    Defence proteins are a kind of chemical defence compounds. They play a key role in plant restraining biotic and abiotic harm. To illuminate activities of some defense proteins associated with age or plant family of larch, the larch needles were collected from two different families of Korean larch, Larix olgensis and a hybrid larch, L. kaempferi × L. gmelinii, respectively, and then the activities of defence proteins in those were tested using a UV spectrophotometry. The results showed that the activities of protective enzymes at the16-/17- and 19-year-age groups were higher than those at the other age groups in the both larch species. While the activities of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) at the 16-/17-year-age group and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) and protease inhibitors at the 19-year-age group were the highest among all age groups. Then, compared with L. olgensis, the hybrid larch had significant effects on the activities of protective enzymes. The effects of plant family on the activities of PAL and chymotrypsin inhibitor were significantly different, and then those on the activities of PPO were not significantly different. The effects of the two families in L. olgensis on the activities of trypsin inhibitor (TI) were significantly different, while those in the hybrid larch on the activities of TI were contrary. To conclusions showed that the different age and plant family significantly affected the activities of defence proteins in the needles of two larch species, and then enhanced the larch resistance to pests. These could play a key function in forestry tree genetic improvement and management in future.

    Madhuca latifolia Macb. commonly known as Indian butter tree, is an open-pollinated plant. Improvement in seed and oil yields depends on the progress in the desired characters in the base material and the genetic variability available in the collected germplasm. We evaluated 23 genotypes of M. latifolia to understand genetic variability, character association and divergence in seed traits and oil content for use in breeding programs. Variation was recorded in seed length (27.3–38.6 mm), seed breadth (15.6–19.1 mm), two dimensional (2D) surface area (328.3–495.4 mm2), 100 seed weight (216.8–285.3 g), acid value (13.4–25.8 mg KOH/g), iodine number (62.4–78.6) and oil content (37.8–51.0 %). High estimates of genotypic coefficient of variation, broad sense heritability and genetic gain were observed for seed oil content. Variability studies for seed traits revealed that genotype CPT-16 had the highest 100-seed weight (281.5 g) and oil content (51 %). Highly significant genotypic and phenotypic correlations were observed. The 100-seed weight was positively and significantly correlated with oil content at both phenotypic (r = 0.57) and genotypic (r = 0.60) levels. Cluster analysis of the scores of the first three principle components (80.83 %) resulted in four clusters, consisting of 4, 7, 3 and 9 genotypes in the first, second, third and fourth clusters, respectively. Cluster 3 was distinguished from others based on significantly higher means for most seed traits except seed breadth, acid value, iodine number and oil content. Cluster 1 appeared more divergent as it had significantly higher means for acid value and iodine number. A comparative assessment of means of the four clusters for 100-seed weight and oil content suggested that cluster 3 would be useful for higher 100-seed weight and oil content. Hence these genotypes, CPT-3, CPT-6 and CPT-15 in cluster 3 can be used for direct selection and utilization in breeding programs.

    Uluguru forests are globally recognized as important biodiversity hotspots, but anthropogenic pressure threatens their value. This study examined species diversity, abundance, and structure of trees in the Uluguru forests. All trees of diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥ 10 cm were inventoried in seven forests ranging from 3 to 995 ha in area. A total of 900 stems, 101 species and 34 families were inventoried. Fabaceae was the most speciose family. Ehretia amoena Klotzsch was the most abundant species with relative abundance of 9.22 %. The forests differed significantly in species richness (26–93 species ha−1), tree density (85–390 stems ha−1), basal area (3–24 m2 ha−1) and Shannon-Wiener diversity (2.50–4.02). Forest area was significantly and positively correlated with species richness (r = 0.92) and species diversity (r = 0.95). Tree density showed significant positive correlation with species richness (r = 0.80) and basal area (r = 0.85). Milawilila and Nemele forests had highest floristic similarity (0.55) followed by Kimboza and Kilengwe (0.54) while the rest had similarity coefficients of less than 0.50. Despite legislative protection, many forests remain at risk and therefore the possibility to conserve highly valuable tree species via enhanced protection or cultivation must be considered.

    We describe patterns of buttress formation and development in eleven tree species at Lawachara National Park, Bangladesh. Forty-five percent of trees of these 11 species had buttresses. Artocarpus chaplasha Roxb. showed maximum (87%) buttress formation, whereas Alstonia scholaris (L.) R. Br. did not show any buttress. Buttresses were recorded in 20%–40% of trees of six species and 40%–60% of trees in three species. Mean length and height of buttress varied among the species and ranged from 0.37–1.37 m and 0.71–2.13 m, respectively. Buttress height, mean buttress length, total buttress length, and total length plus length of secondaries increased with DBH (diameter at breast height) and tree height. Buttress number did not increase with DBH or tree height. Under-storey and mid-canopy trees produced less developed buttresses than did emergent trees (p<0.01). Wood density showed moderate effects on buttress characters (p<0.05), while the slope of the land did not. Canopy category was a primary regulating factor for tree buttressing, suggesting that buttresses are mechanical adaptations of trees to counter physical stresses.

