    Field peas are mostly used for animal nutrition in the Balkan region and in the countries of the former USSR, while in the countries of Western Europe, Canada, the USA and the Middle East they are mostly used for human nutrition. Over three years (2010-2012), the yield and grain yield components of the most widespread field pea varieties were examined. The lowest number of plants was determined in 'NS Junior' intended for combined use (65 plants/m2), while 'Dukat' and 'Partner' had 88 and 85 plants/m2 on average, respectively. The average stem height was 158 cm for 'NS Junior', and 65 and 70 cm for 'Dukat' and 'Partner', respectively. 'Dukat' (4846 kg/ha) and 'Partner' (4521 kg/ha) had significantly higher grain yields compared with 'NS Junior' (2717 kg/ha). The content of crude protein in the grain was highest in 'NS Junior' (27.6%), while 'Dukat' and 'Partner' had lower contents (23-25%). Proteinski grašak se uglavnom koristi za ishranu životinja u našem regionu i u zemljama bivšeg SSSR-a, dok se u zemljama zapadne Evrope, Kanade, SAD-a i Bliskog istoka najviše koristi za ishranu ljudi. Tokom tri godine (2010-2012) ispitivane su komponente prinosa i prinos zrna najrasprostranjenijih sorti proteinskog graška. Najmanji broj biljaka utvrđen je kod sorte NS Junior, namenjene za kombinovanu upotrebu (65 biljaka / m2), dok su sorte Dukat i Partner imale u proseku 88 i 85 biljaka / m2. Prosečna visina stabljike za sortu NS Junior iznosila je 158 cm, a za sorte Dukat i Partner 65 i 70 cm. Sorte Dukat (4846 kg / ha) i Partner (4521 kg / ha) imale su znatno veći prinos zrna u poređenju sa sortom NS Junior (2717 kg / ha). Sadržaj sirovih proteina u zrnu bio je najveći kod sorte NS Junior (27,6%), dok su sorte Dukat i Partner imale između 23 i 25%.

    The first local cultivar of winter pea for grain, 'NS MRAZ', was developed by pedigree selection from the hybrid population created by crossing local populations and one French line of pea. The cultivar has a high seed yield potential, exceptional earliness and tolerance to low temperatures. Its average plant height is 75-85 cm; it is of the afila type of pea, tolerant to lodging and of uniform maturity. Its genetic potential for seed yield is more than 7,000 kg ha-1, and it achieved an average seed yield of 5,110 kg ha-1 in three-year trials, while seed yield in production conditions was above 5,500 kg ha-1. Thousand-grain weight is about 200 g, which was the goal achieved in reducing the amount of seed per unit area. Protein yield ranged from 1,100 to 1,200 kg ha-1. Prva domaća sorta ozimog graška za zrno, NS MRAZ, nastala je pedigre metodom selekcije iz hibridne populacije nastale ukrštanjem domaćih populacija i jedne francuske linije graška. Sorta se odlikuje visokim potencijalom rodnosti zrna, izuzetnom ranostasnošću i otpornošću na niske temperature. Prosečna visina stabljike je 75 do 85 cm, afila tipa, tolerantna na poleganje i ujednačenog sazrevanja. Genetički potencijal za prinos zrna je iznad 7 000 kg ha -1 , a u trogodišnjim ogledima ostvarila je prosečan prinos zrna od 5 110 kg ha -1 , dok je u proizvodnim uslovima prinos semena bio iznad 5 500 kg ha -1 . Masa 1000 zrna je oko 200 grama, što je i bio cilj, kako bi se smanjila količina semena po jedinici površine. Prinos proteina kretao se od 1 100 do 1 200 kg ha -1 .

    Legumes and brassicas have much in common: importance in agricultural history, rich biodiversity, numerous forms of use, high adaptability to diverse farming designs, and various non-food applications. Rare available resources demonstrate intercropping legumes and brassicas as beneficial to both, especially for the latter, profiting from better nitrogen nutrition. Our team aimed at designing a scheme of the intercrops of autumn- and spring-sown annual legumes with brassicas for ruminant feeding and green manure, and has carried out a set of field trials in a temperate Southeast European environment and during the past decade, aimed at assessing their potential for yields of forage dry matter and aboveground biomass nitrogen and their economic reliability via land equivalent ratio (LER). This review provides a cross-view of the most important deliverables of our applied research, including eight annual legume crops and six brassica species, demonstrating that nearly all the intercrops were economically reliable, as well as that those involving hairy vetch, Hungarian vetch, Narbonne vetch and pea on one side, and fodder kale and rapeseed on the other, were most productive in both manners. Feeling encouraged that this pioneering study may stimulate similar analyses in other environments and that intercropping annual legume and brassicas may play a large- scale role in diverse cropping systems, our team is heading a detailed examination of various extended research.

