    This article introduces a novel collaborative optimal motion planning framework for parallel aerial 3D printing. The proposed novel framework is efficiently capable of handling conflicts between the utilized Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), as they follow predefined paths, allowing for a seamless enhancement of aerial 3D printing capabilities by employing multiple UAVs to collaborate in a parallel printing process. The established approach ingeniously formulates UAVs’ motion planning as a multi-constraint optimization problem, ensuring minimal adjustments to their velocities within specified limits. This guarantees smooth and uninterrupted printing while preventing collisions and adhering to the requirements of aerial printing. To substantiate the effectiveness of our proposed motion planning algorithm, an extensive array of simulation studies have been undertaken, encompassing scenarios where multiple UAVs engage in the fabrication of diverse construction shapes. The overall novel concept is being extensively validated in simulations, while the obtained results promise for enhancing the viability and advancing the landscape of aerial additive manufacturing.     Localization algorithms that rely on 3D LiDAR scanners often encounter temporary failures due to various factors, such as sensor faults, dust particles, or drifting. These failures can result in a misalignment between the robot’s estimated pose and its actual position in the global map. To address this issue, the process of global re-localization becomes essential, as it involves accurately estimating the robot’s current pose within the given map. In this article, we propose a novel global re-localization framework that addresses the limitations of current algorithms heavily reliant on scan matching and direct point cloud feature extraction. Unlike most methods, our framework eliminates the need for an initial guess and provides multiple top-� candidates for selection, enhancing robustness and flexibility. Furthermore, we introduce an event-based re-localization trigger module, enabling autonomous robotic missions. Focusing on subterranean environments with low features, we leverage range image descriptors derived from 3D LiDAR scans to preserve depth information. Our approach enhances a state-of-the-art data-driven descriptor extraction framework for place recognition and orientation regression by incorporating a junction detection module that utilizes the descriptors for classification purposes.     This study aimed to investigate the potential of converting bio-based residues from industrial production of mushrooms and tomatoes into more valuable chemicals with antifungal properties using hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL). Liquid fractions were obtained from HTL of spent substrate of Agaricus bisporus (Lange) Imbach and Pleurotus ostreatus (jacq.) P. kumm., recomposted Agaricus bisporus spent substrate, and tomato residues. The quantitative 1H NMR spectroscopy analysis revealed that the HTL liquids of all residues contained antifungal constituents like phenols and organic acids. The HTL liquids at dilutions of 10 % were able to inhibit the fungi by over 80 %. Interestingly, the fungus P. ostreatus showed tolerance to these constituents as its growth was promoted at the lowest concentration of all the HTL liquids. The HTL liquids had lower ecotoxicity than the commercial wood preservative. These results suggest that the tested residues could be a promising source of preservative chemical constituents for the wood industry.

    Sleep is an essential activity that affects an individual’s health and ability to perform Activities of Daily Living (ADL). Inadequate sleep reduces cognitive capacity and leads to health-related issues such as cardiovascular diseases. Sleep disorders are more prevalent in older adults. Therefore, it is essential to recognize sleep patterns and support older adults and their caregivers. In our study, we collect data in real-world unconstrained and non-intrusive environments. This paper presents a novel sleep activity recognition method using motion sensors for recognizing nighttime and daytime sleep, which can further enable the development of insightful healthcare applications. The research objectives are to evaluate the application of using Multi-Armed Bandit methods to (i) learn normal sleep patterns, (ii) evaluate sleep quality, and (iii) detect anomalies in sleep activity for 11 elderly participants living in single-resident smart homes. We evaluate the performance of Thompson Sampling, Random Selection, and Upper Confidence Bound MAB methods. Thompson Sampling outperformed the other two methods. Our findings show most elderly participants slept between 6 and 8 hours with 85% sleep efficiency and up to 3 awakenings per night.

