description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Conference object , Part of book or chapter of book 2024 FinlandPublisher:Springer International Publishing Saunila, Minna; Ukko, Juhani; Rantala, Tero; Holopainen, Mira; Nasiri, Mina; This study focuses on the mediating role of business renewal in the relationship between digital business models and financial performance. An enhanced understanding of the direct and indirect influences of digital business models and business renewal will aid the construction of a more comprehensive picture of managing business models in digital transformation. The results are based on a survey of 275 Finnish SMEs. The results confirm the mediating effect of business renewal between digital business models and financial performance. This means that changes in the digital business model cannot, on their own, cause any changes in financial performance; however, through business renewal, changes in the digital business model can impact financial performance. It can enable global wireless coverage for Internet of Things (IoT) applications while complementing terrestrial networks. Specifically, DtS can offer seamless connectivity for the machine applications operating in remote areas where terrestrial coverage is limited or unavailable. This paper reviews the DtS IoT networks state-of-the-art and offers an overview focusing on its fundamental components and key requirements. Particularly, we discuss the two fundamental architecture alternatives namely, DtS and indirect-to-satellite (ItS) for supporting IoT services and pinpoint their key trade-off, pros, and cons. We also present the potential DtS applications and their relevant data traffic models and requirements. Finally, we identify some open challenges including (i) link budget aspects; (ii) spectrum limitations and regulations; (iii) massive connectivity demands and interference; and (iv) synchronization problems owing to satellite mobility. This paper also presents several potential future research directions in the context of DtS IoT networks.

As a consequence, integration management is becoming increasingly difficult, leading to scalability, stability, and system outage problems that directly affect company performance. For that reason the modern integration management platforms have emerged to offer efficient management of the growing number of integrations, as well as a new way to handle, enrich, and utilize data both inside and outside organizations. This research involved interviews with 20 software vendor professionals and 20 clients who had recently undergone an integration platform project. The study identified key drivers behind integration management projects and recognized different maturity levels in integration management. The results revealed that more mature companies are utilizing modern integration platforms to support their digital transformation. The study also highlighted the growing importance of data management and utilization in integration solutions. To address these findings, a maturity model was developed to help companies evaluate their current integration management status and find ways to progress in their integration management. To be effective, they must run along decades of a real machine lifecycle. Ensuring coherence between a real machine and its digital twin over such a long period is a challenging task that has not yet been well-studied. This task involves preserving the design and operational data and periodic execution of digital twin software that processes such data. The circumstances of heavy equipment operation complicate the task. This paper considers the problem of digital twin data and software management in light of the unique challenges related to heavy equipment. It presents an experimental case study for running digital twins of mobile log cranes using a data model and a microservices-based architecture developed by the authors. The results demonstrate the capability of the architecture for running physics-based digital twins of heavy equipment in a heterogeneous execution environment consisting of local, edge, and cloud computing resources.

The performance of the proposed deep learning models is compared to established conventional machine learning approaches. Studied use-cases include mapping of forest disturbance (windthrown forests, snowload damages) using deep change vector analysis, forest height mapping using UNet+ based models, Momentum contrast and regression modeling. Study areas were represented by several boreal forest sites in Finland. Our results indicate that developed methods allow to achieve superior classification and prediction accuracies compared to traditional methodologies and mimimize the amount of necessary in-situ forestry data.

In this work, we propose Wild Visual Navigation (WVN), an online self-supervised learning system for traversability estimation which uses only vision. The system is able to continuously adapt from a short human demonstration in the field. It leverages high-dimensional features from self-supervised visual transformer models, with an online scheme for supervision generation that runs in real-time on the robot. We demonstrate the advantages of our approach with experiments and ablation studies in challenging environments in forests, parks, and grasslands. Our system is able to bootstrap the traversable terrain segmentation in less than 5 min of in-field training time, enabling the robot to navigate in complex outdoor terrains - negotiating obstacles in high grass as well as a 1.4 km footpath following. While our experiments were executed with a quadruped robot, ANYmal, the approach presented can generalize to any ground robot. Proceedings of Robotics: Science and System XIX ISBN:978-0-9923747-9-2

This method has been proven to be efficient in real-time robotic applications. However, the method is not robust to a high degree of occlusion. We address this limitation in two steps. First, we propose a novel semantic 3D object-parts segmentation method that has the flexibility of Local-HDP. This method is shown to be suitable for open-ended scenarios where the number of 3D objects or object parts is not fixed and can grow over time. We show that the proposed method has a higher percentage of mean intersection over union, using a smaller number of learning instances. Second, we integrate this technique with a recently introduced argumentation-based online incremental learning method, thereby enabling the model to handle a high degree of occlusion. We show that the resulting model produces an explicit set of explanations for the 3D object category recognition task. Accepted at ICRA 2023 Conference

description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Conference object , Part of book or chapter of book 2024 FinlandPublisher:Springer International Publishing Saunila, Minna; Ukko, Juhani; Rantala, Tero; Holopainen, Mira; Nasiri, Mina; This study focuses on the mediating role of business renewal in the relationship between digital business models and financial performance.
