[EN] Elevated atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition on terrestrial ecosystems has become one of the most important drivers of microbial diversity loss on a global scale, and has been reported to alter the soil function of nutrient-poor, montane Calluna vulgaris heathlands in the context of global change. In this work we analyze for the first time the shifts of bacterial communities in response to experimental addition of N in Calluna heathlands as a simulation of atmospheric deposition. Specifically, we evaluated the effects of five N addition treatments (0, 10, 20, and 50 kg N ha−1 yr−1 for 3-years; and 56 kg N ha−1 yr−1 for 10-years) on the resistance of soil bacterial communities as determined by changes in their composition and alpha and beta diversities. The study was conducted in montane Calluna heathlands at different development stages (young and mature phases) in the southern side of the Cantabrian Mountains (NW Spain). Our results evidenced a substantial increase of long-term (10-years) N inputs on soil extractable N-NH4+, particularly in young Calluna stands. The alpha diversity of soil bacterial communities in mature Calluna stands did not show a significant response to experimental N addition, whereas it was significantly higher under long-term chronic N addition (56 kg N ha−1 yr−1 for 10-years) in young Calluna stands. These bacterial community shifts are mainly attributable to a decrease in the dominance of Acidobacteria phylum, the most representative in montane Calluna ecosystems, in favor of copiotrophic taxa such as Actinobacteria or Proteobacteria phyla, favored under increased N availability. Future research should investigate what specific ecosystem functions performed by soil bacterial communities may be sensitive to increased nitrogen depositions, which may have substantial implications for the understanding of montane Calluna ecosystems' stability. Agriculture is an important contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. While the development of agricultural GHG emissions on national and global scales is well studied for the last three to six decades, little is known about their trajectory and drivers over longer periods. In this article, we address this research gap by calculating and analyzing GHG emissions related to agriculture in Austria from 1830 to 2018. We calculate territorial emissions on an annual basis and include all GHG emissions from the processes directly involved in agricultural production. Based on this time series, we quantify the relative importance of major drivers of changes in GHG emissions across time and agricultural product categories, applying a structural decomposition analysis. We find that agricultural GHG emissions in Austria increased by 69 % over the total study period, from 4.6 Mt. CO

Recent studies indicate that the Asian Water Tower (AWT) is at risk due to climate change, which can negatively impact water and food security in Asia. However, there is a lack of comprehensive information on lakes' spatial and temporal changes in this region. This information is crucial for understanding the risk magnitude and designing strategies. To fill this research gap, we analyzed 89,480 Landsat images from 1977 ± 2 to 2020 ± 2 to investigate the changes in the size of lakes recharged by the AWT. Our findings showed that out of the 209 lakes larger than 50 km2, 176 (84 %) grew during the wet season and 167 (81 %) during the dry season. 74 % of expanded lakes are located in the Inner Tibetan Plateau (TP) and Tarim basins. The lakes that shrank are found mainly in the Helmand, Indus, and Yangtze basins. Over the entire period, the area of shrinkage (55,077.028 km2 in wet season, 53,986.796 km2 in dry) markedly exceeded expansion (13,000.267 km2 in wet, 11,038.805 km2 in dry), with the drastic decline of the Aral Sea being a major contributor to shrinkage, accounting for 90 % of the total loss. From 1990 ± 2 to 2020 ± 2, alpine lakes mostly expanded, plain lakes mostly shrank, with the opposite trend from 1977 ± 2 to 1990 ± 2. Glacial loss and permafrost thawing under global warming in the Inner TP, Tarim Interior, Syr Darya, and Mekong basins were strongly correlated with lake expansion. However, permafrost discontinuities may prevent significant growth of lakes in the Indus and Ganges basins despite increased recharge. Our findings point to the prominence of the risk the lakes recharged by AWT face. Taking immediate action to manage these risks and adaptation is crucial as the AWT retreats and lake recharges are slowed.

