Considering the insufficiency of the current spectral measurement methods in real-time, spectral integrity, continuity, and stability, we developed a new lidar system for spectrum measurement on an airborne platform that is based on a Fizeau interferometer and multichannel photomultiplier tube. In this approach, the lidar system uses time-of-flight information to measure the depth and relies on Brillouin spectroscopy as the temperature and salinity indicator. In this study, the system parameters were first optimized and analyzed. Based on the analysis results, the performance of the system in terms of detection depth and accuracy was evaluated. The results showed that this method has strong anti-interference ability, and under a temperature measurement accuracy of 0.5 °C and a salinity measurement accuracy of 1‰, the effective detection depth exceeds 40.51 m. Therefore, the proposed method performs well and will be a good choice for achieving Brillouin lidar application in seawater remote sensing.

This study provides a holistic approach on COVID-19 detection based on (1) molecular diagnosis which includes RT-PCR, antigen–antibody, and CRISPR-based biosensors and (2) computer aided detection based on AI-driven models which include deep learning and transfer learning approach. The review also provide comparison between these two emerging technologies and open research issues for the development of smart-IoMT-enabled platforms for the detection of COVID-19.

Implementation of an information system for horticulture faces many challenges: (i) great spatial variability within farms (e.g., hilly topography); (ii) different soil properties (e.g., different water holding capacity, different content in sand, sit, clay, and soil organic matter, different pH, and different permeability) for different cultivated plants; (iii) different soil nutrient uptake by different cultivated plants; (iv) small size of monoculture; and (v) great variety of farm components, agroecological zone, and socio-economic factors. Advances in information and communication technologies enable creation of low cost, efficient information systems that would improve resources management and increase productivity and sustainability of horticultural farms. We present an information system based on different sensing capability, Internet of Things, and mobile application for horticultural farms. An overview on different techniques and technologies for soil fertility evaluation is also presented. The results obtained in a botanical garden that simulates the diversity of environment and plant diversity of a horticultural farm are discussed considering the challenges identified in the literature and field research. In particular, tactile sensors can measure multi-axial force and detect slip can aid the end-effectors in grasping diverse objects in an unstructured environment. We propose BaroTac, which measures three-axial forces and detects slip with a barometric pressure sensor chip (BPSC) for robotic applications. A BPSC is an off-the-shelf commercial sensor that is inexpensive, easy to customize, robust, and simple to use. While a single BPSC-based tactile sensor can measure pressure, an array of BPSC-based tactile sensors can measure multi-axial force through the reactivity of each sensor and detect slip by observing high frequency due to slip vibration. We first experiment with defining the fundamental characteristics of a single-cell BPSC-based sensor to set the design parameters of our proposed sensor. Thereafter, we suggest the sensing method of BaroTac: calibration matrix for three-axis force measurement and discrete wavelet transform (DWT) for slip detection. Subsequently, we validate the three-axis force measuring ability and slip detectability of the fabricated multi-cell BPSC-based tactile sensor. The sensor measures three-axis force with low error (0.14, 0.18, and 0.3% in the X-, Y- and Z-axis, respectively) and discriminates slip in the high-frequency range (75–150 Hz). We finally show the practical applicability of BaroTac by installing them on the commercial robotic gripper and controlling the gripper to grasp common objects based on our sensor feedback.

Aguilera; Mario Ramirez; Cristhian Aguilera;We report a novel proposal for reducing the digital divide in rural multigrade schools, incorporating knowledge of robotics with a STEM approach to simultaneously promote curricular learning in mathematics and science in several school grades. We used an exploratory qualitative methodology to implement the proposal with 12 multigrade rural students. We explored the contribution of the approaches to the promotion of curricular learning in mathematics and science and the perceptions of using robotics to learn mathematics and science. As data collection techniques, we conducted focus groups and semi-structured interviews with the participants and analyzed their responses thematically. We concluded that the proposal could contribute to meeting the challenges of multigrade teaching. Our findings suggest that the proposal would simultaneously promote the development of curricular learning in mathematics and science in several school grades, offering an alternative for addressing various topics with different degrees of depth.

