    The recent development of satellite products for observing precipitation based on different technologies (microwaves, infrared, etc.) allows for near-real-time meteorological studies. The purpose of this article is to evaluate 11 satellite products (GHE, PDIR, IMERG-Early v6, IMERG-Late v6, CMORPH v0.x, CMORPH-RT v0.x, GSMaP-NRT v7, GSMaP-NRT-GC v7, GSMaP-NOW v7, GSMaP-NOW-GC v7, and DATABOURG) currently available and compare them to 2 ground-based radar networks (PANTHERE and OPERA) and the French rain-gauge network RADOME. Two case studies of intense precipitation over France (22 to 25 April 2022 and 24 to 29 June 2022) were selected. The radar estimations are closer to the RADOME observations than the satellite-based estimations, which tend to globally underestimate the precipitation amounts over the areas of interest while OPERA tends to strongly overestimate precipitation amounts during the June case study. The PANTHERE radar product and the carrier-to-noise product DATABOURG shows promising results. Near-real-time satellite products tend to have closer precipitation amounts to the reference dataset than satellite products with a shorter latency. The use of these datasets for nowcasting developments is plausible but further analyses must be conducted beforehand. International audience

    This demonstration paper introduces the urdflib library for MicroPython, which facilitates the development of RDF manipulation programs for embedded devices that run MicroPython, and additionally ensures the API is compatible with the widely used RDFLib Python library. The library is openly available on GitHub, a demo is presented, and the performances of the library are evaluated on the Unix and the ESP32 ports of MicroPython. urdflib performs better than RDFLib on the Unix port.     International audience; The chapter aims to re-contextualize the polarity between the commodification and decommodification of seeds, highlighting reactions and resistances to market pressures. It begins by discussing the emergence of the seed market and its main drivers, such as the biotechnological revolution, intellectual property rights, and the consolidation of the seed industry. The chapter then emphasizes that discontent with changes in agricultural production and economic integration has primarily led to discussions on so-called market failures rather than restricting market transactions. The preservation of public goods, specifically innovation and crop diversity, through the handling of purportedly market failures, has remained a key focus.Additionally, the chapter explores proposals advocating for the radical decommodification of seeds. This perspective aligns with research in ethics and economics on the concept of noxious markets. By examining the ethical and economic aspects of seeds as commodities, the exploration of decommodification (through “open source” and commons-based initiatives) aims to challenge the prevailing market-driven approach to seed production and seed provisioning. The chapter closes with a discussion on the coexistence between market society and peasant farming, examining the feasibility and desirability of maintaining control over innovations and agricultural production models while resisting the complete commodification of seeds.

    Les mini-laiteries sont au coeur d’une chaîne de valeur du lait local d’une grande importance sur le plan social et environnemental. Sur le plan économique, l’analyse du compte d’exploitation d’un petit échantillon de ces laiteries montre qu’elles sont fortement créatrices de valeur ajoutée et ont la capacité à s’adapter à un environnement défavorable. Cependant, elles ne peuvent durablement concurrencer les laiteries industrielles qui transforment de la poudre de lait importée à un prix de moitié inférieur au prix d’achat du lait local.Dans ces conditions, renforcer la protection du lait local, par le jeu d’exonération de TVA ou d’une hausse tarifaire, ne peut qu’accroître le déficit de compétitivité de la chaîne de valeur du lait local et confiner les produits à base de lait local à des marchés de niche. A contrario, l’élargissement de l’assiette de la TVA à l’ensemble des produits laitiers peut contribuer à accroître la compétitivité des petites et moyennes unités de transformation du lait local. Toutefois, cette mesure ne peut être l’instrument principal d’une politique de développement de la chaîne de valeur du lait local qui dépendra avant tout de la capacité de l’amont de la chaîne à se transformer pour gagner en productivité.

