Groundwater is an important source of freshwater. At the same time, anthropogenic activities, in particular, industrialization, urbanization, population growth, and excessive application of fertilizers, are some of the major reasons for groundwater quality deterioration. Therefore, the present study is conducted to evaluate groundwater quality by using integrated water quality indices and a geospatial approach to identify the different water quality zones and propose management strategies for the improvement of groundwater quality. Groundwater quality was evaluated through the physicochemical parameters (pH, chloride (Cl−), fluoride(F−), iron (Fe−2), nitrate (NO3−1), nitrite (NO2), arsenic (As), total hardness, bicarbonate (HCO3−), calcium (Ca+2), magnesium (Mg+2), color, taste, turbidity, total dissolved solids (TDS)) and microbiological parameters including total coliforms, fecal coliforms, and Escherichia coli of samples collected from the water and sanitation agency (WASA) and urban units. Irrigation parameters crucial to the assessment, including (electrical conductivity (EC), residual sodium carbonates (RSC), and sodium adsorption ratio (SAR)), were also collected at more than 1100 sites within the study area of upper and central Punjab. After collecting the data of physicochemical parameters, the analysis of data was initiated to compute the water quality index for groundwater quality, a four-step protocol in which the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used to determine the weights of selected parameters by generating a pairwise matrix, on the relative importance of parameters using the Satty scale. The index was then classified into five classes for quality assessment of drinking water (excellent, good, medium, bad, and very bad) and four classes for irrigation water quality assessment (excellent, good, permissible, and unsuitable). After computing the index values for drinking as well as irrigation purposes, the values were interpolated, and various maps were developed to identify the status of groundwater quality in different zones of the study area. Mitigation strategies for water pollution involve source control, such as monitoring industrial discharge points and managing waste properly. Additionally, treating wastewater through primary, secondary, or tertiary stages significantly improves water quality, reducing contaminants like heavy metals, microbiological agents, and chemical ions, safeguarding water resources. The findings highlight significant regional variations in water quality issues, with heavy metal concerns concentrated notably in Lahore and widespread emerging microbiological contamination across all studied divisions. This suggests a systemic problem linked to untreated industrial effluents and poorly managed sewerage systems. The computed indices for the Lahore, Sargodha, and Rawalpindi divisions indicate water quality ranging from marginal to unfit, underscoring the urgency for remediation. Conversely, other divisions fall within a medium class, potentially suitable for drinking purposes. Notably, microbiological contamination at 27% poses a major challenge for water supply agencies, emphasizing the critical need for pre-disposal primary, secondary, and tertiary treatments. These treatments could potentially rehabilitate 9%, 35%, and 41% of the study area, respectively, pointing toward tangible, scalable solutions critical for safeguarding broader water resources and public health. With the current pace of water quality deterioration, access to drinking water is a major problem for the public. The government should prioritize implementing strict monitoring mechanisms for industrial effluent discharge, emphasizing proper waste management to curb groundwater contamination. Establishing comprehensive pre-disposal treatments, especially primary, secondary, and tertiary stages, is imperative to address the prevalent heavy metal and microbiological issues, potentially rehabilitating up to 41% of affected areas. Additionally, creating proactive policies and allocating resources for sustainable groundwater management are crucial steps for ensuring broader water resource security and public health in the face of deteriorating water quality. Therefore, urgent regional action is needed to address escalating anthropogenic threats to groundwater, emphasizing the crucial need for proactive measures to safeguard public health and ensure sustainable water resources.

AbstractGreen nanotechnology, an emerging field, offers economic and social benefits while minimizing environmental impact. Nanoparticles, pivotal in medicine, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture, are now sourced from green plants and microorganisms, overcoming limitations of chemically synthesized ones. In agriculture, these green‐made nanoparticles find use in fertilizers, insecticides, pesticides, and fungicides. Nanofertilizers curtail mineral losses, bolster yields, and foster agricultural progress. Their biological production, preferred for environmental friendliness and high purity, is cost‐effective and efficient. Biosensors aid early disease detection, ensuring food security and sustainable farming by reducing excessive pesticide use. This eco‐friendly approach harnesses natural phytochemicals to boost crop productivity. This review highlights recent strides in green nanotechnology, showcasing how green‐synthesized nanomaterials elevate crop quality, combat plant pathogens, and manage diseases and stress. These advancements pave the way for sustainable crop production systems in the future.

