    Abstract Student social connectedness is indicated to be changing as universities are becoming more digitalised. Although social connectedness is shown to have a significant influence on the learning process, little is understood about the relationship between student social connectedness and the hybrid university learning environment (HULE). This empirical study aims to develop understandings by exploring student social connectedness in a hybrid-style class at a Swiss university. The study applies theories of placemaking and socio-materiality to explore students’ self-reported and observed perceptions of individual social connectedness at the start of a university master’s level course. The qualitative study is conducted using questionnaire data and observational data collected over the first month of a new course starting in the Autumn semester. The findings indicate that although students favour flexibility to design their learning space, they require the appropriate tools and guidance in which to make effective decisions for their social connectedness. Understanding the correct implementation of co-design for the HULE is therefore deemed important to facilitate social connectedness, this is particularly necessary for the liminal space. These findings are preliminary as part of a larger research project and offer a basis for further research to be developed. This study offers an innovative perspective of the HULE based on student social connectedness, impacting the existing pedagogical approach for university courses.

    Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic led to an acceleration of digitalisation in healthcare institutions, not only in the medical field but also within non-medical, which includes facility management (FM). FM organisations are increasingly confronted with the need to digitally transform their operations and to implement new digital technologies. This paper aims at providing scholars and professionals with an overview of the various digital technologies and systems that are relevant in shaping the digital transformation. An integrative literature review has been chosen, as it provides a systematic approach to map, collate and report on key findings and concepts from the literature for researchers and practitioners. Overall, 33 articles were systematically reviewed. 22 different digital technologies and systems were identified in the literature and were added to so-called technology clusters. From all the described technologies, Building Information Modelling (BIM) is most prominently cited. Furthermore, Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), Digital Twins (DT), and Blockchain technologies are commonly found. Additional technologies and systems mentioned in the literature, though not further detailed, were also added within a separate cluster. This study also discusses the implications for the digital transformation which is important when introducing novel digital technologies in healthcare organisations. It is argued that FM in healthcare needs to focus on integrating technologies, both at a technological level, and particularly at an organisational and interorganisational level.

    Abstract Rock mass characterization is a very important part of engineering geological investigation. For a better understanding of the rock mass behaviour, it is crucially important to obtain as much as possible information about the discontinuity network, especially about orientation and the number of dominant discontinuity sets. The traditional methodology includes field mapping which dominantly produces a limited amount of data and consequently only a rough estimate about discontinuity network. To increase the number of measurements and to eliminate orientation bias, rock mass on the Špičunak rock slope in Gorski kotar, Croatia, was analysed using a combination of 3D Point Cloud and Textured Mesh Model generated from 3D Point Cloud by Poisson surface reconstruction. Both models were obtained from Terrestrial Laser Scanning. Two considerably different parts of a rock slope, with different weathering conditions and different degrees of fracturing were mapped. Discontinuities were mapped in the field and on the models using manual mapping techniques and semi-automated methods. Manual mapping on a 3D Point Cloud and Textured Mesh Model was done by Compass plugin and by Trace a polyline tool in Cloud Compare software version V2.12 and semi-automated mapping methods were done by Discontinuity Set Extractor and qFacet Fast Marching plugin for Cloud Compare software version V2.12. This study was used to show how the application of different methodologies, for the detection of geometric properties of discontinuities, influences the result. Statistical analyses were performed on the collected data to determine differences in the accuracy between the mapping techniques. Manual mapping on the 3D Point Cloud and high-resolution Textured Mesh Model showed good agreement with field measurements, apart from the higher number of discontinuities mapped by remote sensing methods. On the other hand, significant deviations were found between manual and semi-automated mapping techniques. Semiautomated methods did not correctly detect certain discontinuities, especially bedding planes that are perpendicular to a rock face. Also, semi-automated methods overestimate the number of discontinuity sets, especially in a highly weathered and highly fractured rock mass. These differences between methods can influence kinematic analysis results. Based on the results, an appropriate methodology was proposed to utilize the advantages of both manual and semiautomated methods. The proposed approach presents a powerful tool to accurately map and measure discontinuity orientation with results comparable to the field measurements.

