In this paper, we assessed separability rate of various polarimetric features in three frequencies of X-, C-, and L- bands. To this end, Jeffries–Matusita distance was firstly used to measure separability of each polarimetric feature in each frequency band. Random Forest classifier was then applied to map various land cover classes in study area. The classification outputs indicated that C-band results were better and more reliable than L-band results and L-band results were subsequently better than X-band results. These results were perfectly compatible with the results obtained by the separability analysis of multifrequency PolSAR features.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2016Publisher:Informa UK Limited Authors: Farjami, Hossein; Golubkin, Pavel; Chapron, Bertrand;Farjami, Hossein; Golubkin, Pavel; Chapron, Bertrand;ABSTRACTIn this study, nadir altimeter radar measurements are used to improve wind speed and sea state information in coastal regions, more precisely the north Indian Ocean. A methodology is suggested to combine the Ku- and C-band radar measurements, their difference, the measured significant wave height (HS) parameter and its along-track gradient. A dimensionless HS is used to recover empirical dependencies for fetch-limited wind wave development in this coastal region. As obtained, these simultaneous measurements can be efficiently combined to more precisely separate wind-related short-scale wave contributions from large-scale wave components, related to the local sea state degree of development. As demonstrated, this development helps to gain valuable insights concerning the use of altimeter measurements in coastal regions.

SAR data acquired by the X-band German TerraSAR-X satellite in the Uzgen region, southwestern Kyrgyzstan, are analysed for landslide detection and monitoring, and the results are compared with field observations and optical remote sensing data. X-band interferograms show several features indicative of areas of active slope movement coinciding with areas of previously mapped landslides in the region. InSAR time-series analysis provides an opportunity for continuous and efficient monitoring of ground deformation associated with landslides for large areas, complementing results from field mapping and the interpretation of optical data with the goal of establishing landslide inventories.

The presented methods include forward modelling and cross-checks of 2D correlation plots. In the forward modelling, it is taken into account that the in situ data are not error free. To increase the predictive power of PROSAIL, a simple and fully automatic feature selection (FS) algorithm is presented identifying and discarding poorly modelled wavebands, yielding more reliable parameter retrievals.