    Sustainable forestry requires efficient regeneration methods to ensure that new forests are established quickly. In Sweden, 99% of the planting is manual, but finding labor for this arduous work is difficult. An autonomous scarifying and planting machine with high precision, low environmental impact, and a good work environment would meet the needs of the forest industry. For two years, a collaborative group of researchers, manufacturers, and users (forest companies) has worked together on developing and testing a new concept for autonomous forest regeneration (Autoplant). The concept comprises several subsystems, i.e., regeneration and route planning, autonomous driving (path planning), new technology for forest regeneration with minimal environmental impact, automatic plant management, crane motion planning, detection of planting spots, and follow-up. The subsystems were tested separately and integrated together during a field test at a clearcut. The concept shows great potential, especially from an environmental perspective, with significantly reduced soil disturbances, from approximately 50% (the area proportion of the area disturbed by disc trenching) to less than 3%. The Autoplant project highlights the challenges and opportunities related to future development, e.g., the relation between machine cost and operating speed, sensor robustness in response to vibrations and weather, and precision in detecting the size and type of obstacles during autonomous driving and planting.     Due to unsustainable land management and climate change, floods have become more frequent and severe over the past few decades and the problem is exacerbated in urban environments. In the context of climate-proofing cities, the importance of nature-based solutions (NBSs), obtaining relevant outcomes in the form of ecosystem services, has been highlighted. Although the role of ecosystem services in building resilience against negative climate change effects is widely recognized and there is an identified need to better integrate ecosystem services into urban planning and design, this has proven difficult to operationalize. A critical limitation is that modeling is a time-consuming and costly exercise. The purpose is to roughly estimate the ecosystem service of water run-off mitigation through simplified, cost-effective, and user-friendly modelling at three nested biophysical scales, under four climate change scenarios. Using the Swedish city of Gothenburg as an example, we propose an approach for navigating NBS-oriented flooding adaptation strategies, by quantifying the ecosystem service of water run-off mitigation at three nested biophysical scales, under four climate change scenarios, hence, proposing an approach for how to navigate nature-based solutions in a multi-scale, social–ecological urban planning context against present and future flooding events. Our findings validate the effectiveness of employing an ecosystem service approach to better comprehend the significant climate change issue of flooding through user-friendly and cost-efficient modeling.

    Exploration of groundwater is an integral part of viable resource growth for society, economy, and irrigation. However, uncontrolled utilization is mainly reported in urban and industries due to the increasing demand for water in semi-arid and arid regions of the world. In the background, groundwater demarcation for potential areas is vital in meeting necessary demand. The current study applied an integrated method comprising the analytical hierarchy process (AHP), multiple influence factors (MIF), combined with a linear regression curve and observatory well data for groundwater prospects mapping. Thematic maps such as flow direction, flow accumulation, elevation map, land use land cover, slope, soil texture, hill shade, geomorphology, normalized vegetation index, and groundwater depth map were generated utilizing remote sensing techniques. The relative weight of each parameter was estimated and then assigned to major and minor parameters. Potential zones for groundwater were classified into five classes, namely very good, good, moderate, poor, and very poor, based on AHP and MIF methods. A spatially explicit sensitivity and uncertainty analysis method to a GIS-based multi-criteria groundwater potential zone model is presented in this research. The study addressed a flaw in the way groundwater potential mapping results are typically presented in GIS-based multi-criteria decision analysis studies, where discrete class outputs are used without any assessment of their certainty with respect to variations in criteria weighting, which is one of the main contributors to output uncertainty. The study region is categorized based on inferred results as very poor, poor, marginal, and very good in potential ground quality 3.04 km2 is considered extremely poor, 3.33 km2 is considered poor, 64.42 km2 is considered very good, and 85.84 km2 is considered marginal zones, which shows reliable and potential implementation. The outcomes of AHP and MIF were validated by linear regression curve and actual water table in a study area. The study results help to formulate the potential demarcation of groundwater zones for future sustainable planning and development of groundwater sources. This study may be helpful to provide a cost-effective solution to water resources crises. The current study finding may be helpful for decision-makers and administrative professionals for sustainable management of groundwater resources for present and future demands.     