    A two-year study of pearl millet–groundnut cropping systems across two fertilizer levels was conducted in Maradi, Niger, in the Sahelian zone of West Africa. The objective of this study was to identify the best cropping system with and without fertilizer application. The experiment was conducted with ten treatment combinations of five pearl millet and groundnut cropping systems (pearl millet and groundnut sole crops, and three pearl millet—groundnut intercrops) and two fertilizer levels. Yields were approximately 300 kg ha−1 higher in the 2022 high rainfall year than in 2021, but the year did not interact with cropping systems or fertilizer application. All the intercropping systems had an LER above 1.0, and land use efficiency increased by 19 to 41%. Fertilizer application increased yields in all cropping systems by 200 to 600 kg ha−1. The government subsidy increased the value-to-cost ratio by 0.5 to 2.5 units and was required for the economic response for pearl millet sole and intercrops in 2022. The groundnut sole cropping system had the greatest economic response to fertilizer application. Based on the risky environment and multiple end uses needed by producers, the intercrop system M-G: 1:3:1 with fertilizer application is the best option to optimize pearl millet and groundnut production.

    Charcoal is used in Africa for household energy, and the sector involves different actors with specific business strategies. Based on theories on sustainable business models and livelihoods, charcoal traders in five cities in Niger were surveyed about supply chains and strategies. Most charcoal is imported from Nigeria, and smaller quantities come from Benin and Burkina Faso or domestically. Men dominate the trade. Customers value charcoal quality, tree species, packaging, and low prices. Three groups of traders and their business models were identified: small-scale retailers, large-scale retailers, and wholesalers. The charcoal trade is typically combined with trade in other products and is frequently conducted with family members or friends; laborers are employed for loading and unloading. The charcoal business provides a complementary income for the traders’ livelihoods. Most respondents believed that trade would increase in the future; wholesalers expected promising future business opportunities. This study concludes that improvements should focus on quality, better marketing skills, and more sustainable charcoal sourcing. Charcoal use in the Sahel region of Africa should also be studied further to enable the development of effective policies in the West African bioenergy sector. The cross-border charcoal trade creates a need for coordinated policies for a sustainable charcoal sector in the Sahel region.

    The use of neglected and underutilized species (NUS) in agrosystems is a potential solution to the challenges arising from global change. These species could contribute to the equitable diversification of agricultural systems. Providing knowledge on their genetic diversity and fostering access to data and results is essential for the development of strong collaborative future research. The study addressed these issues by assessing the diversity of the largest fonio (Digitaria exilis) collection existing to date.     The purpose of this paper is to analyze the effects of repeated floods in the city of Niamey and the strategies developed by the state in terms of prevention, rehabilitation, and care for victims. Although numerous framework documents have been drafted in the last decade and urbanization in flood zones has been limited, the reality in Niamey shows that urban sprawl is increasing along the riverbank and the population facing vulnerable situations is growing. The inefficiency of state action determines that, on the one hand, it is non-governmental institutions that need to develop improvement plans—with the recovery of the city being dependent on the arrival of their funds and their distribution in those areas that donor countries consider most suitable—and on the other hand, it is the citizens—already vulnerable—who must find their own resilience mechanisms to try to survive the next flood. This study reveals that this diversity of players is involved in flood management through emergency relief, solidarity in rehousing, and providing support for living and non-living flood victims. Despite this mobilization, the actions undertaken are hampered by a number of constraints. Insufficient financial and human resources, a lack of foresight on the part of the authorities, and poorly coordinated actions are the main difficulties limiting the success of public action in the face of flooding. Through a qualitative approach, combining documentary research, direct observation and semi-structured interviews, we analyze the mobilization of actors around the management of the effects of floods in Niamey.