    The ability of trees to survive and naturally regenerate under increasing drought conditions will depend on their capacity to vary key hydraulic and morphological traits that increase drought tolerance. Yet, there has been limited investigation into this variability under recurrent severe drought conditions since the establishment phase. We investigated the hydraulic and leaf trait adjustments of Scots pine trees settled in an abandoned slag quarry by comparing them across three topographic positions inducing contrasted effects on growth. We measured xylem and foliar traits to compare the water status of trees according to tree location and to evaluate the respective risk for xylem hydraulic failure using the soil–plant hydraulic model SurEau. Compared to upslope and downslope trees, slope trees exhibited lower growth, photosynthetic pigment contents, vulnerability to embolism and specific hydraulic conductivity, as well as higher water potential at turgor loss point and midday water potentials. As a consequence, slope trees showed an increase in the hydraulic safety margin and a low level of embolism, compared to downslope and to upslope trees. Additionally, these adjustments induced an increase in the time to hydraulic failure in slope trees compared to downslope and upslope trees under similar drought conditions simulated using the SurEau model. These results suggest a prioritization of hydraulic safety over growth in Scots pine developed in a harsh environment, resulting in a dwarf phenotype. International audience

    Societal Impact Statement The rapidity of evolutionary changes in trees and whether this pace is sufficient to cope with ongoing climatic change are hotly debated issues in ecology today. Climate warming began in the mid‐19th century, after the Little Ice Age (LIA). Monitoring temporal genetic changes during this climatic transition in multicentennial oak populations revealed evidence of fluctuating selection and rapid evolution. These findings suggest that rapid evolution is probably also currently underway. They may lead to management options for operational forestry aiming to stimulate evolutionary mechanisms during the renewal of oak stands and to decrease potential temporal gene flow. Summary Retrospective studies of the evolutionary responses of tree populations to past documented climate change can provide insight into the adaptive responses of these organisms to ongoing environmental changes. We used a retrospective approach to monitor genetic changes over time in multicentennial sessile oak ( Quercus petraea L.) forests. We compared the offspring of three age‐structured cohorts (340, 170, and 60 years old, dating from about 1680, 1850, and 1960) spanning the late Little Ice Age and early Anthropocene. The experiment was repeated in three different forests in western France. The offspring were raised in a common garden experiment, with 30 to 53 open‐pollinated families per cohort. We assessed 16 phenotypic traits in the common garden and observed significant shifts between cohorts for growth and phenology‐related traits. These shifts were correlated with differences in the prevailing temperatures in the past and could be interpreted as temporal genetic changes. However, there was no temporal trend for genetic variation. The genetic changes between the cold (late Little Ice Age) and warm (early Anthropocene) periods were mostly opposite for growth and phenology‐related traits. These findings highlight fluctuations of selection and a rapid evolutionary response of tree populations to climatic transitions in the past, suggesting that similar trends may be at work now. We discuss these results in terms of the mode and direction of evolution, and their potential implications for the adaptive management of oak forests. La vitesse d'évolution des arbres et leur capacité à répondre au changement climatique sont très largement débattues aujourd'hui en écologie et en biologie évolutive. Dans cet article les auteurs ont mesuré les changements génétiques sur des chênes sessiles ayant traversé la transition climatique depuis la fin du petit âge glaciaire jusqu'à l'époque actuelle (de 1660 à nos jours). Les résultats montrent que les chênes ont évolué rapidement, sous l'effet de pressions de sélection contrastées lors de cette transition. Ils concluent que les mécanismes d'évolution rapide sont également à l'œuvre à l'époque actuelle, sous l'effet du changement climatique en cours et discutent de leur activation par la gestion forestière.     The impact of climate change on the agricultural sector is causing considerable concern worldwide. Using modelling and simulation to analyse the impact of and ways to mitigate climate change is challenging. However, over the last few decades modelling approaches have evolved to tackle this problem. This chapter presents the various advances of integrating different models that assess the effects of climate change on agriculture. Based on an ‘ideal’ modelling archetype, we discuss different solutions such as: i) a complete and balanced integration of models; ii) coupling sub-models; iii) integrating new knowledge and facilitating inter-operability; iv) integrating behaviours and decision-making to adapt to climate change; v) incorporating inter- and intra-species diversity into models; vi) from white to black box models and vii) ensemble modelling. The chapter includes examples of all these solutions. The last section explains why these modelling solutions may be insufficient and discusses future trends in modelling. International audience