The Arctic region is warming at over twice the mean rate of the Northern Hemisphere and nearly four times faster than the globe since 1979. The local rate of warming is even higher in the European archipelago of Svalbard. This warming is transforming the terrestrial snow cover, which modulates surface energy exchanges with the atmosphere, accounts for most of the runoff in Arctic catchments and is also a transient reservoir of atmospherically deposited compounds, including pollutants. Improved observations, understanding and modelling of changes in Arctic snow cover are needed to anticipate the effects these changes will have on the Arctic climate, atmosphere, terrestrial ecosystems and socioeconomic factors. Svalbard has been an international hub of polar research for many decades and benefits from a well-developed science infrastructure. Here, we present an agenda for the future of snow research in Svalbard, jointly developed by a multidisciplinary community of experts. We review recent trends in snow research, identify key knowledge gaps, prioritize future research efforts and recommend supportive actions to advance our knowledge of present and future snow conditions pertaining to glacier mass balance, permafrost, surface hydrology, terrestrial ecology, the cycling and fate of atmospheric contaminants, and remote sensing of snow cover. This perspective piece addresses issues relevant to the circumpolar North and could be used as a template for other national or international Arctic research plans.

    Urban expansion leads to increasing water pollution, impacting both human health and ecosystems. This decline in water quality often stems from insufficient wastewater treatment, along with runoff from both urban and agricultural areas. Water quality degradation challenges our efforts for sustainable water management and hinders progress toward the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG6. Within aquatic environments, the hyporheic zone—the subsurface area where surface water and groundwater mix—plays a crucial role in facilitating pollutant turnover and overall aquatic health. Mixing between surface water and groundwater generates diverse microhabitats in the streambed with varying levels of oxygen, temperature, and chemical composition, which in turn allows diverse microbial communities to strive. The complexity of exchange flows within the hyporheic zone and associated turnover processes of pollutants and nutrients can only be assessed with detailed, cross-disciplinary data sets including data about hydrology, climatology, biogeochemistry, and the subsurface composition. However, integrated data sets of this kind are seldom available. As a result, the drivers behind pollutant dynamics in stream-aquifer systems are still not fully understood. Addressing this knowledge deficit, we present a comprehensive unique data set from an urban stream-aquifer system in Switzerland spanning over 6 months. Incorporating hydrometric, tracer, nutrient, microbial and organic micropollutant data, our data set can help to shed light on the intricate mechanisms governing hyporheic exchange flows, as well as nutrient and organic micropollutant cycling in urban environments.     Complex systems increasingly include embedded digital technologies that interact with and are constrained by physical components and systems. Although these systems play a central role in our society, they have only been scarcely addressed in contemporary research on digital transformation and the organization of innovation. This article explores the digital transformation in complex products and systems and its consequences for organizational design. A longitudinal study of avionics development since the 1950s uncovers the application of digital technologies, first as a sequence of initial experiments, followed by the use as add-on functionality, then as an integral part of achieving critical functionality in systems, and currently combining add-on and critical functionalities enabling generativity. The findings emphasize the evolution of the intricate relationships between the systems architecture and organizational approaches when digital technology enables and enforces increased complexity, expanded functionality, increased systems integration, and continuous development. These nested dependencies are accentuated by the complexity that has emerged beyond human cognition, where increasingly sophisticated boundary objects based on modeling, simulation, and data play an important role in the organizations ability. Boundary objects relate and decouple the multifacetted dynamic relation between organization and architecture. The results also extend existing perspectives on platform strategies by outlining the importance of generativity in combination with criticality control, rather than market control. Criticality control in combination with generativity has become imperative not least as generative digital technologies have become central in achieving critical properties such as safety.     