Abstract Collective entrepreneurship has been found to alleviate extreme poverty by helping poor individuals integrate into their societies and overcome their multiple intertwined liabilities. We complement this line of inquiry by exploring the conditions under which group structures may instead reinforce economic and gendered poverty constraints. We conducted grounded-theoretical interviews with 104 women entrepreneurs operating in farming cooperatives and non-farm groups in war-torn South-West Cameroon. Analysing our data through a constitutive lens, we found that discipline, the extent to which rules determine and control individual behaviours, helps poor women overcome extreme economic constraints but prevents them from attaining prosperity and emancipation.

Este artigo visa abordar a questão da inclusão através do trabalho e num ambiente rural de pessoas com de ciência psíquica e/ou com de ciência intelectual. Através do exemplo de um estabelecimento de apoio e assistência ao trabalho, o estabelecimento de apoio e assistência ao trabalho Le Habert, localizado numa pequena aldeia rural e montanhosa nos Alpes e que oferece às pessoas com de ciência o trabalho numa quinta, o artigo abordará primeiro a importância do trabalho como meio para as pessoas recuperarem a sua dignidade. Entre o sentimento de utili- dade e orgulho em participar no funcionamento de um território, ao estar plenamente envolvido no processo de produção e valorização de um produto, o acompanhamento na quinta permite, para além destas virtudes terapêuticas, uma verdadeira inclusão pro ssional. Vivendo em casas ou apartamentos nas aldeias circundantes, o alojamento, permitindo o contacto entre pessoas com de ciência e habitantes locais, é também um vector de inclusão social. Contudo, se a rura- lidade, devido às oportunidades pro ssionais e sociais que oferece, pode ser um trunfo para a inclusão, o isolamento e a inacessibilidade geográ ca do ambiente rural montanhoso pode ser um obstáculo para as pessoas que não têm necessariamente os meios para serem móveis. Ao oferecer um apoio personalizado à mobilidade, a instituição transforma a exclusão geográ ca num bem para a inclusão pro ssional, social e espacial. This article proposes to address the issue of inclusion through work and in a rural environ- ment of people with mental disabilities and/or intellectual disabilities. Through the example of a French support and work assistance establishment, the support and work assistance establish- ment Le Habert, located in a small rural and mountainous village in the Alps and offering people with disabilities to work on a farm, the article will rst address the importance of work as a means for people to regain their dignity. Between the feeling of usefulness and pride in participating in the operation of one territory, by being fully involved in the process of producing and adding value to a product, accompanying the farm allows, apart from these therapeutic virtues, a real professional inclusion. Living in houses or apartments in the surrounding villages, the accommodation, allowing contact between people with disabilities and local inhabitants is also a vector of social inclusion. However, while the rural setting can be an asset for inclusion because of the professional and social opportunities, the isolation and geographical inaccessibility of the rural mountainous environment can be an obstacle for people who do not necessarily have the means to be mobile. By offering personalised support for mobility, the institution transforms geographical exclusion into an asset for professional, social and spatial inclusion.

Following the self-release of their Saturation album trilogy in 2017, American hip-hop group Brockhampton broke through to an international audience. The period of the trilogy’s release – known as “Saturation Season” – is notable for the large body of creative content the group produced and released online. In this article, the authors demonstrate how the group’s new media practices query the boundaries that separate amateurs and professionals, consumers and producers, and fans and artists, raising a range of questions concerning digitalization, (social) inclusion, and the democratization of culture. Farmers’ health compared to the general population has been the object of some studies and reviews. Among all factors implied in psychological and physical health, the farming system (i.e., organic or conventional farming) was identified as one of the relevant factors to investigate. This article aims to review the literature established on the comparison between organic and conventional farmers’ health and its correlates. Twenty-nine quantitative or qualitative articles were identified for inclusion (n = 29). Results showed that organic farmers had globally better psychological and physical health than conventional farmers. Effect sizes were small to large; they differed according to the target outcome. In addition, factors correlated with farmers’ health were usually psychological, social, financial, and agricultural. This review of literature encourages further research in this area, particularly on developing agricultural models. International audience