Naguib; Goldie Nejat;When we think of “soft” in terms of socially assistive robots (SARs), it is mainly in reference to the soft outer shells of these robots, ranging from robotic teddy bears to furry robot pets. However, soft robotics is a promising field that has not yet been leveraged by SAR design. Soft robotics is the incorporation of smart materials to achieve biomimetic motions, active deformations, and responsive sensing. By utilizing these distinctive characteristics, a new type of SAR can be developed that has the potential to be safer to interact with, more flexible, and uniquely uses novel interaction modes (colors/shapes) to engage in a heighted human–robot interaction. In this perspective article, we coin this new collaborative research area as SoftSAR. We provide extensive discussions on just how soft robotics can be utilized to positively impact SARs, from their actuation mechanisms to the sensory designs, and how valuable they will be in informing future SAR design and applications. With extensive discussions on the fundamental mechanisms of soft robotic technologies, we outline a number of key SAR research areas that can benefit from using unique soft robotic mechanisms, which will result in the creation of the new field of SoftSAR.

Lima; Meysam Basiri;Teams of mobile robots can be employed in many outdoor applications, such as precision agriculture, search and rescue, and industrial inspection, allowing an efficient and robust exploration of large areas and enhancing the operators’ situational awareness. In this context, this paper describes an active and decentralized framework for the collaborative 3D mapping of large outdoor areas using a team of mobile ground robots under limited communication range and bandwidth. A real-time method is proposed that allows the sharing and registration of individual local maps, obtained from 3D LiDAR measurements, to build a global representation of the environment. A conditional peer-to-peer communication strategy is used to share information over long-range and short-range distances while considering the bandwidth constraints. Results from both real-world and simulated experiments, executed in an actual solar power plant and in its digital twin representation, demonstrate the reliability and efficiency of the proposed decentralized framework for such large outdoor operations.

Caponero; Laura De Gara; Emiliano Schena;Global climate change and exponential population growth pose a challenge to agricultural outputs. In this scenario, novel techniques have been proposed to improve plant growth and increase crop yields. Wearable sensors are emerging as promising tools for the non-invasive monitoring of plant physiological and microclimate parameters. Features of plant wearables, such as easy anchorage to different organs, compliance with natural surfaces, high flexibility, and biocompatibility, allow for the detection of growth without impacting the plant functions. This work proposed two wearable sensors based on fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) within silicone matrices. The use of FBGs is motivated by their high sensitivity, multiplexing capacities, and chemical inertia. Firstly, we focused on the design and the fabrication of two plant wearables with different matrix shapes tailored to specific plant organs (i.e., tobacco stem and melon fruit). Then, we described the sensors’ metrological properties to investigate the sensitivity to strain and the influence of environmental factors, such as temperature and humidity, on the sensors’ performance. Finally, we performed experimental tests to preliminary assess the capability of the proposed sensors to monitor dimensional changes of plants in both laboratory and open field settings. The promising results will foster key actions to improve the use of this innovative technology in smart agriculture applications for increasing crop products quality, agricultural efficiency, and profits.

Hyperspectral cameras are imaging systems that can capture a wide range of electromagnetic spectra. This feature allows them to detect a broader range of colors and features than traditional cameras and to perceive the environment more accurately. Several surface types, such as mud, can be challenging to detect using an RGB camera. In our system, the hyperspectral camera is used for ground recognition (e.g., grass, bumpy road, asphalt). Traditional global path planning methods take the shortest path length as the optimization objective. We propose an improved A* algorithm to generate the collision-free path. Semantic information makes it possible to plan a feasible and safe path in a complex off-road environment, taking traveling time as the optimization objective. We presented the results of the experiments for data collected in a natural environment. An important novelty of this paper is using a modified nearest neighbor method for hyperspectral data analysis and then using the data for path planning tasks in the same work. Using the nearest neighbor method allows us to adjust the robotic system much faster than using neural networks. As our system is continuously evolving, we intend to examine the performance of the vehicle on various road surfaces, which is why we sought to create a classification system that does not require a prolonged learning process. In our paper, we aimed to demonstrate that the incorporation of a hyperspectral camera can not only enhance route planning but also aid in the determination of parameters such as speed and acceleration.

