Livestock farming and the environmentally friendly management of Alpine pastures represent a traditional form of mountain farming. Grazing and the maintenance of pastures and alps are publically subsidised in recognition of the ecological importance of the activities and because production costs are higher than usual due to the mountainous topography. In the complex of numerous support measures, payments made in the context of agri-environmental measures and compensatory allowances for disadvantaged areas prove to be the most effective arrangements for an ongoing management of Alpine pastures. The paper analyses international and regional differences and similarities in objectives, procedures, definitions/specifications and financial resources of these agricultural policy regulations for the preservation of this mountain landscape. Since the contribution system is not the only influence on the development of alpine farming, the relationship between the development of farms and tourism and regional economic conditions is analysed by way of an example. Based on the results and on findings from expert interviews, the authors deduce recommendations for action for sustainable policies in mountain areas.

    Agricultural innovations are meant to master global challenges such as climate change. However, they are often subject to highly controversial societal debates, such as in the case of genetic engineering or certain forms of animal production. This paper provides insight in the extent to which these conflicts are rooted in the conditions and processes of agricultural innovation. We analyze the German agricultural innovation system from an adapted systems perspective and present three case studies. These case studies potentially contribute to solving current challenges and are influenced in their development process by different factors: different technologies, actors, links to other branches, overlapping frame conditions and current challenges as well as societal debates. The innovation system concept applied to different system levels provides insight into interrelationships and hence allows us to identify starting points for improvement. The explanation and potential solution in mastering the high expectations on agricultural innovation and societal debates the authors point to two aspects: 1) As it is in many other areas trust is an important basis for innovative collaboration in small networks. (2) At the same time innovation success depends on the incorporation of societal trends in innovation processes, e. g. via a greater involvement of consumers and retailers at an early stage. Overall, besides the balancing of continuity and openness of agricultural innovation networks, our results raise questions for the (self-)concept and design of the agricultural innovation system, for incentives and shaping of interdisciplinary collaboration as well as for the (self-)role model of the involved actors.

    This paper considers the impact of agriculture and international trade development on income distribution and economic activity in Mozambique. A social accounting matrix multiplier decomposition model is used - in particular, an extension of the standard model that details the process of income distribution through the economy's institutions. When we focus on the impact on rural low-income households, the emphasis is on the food crop and food-processing sectors. The results suggest surprisingly that such households do not benefit much from exogenous increases in agricultural crops; high-income rural and urban households benefit more. A full decomposition of the multipliers suggests that rural low-income households link strongly to food-processing, but that the latter is not very prominent in the Mozambican economy due to high import penetration. The second focus is therefore on international trade, which reveals that the high rates of imports regarding food-processing are mainly sourced from South Africa.

    Today, Industry 4.0 technologies, such as Big Data analytics and mobile technologies, are forcing firms to seek new ways to create and deliver customer value. We argue that the Android project, one of the most successful open-source digital platforms, reflects a new business model in the age of digital transformation. In the Android community, application developers create and sell applications for the Android operating system provided by the open-source firm (Google), and share the profit with Google. Such an open-source strategy forces the open-source firm to give up the profits from selling the operating system to customers. A firm generally chooses an open-source strategy to increase its user network size. Using the concept of creative intensity, or the speed of idea generation, we offer a new explanation regarding the benefits of an open-source strategy in the age of digital transformation. We investigate how to enhance creative intensity and profit on the open-source digital platform. Our model suggests that an open-source strategy effectively manages the diminishing value of ideas and, thus, facilitates the dynamic capability of an open-source firm.

    Estimated Ricardian models have been criticized because they rely on mean temperatures and do not explicitly include extreme temperatures. This paper uses a cross sectional approach to compare a standard quadratic Ricardian model of mean temperature with a fully flexible daily temperature bin model of farmland values in the Eastern United States. The flexible bin model leads to smaller damages from warming than the quadratic mean specification, but the difference is not statistically significant. Although weather panel studies find high temperature events lead to large annual damage, high temperature events have no harmful effect on farmland values. The results are robust to alternative model specifications and data sets.

    The role of digital transformation in creating value for commercial banks has been interesting to researchers for a long time. While many commercial banks have significantly investigated digital transformation, researchers and managers have still met many difficulties examining the distribution of digital transformation to business performance. This paper aims to evaluate the impact of digital transformation on Vietnamese commercial banks’ performance by different sizes, from there proposing policy implications of digital transformation to improve the banking performance. To achieve this goal, we used a quantitative research method. Specifically, we applied the GMM system (SGMM) of Blundell and Bond for the data of 13 joint-stock commercial banks in Vietnam in the period from 2011 to 2019. Then Bayesian analysis is performed to test the robustness of the models estimated by the SGMM method. The result shows that the digital transformation has a positive impact on the performance of Vietnamese commercial banks. Besides, we also find that the larger the banks, the greater the positive impact of digital transformation on bank performance. Therefore, the efficiency of digital transformation depends on a bank scale.

    Authors: Joanna Małgorzata Landmesser;

    Abstract The paper deals with microeconometric techniques useful for the study of differences between groups of objects, methods that go beyond simple comparison of average values. Techniques for the decomposition of differences in distributions by constructing counterfactual distributions were considered. Using the Machado-Mata quantile regression approach the empirical decomposition of the inequalities in income distributions of one-person households in urban and rural areas was performed. We employed data from the Household Budget Survey for Poland in 2012. It was found that the tendency towards increased income inequalities between urban and rural residents when moving to the right of the income distribution can be observed. The rural residents are at a disadvantage. The decomposition of the inequalities revealed a growing share of the part explained by different characteristics of people and a declining share of the unexplained part, associated with the evaluation of those characteristics.

    as there is no such operating market in China. To bridge the research gap, we first conducted a questionnaire-based survey on rural households and urban residents with a random sampling method in six cities in Sichuan Province, China. A total of 571 valid samples, including 284 rural households and 287 urban residents, were obtained. Based on these survey data, we then used logistic regression to estimate the influencing factors on the willingness of house owners and urban residents in renting in/out or selling/buying vacant farmhouses. The results showed that: (1) more than 60% of rural house owners and urban residents are willing to participate in a potential VFM Massive and rapid urbanization has led to population loss in rural areas, particularly in emerging and developing countries like China. As a result, houses in rural areas become vacant, and the house prices in cities, at the same time, skyrocket. While the research on the vacant farmhouses market (VFM) is a pressing issue for sustainable urbanization and has profound policy implications in China, few empirical studies have been conducted on analyzing the willingness of house owners and urban residents to participate in the VFM and any influencing factors&mdash willingness to rent out or sell their houses include the sociodemographic characteristics of farmers (e.g., age, household income) and characteristics of the vacant houses (e.g., distance to the main roads, the status of vacant houses), while the major factors that affect the willingness of urban residents to rent in or purchase vacant rural houses are the sociodemographic characteristics of urban residents themselves (e.g., occupation), the status of the potential houses, and the perceived housing market urban residents pay more attention to the good natural environment in rural areas and the infrastructure and public service levels of vacant farmhouses in rural areas. This study thus showed the necessity, feasibility, and potential challenges and barriers involved in establishing a VFM in China. (3) most farmers want a regulated platform for the vacant farmhouses (2) the main influencing factors of house owners&rsquo

    "In diesem Beitrag werden exemplarisch Fragen aufgeworfen zu einem in der sozialpolitischen Diskussion relativ wenig beachteten Themenfeld, nämlich sozialpolitisch relevanten Faktoren für die Situation im Alter vor allem in dünn besiedelten und strukturschwachen ländlichen Regionen. Der Blick wird dabei insbesondere auf soziale Sicherung im Krankheits- und Pflegefall gerichtet. Zunächst wird als Analyserahmen ein weitgespannter Ressourcenansatz skizziert, der - über das hier erörterte Thema hinaus - Ansatzpunkte für eine disziplinenübergreifende Erörterung von Lebensbedingungen im Alter liefern kann. Sodann wird auf einige spezifisch die ländlichen Räume betreffende sozialpolitische Rahmenbedingungen hingewiesen, zu denen nicht nur typisch sozialpolitische Politikfelder gehören, sondern beispielsweise auch Regional-, Verkehrs- und vor allem Agrarpolitik. Anschließend werden einige allgemeine Fragen der Ausrichtung von Sozialpolitik aufgeworfen, und zwar im Hinblick auf die konzeptionelle Ausrichtung von Kranken- und Pflegeversicherung und mögliche Entwicklungstendenzen für die Einkommenslage in der Altersphase." (Autorenreferat) "This paper deals with questions referring to a topic that gets relatively small attention in discussions on social security, namely factors relevant for the living conditions in old age especially in thinly populated and structurally weak rural regions. In particular, social security in the case of illness and need of care is discussed. First, as an analytical frame, a broad concept of ressources is outlined, which may give starting-points for an interdisciplinary discussion of living conditions in old age. Thereafter, some sociopolitical conditions referring specifically to rural regions are mentioned, which not only include aspects usually labelled as social policy, but e.g. also regional, traffic and agricultural policy. In the following, some general questions of social policy are raised with regard to the conceptions of health and long-term care insurance and some possible developments for the income in old-age." Credit is highly demanded in different parts of the world, mainly for capital requirement to improve land, purchase of main agricultural inputs including fertilizers, seeds, pesticides, and purchase of farm machinery. The purpose of this study was to examine the farmers' access to credit: does collateral matter or cash flow matter?-evidence from Sindh province of Pakistan. The random sampling technique was used to collected data from 300 rural households through a face-to-face interview. To find the important factors affecting access to credit in Sindh province of Pakistan, we performed descriptive statistics and probit regression model. The results of probit regression model showed that gender, household size, educational level, farming experience, farm size, income, and availability of collateral have positive effect on farmers' access to credit, while age has a negative and statistically insignificant effect on the farmers' access to credit. Therefore, this study recommended that institutional sources of credit (such as the ZTBL and other Commercial Banks) should improve their loaning schemes to better suit the diversified needs of small farmers.