    The major goal for long-term poplar breeding can be formulated as maximizing annual progress in Group Merit Gain at a given annual budget (GMG/Y*). To evaluate different breeding scenarios, a deterministic simulator BREEDING CYCLE ANALYZER covering the most important aspects (gain, cost, time, technique, and gene diversity) of a full breeding cycle was used. The breeding strategies considered was based on pairwise crossing of the selected breeding population and balanced within family selection for the next breeding population. A main scenario and a number of alternative scenarios within these constraints were evaluated using estimates of the best available inputs for poplars. In focus was a comparison between three different testing scenarios for selecting the parents mated to create future breeding generations, thus selecting based on phenotype, clone test or progeny test. For the main scenario, the highestGMG/Y, and the optimal selection age for clone, phenotype and progeny strategies were 0.7480%, 0.6989% and 0.4675%; 7, 6, and 11 years respectively. Clone test was best except when heritability was high, plant price was high or total budget was low; phenotype strategy was the second except for the case of extremely low narrow-sense heritability, for which the progeny strategy was a little more efficient than phenotype strategy.GMG/Y was markedly affected by narrow-sense heritability, additive variance at mature age, rotation age, plant-dependent cost, total budget and the time needed to produce the test plants, while diversity loss and recombination cost had rather weak effect onGMG/Y. Short rotation age and cheap testing cost favoured all three testing strategies. Comparably short rotation age, low plant-dependent cost and high total budget seem to promote early selection for progeny strategy.

    Pinus radiata D. Don, native to a California coastal environment, has been introduced to many parts of the world as an exotic species for afforestation. It is now a major plantation species in the Southern Hemisphere. In 1990, it was introduced to the heavily degraded, dry Min river valley area in Aba prefecture of Sichuan Prevince, P. R. China. Survival and growth of young trees planted st several sites appear to be reasonable. This review is to serve as an introduction to the large body of literature onP. radiata for forest scientists in Chine. It convers the following aspects:P. radiata in its native environment and in ex situ plantations, provenance and genetic variations, environmental limitations and climate niche, diseases and pests, lessons from unsuccessful introductions, and the use ofP. radiata for ecological restoration. The early growth ofP. radiata planted in the dry river valley area is briefly described. Potential problems associated with the introduction ofP. radiata in Aba and future research needs are also identified.

    Authors: Károly Rédei;

    Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) was the first forest tree species to be, imported from North America to Europe at the beginning of the 17th century. It is the most important fast-growing stand-forming tree species in Hungary. Black locust plantations can be successfully established in response to a range of economic and ecological opportunities. Plantation survival and productivity are maximized by matching the species’ growth characteristics with silvicultural options and land management needs. In the paper the sequence of forest tending operations in black locust stands is proposed, based on results of long-term stand structure and forest yield trials. Implementing good silvicultural plans and models will lead to profitable black locust stands and greater acceptance of the species by land managers. Black locust would also be a very useful species for energy productions as the related research results have been shown in the paper.

    Authors: Károly Rédei;

    The paper deals with the stand structure and yield of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) forests mixed with white (Populus alba L.) in various proportions, partly applying a new methodological approach. The main stand structure and yield factors were determined separately for each species, measured stem by stem, using the volume functions prepared for each species. The ratio of the volumes of the species (A and B) in mixed and in pure stands (based on volume tables) was determined. A close relationship has been found between the ratio by relative total volume and the proportion (by the number of stems) of the species. The relative surplus in the volume of the mixed stands varied between 1.24–1.55 at the age of 16 compared to the control, i.e. the yield of pure stands of the species concerned. The trial has also proven that if two species have a fast initial growth rate and a similar rotation age, they can be planted in mixed stands resulting in mutual advantages.

    The survey of seed dispersal ofRhodiola sachalinensis was carried out in Changbai Mountain in 1997. It was discovered that the dispersal of seed is not equal in all directions, but concentrates in the East and North to the cluster.Rh. sachalinensis seeds for germination test were collected from Changbai Mountains area (Antu County, Jilin Province) and Dahailin Migrating Conservation Base (Dahailing Forestry Bureau, Heilongjiang Province). The seeds were treated with 2% KNO3 for 10h and 0.02% GA3 for 5h immediately after the collection. The germinating rate (85.33%) of the seeds from Dahailin was obviously higher than that (72.66%) from Changbai Mountains. After being stored at 0–5°C for 10 months, the seeds were treated again with the same concentration of hormone mentioned above for germination test. The experimental results showed that there was almost no difference in germinating rate between newly collected seeds and 10-month storage seeds, which indicated that low-temperature storage can extend the life of seeds, and that the germinating rate increases with increasing of hormone concentration.

    Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) is one of the most important stand-forming tree species in Hungary and its importance is increasing in many countries. Black locust plants are commonly produced by two methods, by seed and by root cuttings. Tissue culture propagation can be considered as a relatively new method. Growing trees from seed is a relatively simple method for reliably producing seedlings on a large scale under a variety of circumstances. Mechanization of the method is easy and the production cost is relatively low. Propagation from root cuttings and tissue culture are valuable for reproduction of superior individuals or varieties. By applying these methods, superior traits of the selected trees can be preserved in the clones. Recent experiments demonstrated that micropropagated trees could be successfully transplanted into soil, hardened and grown in the field.

    Authors: Károly Rédei;