However, solely relying on vision for hand-object pose tracking faces challenges such as occlusions and objects moving out of view during robotic manipulation. In this work, we show that object kinematics can be inferred from local haptic feedback at the robot-object contact points, combined with robot kinematics information given an initial vision estimate of the object pose. A planar, dual-arm, teleoperated robotic setup was built to manipulate an object with hands shaped like circular discs. The robot hands were built with rubber cladding to allow for rolling contact without slipping. During stable grasping by the dual arm robot, under quasi-static conditions, the surface of the robot hand and object at the contact interface is defined by local geometric constraints. This allows one to define a relation between object orientation and robot hand orientation. With rolling contact, the displacement of the contact point on the object surface and the hand surface must be equal and opposite. This information, coupled with robot kinematics, allows one to compute the displacement of the object from its initial location. The mathematical formulation of the geometric constraints between robot hand and object is detailed. This is followed by the methodology in acquiring data from experiments to compute object kinematics. The sensors used in the experiments, along with calibration procedures, are presented before computing the object kinematics from recorded haptic feedback. Results comparing object kinematics obtained purely from vision and from haptics are presented to validate our method, along with the future ideas for perception via haptic manipulation. Considering the insufficiency of the current spectral measurement methods in real-time, spectral integrity, continuity, and stability, we developed a new lidar system for spectrum measurement on an airborne platform that is based on a Fizeau interferometer and multichannel photomultiplier tube. In this approach, the lidar system uses time-of-flight information to measure the depth and relies on Brillouin spectroscopy as the temperature and salinity indicator. In this study, the system parameters were first optimized and analyzed. Based on the analysis results, the performance of the system in terms of detection depth and accuracy was evaluated. The results showed that this method has strong anti-interference ability, and under a temperature measurement accuracy of 0.5 °C and a salinity measurement accuracy of 1‰, the effective detection depth exceeds 40.51 m. Therefore, the proposed method performs well and will be a good choice for achieving Brillouin lidar application in seawater remote sensing.

Implementation of an information system for horticulture faces many challenges: (i) great spatial variability within farms (e.g., hilly topography); (ii) different soil properties (e.g., different water holding capacity, different content in sand, sit, clay, and soil organic matter, different pH, and different permeability) for different cultivated plants; (iii) different soil nutrient uptake by different cultivated plants; (iv) small size of monoculture; and (v) great variety of farm components, agroecological zone, and socio-economic factors. Advances in information and communication technologies enable creation of low cost, efficient information systems that would improve resources management and increase productivity and sustainability of horticultural farms. We present an information system based on different sensing capability, Internet of Things, and mobile application for horticultural farms. An overview on different techniques and technologies for soil fertility evaluation is also presented. The results obtained in a botanical garden that simulates the diversity of environment and plant diversity of a horticultural farm are discussed considering the challenges identified in the literature and field research. In particular, tactile sensors can measure multi-axial force and detect slip can aid the end-effectors in grasping diverse objects in an unstructured environment. We propose BaroTac, which measures three-axial forces and detects slip with a barometric pressure sensor chip (BPSC) for robotic applications. A BPSC is an off-the-shelf commercial sensor that is inexpensive, easy to customize, robust, and simple to use. While a single BPSC-based tactile sensor can measure pressure, an array of BPSC-based tactile sensors can measure multi-axial force through the reactivity of each sensor and detect slip by observing high frequency due to slip vibration. We first experiment with defining the fundamental characteristics of a single-cell BPSC-based sensor to set the design parameters of our proposed sensor. Thereafter, we suggest the sensing method of BaroTac: calibration matrix for three-axis force measurement and discrete wavelet transform (DWT) for slip detection. Subsequently, we validate the three-axis force measuring ability and slip detectability of the fabricated multi-cell BPSC-based tactile sensor. The sensor measures three-axis force with low error (0.14, 0.18, and 0.3% in the X-, Y- and Z-axis, respectively) and discriminates slip in the high-frequency range (75–150 Hz). We finally show the practical applicability of BaroTac by installing them on the commercial robotic gripper and controlling the gripper to grasp common objects based on our sensor feedback.

We used an exploratory qualitative methodology to implement the proposal with 12 multigrade rural students. We explored the contribution of the approaches to the promotion of curricular learning in mathematics and science and the perceptions of using robotics to learn mathematics and science. As data collection techniques, we conducted focus groups and semi-structured interviews with the participants and analyzed their responses thematically. We concluded that the proposal could contribute to meeting the challenges of multigrade teaching. Our findings suggest that the proposal would simultaneously promote the development of curricular learning in mathematics and science in several school grades, offering an alternative for addressing various topics with different degrees of depth.