    Abstract In a context of digitalization and increasing quality requirements, the building sector is facing an increasing level of complexity regarding its design process. This results in a growing number of involved actors from different domains, a multitude of tasks to be completed and a higher degree of needed expertise. New buildings are also required to reach higher performances in terms of environmental quality. To that regard, the exploitation of the full potential of digital tools can facilitate the integration of environmental aspects in the planning process, limit productivity shortcomings and reduce environmental impacts, which can result from an unaware decision making. Building environmental assessment can be performed through several Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)-based tools. “Pure calculation” tools quantify final buildings’ environmental potential, while “complex tools” additionally support decision making during the planning process. It is often difficult to choose the best suitable tool, which strongly depends on the user’s needs. Within the IEA EBC Annex 72, a survey was realized with the main objective of creating a comprehensive overview of the existing tools dedicated to buildings LCA. The questionnaire included the usability, functionality, compliance, data reliability and interoperability of the analysed tools. Lastly, based on the survey outcomes and their critical assessment, a procedure for the identification and selection of a tool has been proposed based on user’s needs. As a result, this work outlines main features of currently available building LCA tools, for which there is a harmonized status in terms of usability and overall applied LCA methodology. Despite the need for more automatized workflows, tools’ embedding is mostly not yet applicable in system chains or limited to a restricted number of tools.

    Abstract The purpose of this work is to provide a framework for the vulnerability of traditional historical buildings. Buildings that are not constrained and do not have a design obligation for minor energy retrofit interventions. The digitization of the construction sector can help to design interventions with Digital Twin methodologies that can be integrated into a single document that collects them as the Digital Building Logbook. We propose a definition of an innovative workflow that defines integrations and technological innovations in the historical building stock. In this work are presented operational proposals to ensure and increase the protection and conservation of the Italian historical building stock, trying to strengthen the activities of designers and companies for the reduction of seismic vulnerability in case of maintenance or energy retrofit.

    Abstract Variations in soil structural and physiochemical properties can impact earth system models related to climate change. However, in most of the countries including Malaysia, soil data are available as low resolution and semi-detailed soil series maps, which hinder their applicability. Therefore, the objective of this study was to develop a framework to compare the conventional soil mapping with digital soil databases and to determine the accuracy of digital soil mapping. Kedah province located in the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia was selected as the study area. Observed soil (Cation exchange capacity – CEC, pH, organic matter as chemical and clay, sand and silt content as physical properties) data published by the Department of Agriculture, Malaysia was compared with SoilGrid (soillgrid.org) dataset. The depths of observed data were harmonised to international standard soil depths as; 0-5, 5-15, 15-30, s30-60, 60-100, and 100-200 cm using the equal quadratic spline approach. Global data were compared with harmonised 16 selected soil series data in Malaysia. Observed soil chemical properties (CEC, pH, and organic carbon) were within the range of SoilGrids data which allows the selected chemical properties to be used where observed data are limited or not available. In contrast, most of the soil physical properties from SoilGrids were not accurate when compared with the observed data. The developed framework in this study can be used to strengthen the accuracy of the available soil data in Earth system models, particularly those that are related to organic carbon and soil structural properties.

    Abstract This study aims to examine the determinants of environmental performance on the firms listed in the agriculture sector of the Indonesian Stock Exchange. The analysis technique uses multiple regressions to observe 67 firms listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange in the agriculture sector during 2016 – 2019. Furthermore, the independent variables consist of return on equity (ROE), firm age, size, leverage, and audit firm; and the dependent is environmental performance. The result shows that return on equity negatively affects environmental performance while firm age, size, and leverage have a positive effect. Furthermore, audit firm does not affect environmental performance in Indonesian Agricultural Firms. Therefore, firms with higher age, bigger sizes, and leverage will likely increase environmental performance even though profitability has decreased. Several factors such as firm age, size, leverage, and profitability should be considered to analyze environmental performance.