This article introduces a novel collaborative optimal motion planning framework for parallel aerial 3D printing. The proposed novel framework is efficiently capable of handling conflicts between the utilized Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), as they follow predefined paths, allowing for a seamless enhancement of aerial 3D printing capabilities by employing multiple UAVs to collaborate in a parallel printing process. The established approach ingeniously formulates UAVs’ motion planning as a multi-constraint optimization problem, ensuring minimal adjustments to their velocities within specified limits. This guarantees smooth and uninterrupted printing while preventing collisions and adhering to the requirements of aerial printing. To substantiate the effectiveness of our proposed motion planning algorithm, an extensive array of simulation studies have been undertaken, encompassing scenarios where multiple UAVs engage in the fabrication of diverse construction shapes. The overall novel concept is being extensively validated in simulations, while the obtained results promise for enhancing the viability and advancing the landscape of aerial additive manufacturing.     Localization algorithms that rely on 3D LiDAR scanners often encounter temporary failures due to various factors, such as sensor faults, dust particles, or drifting. These failures can result in a misalignment between the robot’s estimated pose and its actual position in the global map. To address this issue, the process of global re-localization becomes essential, as it involves accurately estimating the robot’s current pose within the given map. In this article, we propose a novel global re-localization framework that addresses the limitations of current algorithms heavily reliant on scan matching and direct point cloud feature extraction. Unlike most methods, our framework eliminates the need for an initial guess and provides multiple top-� candidates for selection, enhancing robustness and flexibility. Furthermore, we introduce an event-based re-localization trigger module, enabling autonomous robotic missions. Focusing on subterranean environments with low features, we leverage range image descriptors derived from 3D LiDAR scans to preserve depth information. Our approach enhances a state-of-the-art data-driven descriptor extraction framework for place recognition and orientation regression by incorporating a junction detection module that utilizes the descriptors for classification purposes.     This study aimed to investigate the potential of converting bio-based residues from industrial production of mushrooms and tomatoes into more valuable chemicals with antifungal properties using hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL). Liquid fractions were obtained from HTL of spent substrate of Agaricus bisporus (Lange) Imbach and Pleurotus ostreatus (jacq.) P. kumm., recomposted Agaricus bisporus spent substrate, and tomato residues. The quantitative 1H NMR spectroscopy analysis revealed that the HTL liquids of all residues contained antifungal constituents like phenols and organic acids. The HTL liquids at dilutions of 10 % were able to inhibit the fungi by over 80 %. Interestingly, the fungus P. ostreatus showed tolerance to these constituents as its growth was promoted at the lowest concentration of all the HTL liquids. The HTL liquids had lower ecotoxicity than the commercial wood preservative. These results suggest that the tested residues could be a promising source of preservative chemical constituents for the wood industry.

    Sleep is an essential activity that affects an individual’s health and ability to perform Activities of Daily Living (ADL). Inadequate sleep reduces cognitive capacity and leads to health-related issues such as cardiovascular diseases. Sleep disorders are more prevalent in older adults. Therefore, it is essential to recognize sleep patterns and support older adults and their caregivers. In our study, we collect data in real-world unconstrained and non-intrusive environments. This paper presents a novel sleep activity recognition method using motion sensors for recognizing nighttime and daytime sleep, which can further enable the development of insightful healthcare applications. The research objectives are to evaluate the application of using Multi-Armed Bandit methods to (i) learn normal sleep patterns, (ii) evaluate sleep quality, and (iii) detect anomalies in sleep activity for 11 elderly participants living in single-resident smart homes. We evaluate the performance of Thompson Sampling, Random Selection, and Upper Confidence Bound MAB methods. Thompson Sampling outperformed the other two methods. Our findings show most elderly participants slept between 6 and 8 hours with 85% sleep efficiency and up to 3 awakenings per night.

