    Authors: Williams Jiménez, Iván;

    Ponencia presentada en el Seminario "Los nuevos retos del trabajo decente: la salud mental y los riesgos psicosociales (ODS 3, 5, 8 y 10)" celebrado el 6 de junio de 2019 en el campus de Getafe de la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. Las condiciones de trabajo (incluyendo la organización del trabajo, la intensidad del trabajo, los niveles de estrés, estilos de dirección pobres y mala gestión de la conciliación entre la vida personal y profesional) están sufriendo nuevos desafíos, debido a factores como la globalización, el empleo precario y la digitalización. Ante esta situación los entornos laborales están evolucionando e introduciendo nuevas formas de trabajo que necesitan ser tratadas por el legislador. En este escenario, la prevención de riesgos psicosociales a través de la regulación juega un papel clave en la protección de la seguridad, salud y bienestar ocupacional de los trabajadores. En este nuevo contexto los entornos de trabajo cambian drásticamente en conjunto con la introducción de nuevas tecnologías y procesos de trabajo. Si tenemos en cuenta el actual grado de desarrollo e integración de las tecnologías de Inteligencia Artificial (IA) y automatización en el lugar de trabajo y en prácticas de gestión de trabajadores, existe una necesidad de analizar su uso más allá del mero propósito que tienen a menudo asociado con el incremento de la productividad y beneficio económico en los lugares de trabajo globalizados. La integración de estos desarrollos también conlleva una serie de implicaciones para las prácticas laborales, analítica de las personas, planificación de plantillas y riesgos para la seguridad y salud de los trabajadores, pero los recientes usos de las herramientas de IA también introducen preguntas acerca de las implicaciones éticas y normativas que deben ser tratadas. No cabe duda de que la tendencia en las dinámicas de adopción de estas nuevas tecnologías está cambiando la manera en la que trabajamos de formas que no habíamos sido testigos hasta ahora. El aumento en la monitorización de los empleados, la disponibilidad 24/7, los cambios frecuentes de trabajo y la gestión del trabajo a través de algoritmos están convirtiéndose en prácticas cada vez más habituales para los trabajadores y el mercado laboral. En este sentido existe una imperiosa necesidad de explorar las múltiples maneras en las que las tecnologías de inteligencia artificial y automatización impactan en el derecho del trabajo, la seguridad y salud laboral y las condiciones de trabajo incluyendo de manera específica el potencial impacto en los riesgos psicosociales. Working conditions (including work organisation, work intensity, stress levels, poor management, poor work–life balance) are facing new challenges, due to factors such as precarious employment, globalisation and digitalisation. Working environments are evolving and introducing new forms of work that need to be addressed by policymakers. In this scenario, psychosocial risk prevention regulations will play a key role in protecting workers’ occupational safety and health (OSH) and wellbeing. Working environments are dramatically changing alongside the introduction of new technologies and work processes. Given the integration and deployment of Artificial Intelligence and automation technologies in the workplace and in people management practices, there´s a need to look beyond the purely purpose of increasing productivity and profitability of today globalised workplaces. The integration of new technologies into the workplace have also key implications for employment practices, people analytics, workforce planning and safety and health risks, but the newest uses of AI tools also introduce specific questions around regulatory and ethical implications that must be addressed. There´s no doubt that the prevalence in the adoption of these new technologies in workplaces are changing the way we work in ways hardly seen before. Increased monitoring of workers, 24/7 availability, frequent job changes and the management of work by algorithms are starting to become the new ´business as usual´ for workers and labour practices. To this respect there’s an increasing need to explore the multiple ways artificial intelligence and automation technologies impact on labour law, occupational safety and health and working conditions including the potential of psychosocial risk impacts.

    Mapas de propiedades edáficas en suelos de Andalucía, elaborados siguiendo un procedimiento numérico de síntesis, a partir de la información edafológica geo-referenciada de la base de datos SDBm-SEISnet/IRNAS y del Sistema de Información Geológica y Minera de Andalucía. Esta colección de mapas de Andalucía (27 mapas) se refiere a los siguientes parámetros edáficos: materia orgánica, pH, contenido en arcilla, contenido en limo, contenido en arena, humedad equivalente, punto de marchitez y densidad aparente. Además, los mapas se diferencian según que dichos parámetros estén medidos en las siguientes profundidades del perfil vertical del suelo: 0-25 cm, 25-50 cm y todo el perfil. Esta infraestructura cartográfica puede resultar de gran utilidad para futuras interpretaciones y evaluaciones del uso y conservación de los suelos de Andalucía. Escala 1:1.400.000.-- Metodología: Se utilizan tecnologías SIG y teledetección espacial.-- cmartin@irnase.csic.es Junta de Andalucía a través de un acuerdo específico entre DAP y el IRNAS.     Authors: Zaragozi, Benito; Trilles, Sergio; Gutierrez, Aaron;

    The article uses passive mobile data to analyse the complex mobilities that occur in a coastal region characterised by seasonal patterns of tourism activity. A large volume of data generated by mobile phone users has been selected and processed to subsequently display the information in the form of visualisations that are useful for transport and tourism research, policy, and practice. More specifically, the analysis consisted of four steps: (1) a dataset containing records for four days-two on summer days and two in winter-was selected, (2) these were aggregated spatially, temporally, and differentiating trips by local residents, national tourists, and international tourists, (3) origin-destination matrices were built, and (4) graph-based visualisations were created to provide evidence on the nature of the mobilities affecting the study area. The results of our work provide new evidence of how the analysis of passive mobile data can be useful to study the effects of tourism seasonality in local mobility patterns.