    Abstract In the farms of the Belgorod region, a comprehensive study was conducted to assess the productivity of perennial grasses using soil-saving technologies in comparison with traditional methods of tillage. The results of the dispersion analysis showed that the value of the indicator of the total aboveground and underground productivity of perennial grasses significantly depends on the species composition of the grass stand. It was found that the difference between the site of a perennial fallow and fields with perennial grasses with the use of soil-saving technologies did not exceed 13.9% in terms of the total aboveground productivity. The aboveground productivity of alfalfa was significantly higher than in the control variant (fallow field) and in the experimental fields with soil conservation technologies – by 73.6 % and 101.6 %, respectively. The accumulation of underground mass in the fallow area and in areas using soil conservation technologies is approximately at the same level – 1.91 kg*(m) − 2 in the control and 1.85-2.25 (average 2.04) kg*(m) − 2 in soil-saving crop rotations. At the same time, the Cv in the control variant was 15.78 %, and in grass mixtures, respectively, it was at the level of 16.47 %; 18.74 % and 18.08 %. In alfalfa crops, the accumulation of mass in the underground layer was inferior to the control variant by an average of 27.2 %, and to soil conservation technologies-by an average of 31.9 %. Alfalfa crops, providing greater aboveground productivity, are more intensive in terms of production, but less effective means of increasing the content of organic matter in the soil compared to cereal-legume grass mixtures. In soil conservation agriculture, it is necessary to use cereal-legume grass mixtures as more natural-like, and to increase the intensification of agricultural production, alfalfa crops should be used.

    Abstract The degradation of mangrove forests in the Konawe Selatan District has been very rapid over the past three decades. Increases in population growth in coastal areas have been associated with rapid development, including the need for land for housing and livelihood. This development has led to land conversion from mangrove forests to other uses. The aim of the research was to identify the pattern of spatial change of mangrove forests in South Konawe using a geospatial approach from 1984 to 2014. Landuse classification was generated through the processing of Landsat satellite imagery in multiple time series. The research showed that that between 1984 and 1993 in South Konawe District about 9.9% of mangrove forest was converted into open land, 2.3% into aquaculture ponds, and 0.4% into settlements. From 1993 to 2003, the rate of conversion increased rapidly as 13.8% of the remaining mangrove forest was cleared for aquaculture ponds and 1.5% into a settlement. Over the past three decades, 39.9% of mangrove forest in the district has been converted to other uses, and some of this conversion has occurred in protected areas. It’s recommended that the stronger enforcement of regulations pertaining to the protection of mangrove forests in South Konawe.

    Abstract The paper presents results of the analysis of the land use map compiled for transboundary Lake Khanka Basin using remote sensing data and geoinformation systems. The map reflects the distribution of 12 land categories in Lake Khanka basin in 2017 (arable land, abandoned arable land, paddy field, abandoned paddy field, shrubs and sparse growth, forest land, open pit, settlements, meadows and pastures, wet meadows and marshes, water bodies, forest cuttings and fire sites). The data of land use structure in the whole Lake’s watershed, in its Russian and Chinese parts are given. Data on the distribution of different land categories in the administrative territories of the rank of districts (Russia) and counties (China) are also presented. The analysis of land use structure showed that about 50 % of the Chinese part of the basin is covered by anthropogenically transformed natural complexes. The share of such lands in the territory of Russia amounts to 28 %. Agriculture is the most important factor in the change of natural complexes in Lake Khanka basin. Before early 1990s, the area of farmland had increased in the basin on both sides of the border, after that there was a significant reduction in cultivated lands, which had lasted for 10 years in the territory of China and for 20 years in Russia. Over the past decade, the area of cultivated areas in the basin and adjacent territories has extended again, which indicates an increase of anthropogenic impact and requires serious attention to monitoring of the ecological state of lands in the basin.