    International audience; Agricultural drought is a complex phenomenon with numerous consequences and negative implications for agriculture and food systems. The Sahel is frequently affected by severe droughts, leading to significant losses in agricultural yields. Consequently, assessing vulnerability to agricultural drought is essential for strengthening early warning systems. The aim of this study is to develop a new multivariate agricultural drought vulnerability index (MADVI) that combines static and dynamic factors extracted from satellite data. First, pixel temporal regression from 1981 to 2021 was applied to climatic and biophysical covariates to determine the gradients of trend magnitudes. Second, principal component analysis was applied to groups of factors that indicate the same type of vulnerability to configure the basic equation of vulnerability to agricultural drought. Then, random forest (RF), K-nearest neighbours (KNN), support vector machine (SVM) and naïve Bayes (NB) were used to predict drought vulnerability classes using the 28 factors as inputs and 708 pts of randomly distributed class labels. The results showed statistical agreement between the predicted MADVI spatial variability and the reference model (R=0.86 for RF) and its statistical relationships with the vulnerability subcomponents, with an R=0.73 with exposure to climate risk, R=0.64 with the socioeconomic sensitivity index, R=0.6 with the biophysical sensitivity index and a relatively weak correlation (R=0.21) with the physiographic sensitivity index. The overall vulnerability situation in the watershed is 21.8% extreme, 10% very high, 16.8% high, 27.7% moderate, 22.2% low and 1.5% relatively low considering the cartographic results of the predicted vulnerability classes with SVM having the best performance (accuracy=0.96, Kappa=0.95). The study is the first approach that uses the gradients of magnitudes of satellite covariate anomaly trends in multivariate modelling of vulnerability to agricultural drought. It can be easily scaled up across the Sahel region to improve early warning measures related to the impacts of agricultural drought.

    This manuscript aims to develop a new multivariate composite index for monitoring agricultural drought. To achieve this, the AVHRR, VIIRS, CHIRPS data series over a period of 40 years, rainfall and crop yield data as references were used. Variables include parameters for vegetative stress (SVCI, PV, SMN), water stress (PCI, RDI, NRDI), and heat stress (SMT, TCI, STCI), and a new variable related to environmental conditions was calculated through a normalized rainfall efficiency index. Then, random forest algorithm was used to determine the weights of each component of the model by considering interannual fluctuations in cereal yields as an impact variable. The multivariate composite model was compared to the VHI, NVSWI and SPI-12 indices for validation. The results show a large spatiotemporal concordance between the MDCI and the validation indices with a maximum correlation of 0.95 with the VHI and a highly significant p value (< 2.2e-16). Validation of the MDCI model by SPI-12 shows a significantly higher statistically significant relationship than that observed between SPI and VHI and NVSWI. P value range from 3.531e-05 to 6.137e-06 with correlations that vary between 0.6 and 0.64 depending on the station. It is also highly correlated with the Palmer drought severity index (PDSI) and climatic water deficit index (CWDI), with R = 0.85 and p value < 5.8e-10 and R = 0.72 and p value < 1.9e-6, respectively. Finally, the study provides a new direction for multivariate modeling of agricultural drought that should be further explored under various agroclimatic conditions. International audience

    AbstractMany sub-Saharan farmers rely on agricultural production for home consumption and sell crops to meet their other needs. Farmers’ market intervention enhances economic expansion and helps to improve household food security. In our current study, we strive to explore the determinants of farmers’ decisions and the intensity of market participation in the Sahelian region of Niger, where little has been published, thereby filling the gap in the literature. A double hurdle approach was employed to achieve this objective using a sample collected from 1784 farm households in Niger.Our findings reveal that the total quantity of crops produced, gender, credit access, farming experience, training, drought, and assets positively impact household market participation significantly. Based on these results, as the quantity of crop sales is driven positively and significantly by the amount of crop produced, finding ways to increase crop production will increase household market participation. This can only be achieved by encouraging farmers to adopt high-yield crop varieties, such as climate-resilient ones, to boost productivity. Furthermore, considering the positive association between credit availability and smallholder market participation, any initiative in the agricultural sector that will bring efforts to supply credit and farm inputs to farmers will surely help to improve agricultural production and household market participation.