    At it's latest Conference of the Parties in November 2017, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change adopting the 'Koronivia joint work on agriculture' agreement, transferring agriculture to the agenda of its two Subsidiary Bodies. This study approaches agriculture's incorporation into the Convention from the theoretical perspective of institutional interaction - a framework for understanding how one institution influences another - in order to show that the involvement of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in the negotiations has played a decisive role in the Convention's growing consideration of agriculture.

    Authors: Hermosilla, Txomin;

    Urban areas areimportant environments, accounting for approximately half the population of theworld. Cities attract residents partly because they offer ample opportunitiesfor development, which often results in urban sprawl and its complex environmentalimplications. It is therefore necessary to develop technologies andmethodologies that permit monitoring the effects of various problems that havebeen or are thought to be associated with urban sprawl. These technologieswould facilitate the adoption of policies seeking to minimize the negativeeffects of urban sprawl. Solutions require a precise knowledge of the urbanenvironment under consideration to enable the development of more efficienturban zoning plans. The high dynamism of urban areas produces seeminglycontinuous alterations of land cover and use; consequently, cartographicinformation becomes quickly and is oftentimes outdated. Hence, the availabilityof detailed and up-to-date cartographic and geographic information is imperativefor an adequate management and planning of urban areas. Usually the process ofcreating land-use/land-cover maps of urban areas involves field visits andclassical photo-interpretation techniques employing aerial imagery. Thesemethodologies are expensive, time consuming, and also subjective. Digital imageprocessing techniques help reduce the volume of information that needs to bemanually interpreted.The aim of thisstudy is to establish a methodology to automatically detect buildings and toautomatically classify land use in urban environments using multispectralhigh-spatial resolution imagery and LiDAR data. These data were acquired in theframework of the Spanish National Plan for Airborne Orthophotographs, having beenavailable for public Spanish administrations.Two mainapproaches for automatic building detection and localization using high spatialresolution imagery and LiDAR data are evaluated The thresholding-based approachis founded on the establishment of two threshold values: one is the minimumheight to be considered as a building, defined using the LiDAR data; the other isthe presence of vegetation, defined with the spectral response. The otherapproach follows the standard scheme of object-based image classification:segmentation, feature extraction and selection, and classification, hereperformed using decision trees. In addition, the effect of including contextualrelations with shadows in the building detection process is evaluated. Qualityassessment is performed at both area and object levels. Area-level assessments evaluatethe building delineation performance whereas object-level assessments evaluatethe accuracy in the spatial location of individual buildings.Urban land-useclassification is achieved by applying object-based image analysis techniques.Objects are defined using the boundaries of cadastral plots. The plots were characterizedto achieve the classification by employing a descriptive feature setspecifically designed to describe urban environments. The proposed descriptivefeatures aim to emulate human cognition by numerically quantifying theproperties of the image elements and so enable each to be distinguishable.These features describe each plot as a single entity based on several aspectsthat reflect the information used: spectral, three-dimensional, and geometrictypologies. In addition, a set of contextual features at both the internal andexternal levels is defined. Internal context features describe an object withrespect to the land cover types contained within the plots, which were, in thiscase, buildings and vegetation. External context features characterise eachobject by considering the common properties of adjacent objects that, whencombined, create an aggregate in a higher level than plot level: urban blocks.Results show that thresholding-based building detection approachperforms better in the different scenarios assessed. This method produces amore accurate building delineation and object detection than the object-basedclassification method. The building type appears as a key factor in thebuilding detection performance. Thus, urban and industrial areas show betteraccuracies in detection metrics than suburban areas, due to the small size ofsuburban constructions, combined with the prominent presence of trees insuburban classes, hindering the building detection process. The relationsbetween buildings and shadows improve the object-level detection, removingsmall objects erroneously detected as buildings that negatively affect to thequality indices.Classificationtest results show that internal and external context features complement theimage-derived features, improving the classification accuracy values of urbanclasses, especially between classes that show similarities in their image-basedand three-dimensional features. Context features enable a superiordiscrimination of suburban building typologies, of planned urban areas andhistorical areas, and also of planned urban areas and isolated buildings.The outcomes showthat these automatic methodologies are especially suitable for computing usefulinformation for constructing and updating land-use/land-cover geospatialdatabases. Digital image processing-based methodologies provide better resultsthan visual interpretation-based methods. Thus, automatic building detectiontechniques produce a superior estimation of built-up surface in an objectivemanner, independent of human operators. The combination of building detectionand automatic classification of land use in urban areas enable the distinguishingand describing of different urban typologies, contributing to greater accuracyand information than standard visual interpretation-based techniques. Theproposed methodology, based on an automated descriptive feature extraction fromLiDAR images and data, is appropriate for city mapping, urban landscapecharacterisation and management, and the updating of geospatial databases, allof which provide novel tools to increase the frequency and efficiency of thestudy of complex urban areas.     Authors: Williams Jiménez, Iván;