    Abstract Student social connectedness is indicated to be changing as universities are becoming more digitalised. Although social connectedness is shown to have a significant influence on the learning process, little is understood about the relationship between student social connectedness and the hybrid university learning environment (HULE). This empirical study aims to develop understandings by exploring student social connectedness in a hybrid-style class at a Swiss university. The study applies theories of placemaking and socio-materiality to explore students’ self-reported and observed perceptions of individual social connectedness at the start of a university master’s level course. The qualitative study is conducted using questionnaire data and observational data collected over the first month of a new course starting in the Autumn semester. The findings indicate that although students favour flexibility to design their learning space, they require the appropriate tools and guidance in which to make effective decisions for their social connectedness. Understanding the correct implementation of co-design for the HULE is therefore deemed important to facilitate social connectedness, this is particularly necessary for the liminal space. These findings are preliminary as part of a larger research project and offer a basis for further research to be developed. This study offers an innovative perspective of the HULE based on student social connectedness, impacting the existing pedagogical approach for university courses.

    Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic led to an acceleration of digitalisation in healthcare institutions, not only in the medical field but also within non-medical, which includes facility management (FM). FM organisations are increasingly confronted with the need to digitally transform their operations and to implement new digital technologies. This paper aims at providing scholars and professionals with an overview of the various digital technologies and systems that are relevant in shaping the digital transformation. An integrative literature review has been chosen, as it provides a systematic approach to map, collate and report on key findings and concepts from the literature for researchers and practitioners. Overall, 33 articles were systematically reviewed. 22 different digital technologies and systems were identified in the literature and were added to so-called technology clusters. From all the described technologies, Building Information Modelling (BIM) is most prominently cited. Furthermore, Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), Digital Twins (DT), and Blockchain technologies are commonly found. Additional technologies and systems mentioned in the literature, though not further detailed, were also added within a separate cluster. This study also discusses the implications for the digital transformation which is important when introducing novel digital technologies in healthcare organisations. It is argued that FM in healthcare needs to focus on integrating technologies, both at a technological level, and particularly at an organisational and interorganisational level.

    Abstract Rock mass characterization is a very important part of engineering geological investigation. For a better understanding of the rock mass behaviour, it is crucially important to obtain as much as possible information about the discontinuity network, especially about orientation and the number of dominant discontinuity sets. The traditional methodology includes field mapping which dominantly produces a limited amount of data and consequently only a rough estimate about discontinuity network. To increase the number of measurements and to eliminate orientation bias, rock mass on the Špičunak rock slope in Gorski kotar, Croatia, was analysed using a combination of 3D Point Cloud and Textured Mesh Model generated from 3D Point Cloud by Poisson surface reconstruction. Both models were obtained from Terrestrial Laser Scanning. Two considerably different parts of a rock slope, with different weathering conditions and different degrees of fracturing were mapped. Discontinuities were mapped in the field and on the models using manual mapping techniques and semi-automated methods. Manual mapping on a 3D Point Cloud and Textured Mesh Model was done by Compass plugin and by Trace a polyline tool in Cloud Compare software version V2.12 and semi-automated mapping methods were done by Discontinuity Set Extractor and qFacet Fast Marching plugin for Cloud Compare software version V2.12. This study was used to show how the application of different methodologies, for the detection of geometric properties of discontinuities, influences the result. Statistical analyses were performed on the collected data to determine differences in the accuracy between the mapping techniques. Manual mapping on the 3D Point Cloud and high-resolution Textured Mesh Model showed good agreement with field measurements, apart from the higher number of discontinuities mapped by remote sensing methods. On the other hand, significant deviations were found between manual and semi-automated mapping techniques. Semiautomated methods did not correctly detect certain discontinuities, especially bedding planes that are perpendicular to a rock face. Also, semi-automated methods overestimate the number of discontinuity sets, especially in a highly weathered and highly fractured rock mass. These differences between methods can influence kinematic analysis results. Based on the results, an appropriate methodology was proposed to utilize the advantages of both manual and semiautomated methods. The proposed approach presents a powerful tool to accurately map and measure discontinuity orientation with results comparable to the field measurements.