However, soft robotics is a promising field that has not yet been leveraged by SAR design. Soft robotics is the incorporation of smart materials to achieve biomimetic motions, active deformations, and responsive sensing. By utilizing these distinctive characteristics, a new type of SAR can be developed that has the potential to be safer to interact with, more flexible, and uniquely uses novel interaction modes (colors/shapes) to engage in a heighted human–robot interaction. In this perspective article, we coin this new collaborative research area as SoftSAR. We provide extensive discussions on just how soft robotics can be utilized to positively impact SARs, from their actuation mechanisms to the sensory designs, and how valuable they will be in informing future SAR design and applications. With extensive discussions on the fundamental mechanisms of soft robotic technologies, we outline a number of key SAR research areas that can benefit from using unique soft robotic mechanisms, which will result in the creation of the new field of SoftSAR.

In this context, this paper describes an active and decentralized framework for the collaborative 3D mapping of large outdoor areas using a team of mobile ground robots under limited communication range and bandwidth. A real-time method is proposed that allows the sharing and registration of individual local maps, obtained from 3D LiDAR measurements, to build a global representation of the environment. A conditional peer-to-peer communication strategy is used to share information over long-range and short-range distances while considering the bandwidth constraints. Results from both real-world and simulated experiments, executed in an actual solar power plant and in its digital twin representation, demonstrate the reliability and efficiency of the proposed decentralized framework for such large outdoor operations.

In this scenario, novel techniques have been proposed to improve plant growth and increase crop yields. Wearable sensors are emerging as promising tools for the non-invasive monitoring of plant physiological and microclimate parameters. Features of plant wearables, such as easy anchorage to different organs, compliance with natural surfaces, high flexibility, and biocompatibility, allow for the detection of growth without impacting the plant functions. This work proposed two wearable sensors based on fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) within silicone matrices. The use of FBGs is motivated by their high sensitivity, multiplexing capacities, and chemical inertia. Firstly, we focused on the design and the fabrication of two plant wearables with different matrix shapes tailored to specific plant organs (i.e., tobacco stem and melon fruit). Then, we described the sensors’ metrological properties to investigate the sensitivity to strain and the influence of environmental factors, such as temperature and humidity, on the sensors’ performance. Finally, we performed experimental tests to preliminary assess the capability of the proposed sensors to monitor dimensional changes of plants in both laboratory and open field settings. The promising results will foster key actions to improve the use of this innovative technology in smart agriculture applications for increasing crop products quality, agricultural efficiency, and profits.

Hyperspectral cameras are imaging systems that can capture a wide range of electromagnetic spectra. This feature allows them to detect a broader range of colors and features than traditional cameras and to perceive the environment more accurately. Several surface types, such as mud, can be challenging to detect using an RGB camera. In our system, the hyperspectral camera is used for ground recognition (e.g., grass, bumpy road, asphalt). Traditional global path planning methods take the shortest path length as the optimization objective. We propose an improved A* algorithm to generate the collision-free path. Semantic information makes it possible to plan a feasible and safe path in a complex off-road environment, taking traveling time as the optimization objective. We presented the results of the experiments for data collected in a natural environment. An important novelty of this paper is using a modified nearest neighbor method for hyperspectral data analysis and then using the data for path planning tasks in the same work. Using the nearest neighbor method allows us to adjust the robotic system much faster than using neural networks. As our system is continuously evolving, we intend to examine the performance of the vehicle on various road surfaces, which is why we sought to create a classification system that does not require a prolonged learning process. In our paper, we aimed to demonstrate that the incorporation of a hyperspectral camera can not only enhance route planning but also aid in the determination of parameters such as speed and acceleration.

However, solely relying on vision for hand-object pose tracking faces challenges such as occlusions and objects moving out of view during robotic manipulation. In this work, we show that object kinematics can be inferred from local haptic feedback at the robot-object contact points, combined with robot kinematics information given an initial vision estimate of the object pose. A planar, dual-arm, teleoperated robotic setup was built to manipulate an object with hands shaped like circular discs. The robot hands were built with rubber cladding to allow for rolling contact without slipping. During stable grasping by the dual arm robot, under quasi-static conditions, the surface of the robot hand and object at the contact interface is defined by local geometric constraints. This allows one to define a relation between object orientation and robot hand orientation. With rolling contact, the displacement of the contact point on the object surface and the hand surface must be equal and opposite. This information, coupled with robot kinematics, allows one to compute the displacement of the object from its initial location. The mathematical formulation of the geometric constraints between robot hand and object is detailed. This is followed by the methodology in acquiring data from experiments to compute object kinematics. The sensors used in the experiments, along with calibration procedures, are presented before computing the object kinematics from recorded haptic feedback. Results comparing object kinematics obtained purely from vision and from haptics are presented to validate our method, along with the future ideas for perception via haptic manipulation.