    Land degradation is a major issue in the Sahel region. Numerous investments have been made in implementing sustainable land management (SLM) actions to reverse land degradation. Our work aims to (i) describe the variety of degraded land reclamation actions (DLRAs) and (ii) map the stakeholders acting in Niger. A time series (2008-2021) of georeferenced public data was collected and organized using a harmonized nomenclature. The results show that about 279,074 ha could be analysed in our study. Dug structures are the most widespread technique, while treated land is mostly devoted to single agricultural or pastoral uses. DLRAs are unevenly distributed in the Niger. More than 100 stakeholders were part of the effort to restore degraded land in the country-some playing a specific role, while others, such as the Government of the Niger, were responsible for mobilizing funds for implementing sustainable land management programs, while also carrying out certain programmes of their own. Our study points out the added value of creating a geolocalized dataset and, in future, a spatialized database management system to (i) deploy targeted sustainable land management actions complementing past and ongoing actions and (ii) create synergy between all the stakeholders.     Climate–land interaction over West Africa has often been assessed using climate simulations, although the model-based approach suffers from the limitations of climate models for the region. In this paper, an alternative method based on the analysis of historical land cover data and standardized climatic indices is used to investigate climate–land interactions, in order to establish climatic conditions and their corresponding land cover area changes. The annual variation in land cover area changes and climatic changes are first estimated separately and then linked using various spatiotemporal scales. The results show that incidences of land cover change result from abrupt changes in climatic conditions. Interannual changes of −1.0–1.0 °C, 0–1.5 °C, and −0.5–0.5 °C, and up to ±50 mm changes in precipitation and climatic water balance, lead to 45,039–52,133 km2, 20,935–22,127 km2, and approximately 32,000 km2 changes, respectively, while a ±0.5 °C and ±20 mm change represents normal climate conditions with changes below 20,000 km2. Conversely, conversions of cropland, forest, grassland, and shrubland are the main land cover change types affecting the climate. The results offer a basis for the re-evaluation of land cover change and climate information used in regional climate models simulating land–climate interactions over West Africa.

    West Africa is the origin and epicenter of pearl millet genetic diversity. Niger is a standalone country that produces 3.5 million tons of pearl millet from an area of 6.7 million hectares, with productivity varying from 0.5 to 0.7 t/ha. Low grain yield is a result of low soil fertility, drought, downy mildew, head miner, and the non-utilization of improved and quality seeds. Around 30 pearl millet varieties were released in Niger, but the adoption rate of improved varieties is still lagging. There has been no systematic mapping implemented for new varieties’ adoption preferences and the availability of quality seeds. Considering this and assessing the need for biofortified cultivars, the present participatory study was conducted in the Dosso region of Niger, wherein high rates of malnutrition persist. This study aimed (i) to identify breeding priorities for key traits of pearl millet preferred by farmers, with gender-based segregation, for varieties and hybrids, and (ii) to survey the preference for biofortified varieties with added nutritional value. Structured questionnaires and focus groups were used to collect data from 150 randomly selected respondents in 12 villages from three representative departments of Dogondoutchi, Dosso, and Gaya. The results reveal that pearl millet is a primary staple crop grown (98% of respondents) and consumed on a daily basis as food and also used as feed for their animals. The majority of farmers preferred a long panicle (50.7%) and a good seed set (45.3%). For grain traits, a white color (50%) and larger size (100%) were predominantly preferred, which fetches them higher prices in the market, where they compete with sorghum grains. All respondents unanimously rated growing biofortified pearl millet varieties as high (100%), owing to higher Fe and Zn, in addition to yield. Furthermore, 99.3% of farmers perform grain decortication before consumption, thus potentially depleting staple grain nutrition, which is expedient for pearl millet biofortification in the region. This study has the potential for establishing pearl millet breeding priorities that are likely to be employed for other West African pearl millet breeding programs.