Current trends in agriculture are focused on implementing sustainable practices that avoid the use of chemical compounds. It is important to propose environmentally friendly methods, which may enhance plant growth physiology and yield without affecting soil microbial community as much. In this context, irrigation with ozonated water could be a potential strategy to reduce some chemical compounds in soils due to the degradative power of ozone. Here, we studied the impact of irrigation with ozonated water on the microbial community of a Mediterranean soil, and on Solanum lycopersicum L. agro-physiology and productivity in a greenhouse experiment. To this end, we evaluated: i) soil physicochemical properties, soil enzyme activities, microbial biomass via fatty acid analysis, microbial diversity (via amplicon sequencing), and ii) the nutrient content, physiology, phytohormone content, yield, and fruit quality of tomato plants. Our results indicate that soil physicochemical properties were significantly affected by the irrigation with ozonated water (OZ). We observed an increase in the content of total organic carbon (TOC), water-soluble nitrogen (WSN) and ammonium, and a decrease in soil pH due to the OZ treatment. In addition, a significant increase in alkaline phosphatase and fungal and bacterial biomass was also observed in the OZ treatment. It was observed that the prokaryotic community structure was affected by the OZ treatment, while that of fungi was undisturbed. The OZ treatment increased the photosynthetic rates of tomato plants and maintained water conditions when compared to control plants. The increased trans-Zeatin riboside (tZ-Rib) could provide rapid apical and root growth allowing adaptation to the new growing conditions. However, a more in-depth study on the physiological response of the plant to this treatment would be of interest, as it would help with the implementation of this strategy in agricultural fields in a safe manner, and with obtaining higher plant yields.

The occurrence of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) or heavy metals in reclaimed water used for agricultural irrigation may affect crop morphology and physiology. Here, we analyzed lettuce (Lactuca sativa) grown in outdoor lysimeters and irrigated with either tap water, used as a control, or reclaimed water: CAS-reclaimed water, an effluent from a conventional activated sludge system (CAS) followed by chlorination and sand filtration, or MBR-reclaimed water, an effluent from a membrane biological reactor (MBR). Chemical analyses identified seven CECs in the reclaimed waters, but only two of them were detected in lettuce (carbamazepine and azithromycin). Metabolomic and transcriptomic analyses revealed that irrigation with reclaimed water increased the concentrations of several crop metabolites (5-oxoproline, leucine, isoleucine, and fumarate) and of transcripts codifying for the plant stress-related genes Heat-Shock Protein 70 (HSP70) and Manganese Superoxide Dismutase (MnSOD). In both cases, MBR-water elicited the strongest response in lettuce, perhaps related to its comparatively high sodium adsorption ratio (4.5), rather than to its content in CECs or heavy metals. Our study indicates that crop metabolomic and transcriptomic profiles depend on the composition of irrigating water and that they could be used for testing the impact of water quality in agriculture. This study was carried out within the project "Decision support-based approach for sustainable water reuse application in agricultural production (DSWAP)" which has received funding from the Partnership on Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA) under grant agreement No 1822. The current Argentine agricultural production model is dependent on agrochemicals such as fertilizers and pesticides. Extensive agriculture and horticulture are the two major productive activities that use copious amounts of pesticides. Extensive agriculture is characterized by areas of 50 to 100 ha of a single crop, while peri-urban horticulture is characterized by intense land use, with farms ranging from 1 to 3 ha cultivated with a variety of vegetables. Despite the relevance of pesticides, data on their effects on the biota associated with nearby watercourses are scarce. Given this paucity of knowledge, the objective of the present work was to assess the relative impact of extensive agriculture and horticulture on sediment quality in representative watercourses by conducting whole-sediment toxicity bioassays with the native amphipod Hyalella curvispina. The lower Gualeguay Basin, in the Province of Entre Ríos, was selected as a representative watercourse impacted by extensive agriculture, and the Carnaval Creek, on the periphery of La Plata, Province of Buenos Aires, was selected as a horticulture-impacted watercourse. Growth inhibition (sublethal effect) was observed in both systems, whereas mortality (lethal effect) was largely observed in horticulture. The observed effects were integrated with pesticide concentrations in the same sediments and correlated by multivariate analysis, revealing that toxicity was mainly due to insecticides, particularly λ-cyhalothrin. Therefore, horticultural practices and their associated pesticide use could potentially endanger the benthic fauna of nearby watercourses.

