkiem migracji.

The idea proposed by the authors is to use sky images as an actuator for controlling automated shading devices. The fundamental problem of these studies is the dynamic of changes in lighting conditions in different areas of sky. Three different models of the sky were selected. Louvers with semi-open and closed slat position were examined. Seven different scenarios, taking into account the type of radiation and window sky visual range, were built and analyzed to draw general principles for the described control method. A system was used to describe louver position in the partly cloudy model of the sky for an office building. Method has proved to be effective for blind control, but require further improvements.

Abstract: The development of new diagnostics techniques and modalities is critical for early detection of microbial contamination. In this study, the novel integrated system for multi-parametric optical phenotyping and characterization of bacterial colonies, is presented. The system combines Mach-Zehnder interferometer with a spectral imaging system for capturing multispectral diffraction patterns and multispectral two-dimensional transmission maps of bacterial colonies, along with the simultaneous interferometric profilometry. The herein presented investigation was carried out on five representative bacteria species and nearly 3000 registered multispectral optical signatures. The interferograms were analyzed by four-step phase shift algorithm to reconstruct the colony profile to enable the obtaining of the comparable optical signatures. The dedicated image processing algorithms were used for extraction of quantitative features of these signatures. The random forest algorithm was applied for selection of the most predictive set of features, which were used in classification model based on Support-Vector Machine. Obtained results have shown that the use of multiple multispectral optical signatures provide a multi-parametric bacteria identification at an exceptionally high accuracy (99.4–100%), significantly better than in case of classification based on each of these signatures (multispectral diffraction patterns, two-dimensional transmission coefficient maps), separately. Obtained results revealed that analysis of multispectral signatures can also be applied for characterisation of physical, physicochemical and chemical properties of the bacterial colonies in the presence of the antimicrobial factors. Therefore, the proposed label-free, non-destructive optical technique has perspectives to be exploited in the multipurpose diagnostics and it can be used as a pre-screening tool in microbiological laboratories.

Although Aspergillus spp infection is not the major cause of morbidity in Intensive Care Units (ICUs), mortality among patients treated for it is tremendous. Moreover, invasive aspergillosis (IA) is an independent risk factor of hospital costs and length of stay. The prevalence of this disease is inversely correlated with the immunocompetence of individuals; for instance, the incidence of IA among patients with leukemia is estimated as high as 12.7%. Although there is a significant improvement in the antifungal armamentarium, the appropriate treatment is still being given too late, mostly because of late diagnosis. As well as the diagnosis, the criteria for recognition of IA constitute a challenge. Objective The aim of this review, based on a case report, is to introduce the problem of poor diagnosis and treatment of IA, especially in the critical care settings. The presented scenario is an example which assists in showing the evidence-based medicine (EBM) approach to the treatment of fungal infections. Furthermore, to demonstrate the appropriate approach to diagnosis and treatment of invasive aspergillosis, the guidelines of The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer/Mycoses Study Group (EORTC/MSG) are presented. Conclusions According to presented literature, Galactomannan assay enables early diagnosis and remains a specific and sensitive tool to diagnose Asppergillosis , both in serum and BAL fluid. The guidelines recommend voriconazole as a first line treatment in IA. Failure to detect and implement proper antifungal treatment may lead to fatal consequences, as in the presented case.