    A two-year study of pearl millet–groundnut cropping systems across two fertilizer levels was conducted in Maradi, Niger, in the Sahelian zone of West Africa. The objective of this study was to identify the best cropping system with and without fertilizer application. The experiment was conducted with ten treatment combinations of five pearl millet and groundnut cropping systems (pearl millet and groundnut sole crops, and three pearl millet—groundnut intercrops) and two fertilizer levels. Yields were approximately 300 kg ha−1 higher in the 2022 high rainfall year than in 2021, but the year did not interact with cropping systems or fertilizer application. All the intercropping systems had an LER above 1.0, and land use efficiency increased by 19 to 41%. Fertilizer application increased yields in all cropping systems by 200 to 600 kg ha−1. The government subsidy increased the value-to-cost ratio by 0.5 to 2.5 units and was required for the economic response for pearl millet sole and intercrops in 2022. The groundnut sole cropping system had the greatest economic response to fertilizer application. Based on the risky environment and multiple end uses needed by producers, the intercrop system M-G: 1:3:1 with fertilizer application is the best option to optimize pearl millet and groundnut production.

    Charcoal is used in Africa for household energy, and the sector involves different actors with specific business strategies. Based on theories on sustainable business models and livelihoods, charcoal traders in five cities in Niger were surveyed about supply chains and strategies. Most charcoal is imported from Nigeria, and smaller quantities come from Benin and Burkina Faso or domestically. Men dominate the trade. Customers value charcoal quality, tree species, packaging, and low prices. Three groups of traders and their business models were identified: small-scale retailers, large-scale retailers, and wholesalers. The charcoal trade is typically combined with trade in other products and is frequently conducted with family members or friends; laborers are employed for loading and unloading. The charcoal business provides a complementary income for the traders’ livelihoods. Most respondents believed that trade would increase in the future; wholesalers expected promising future business opportunities. This study concludes that improvements should focus on quality, better marketing skills, and more sustainable charcoal sourcing. Charcoal use in the Sahel region of Africa should also be studied further to enable the development of effective policies in the West African bioenergy sector. The cross-border charcoal trade creates a need for coordinated policies for a sustainable charcoal sector in the Sahel region.

    The use of neglected and underutilized species (NUS) in agrosystems is a potential solution to the challenges arising from global change. These species could contribute to the equitable diversification of agricultural systems. Providing knowledge on their genetic diversity and fostering access to data and results is essential for the development of strong collaborative future research. The study addressed these issues by assessing the diversity of the largest fonio (Digitaria exilis) collection existing to date.     The purpose of this paper is to analyze the effects of repeated floods in the city of Niamey and the strategies developed by the state in terms of prevention, rehabilitation, and care for victims. Although numerous framework documents have been drafted in the last decade and urbanization in flood zones has been limited, the reality in Niamey shows that urban sprawl is increasing along the riverbank and the population facing vulnerable situations is growing. The inefficiency of state action determines that, on the one hand, it is non-governmental institutions that need to develop improvement plans—with the recovery of the city being dependent on the arrival of their funds and their distribution in those areas that donor countries consider most suitable—and on the other hand, it is the citizens—already vulnerable—who must find their own resilience mechanisms to try to survive the next flood. This study reveals that this diversity of players is involved in flood management through emergency relief, solidarity in rehousing, and providing support for living and non-living flood victims. Despite this mobilization, the actions undertaken are hampered by a number of constraints. Insufficient financial and human resources, a lack of foresight on the part of the authorities, and poorly coordinated actions are the main difficulties limiting the success of public action in the face of flooding. Through a qualitative approach, combining documentary research, direct observation and semi-structured interviews, we analyze the mobilization of actors around the management of the effects of floods in Niamey.