Predatory myxobacteria are important soil micropredators with the potential to regulate soil microbial community structure and ecosystem function. However, the biogeographic distribution patterns, assembly processes, and potential nutrient cycling functions of myxobacteria communities in typical agricultural soils in China are still poorly understood. High-throughput sequencing, phylogenetic zero modeling, and the multi-nutrient cycling index were used to assess the biogeographic distribution, assembly processes, and soil ecosystem functions of predation myxobacteria communities in typical agricultural soils of six long-term fertilization ecological experimental stations. The results demonstrated a hump-shaped distribution of myxobacteria α-diversity along the latitudinal gradient and significant differences in myxobacteria β-diversity in typical agricultural soils (P 0.05). Bacterial richness, soil organic carbon, and pH were the most important predictors of myxobacteria α-diversity, whereas geographic factors and soil pH were the most significant ecological predictors of myxobacteria β-diversity. Myxobacteria community assembly is dominated by deterministic processes, especially homogeneous selection, primarily driven by soil pH and bacterial richness. In addition, we revealed the ecological significance of myxobacteria communities in typical agricultural soil microbial networks and the potential link between myxobacteria communities and soil nutrient cycling. These findings enhance our understanding of the biogeographic distribution, community assembly, ecological predictors, and relationships with soil nutrient cycling of myxobacteria communities in typical agricultural soils, paving the way for a more predictive understanding of the effect of predatory myxobacteria communities on soil ecosystem function, which is essential for the development of sustainable agriculture.

Denitrifying microbial communities in the vadose zone play an essential role in eliminating the nitrate leached from agricultural practices. This nitrate could otherwise contaminate groundwater and threaten public health. Here, we utilized stable isotope probing combined with amplicon sequencing and functional gene quantification to inspect the composition and function of heterotrophic denitrifying microorganisms along a 9-m soil profile in an intensive agricultural area. Dramatic differences in the composition of the active denitrifiers were uncovered between the surface soil and deep layers of the vadose zone. The main denitrifying bacterial taxa identified from 13C-DNA fractions were Pseudomonadaceae (Pseudomonas), Rhodocyclaceae (Azoarcus), and Burkholderiaceae in the surface soil (0–0.2 m), and were Pseudomonadaceae (Pseudomonas), Burkholderiaceae, Bacillaceae (Bacillus), and Paenibacillaceae (Ammoniphilus) in the deep layers (0.5–9.0 m). Analysis of the functional genes (nirS, nirK, and nosZ) in isotope-labeled DNA revealed an upward nos/nir ratio with increasing soil depth, which may account for the higher nitrous oxide emission potential in the surface soil, as compared to the deeper sand-rich, low organic carbon layers. This study improves our understanding of active denitrifying microbes in the vadose zone and helps in developing techniques to reduce nitrate pollution in groundwater.

In this study, artificial humic acid (AHA) was produced from rice straw at room temperature. The response surface methodology was used to investigate the response of artificial humic acid to time, liquid-solid ratio, and KOH concentration. The optimal reaction conditions were determined: reaction time of 2 h, liquid-solid ratio of 6, and KOH concentration of 1.5 mol/L. The artificial humic acid content under these conditions was 32.29 g/L, which satisfied the Chinese agricultural industry standard for water-soluble humic acid fertilizers (humic acid content ≥30 g/L). Compared with chemical fertilizers, artificial humic acid fertilizer promoted chard growth and increased soil organic matter and humic acid. The stability of artificial humic acid was better, with a retention rate of 60.47 % in the soil. Water-soluble humic acid fertilizer also promoted chard growth by increasing the relative abundance of growth-promoting bacteria such as Glutamicibacter and Pseudomonas and, as well as growth-promoting fungi such as Mortierella. The application of water-soluble humic acid fertilizers has implications for both soil improvement and the reduction of agricultural carbon emissions.