    Authors: Aleksandar Mikić;

    Vetches (Vicia spp.) were part of the everyday diet of the modern human Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers at the end of the last Ice Age. Among the major criteria to determine the domestication in vetches and other ancient grain legumes are non-dehiscent pods, larger seed size and smooth seed coat. The seeds of bitter vetch [V. ervilia (L.) Willd.] were found among both the earliest findings of wild collected plants from Early Pre-Pottery Neolithic, from 12th millennium BC cal and the storages of domesticated crops of the Near East Neolithic. Vetches entered Europe in its south-east regions and progressed into its interior via Danube. Archaeological findings offer nice examples that confirm the importance vetches had in the primeval agriculture in Europe and its adjacent regions. Apart from the samples of cultivated vetches used either for food or feed or both, there is rich archaobotanical evidence on the wild and weedy vetch species in diverse European ecosystems. Recently the first known success has been obtained in the extraction of ancient DNA from charred bitter vetch seeds. The future research on this subject certainly must make a more detailed map of the paths of the vetch distribution over Europe and, especially, its long-term and essentially important ties with their domestication and distribution in Asia Minor, Near East and North Africa. The initiated research on the vetch ancient DNA should bring more light onto the individual steps of the earliest days of vetch crops. The preliminary historical linguistic analysis assessed two Proto-Indo-European roots associated with vetches, *erəg w (h)— denoting pea, and *weik— meaning to avoid, initially gave the Latin vincīre, meaning to bind, and then vicia, denoting vetches in general. This multidisciplinary approach will hopefully be a useful reminder how widespread and important vetches used to be, as well as a tool for their re-introduction as presently neglected crops into the contemporary European agriculture.

    Authors: Aleksandar Mikić;

    ‘Greek hay’, fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.), is a legume species native to the eastern Mediterranean. It is cultivated mostly for its grain used in traditional dishes, such as curry, and as medicaments in local traditional medicines. The genetic resources of fenugreek are endangered. The most common methods in developing advanced cultivars of fenugreek are recurrent or family selection. The local landraces of fenugreek have a potential for up to 20 t ha−1 of fresh forage and more than 1100 kg ha−1 of grain and may have tolerance to various forms of biotic stresses. Despite the fact that fenugreek originated in the Mediterranean basin, extraordinarily rich sources of wild populations and local landraces, this crop is neglected, underutilized and almost completely forgotten. The main goal of this short communication is to preserve this crop in the Mediterranean and adjacent regions and its reintroduction in local agricultures.

    Alfalfa is the most important forage crop in Serbia grown for high yields of quality fodder. In order to expand alfalfa production on pseudogleys, research was conducted in the vicinity of Kraljevo. Results suggest the potential for growing alfalfa on acid soils in Serbia. The combined use of 2.5 t ha-1 and 5 t ha-1 lime and 30 t ha-1 manure on the pseudogley increases the soil pH, humus content and available phosphorus and potassium levels, while decreasing the content of mobile aluminum, thus making the soil suitable for alfalfa production and high biomass yields (115.9 t ha-1) during 3-4 years of stand utilization. Lucerka je najznačajnija krmna biljka u Srbiji jer daje visoke prinose kvalitetne kabaste stočne hrane, koja se najviše koristi u ishrani preživara, uglavnom kao seno. Zbog izuzetne osetljivosti na niske pH vrednosti zemljišta, u cilju proširenja areala, lucerka je gajena na pseudogleju, na području Kraljeva. Đubrenje lucerke samo mineralnim đubrivima ne utiče na promenu agrohemijskih osobina pseudogleja, ali se dodavanjem kreča prinos lucerke značajno povećava. Rezultati ukazuju na mogućnost gajenja lucerke na ovom tipu zemljišta uz odgovarajuće đubrenje. Primenom 2,5 t ha-1 i 5 t ha-1 kreča u kombinaciji sa 30 t ha-1 stajnjaka na pseudogleju se povećava pH vrednost zemljišta, raste sadržaj humusa, pristupačnog fosfora i kalijuma, i smanjuje se sadržaj mobilnog aluminijuma, što ga čini podesnim za gajenje lucerke i postizanje visokih prinosa biomase (115,9 t ha-1) tokom perioda iskorišćavanja od 3-4 godine. U gajenju lucerke na kiselim zemljištima, mora se voditi računa o ekonomičnosti primene mineralnih đubriva i kreča.

    Authors: Aleksandar Mikić;