    Sustainable forestry requires efficient regeneration methods to ensure that new forests are established quickly. In Sweden, 99% of the planting is manual, but finding labor for this arduous work is difficult. An autonomous scarifying and planting machine with high precision, low environmental impact, and a good work environment would meet the needs of the forest industry. For two years, a collaborative group of researchers, manufacturers, and users (forest companies) has worked together on developing and testing a new concept for autonomous forest regeneration (Autoplant). The concept comprises several subsystems, i.e., regeneration and route planning, autonomous driving (path planning), new technology for forest regeneration with minimal environmental impact, automatic plant management, crane motion planning, detection of planting spots, and follow-up. The subsystems were tested separately and integrated together during a field test at a clearcut. The concept shows great potential, especially from an environmental perspective, with significantly reduced soil disturbances, from approximately 50% (the area proportion of the area disturbed by disc trenching) to less than 3%. The Autoplant project highlights the challenges and opportunities related to future development, e.g., the relation between machine cost and operating speed, sensor robustness in response to vibrations and weather, and precision in detecting the size and type of obstacles during autonomous driving and planting.     Due to unsustainable land management and climate change, floods have become more frequent and severe over the past few decades and the problem is exacerbated in urban environments. In the context of climate-proofing cities, the importance of nature-based solutions (NBSs), obtaining relevant outcomes in the form of ecosystem services, has been highlighted. Although the role of ecosystem services in building resilience against negative climate change effects is widely recognized and there is an identified need to better integrate ecosystem services into urban planning and design, this has proven difficult to operationalize. A critical limitation is that modeling is a time-consuming and costly exercise. The purpose is to roughly estimate the ecosystem service of water run-off mitigation through simplified, cost-effective, and user-friendly modelling at three nested biophysical scales, under four climate change scenarios. Using the Swedish city of Gothenburg as an example, we propose an approach for navigating NBS-oriented flooding adaptation strategies, by quantifying the ecosystem service of water run-off mitigation at three nested biophysical scales, under four climate change scenarios, hence, proposing an approach for how to navigate nature-based solutions in a multi-scale, social–ecological urban planning context against present and future flooding events. Our findings validate the effectiveness of employing an ecosystem service approach to better comprehend the significant climate change issue of flooding through user-friendly and cost-efficient modeling.

    Exploration of groundwater is an integral part of viable resource growth for society, economy, and irrigation. However, uncontrolled utilization is mainly reported in urban and industries due to the increasing demand for water in semi-arid and arid regions of the world. In the background, groundwater demarcation for potential areas is vital in meeting necessary demand. The current study applied an integrated method comprising the analytical hierarchy process (AHP), multiple influence factors (MIF), combined with a linear regression curve and observatory well data for groundwater prospects mapping. Thematic maps such as flow direction, flow accumulation, elevation map, land use land cover, slope, soil texture, hill shade, geomorphology, normalized vegetation index, and groundwater depth map were generated utilizing remote sensing techniques. The relative weight of each parameter was estimated and then assigned to major and minor parameters. Potential zones for groundwater were classified into five classes, namely very good, good, moderate, poor, and very poor, based on AHP and MIF methods. A spatially explicit sensitivity and uncertainty analysis method to a GIS-based multi-criteria groundwater potential zone model is presented in this research. The study addressed a flaw in the way groundwater potential mapping results are typically presented in GIS-based multi-criteria decision analysis studies, where discrete class outputs are used without any assessment of their certainty with respect to variations in criteria weighting, which is one of the main contributors to output uncertainty. The study region is categorized based on inferred results as very poor, poor, marginal, and very good in potential ground quality 3.04 km2 is considered extremely poor, 3.33 km2 is considered poor, 64.42 km2 is considered very good, and 85.84 km2 is considered marginal zones, which shows reliable and potential implementation. The outcomes of AHP and MIF were validated by linear regression curve and actual water table in a study area. The study results help to formulate the potential demarcation of groundwater zones for future sustainable planning and development of groundwater sources. This study may be helpful to provide a cost-effective solution to water resources crises. The current study finding may be helpful for decision-makers and administrative professionals for sustainable management of groundwater resources for present and future demands.     