The strategic planning of rural development is focused on both economic growth and sustainable development. Sustainable rural development is essential for conserving and improving resources, while economic growth contributes to a better standard of living. The aim of the research is to determine, using the participatory rural appraisal (PRA) methodology on the example of the village of Zlakusa, the economic activities developed in the village, the importance of rural tourism, and the scope of sustainable development taken into account in rural development. The results of the research show that the success of the rural community depends on: diversification of economic activities, which is accompanied by cohesion of the population through association and organization and initiating activities involving marginalized groups. Educating the population outside formal education improves the sustainable and economic development of the village and enables rural tourism to become an important part of economic activities and a channel for the commercialization of natural and cultural contents. organized activities aimed at local or republican authorities activation of human and social capital

The role of SEA is to guide the planning process towards the goal of securing the best effects in relation to the quality of the living environment and the socio-economic aspects of development. SEA is also an instrument that can be used when making optimal decisions about spatial development, which further contributes to its importance and role in the planning process. The implementation of SEA allows developers to establish the benefits and implications of the proposed spatial changes, taking into account the capacity of the space to sustain the planned development, and to determine the degree of acceptability of the proposed spatial changes. This paper presents a specific method used for impact assessment in SEA for the Agro-Waste Management Plan (AWMP) for Oplenac Vineyard. The specificity of this method is that it combines specific goals, indicators and criteria for assessing the effect of planning solutions formulated in the simulated AWMP for Oplenac Vineyard using a semi-quantitative expert method. The results of the paper indicate the possibility of using GIS tools to increase objectivity in the expert evaluation of planning solutions, particularly in relation to a group of criteria for assessing the spatial dispersion of the impacts. This reduces the subjectivity that is characteristic of all expert methods. The graphical presentation of the results in GIS technology and the use of matrices and graphs to present the results makes them easier to understand and creates a good basis for making optimal decisions on future activities concerning the elimination of waste from wineries and viticulture. The research was carried out within the framework of the NoAW project, which is supported by the European Commission through the Horizon2020 research and innovation program.

As such, it is difficult to decide which mitigation and adaptation measures are the most suitable in a given country and which should be prioritized in planning and implementation. The objective of the paper is to present farmer and expert rankings of potential adaptation measures in Serbia’s agriculture, to compare the two perspectives, and to propose priority measures. Twenty-four measures are identified as most appropriate for adaptation to climate change in Serbia. Farmers (141) provided feedback on priority measures by responding to an online questionnaire, while experts evaluated the measures through a two-stage multicriteria decision-making analysis (MCDA). Applying AHP, ten experts first assessed seven criteria identified as most relevant, including: level of responsibility, category, implementation timeframe, multifunctionality, technical skills, cost-benefit ratio, and the mitigation effectiveness of the measure. In the second stage, the measures were evaluated against the criteria and ranked by TOPSIS. The outcomes of the study indicate that the MCDA ranking was slightly different from that resulting from farmers’ feedback. There is direct agreement on two of the first five priority measures (use of multi-purpose river reservoirs for water supply and agricultural technologies), and six of the first 10 measures – the most closely ranked are irrigation and antihail netting. However, there is a considerable difference in the case of measures that farmers and stakeholders do not recognize as significant because they either do not see a direct benefit for them (e.g. restoration of wetlands or vegetation and afforestation to prevent flooding or erosion), or they cannot implement the measures due to topography (e.g. use of drainage ditches for irrigation). The applied methodology shows that planning of adaptation measures requires consultation of experts in different fields and appreciation of numerous criteria, in order for decisions to be sustainable and applicable in practice.

Tasić; Ignacio A. Ciampitti; Ivica G. Đalović; Petar Mitrović; Vladimir Sikora; P. V. Vara Prasad;Abstract Sorghum is an important crop that serve multiple purposes as human food, animal feed, and bioenergy production. There are opportunities to produce different types of biofuels from sorghum-based biomass. Sorghum with its vast genetic resources can serve as bioenergy crop and not compete against the value of it as food and nutritional security crop. Bioenegy crops provides an opportunity for agriculture to be part of solution for energy and mitigation to climate change. This review provides detailed overview and current knowledge on the conversion of sorghum biomass (stalks, leaves, and grains) into liquid (bioethanol, biodiesel, and bio-oil), gas (biohydrogen, biogas, and syngas) and solid (biochar) biofuels. Progress made in the different sorghum-based biomass pretreatment and conversion processes including chemical, biochemical, thermochemical and biological processes (e.g. saccharification, fermentation, transesterification, hydrothermal liquefaction, pyrolysis, and gasification) are highlighted and described. In addition, several value-added products from sorghum gaining importance in biofuels production are summarized. Finally, the potential outlook on sorghum based biorefiners and potential for improving sorghum-based biofuel production is presented and discussed. The biorefinery concept offers a considerable scope for optimization of sorghum biomass utilization to produce biofuels and biochemicals. However, there is further need to clearly identify the best methods of pre-treatment, processing, and products from different sources. Sorghum with its high biomass production and multiple use has the potential to be key biofuel crop. Further research is needed to identify most efficient and cost effective processes to ensure the value of biofuel and other bioproducts from sorghum. A complete lifecycle analyses indicating the challenges and opportunities to enhance the efficiency, benefits, and challenges in different steps and finding solutions to overcome those challenges will be of prime importance. Strong collaboration between private and public sector researhcers and multidisciplinary teams will be required to develop a comprehensive biorefinery models.