    This paper presents the work conducted as part of the E-health, Mobility, and Big Data project (EMOB), which aims to provide a platform for analyzing physical and sedentary activity features and providing an inter-patient interpretation of their healthcare conditions based on signature similarities in their sedentary behavior. Our focus is on designing a dedicated microcontroller-based device to record patients' daily activities. We provide a detailed description of the hardware developed and its role in the project. We also discuss future perspectives on AI integration at the device level and the impact of this project on understanding the relationship between physical activities and improving health conditions, especially for patients with chronic pain and diseases.     The recent development of satellite products for observing precipitation based on different technologies (microwaves, infrared, etc.) allows for near-real-time meteorological studies. The purpose of this article is to evaluate 11 satellite products (GHE, PDIR, IMERG-Early v6, IMERG-Late v6, CMORPH v0.x, CMORPH-RT v0.x, GSMaP-NRT v7, GSMaP-NRT-GC v7, GSMaP-NOW v7, GSMaP-NOW-GC v7, and DATABOURG) currently available and compare them to 2 ground-based radar networks (PANTHERE and OPERA) and the French rain-gauge network RADOME. Two case studies of intense precipitation over France (22 to 25 April 2022 and 24 to 29 June 2022) were selected. The radar estimations are closer to the RADOME observations than the satellite-based estimations, which tend to globally underestimate the precipitation amounts over the areas of interest while OPERA tends to strongly overestimate precipitation amounts during the June case study. The PANTHERE radar product and the carrier-to-noise product DATABOURG shows promising results. Near-real-time satellite products tend to have closer precipitation amounts to the reference dataset than satellite products with a shorter latency. The use of these datasets for nowcasting developments is plausible but further analyses must be conducted beforehand. International audience

    This demonstration paper introduces the urdflib library for MicroPython, which facilitates the development of RDF manipulation programs for embedded devices that run MicroPython, and additionally ensures the API is compatible with the widely used RDFLib Python library. The library is openly available on GitHub, a demo is presented, and the performances of the library are evaluated on the Unix and the ESP32 ports of MicroPython. urdflib performs better than RDFLib on the Unix port.     International audience; The chapter aims to re-contextualize the polarity between the commodification and decommodification of seeds, highlighting reactions and resistances to market pressures. It begins by discussing the emergence of the seed market and its main drivers, such as the biotechnological revolution, intellectual property rights, and the consolidation of the seed industry. The chapter then emphasizes that discontent with changes in agricultural production and economic integration has primarily led to discussions on so-called market failures rather than restricting market transactions. The preservation of public goods, specifically innovation and crop diversity, through the handling of purportedly market failures, has remained a key focus.Additionally, the chapter explores proposals advocating for the radical decommodification of seeds. This perspective aligns with research in ethics and economics on the concept of noxious markets. By examining the ethical and economic aspects of seeds as commodities, the exploration of decommodification (through “open source” and commons-based initiatives) aims to challenge the prevailing market-driven approach to seed production and seed provisioning. The chapter closes with a discussion on the coexistence between market society and peasant farming, examining the feasibility and desirability of maintaining control over innovations and agricultural production models while resisting the complete commodification of seeds.

    Les mini-laiteries sont au coeur d’une chaîne de valeur du lait local d’une grande importance sur le plan social et environnemental. Sur le plan économique, l’analyse du compte d’exploitation d’un petit échantillon de ces laiteries montre qu’elles sont fortement créatrices de valeur ajoutée et ont la capacité à s’adapter à un environnement défavorable. Cependant, elles ne peuvent durablement concurrencer les laiteries industrielles qui transforment de la poudre de lait importée à un prix de moitié inférieur au prix d’achat du lait local.Dans ces conditions, renforcer la protection du lait local, par le jeu d’exonération de TVA ou d’une hausse tarifaire, ne peut qu’accroître le déficit de compétitivité de la chaîne de valeur du lait local et confiner les produits à base de lait local à des marchés de niche. A contrario, l’élargissement de l’assiette de la TVA à l’ensemble des produits laitiers peut contribuer à accroître la compétitivité des petites et moyennes unités de transformation du lait local. Toutefois, cette mesure ne peut être l’instrument principal d’une politique de développement de la chaîne de valeur du lait local qui dépendra avant tout de la capacité de l’amont de la chaîne à se transformer pour gagner en productivité.