Site-specific measurements of the crop yield during harvesting are essential for successfully implementing precision management techniques. This study aimed to estimate the mass of radish tubers using the impact principle under simulated vibration and sloped-field harvesting conditions with a laboratory test bench. These conditions included the conveyor speed (CS), impact plate layout (IP), falling height onto the impact plate (FH), the plate angle relative to the horizontal (PH), the field slope, and the vibration of the harvesting machine. Two layouts of impact-type sensors were fabricated and tested, one with a single load cell (SL) and the other with two load cells (DL). An adjustable slope platform and a vibration table equipped with vibration blades were utilized to simulate the slope and vibration effects, respectively. Calibrations were conducted to verify the accuracy of the sensor outputs, processed with the finite impulse response and moving average filters. Radish mass was estimated using an asymmetrically trimmed mean method. The relative percentage error (RE), standard error (SE), coefficient of determination (R²), and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to assess the impact plate performance. The results indicated that the SE for both impact plates was less than 4 g in the absence of vibration and slope conditions. The R2 for the single and double impact plates ranged from 0.58 to 0.89 and 0.69 to 0.81, respectively. The FH had no significant impact, while the PH significantly affected the mass measurements for both impact plates. On the other hand, the CS significantly affected the plate performance, except for the double-load-cell impact plate. Both vibration and slope affected the mass measurements, with RE values of 9.89% and 13.92%, respectively. The RE for filtered radish signals was reduced from 9.13% to 5.42%. The tests demonstrated the feasibility of utilizing the impact principle to assess the mass of radishes, opening up possibilities for the development of yield-monitoring systems for crops harvested in a similar manner.

AbstractExtensive use of the Internet of Things (IoT) in smart homes makes users' lives easy and comfortable. Yet, these resource‐constrained devices are prone to manifold security attacks. The sinkhole attack is one of the most destructive attacks that disrupt smart home operations, causing user dissatisfaction. Existing intrusion detection systems (IDS) cannot handle sinkhole attacks competently as they (i) do not consider the node capacity for being an IDS agent, leading to a low attack detection ratio, (ii) do not examine the sinkhole node's role when mitigating attacks, causing remaining network disconnection with the root node and (iii) do not consider replacing energy‐exhausted IDS nodes, causing connectivity loss of partial network with the root. This paper addresses these shortcomings and adequately presents a mechanism to handle sinkhole attacks. A formulation for assigning weights to network nodes based on their resources is proposed here. An IDS placement strategy is introduced to place IDS agents on particular resourceful nodes that extend network lifetime and enhance attack detection capability. We present a novel attack detection and mitigation strategy by ensuring network connectivity. The proposed mechanism achieves 95% attack detection accuracy and reduces false negative rates by 25% and energy consumption reasonably compared to the state‐of‐the‐art.

The conservation of traditional village clusters, especially those within traditional village aggregation areas, is an important part of historical cultural landscape preservation. With the hilly regions of Zhejiang province as the study area, this study innovatively proposed a traditional village aggregation area identification method from the perspective of historical layering. Because the influence of social economics on the spatial development of villages would gradually lead to spatially geographical features in the village evolution process, this study evaluated eight spatial characteristic indicators from natural geography, socioeconomics, and historical culture to identify ordinary traditional villages based on the threshold value extracted from protective traditional villages. In order to avoid the spatial identification deviation caused by only taking protective traditional villages as samples, we chose them together with ordinary traditional villages to identify 14 traditional village aggregation areas, which were categorized into four types based on regional protection conditions and development potential. This study expands the perspective for understanding the formation of the traditional villages’ spatial characteristics and provides development guidance for traditional village aggregation areas in hilly regions of Zhejiang province.

The Internet of Things (IoT) has recently attracted much interest from researchers due to its diverse IoT applications. However, IoT systems encounter additional security and privacy threats. Developing an efficient IoT system is challenging because of its sophisticated network topology. Effective access control is required to ensure user privacy in the Internet of Things. Traditional access control methods are inappropriate for IoT systems because most conventional access control approaches are designed for centralized systems. This paper proposes a decentralized access control framework based on smart contracts with three parts: initialization, an access control protocol, and an inspection. Smart contracts are used in the proposed framework to store access control policies safely on the blockchain. The framework also penalizes users for attempting unauthorized access to the IoT resources. The smart contract was developed using Remix and deployed on the Ropsten Ethereum testnet. We analyze the performance of the smart contract-based access policies based on the gas consumption of blockchain transactions. Further, we analyze the system’s security, usability, scalability, and interoperability performance.

Color development in various rice organs results from the complementary expression of genes involved in anthocyanin biosynthesis. The Purple pericarp (Prp) trait and the Purple leaf (Pl) trait both display epistasis, relying on the complement of the Pb and Pp genes for pericarp coloration and the Pl and Pp genes for leaf coloration, respectively. However, there is still genetic uncertainty in identifying the genes responsible for the various color expressions and intensities of rice grain pericarp and leaves. In this study, we characterized the inheritance patterns of color development and the mode of anthocyanin pigments in rice by crossing two parental mutant lines. YUM051, exhibiting dark purple leaves (Plw) and purple pericarp (Prp), was crossed with YUM144, which displayed light purple leaves (Pli) and a white pericarp (prp). The F1 plants exhibited dark purple leaves with purple pericarps, indicating the dominant nature of the purple leaf (Pl) and purple pericarp (Prp) traits. The rice Prp traits display a complementary interaction, reflected in a 9:7 ratio of purple to white pericarp. However, the Prp trait followed Mendelian segregation with a 3:1 ratio of purple to white pericarp in this cross, indicating homozygous dominant Pp alleles in both parental plants. Meanwhile, the segregation of the purple leaf color in the F2 generation of this cross followed complementary inheritance, exhibiting a 9:7 segregation ratio between purple leaves and greenish leaves with purple leaf margins. Moreover, the co-segregation of Prp and Pl traits in the cross between YUM051 (Plw) and YUM144 (Pli) plants did not adhere to the Mendelian 9:3:3:1 independent assortment ratio, confirming that the Pl gene and Pb gene are linked on the same chromosome. Cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (C3G) was detected in the leaves of all progeny resulting from the Plw and Pli cross. However, C3G was exclusively identified in the seeds of offspring carrying the dominant Pb gene. Therefore, the Plw and Pli alleles are Pl genes responsible for purple leaf color, while the Pb gene is responsible for purple pericarp color in rice; these genes function independently of each other.

Abstract Herbicides are commonly used in forestry to enhance conifer tree growth by reducing the abundance of competitive, undesired, early successional species. Reducing the abundance of understory species could also lead to changes in community composition that need to be documented to aid the understanding of any downstream ecosystem changes. We examined the effects of glyphosate-based herbicides on the abundance, diversity, and community composition of the understory vegetation community of forests located in the temperate-boreal transition zone. We sampled 37 blocks in two ecoregions of the Acadian Forest in eastern Canada that were harvested over the last 15 years. Species richness, Shannon’s diversity, or evenness did not differ among blocks with different herbicide history. However, community composition differed between the non-herbicide and herbicide blocks in both ecoregions. Overall, 26.5% of the plant community variation was explained by the factors herbicide use (10.6%), Biomass Growth Index/site quality (8.6%), time since harvest (3.6%), and ecoregion (1.7%). We found 16 indicator species that differentiated the non-herbicide (9 species) and herbicide blocks (7 species). Indicator species for non-herbicide blocks included two blueberry species, three shrubs (two flowering), and two ferns, whereas indicator species for herbicide blocks were largely perennial forbs. Together, our results indicate that herbicide use does not alter species richness but does reduce shrub abundance, a change that persists throughout the 10 years post-herbicide application captured in our study. The reduced shrub layer likely leads to other changes in the plant community. Herbicide use is associated with subtle changes to the understory plant community, and these changes are missed when only alpha diversity is used to examine the effects of herbicides use on community composition.