    International audience; Agricultural drought is a complex phenomenon with numerous consequences and negative implications for agriculture and food systems. The Sahel is frequently affected by severe droughts, leading to significant losses in agricultural yields. Consequently, assessing vulnerability to agricultural drought is essential for strengthening early warning systems. The aim of this study is to develop a new multivariate agricultural drought vulnerability index (MADVI) that combines static and dynamic factors extracted from satellite data. First, pixel temporal regression from 1981 to 2021 was applied to climatic and biophysical covariates to determine the gradients of trend magnitudes. Second, principal component analysis was applied to groups of factors that indicate the same type of vulnerability to configure the basic equation of vulnerability to agricultural drought. Then, random forest (RF), K-nearest neighbours (KNN), support vector machine (SVM) and naïve Bayes (NB) were used to predict drought vulnerability classes using the 28 factors as inputs and 708 pts of randomly distributed class labels. The results showed statistical agreement between the predicted MADVI spatial variability and the reference model (R=0.86 for RF) and its statistical relationships with the vulnerability subcomponents, with an R=0.73 with exposure to climate risk, R=0.64 with the socioeconomic sensitivity index, R=0.6 with the biophysical sensitivity index and a relatively weak correlation (R=0.21) with the physiographic sensitivity index. The overall vulnerability situation in the watershed is 21.8% extreme, 10% very high, 16.8% high, 27.7% moderate, 22.2% low and 1.5% relatively low considering the cartographic results of the predicted vulnerability classes with SVM having the best performance (accuracy=0.96, Kappa=0.95). The study is the first approach that uses the gradients of magnitudes of satellite covariate anomaly trends in multivariate modelling of vulnerability to agricultural drought. It can be easily scaled up across the Sahel region to improve early warning measures related to the impacts of agricultural drought.

    This manuscript aims to develop a new multivariate composite index for monitoring agricultural drought. To achieve this, the AVHRR, VIIRS, CHIRPS data series over a period of 40 years, rainfall and crop yield data as references were used. Variables include parameters for vegetative stress (SVCI, PV, SMN), water stress (PCI, RDI, NRDI), and heat stress (SMT, TCI, STCI), and a new variable related to environmental conditions was calculated through a normalized rainfall efficiency index. Then, random forest algorithm was used to determine the weights of each component of the model by considering interannual fluctuations in cereal yields as an impact variable. The multivariate composite model was compared to the VHI, NVSWI and SPI-12 indices for validation. The results show a large spatiotemporal concordance between the MDCI and the validation indices with a maximum correlation of 0.95 with the VHI and a highly significant p value (< 2.2e-16). Validation of the MDCI model by SPI-12 shows a significantly higher statistically significant relationship than that observed between SPI and VHI and NVSWI. P value range from 3.531e-05 to 6.137e-06 with correlations that vary between 0.6 and 0.64 depending on the station. It is also highly correlated with the Palmer drought severity index (PDSI) and climatic water deficit index (CWDI), with R = 0.85 and p value < 5.8e-10 and R = 0.72 and p value < 1.9e-6, respectively.     AbstractMany sub-Saharan farmers rely on agricultural production for home consumption and sell crops to meet their other needs. Farmers’ market intervention enhances economic expansion and helps to improve household food security. In our current study, we strive to explore the determinants of farmers’ decisions and the intensity of market participation in the Sahelian region of Niger, where little has been published, thereby filling the gap in the literature. A double hurdle approach was employed to achieve this objective using a sample collected from 1784 farm households in Niger.Our findings reveal that the total quantity of crops produced, gender, credit access, farming experience, training, drought, and assets positively impact household market participation significantly. Based on these results, as the quantity of crop sales is driven positively and significantly by the amount of crop produced, finding ways to increase crop production will increase household market participation. This can only be achieved by encouraging farmers to adopt high-yield crop varieties, such as climate-resilient ones, to boost productivity. Furthermore, considering the positive association between credit availability and smallholder market participation, any initiative in the agricultural sector that will bring efforts to supply credit and farm inputs to farmers will surely help to improve agricultural production and household market participation.