    Abstract In a context of digitalization and increasing quality requirements, the building sector is facing an increasing level of complexity regarding its design process. This results in a growing number of involved actors from different domains, a multitude of tasks to be completed and a higher degree of needed expertise. New buildings are also required to reach higher performances in terms of environmental quality. To that regard, the exploitation of the full potential of digital tools can facilitate the integration of environmental aspects in the planning process, limit productivity shortcomings and reduce environmental impacts, which can result from an unaware decision making. Building environmental assessment can be performed through several Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)-based tools. “Pure calculation” tools quantify final buildings’ environmental potential, while “complex tools” additionally support decision making during the planning process. It is often difficult to choose the best suitable tool, which strongly depends on the user’s needs. Within the IEA EBC Annex 72, a survey was realized with the main objective of creating a comprehensive overview of the existing tools dedicated to buildings LCA. The questionnaire included the usability, functionality, compliance, data reliability and interoperability of the analysed tools. Lastly, based on the survey outcomes and their critical assessment, a procedure for the identification and selection of a tool has been proposed based on user’s needs. As a result, this work outlines main features of currently available building LCA tools, for which there is a harmonized status in terms of usability and overall applied LCA methodology. Despite the need for more automatized workflows, tools’ embedding is mostly not yet applicable in system chains or limited to a restricted number of tools.

    Abstract The purpose of this work is to provide a framework for the vulnerability of traditional historical buildings. Buildings that are not constrained and do not have a design obligation for minor energy retrofit interventions. The digitization of the construction sector can help to design interventions with Digital Twin methodologies that can be integrated into a single document that collects them as the Digital Building Logbook. We propose a definition of an innovative workflow that defines integrations and technological innovations in the historical building stock. In this work are presented operational proposals to ensure and increase the protection and conservation of the Italian historical building stock, trying to strengthen the activities of designers and companies for the reduction of seismic vulnerability in case of maintenance or energy retrofit.

    Abstract Variations in soil structural and physiochemical properties can impact earth system models related to climate change. However, in most of the countries including Malaysia, soil data are available as low resolution and semi-detailed soil series maps, which hinder their applicability. Therefore, the objective of this study was to develop a framework to compare the conventional soil mapping with digital soil databases and to determine the accuracy of digital soil mapping. Kedah province located in the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia was selected as the study area. Observed soil (Cation exchange capacity – CEC, pH, organic matter as chemical and clay, sand and silt content as physical properties) data published by the Department of Agriculture, Malaysia was compared with SoilGrid (soillgrid.org) dataset. The depths of observed data were harmonised to international standard soil depths as; 0-5, 5-15, 15-30, s30-60, 60-100, and 100-200 cm using the equal quadratic spline approach. Global data were compared with harmonised 16 selected soil series data in Malaysia. Observed soil chemical properties (CEC, pH, and organic carbon) were within the range of SoilGrids data which allows the selected chemical properties to be used where observed data are limited or not available. In contrast, most of the soil physical properties from SoilGrids were not accurate when compared with the observed data. The developed framework in this study can be used to strengthen the accuracy of the available soil data in Earth system models, particularly those that are related to organic carbon and soil structural properties.

    Abstract This study aims to examine the determinants of environmental performance on the firms listed in the agriculture sector of the Indonesian Stock Exchange. The analysis technique uses multiple regressions to observe 67 firms listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange in the agriculture sector during 2016 – 2019. Furthermore, the independent variables consist of return on equity (ROE), firm age, size, leverage, and audit firm; and the dependent is environmental performance. The result shows that return on equity negatively affects environmental performance while firm age, size, and leverage have a positive effect. Furthermore, audit firm does not affect environmental performance in Indonesian Agricultural Firms. Therefore, firms with higher age, bigger sizes, and leverage will likely increase environmental performance even though profitability has decreased. Several factors such as firm age, size, leverage, and profitability should be considered to analyze environmental performance.