    Viehwirtschaftliche Nutzung und umweltschonende Bewirtschaftung der Almen stellen eine traditionsreiche Form der Berglandwirtschaft dar. Aufgrund der topographisch bedingten höheren Produktionskosten im Berggebiet und der ökologischen Bedeutung wird die landwirtschaftliche Beweidung und Pflege der Almen und Alpen mit öffentlichen Fördermitteln unterstützt. Innerhalb der zahlreichen Unterstützungsmaßnahmen erweisen sich die Zahlungen im Rahmen der Agrarumweltmaßnahmen und Ausgleichszulagen für benachteiligte Berggebiete als die effektivsten Regelungen für die Fortführung der Almbewirtschaftung. Der Beitrag analysiert die internationalen und regionalen Unterschiede bzw. Gemeinsamkeiten bei Zielsetzung, Vorgehensweise, Definitionen/Vorgaben und finanzieller Ausstattung dieser agrarpolitischen Regelungen für den Erhalt dieser Höhenkulturlandschaft. Da das Beitragssystem nicht alleine die Entwicklung der Almwirtschaft beeinflusst, wird exemplarisch der Zusammenhang zwischen der Entwicklung der Betriebe und dem Tourismusaufkommen sowie regionalökonomischen Bedingungen analysiert. Aus den Ergebnissen und den Erkenntnissen aus Experteninterviews leiten die Autoren Handlungsempfehlungen für eine nachhaltige Politik für Berggebiete ab.

Innovationen in der Landwirtschaft sollen dazu beitragen, künftige Herausforderungen wie den Klimawandel oder Ressourcenknappheit zu bewältigen. Zudem stehen sie im Zentrum gesellschaftlicher Debatten, wie etwa aktuell über die Gentechnik oder über bestimmte Tierhaltungsformen. Der Beitrag liefert unter anderem Hinweise, inwieweit Ursachen für diese Konflikte in den Rahmenbedingungen und im Ablauf von Innovationsprozessen in der Landwirtschaft begründet sind. Dazu wird das Innovationssystem der deutschen Landwirtschaft aus einer innovationssystemtheoretischen Perspektive heraus beleuchtet und mit empirischen Befunden zu Innovationshemmnissen belegt. Die in drei Fallstudien untersuchten Innovationen sollen jeweils einen Beitrag zur Bewältigung aktueller Herausforderungen leisten und sind in ihrem Entstehungsprozess durch mehrere Faktoren beeinflusst: verschiedene Technologien, vielfältige Akteure, Verbindungen in andere Branchen, sich überschneidende Rahmenbedingungen und aktuelle Herausforderungen sowie gesellschaftliche Diskurse. Dabei ermöglichen der verwendete Innovationssystemansatz und die empirische Untersuchung auf mehreren Ebenen, Einsicht in die Wechselwirkungen zu erlangen und somit Ansatzpunkte für Veränderungen zu erkennen. Die hohen Anforderungen an Innovationen in der Landwirtschaft und die gesellschaftlichen Akzeptanzdebatten lassen sich aus Sicht der Autoren anhand folgender Aspekte erklären und lösen: (1) Voraussetzung für Innovation ist das Vorhandensein einer Vertrauensbasis. Diese entsteht in der Landwirtschaft - und nicht nur dort - vorrangig in kleineren, längerfristigen Netzwerken. (2) Der Erfolg von Innovationen hängt stark davon ab, dass gesellschaftliche Anforderungen in die Innovationsprozesse inte- griert werden, zum Beispiel durch die frühzeitige Einbeziehung von Handel und Verbrauchern. Die Ergebnisse werfen über diese Balance von Kontinuität und Offenheit von landwirtschaftlichen Innovationsnetzwerken hinaus Fragen nach dem (Selbst-)Verständnis und der Gestaltung des Innovationssystems, der Anreize und Gestaltung interdisziplinärer Zusammenarbeit sowie dem Rollenverständnis der Akteure auf.