    Land degradation is a major issue in the Sahel region. Numerous investments have been made in implementing sustainable land management (SLM) actions to reverse land degradation. Our work aims to (i) describe the variety of degraded land reclamation actions (DLRAs) and (ii) map the stakeholders acting in Niger. A time series (2008-2021) of georeferenced public data was collected and organized using a harmonized nomenclature. The results show that about 279,074 ha could be analysed in our study. Dug structures are the most widespread technique, while treated land is mostly devoted to single agricultural or pastoral uses. DLRAs are unevenly distributed in the Niger. More than 100 stakeholders were part of the effort to restore degraded land in the country-some playing a specific role, while others, such as the Government of the Niger, were responsible for mobilizing funds for implementing sustainable land management programs, while also carrying out certain programmes of their own. Our study points out the added value of creating a geolocalized dataset and, in future, a spatialized database management system to (i) deploy targeted sustainable land management actions complementing past and ongoing actions and (ii) create synergy between all the stakeholders.     Climate–land interaction over West Africa has often been assessed using climate simulations, although the model-based approach suffers from the limitations of climate models for the region. In this paper, an alternative method based on the analysis of historical land cover data and standardized climatic indices is used to investigate climate–land interactions, in order to establish climatic conditions and their corresponding land cover area changes. The annual variation in land cover area changes and climatic changes are first estimated separately and then linked using various spatiotemporal scales. The results show that incidences of land cover change result from abrupt changes in climatic conditions. Interannual changes of −1.0–1.0 °C, 0–1.5 °C, and −0.5–0.5 °C, and up to ±50 mm changes in precipitation and climatic water balance, lead to 45,039–52,133 km2, 20,935–22,127 km2, and approximately 32,000 km2 changes, respectively, while a ±0.5 °C and ±20 mm change represents normal climate conditions with changes below 20,000 km2. Conversely, conversions of cropland, forest, grassland, and shrubland are the main land cover change types affecting the climate. The results offer a basis for the re-evaluation of land cover change and climate information used in regional climate models simulating land–climate interactions over West Africa.

    West Africa is the origin and epicenter of pearl millet genetic diversity. Niger is a standalone country that produces 3.5 million tons of pearl millet from an area of 6.7 million hectares, with productivity varying from 0.5 to 0.7 t/ha. Low grain yield is a result of low soil fertility, drought, downy mildew, head miner, and the non-utilization of improved and quality seeds. Around 30 pearl millet varieties were released in Niger, but the adoption rate of improved varieties is still lagging. There has been no systematic mapping implemented for new varieties’ adoption preferences and the availability of quality seeds. Considering this and assessing the need for biofortified cultivars, the present participatory study was conducted in the Dosso region of Niger, wherein high rates of malnutrition persist. This study aimed (i) to identify breeding priorities for key traits of pearl millet preferred by farmers, with gender-based segregation, for varieties and hybrids, and (ii) to survey the preference for biofortified varieties with added nutritional value. Structured questionnaires and focus groups were used to collect data from 150 randomly selected respondents in 12 villages from three representative departments of Dogondoutchi, Dosso, and Gaya. The results reveal that pearl millet is a primary staple crop grown (98% of respondents) and consumed on a daily basis as food and also used as feed for their animals. The majority of farmers preferred a long panicle (50.7%) and a good seed set (45.3%). For grain traits, a white color (50%) and larger size (100%) were predominantly preferred, which fetches them higher prices in the market, where they compete with sorghum grains. All respondents unanimously rated growing biofortified pearl millet varieties as high (100%), owing to higher Fe and Zn, in addition to yield. Furthermore, 99.3% of farmers perform grain decortication before consumption, thus potentially depleting staple grain nutrition, which is expedient for pearl millet biofortification in the region. This study has the potential for establishing pearl millet breeding priorities that are likely to be employed for other West African pearl millet breeding programs.