The Arctic region is warming at over twice the mean rate of the Northern Hemisphere and nearly four times faster than the globe since 1979. The local rate of warming is even higher in the European archipelago of Svalbard. This warming is transforming the terrestrial snow cover, which modulates surface energy exchanges with the atmosphere, accounts for most of the runoff in Arctic catchments and is also a transient reservoir of atmospherically deposited compounds, including pollutants. Improved observations, understanding and modelling of changes in Arctic snow cover are needed to anticipate the effects these changes will have on the Arctic climate, atmosphere, terrestrial ecosystems and socioeconomic factors. Svalbard has been an international hub of polar research for many decades and benefits from a well-developed science infrastructure. Here, we present an agenda for the future of snow research in Svalbard, jointly developed by a multidisciplinary community of experts. We review recent trends in snow research, identify key knowledge gaps, prioritize future research efforts and recommend supportive actions to advance our knowledge of present and future snow conditions pertaining to glacier mass balance, permafrost, surface hydrology, terrestrial ecology, the cycling and fate of atmospheric contaminants, and remote sensing of snow cover. This perspective piece addresses issues relevant to the circumpolar North and could be used as a template for other national or international Arctic research plans.

    Urban expansion leads to increasing water pollution, impacting both human health and ecosystems. This decline in water quality often stems from insufficient wastewater treatment, along with runoff from both urban and agricultural areas. Water quality degradation challenges our efforts for sustainable water management and hinders progress toward the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG6. Within aquatic environments, the hyporheic zone—the subsurface area where surface water and groundwater mix—plays a crucial role in facilitating pollutant turnover and overall aquatic health. Mixing between surface water and groundwater generates diverse microhabitats in the streambed with varying levels of oxygen, temperature, and chemical composition, which in turn allows diverse microbial communities to strive. The complexity of exchange flows within the hyporheic zone and associated turnover processes of pollutants and nutrients can only be assessed with detailed, cross-disciplinary data sets including data about hydrology, climatology, biogeochemistry, and the subsurface composition. However, integrated data sets of this kind are seldom available. As a result, the drivers behind pollutant dynamics in stream-aquifer systems are still not fully understood. Addressing this knowledge deficit, we present a comprehensive unique data set from an urban stream-aquifer system in Switzerland spanning over 6 months. Incorporating hydrometric, tracer, nutrient, microbial and organic micropollutant data, our data set can help to shed light on the intricate mechanisms governing hyporheic exchange flows, as well as nutrient and organic micropollutant cycling in urban environments.     Complex systems increasingly include embedded digital technologies that interact with and are constrained by physical components and systems. Although these systems play a central role in our society, they have only been scarcely addressed in contemporary research on digital transformation and the organization of innovation. This article explores the digital transformation in complex products and systems and its consequences for organizational design. A longitudinal study of avionics development since the 1950s uncovers the application of digital technologies, first as a sequence of initial experiments, followed by the use as add-on functionality, then as an integral part of achieving critical functionality in systems, and currently combining add-on and critical functionalities enabling generativity. The findings emphasize the evolution of the intricate relationships between the systems architecture and organizational approaches when digital technology enables and enforces increased complexity, expanded functionality, increased systems integration, and continuous development. These nested dependencies are accentuated by the complexity that has emerged beyond human cognition, where increasingly sophisticated boundary objects based on modeling, simulation, and data play an important role in the organizations ability. Boundary objects relate and decouple the multifacetted dynamic relation between organization and architecture. The results also extend existing perspectives on platform strategies by outlining the importance of generativity in combination with criticality control, rather than market control. Criticality control in combination with generativity has become imperative not least as generative digital technologies have become central in achieving critical properties such as safety.