    The ability of trees to survive and naturally regenerate under increasing drought conditions will depend on their capacity to vary key hydraulic and morphological traits that increase drought tolerance. Yet, there has been limited investigation into this variability under recurrent severe drought conditions since the establishment phase. We investigated the hydraulic and leaf trait adjustments of Scots pine trees settled in an abandoned slag quarry by comparing them across three topographic positions inducing contrasted effects on growth. We measured xylem and foliar traits to compare the water status of trees according to tree location and to evaluate the respective risk for xylem hydraulic failure using the soil–plant hydraulic model SurEau. Compared to upslope and downslope trees, slope trees exhibited lower growth, photosynthetic pigment contents, vulnerability to embolism and specific hydraulic conductivity, as well as higher water potential at turgor loss point and midday water potentials. As a consequence, slope trees showed an increase in the hydraulic safety margin and a low level of embolism, compared to downslope and to upslope trees. Additionally, these adjustments induced an increase in the time to hydraulic failure in slope trees compared to downslope and upslope trees under similar drought conditions simulated using the SurEau model. These results suggest a prioritization of hydraulic safety over growth in Scots pine developed in a harsh environment, resulting in a dwarf phenotype. International audience

    Societal Impact Statement The rapidity of evolutionary changes in trees and whether this pace is sufficient to cope with ongoing climatic change are hotly debated issues in ecology today. Climate warming began in the mid‐19th century, after the Little Ice Age (LIA). Monitoring temporal genetic changes during this climatic transition in multicentennial oak populations revealed evidence of fluctuating selection and rapid evolution. These findings suggest that rapid evolution is probably also currently underway. They may lead to management options for operational forestry aiming to stimulate evolutionary mechanisms during the renewal of oak stands and to decrease potential temporal gene flow. Summary Retrospective studies of the evolutionary responses of tree populations to past documented climate change can provide insight into the adaptive responses of these organisms to ongoing environmental changes. We used a retrospective approach to monitor genetic changes over time in multicentennial sessile oak ( Quercus petraea L.) forests. We compared the offspring of three age‐structured cohorts (340, 170, and 60 years old, dating from about 1680, 1850, and 1960) spanning the late Little Ice Age and early Anthropocene. The experiment was repeated in three different forests in western France. The offspring were raised in a common garden experiment, with 30 to 53 open‐pollinated families per cohort. We assessed 16 phenotypic traits in the common garden and observed significant shifts between cohorts for growth and phenology‐related traits. These shifts were correlated with differences in the prevailing temperatures in the past and could be interpreted as temporal genetic changes. However, there was no temporal trend for genetic variation. The genetic changes between the cold (late Little Ice Age) and warm (early Anthropocene) periods were mostly opposite for growth and phenology‐related traits. These findings highlight fluctuations of selection and a rapid evolutionary response of tree populations to climatic transitions in the past, suggesting that similar trends may be at work now. We discuss these results in terms of the mode and direction of evolution, and their potential implications for the adaptive management of oak forests. La vitesse d'évolution des arbres et leur capacité à répondre au changement climatique sont très largement débattues aujourd'hui en écologie et en biologie évolutive. Dans cet article les auteurs ont mesuré les changements génétiques sur des chênes sessiles ayant traversé la transition climatique depuis la fin du petit âge glaciaire jusqu'à l'époque actuelle (de 1660 à nos jours). Les résultats montrent que les chênes ont évolué rapidement, sous l'effet de pressions de sélection contrastées lors de cette transition.     The impact of climate change on the agricultural sector is causing considerable concern worldwide. Using modelling and simulation to analyse the impact of and ways to mitigate climate change is challenging. However, over the last few decades modelling approaches have evolved to tackle this problem. This chapter presents the various advances of integrating different models that assess the effects of climate change on agriculture. Based on an ‘ideal’ modelling archetype, we discuss different solutions such as: i) a complete and balanced integration of models; ii) coupling sub-models; iii) integrating new knowledge and facilitating inter-operability; iv) integrating behaviours and decision-making to adapt to climate change; v) incorporating inter- and intra-species diversity into models; vi) from white to black box models and vii) ensemble modelling. The chapter includes examples of all these solutions. The last section explains why these modelling solutions may be insufficient and discusses future trends in modelling. International audience

    This paper presents the work conducted as part of the E-health, Mobility, and Big Data project (EMOB), which aims to provide a platform for analyzing physical and sedentary activity features and providing an inter-patient interpretation of their healthcare conditions based on signature similarities in their sedentary behavior. Our focus is on designing a dedicated microcontroller-based device to record patients' daily activities. We provide a detailed description of the hardware developed and its role in the project. We also discuss future perspectives on AI integration at the device level and the impact of this project on understanding the relationship between physical activities and improving health conditions, especially for patients with chronic pain and diseases.