The efficiency of primary agricultural production is under constant analysis relative to energy, economy and ecology. Notwithstanding technological innovations in agricultural production, engineers and researchers are still seeking to create a production system that would render the primary agricultural production more energy efficient and ecologically sustainable. The purpose of this paper is to examine the energy consumption and efficiency of crop production with an emphasis on the importance of mineral fertilizers and their influence on the overall energy consumption. The results obtained indicate that mineral fertilizers claim a share of the total energy consumption in crop production ranging from 40.53 % in sunflowers to 55.19 % in maize. A statistically significant correlation was found between the energy inputs for fertilizers and crop yields. The regression analysis performed showed a positive correlation between the energy inputs for fertilizers and yields in all the crops considered, with the exception of wheat.

Abstract With the formulation of tourism development strategies for the social and economic development of an area, rural tourism moved to a more complex phase of development. Numerous empirical studies have shown that different forms of rural tourism can have positive and negative effects on the natural and socio-economic context in the area where they are present. There are several methodologies for assessing the development of tourism in rural areas. One of the efficient and commonly used tools in preliminary decision-making phases and a precursor to strategic planning is SWOT analysis, which allows the identification of the best strategy that maximizes strengths and opportunities, and minimizes weaknesses and threats. In this study, a survey was conducted using the method of selecting respondents in order to diagnose the economic, social, cultural and environmental aspects with a focus on strengths and weaknesses in rural settlements in the area of National Park (NP) Kopaonik and its protection zone. Through the SWOT analysis, based on the attitudes of the local population, defined twenty indicators that determine the Sustainable Rural Development Index (SRDI). Research has shown that in area, the influence factor in strengths is higher in relation to the weaknesses, while the influence factor in opportunities is higher than in threats. The final result of the SRDI (0.63), shows that the current development of tourism is within the limits of sustainability and contributes to the sustainable development of rural settlements. The results of the research are the basis for the development of the strategy for future development of tourism in the research area.

These polymers are mostly used for high-end applications but they have potential for much wider application with decrease in production costs. Available technologies and strategies are reviewed in order to point out the issues, challenges and solutions relevant to increase sustainability and competitiveness of LA production on agricultural residues and wastes. Data on chemical composition, regional and seasonal availability of agricultural residues, wastes and by-products are lacking to provide predictable and effective combining for LA production. Precision agriculture, remote sensing and integration with data on chemical composition can help in better planning and more adequate exploitation of available sources in future. Novel pretreatments for the most abundant lignocellulosic feedstocks, which allow utilization of carbohydrates in LA production and side streams like lignin in other biorefineries are needed. Integration of pretreatment, hydrolysis and fermentation under non-sterile conditions or open fermentation mode should enable easier scale up and decrease energy consumption and costs without sacrificing LA purity. Capital investments in improvement of the available technologies are high. Support from policy makers stimulating production of LA polymers from second and third generation feedstocks will help in research, development and faster adoption on larger scale. For production of LA polymers with tailored properties, it is essential to choose the most productive method for LA production and separation from these complex substrates. The shift in research interest from LA polymerization towards “green” processing of LA polymers products is occurring and that will be the additional driving force for the field in future.

AbstractBACKGROUNDGrowing challenges of resource depletion, food security and environmental protection are putting stress on the development of biorefinery processes for bioprocessing of residues from food and agro‐industry into value‐added products. In this study, the simultaneous production of lactic acid (LA) and livestock feed on a combined substrate based on molasses and potato stillage by Lactobacillus paracasei NRRL B‐4564 immobilized onto sunflower seed hull (SSH), brewer's spent grain (BSG) and sugar beet pulp (SBP) was studied.RESULTSThe highest total LA concentration of 399 g L−1 with overall productivity of 1.27 g L−1 h−1 was achieved in repeated batch fermentation by SBP‐immobilized biocatalyst, followed by BSG‐ and SSH‐immobilized cells. Fermentation improved the content of proteins and ash, and decreased the content of fibers in all three support materials. In addition, the fermentation had favorable effect on in vitro dry matter digestibility and energy values of SSH and BSG. According to assessment of probiotic potential, L. paracasei demonstrated a favorable probiotic profile, exhibiting high resistance to simulated ruminant digestive tract and significant antioxidant and antimicrobial activity.CONCLUSIONSThe proposed strategy enables valorization of agro‐industrial residues as value‐added ruminant feed and simultaneous LA production. Following principles of circular economy, the developed process combines different raw materials and integrates them into a biorefinery process, improving the overall profitability and productivity. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry
