    Every year the world celebrates the International Mountain Day on 11 December. This international day was launched for the first time in 2003 and since then, it has become a symbolic date to acknowledge the uniqueness of mountains across the world. As years passed, the predominant vision about mountains as mere “fragile ecosystems” has been increasingly challenged. A new narrative that looks at mountains as territories of opportunity has emerged and is becoming more and more widely accepted. On this special day for mountains, we thus call on policy makers at all levels to acknowledge the contribution of rural, remote and mountain areas to Europe’s green and digital transition, and more particularly the role of communities, who need to see their role fully recognized in this new narrative. We also firmly believe that this transformation towards more sustainable, liveable and future-oriented mountain areas cannot be achieved without women. Women are a key pillar of mountain regions. They are backbone of the family, they often are entrepreneurs, they nurture relations within their own communities and with their younger relatives who have left mountain areas. Women are custodians of traditions and knowledge, but also fighters and drivers of change in the mountains. With this booklet, we thus want to welcome and celebrate this year’s International Mountain Day theme “Women move mountains”. Making a fresh, inclusive narrative for the future of mountains is a small but crucial first step. This publication is the result of a collaboration between the MOVING project, an international and multidisciplinary research project to strengthen the resilience of mountain products value chains, and Euromontana, the European Association of Mountain Areas. This booklet is a compilation of 13 testimonies from women who either live in mountain areas or work to make them more sustainable and futurefocused. Their testimonies unite the voices, narratives, and perspectives of women operating in several fields important to the future of mountains who hail from various mountain ranges in Europe. This booklet also demonstrates how important women's roles are in their communities. It also highlights that mountain women face with similar challenges, and above all, lack of adequate recognition. Lastly, this brochure also looks at the opportunities that women have in mountain areas. Mountains and the women who live in mountainous areas are in a period of transformation. We hope that this booklet will inspire you. Enjoy your reading!

    This Multi-Actor Platform (MAP) position paper was developed within the Horizon 2020 project, Sustainable Hub to Engage into Rural Policies with Actors (SHERPA). The Swedish MAP is located in Norrbotten, a large region in the north of Sweden. One of the reasons for choosing digitalisation as a topic in MAP Norrbotten is the potential of digital services in this and large sparsely populated region. Another aspect is the problem of uneven access to fast broadband connection, which can increase digital exclusion, especially when the digital transformation will speed up. This Position Paper for MAP Norrbotten has been developed throughout workshops and meetings with the MAP members during 2022

    Authors: Jungsberg, Leneisja; Refsgaard, Karen;

    Rural areas in Denmark contain many local development initiatives, entrepreneurship, and green transition projects. Research shows that from a quality-of-life perspective, there is not a big difference between the city and the countryside when adjusting for socioeconomic variables (gender, age, health, partner, education, employment status, income), and in most of the years, the differences are not statistically significant. In the period 2002-2014, the value of the average life satisfaction in the countryside is 8.48, while in the city, it is 8.39 for the whole period (Sørensen 2018). Research on rural areas has also focused on the development of national rural policies, exploitation of natural resources, employment, migration, and the discourse surrounding rural areas (Svendsen, Sørensen, Noe 2018). Previous studies have also shown how the optimal way to build local capacity is to ensure that external resources benefit internal mobilization (Tanvig and Herslund, 2020). Another recent study identifies a growth in civil society-driven initiatives that are also business-oriented and points to this as a grey area where the advice of rural coordinators often has certain limitations (Hedetoft og Broegaard, 2020).

    Authors: Refsgaard, Karen; Jungsberg, Leneisja;