    Abstract In the farms of the Belgorod region, a comprehensive study was conducted to assess the productivity of perennial grasses using soil-saving technologies in comparison with traditional methods of tillage. The results of the dispersion analysis showed that the value of the indicator of the total aboveground and underground productivity of perennial grasses significantly depends on the species composition of the grass stand. It was found that the difference between the site of a perennial fallow and fields with perennial grasses with the use of soil-saving technologies did not exceed 13.9% in terms of the total aboveground productivity. The aboveground productivity of alfalfa was significantly higher than in the control variant (fallow field) and in the experimental fields with soil conservation technologies – by 73.6 % and 101.6 %, respectively. The accumulation of underground mass in the fallow area and in areas using soil conservation technologies is approximately at the same level – 1.91 kg*(m) − 2 in the control and 1.85-2.25 (average 2.04) kg*(m) − 2 in soil-saving crop rotations. At the same time, the Cv in the control variant was 15.78 %, and in grass mixtures, respectively, it was at the level of 16.47 %; 18.74 % and 18.08 %. In alfalfa crops, the accumulation of mass in the underground layer was inferior to the control variant by an average of 27.2 %, and to soil conservation technologies-by an average of 31.9 %. Alfalfa crops, providing greater aboveground productivity, are more intensive in terms of production, but less effective means of increasing the content of organic matter in the soil compared to cereal-legume grass mixtures. In soil conservation agriculture, it is necessary to use cereal-legume grass mixtures as more natural-like, and to increase the intensification of agricultural production, alfalfa crops should be used.

    Abstract The degradation of mangrove forests in the Konawe Selatan District has been very rapid over the past three decades. Increases in population growth in coastal areas have been associated with rapid development, including the need for land for housing and livelihood. This development has led to land conversion from mangrove forests to other uses. The aim of the research was to identify the pattern of spatial change of mangrove forests in South Konawe using a geospatial approach from 1984 to 2014. Landuse classification was generated through the processing of Landsat satellite imagery in multiple time series. The research showed that that between 1984 and 1993 in South Konawe District about 9.9% of mangrove forest was converted into open land, 2.3% into aquaculture ponds, and 0.4% into settlements. From 1993 to 2003, the rate of conversion increased rapidly as 13.8% of the remaining mangrove forest was cleared for aquaculture ponds and 1.5% into a settlement. Over the past three decades, 39.9% of mangrove forest in the district has been converted to other uses, and some of this conversion has occurred in protected areas. It’s recommended that the stronger enforcement of regulations pertaining to the protection of mangrove forests in South Konawe.

    Abstract The paper presents results of the analysis of the land use map compiled for transboundary Lake Khanka Basin using remote sensing data and geoinformation systems. The map reflects the distribution of 12 land categories in Lake Khanka basin in 2017 (arable land, abandoned arable land, paddy field, abandoned paddy field, shrubs and sparse growth, forest land, open pit, settlements, meadows and pastures, wet meadows and marshes, water bodies, forest cuttings and fire sites). The data of land use structure in the whole Lake’s watershed, in its Russian and Chinese parts are given. Data on the distribution of different land categories in the administrative territories of the rank of districts (Russia) and counties (China) are also presented. The analysis of land use structure showed that about 50 % of the Chinese part of the basin is covered by anthropogenically transformed natural complexes. The share of such lands in the territory of Russia amounts to 28 %. Agriculture is the most important factor in the change of natural complexes in Lake Khanka basin. Before early 1990s, the area of farmland had increased in the basin on both sides of the border, after that there was a significant reduction in cultivated lands, which had lasted for 10 years in the territory of China and for 20 years in Russia. Over the past decade, the area of cultivated areas in the basin and adjacent territories has extended again, which indicates an increase of anthropogenic impact and requires serious attention to monitoring of the ecological state of lands in the basin.