AbstractResearch in several Latin American countries points to violence, loss of traditional territories, and seeking education, health, and wage labor as key variables in triggering rural–urban migration among Indigenous people. This study presents an analysis of the migration patterns of Indigenous people in Brazil, compared to non-indigenous people, based on data from the most recent national census, conducted in 2010. Migration characteristics related to lifetime migration and recent migration were investigated by means of descriptive and multivariable logistic regression analyses. The findings pointed to complex mobility scenarios according to migrants’ Indigenous status and geographical regions of origin and destination. Indigenous people living in urban areas presented high levels of mobility (approximately 50% lived in different municipalities from those where they were born), which were more pronounced than those of non-Indigenous people. Indigenous people living in rural areas presented the lowest levels of migration (approximately 90% residing in their municipality of birth). Statistical modeling confirmed the patterns observed in descriptive analysis, highlighting the marked mobility of Indigenous subjects in urban areas. We emphasize the limitations of using census data for characterizing Indigenous mobility profiles, although no other nationally representative data are available. The finding that the Indigenous population living in urban areas presents rates of migration higher than their non-Indigenous counterparts is particularly important for the planning and implementation of a broad range of public policies aimed at ethnic minorities in the country, including health, education, and housing initiatives.

Abstract The alleviation of global poverty is a major objective of the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Goals (notably SDG1 “to end poverty in all its forms everywhere”). Many rural people experiencing poverty often rely on forests and tree-based systems, such as agroforestry, suggesting the existence of links between such systems and poverty outcomes. This paper reviews the evidence of such links across multiple dimensions of poverty and well-being, based on an expert panel convened by the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) and an extensive literature search. We consider whether, how, where, when, and for whom forests and trees in the wider landscape influence poverty dynamics. We organize the evidence according to four pathways through which forests and trees influence household poverty dynamics: 1) helping households move out of poverty; 2) maintaining well-being levels through subsistence, food security, health, and cultural and spiritual values; 3) preventing declines by mitigating risks and stabilizing consumption; 4) decreasing well-being by generating negative externalities that could trap or move households into poverty. We found that local context matters considerably, with the roles of forests and trees strongly varying across geographical, social, economic, and political settings. Another key finding is that evidence of forests and trees providing livelihood diversification and benefits that help households move out of poverty remains limited, based primarily on a small number of case studies. Evidence on the impact of gender gaps in relation to forest landscapes and poverty pathways is also lacking. However, our findings do suggest that ecosystem services provided by forests and trees play critical roles in maintaining well-being and food security and have the potential to contribute more to helping households move out of poverty and mitigating risks amplified by climate change. This review also highlights cautionary findings related to negative forest externalities that can maintain or move households into poverty. Together, these findings call for policy efforts to support the conservation and sustainable management of forest landscapes and agroforestry systems that are more targeted towards meeting the diverse needs of the rural poor. Our results also point to a need for greater effort to address gender disparities, which have been largely overlooked yet provide a critical opportunity to not only enhance gender equality but also advance sustainable poverty reduction goals.

International audience; Introduction: Epilepsy is a chronic disease of the brain that affects approximately 50 million people globally, with over 80 % of them living in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In Madagascar, as in most LMICs, one of the main obstacles to treatment is the stigma and discrimination experienced by patients. Beliefs and prejudices regarding this disease are common, especially among children. "Ao Tsara" is an educational comic book regarding epilepsy, which has been translated in Malagasy from a French version, and which objective is to raise awareness and fight epilepsy related stigma and discrimination. Comic books have indeed been used successfully to raise awareness and change behaviors in several areas of public health. Methods: We conducted a study to evaluate the effect of a single reading of this comic book on epilepsy related knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) in schoolchildren in Madagascar. This quasi-experimental study compared data collected before and immediately after reading "Ao Tsara". It was conducted both in a school in an urban area and in a school in a rural area. Results: We recruited 244 children with a mean age of 11.4 (±1.5) in this study. We noted a significant improvement in the global KAP score after reading the comic book, overall as well as both in the urban school and the rural school. Out of a maximum score of twenty, the global KAP score increased from 9.4 to 11.2 (p < 0.001). Although the increase in knowledge was reasonable (10.2-12.9, p < 0.001) and the corresponding subscore after reading the comic book was at a satisfactory level, that was not the case for attitudes & practices, where the sub-score despite a significant increase remained low (8.7-9.5 out of a maximum score of twenty, p < 0.001). The comic book was much appreciated by the children with more than 50.0 % giving it the top rating, and 66.4 % stating they had learned a lot from it. Conclusion: A single reading of the comic book has demonstrated a positive effect on the knowledge, attitudes and practices of primary school children in Madagascar. This educational tool, which was much enjoyed by the children, could be of great value to raise awareness about epilepsy in Madagascar. By targeting a slightly older age group and adjusting the reading approach, the outcomes could be optimized especially in terms of attitudes and practices.