    Landdistrikterne i Danmark rummer mange lokale udviklingsinitiativer, iværksætteri, og grønne omstillingsprojekter. Forskningen viser at der i et livskvalitetsperspektiv ikke er den store forskel på by og land når der justeres for socioøkonomiske variabler (køn, alder, helbred, partner, uddannelse, beskæftigelsesstatus, indkomst) og i de fleste af årene er forskellene ikke statistisk signifikante. I perioden 2002-2014 er værdien af den gennemsnitlige tilfredshed med livet på henholdsvis landet 8.48 mens den i byen er på 8.39 for hele perioden (Sørensen 2018). Forskning om landdistrikterne har desuden fokuseret på udviklingen i den nationale landdistriktspolitik, udnyttelse af naturressourcer, beskæftigelse, migration og italesættelse af landdistrikterne (Svendsen, Sørensen, Noe 2018). Tidligere studier har desuden vist hvordan det optimale for at bygge lokal kapacitet er at sikre at eksterne ressourcer gavner en intern mobilisering (Tanvig og Herslund, 2020). Et andet nyligt studie identificerer en vækst i civilsamfundsdrevne initiativer, der også er erhvervsorienterede, og peger på dette som en gråzone, hvor landdistriktskoordinatorernes rådgivning ofte kommer til kort (Hedetoft og Broegaard, 2020).

    Authors: Sumrada, Tanja; Rac, Ilona; Erjavec, Emil;

    Landscape features (LF) have been shown to be crucial for biodiversity conservation in agricultural ecosystems, can positively affect production, enable value-adding to products and have a high cultural and aesthetic value. Their inappropriate management is among the main drivers of biodiversity loss in the EU. Existing agricultural policy instruments in Slovenia do not protect LF adequately and have even stimulated their removal. The main drawbacks of the current system are a lack of data and ineligibility of most LF for budgetary support. LF should be better defined and included into policies with a clear intervention logic that balance economic and biodiversity goals objectives. Measures should be appropriately divided into standard and above-standard, making sure that farmers are appropriately compensated and educated, and minimising administrative burden. Simultaneously, it should be ensured that measures are linked to actual biodiversity effects.

    Enhancing the synergies between agricultural production and biodiversity conservation is one of the specific objectives of the next CAP. Hence, the Emilia Romagna MAP provided a good opportunity to discuss the main trade-offs and potential synergies between biodiversity and agricultural production in the region. Agri-food sector in Emilia Romagna generates significant benefits for regional economy but is also causing a high territorial fragmentation, land use change and intensification that negatively affect biodiversity. Given that, the greatest challenge for the regional agriculture is to improve the balance between biodiversity conservation, on one side, and maintaining a strong and competitive agri-food industry, on the other. The MAP identified several areas where interventions by policy and research could ensure a better balance. Among them, a greater support to innovation, a better design of Agri-Environment Schemes (AES), providing more evidence of the long-term benefits of biodiversity conservation on farmers’ income and consumers’ health and enhancing farmers’ education and communication to consumers.

    It is recognized by the members of the MAP Alqueva that landscape features (LF) are essential to restore, and to prevent the loss of, biodiversity and ecosystem services. It is also recognized that there is a need for the definition of rural policies that mitigate the loss of biodiversity through the promotion of the protection and sustainable management of landscape features, and that these policies need to be based in solid scientific information and long term monitoring of their impact.

    Authors: Jungsberg, Leneisja; Refsgaard, Karen;

    Landdistrikterne i Danmark rummer mange lokale udviklingsinitiativer, iværksætteri, og grønne omstillingsprojekter. Forskningen viser at der i et livskvalitetsperspektiv ikke er den store forskel på by og land når der justeres for socioøkonomiske variabler (køn, alder, helbred, partner, uddannelse, beskæftigelsesstatus, indkomst) og i de fleste af årene er forskellene ikke statistisk signifikante. I perioden 2002-2014 er værdien af den gennemsnitlige tilfredshed med livet på henholdsvis landet 8.48 mens den i byen er på 8.39 for hele perioden (Sørensen 2018). Forskning om landdistrikterne har desuden fokuseret på udviklingen i den nationale landdistriktspolitik, udnyttelse af naturressourcer, beskæftigelse, migration og italesættelse af landdistrikterne (Svendsen, Sørensen, Noe 2018). Tidligere studier har desuden vist hvordan det optimale for at bygge lokal kapacitet er at sikre at eksterne ressourcer gavner en intern mobilisering (Tanvig og Herslund, 2020). Et andet nyligt studie identificerer en vækst i civilsamfundsdrevne initiativer, der også er erhvervsorienterede, og peger på dette som en gråzone, hvor landdistriktskoordinatorernes rådgivning ofte kommer til kort (Hedetoft og Broegaard, 2020).