    Ponencia presentada en el Seminario "Los nuevos retos del trabajo decente: la salud mental y los riesgos psicosociales (ODS 3, 5, 8 y 10)" celebrado el 6 de junio de 2019 en el campus de Getafe de la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. Las condiciones de trabajo (incluyendo la organización del trabajo, la intensidad del trabajo, los niveles de estrés, estilos de dirección pobres y mala gestión de la conciliación entre la vida personal y profesional) están sufriendo nuevos desafíos, debido a factores como la globalización, el empleo precario y la digitalización. Ante esta situación los entornos laborales están evolucionando e introduciendo nuevas formas de trabajo que necesitan ser tratadas por el legislador. En este escenario, la prevención de riesgos psicosociales a través de la regulación juega un papel clave en la protección de la seguridad, salud y bienestar ocupacional de los trabajadores. En este nuevo contexto los entornos de trabajo cambian drásticamente en conjunto con la introducción de nuevas tecnologías y procesos de trabajo. Si tenemos en cuenta el actual grado de desarrollo e integración de las tecnologías de Inteligencia Artificial (IA) y automatización en el lugar de trabajo y en prácticas de gestión de trabajadores, existe una necesidad de analizar su uso más allá del mero propósito que tienen a menudo asociado con el incremento de la productividad y beneficio económico en los lugares de trabajo globalizados. La integración de estos desarrollos también conlleva una serie de implicaciones para las prácticas laborales, analítica de las personas, planificación de plantillas y riesgos para la seguridad y salud de los trabajadores, pero los recientes usos de las herramientas de IA también introducen preguntas acerca de las implicaciones éticas y normativas que deben ser tratadas. No cabe duda de que la tendencia en las dinámicas de adopción de estas nuevas tecnologías está cambiando la manera en la que trabajamos de formas que no habíamos sido testigos hasta ahora. El aumento en la monitorización de los empleados, la disponibilidad 24/7, los cambios frecuentes de trabajo y la gestión del trabajo a través de algoritmos están convirtiéndose en prácticas cada vez más habituales para los trabajadores y el mercado laboral. En este sentido existe una imperiosa necesidad de explorar las múltiples maneras en las que las tecnologías de inteligencia artificial y automatización impactan en el derecho del trabajo, la seguridad y salud laboral y las condiciones de trabajo incluyendo de manera específica el potencial impacto en los riesgos psicosociales. Working conditions (including work organisation, work intensity, stress levels, poor management, poor work–life balance) are facing new challenges, due to factors such as precarious employment, globalisation and digitalisation. Working environments are evolving and introducing new forms of work that need to be addressed by policymakers. In this scenario, psychosocial risk prevention regulations will play a key role in protecting workers’ occupational safety and health (OSH) and wellbeing. Working environments are dramatically changing alongside the introduction of new technologies and work processes. Given the integration and deployment of Artificial Intelligence and automation technologies in the workplace and in people management practices, there´s a need to look beyond the purely purpose of increasing productivity and profitability of today globalised workplaces. The integration of new technologies into the workplace have also key implications for employment practices, people analytics, workforce planning and safety and health risks, but the newest uses of AI tools also introduce specific questions around regulatory and ethical implications that must be addressed. There´s no doubt that the prevalence in the adoption of these new technologies in workplaces are changing the way we work in ways hardly seen before. Increased monitoring of workers, 24/7 availability, frequent job changes and the management of work by algorithms are starting to become the new ´business as usual´ for workers and labour practices. To this respect there’s an increasing need to explore the multiple ways artificial intelligence and automation technologies impact on labour law, occupational safety and health and working conditions including the potential of psychosocial risk impacts.

    Authors: Hermosilla, Txomin;

    Urban areas areimportant environments, accounting for approximately half the population of theworld. Cities attract residents partly because they offer ample opportunitiesfor development, which often results in urban sprawl and its complex environmentalimplications. It is therefore necessary to develop technologies andmethodologies that permit monitoring the effects of various problems that havebeen or are thought to be associated with urban sprawl. These technologieswould facilitate the adoption of policies seeking to minimize the negativeeffects of urban sprawl. Solutions require a precise knowledge of the urbanenvironment under consideration to enable the development of more efficienturban zoning plans. The high dynamism of urban areas produces seeminglycontinuous alterations of land cover and use; consequently, cartographicinformation becomes quickly and is oftentimes outdated. Hence, the availabilityof detailed and up-to-date cartographic and geographic information is imperativefor an adequate management and planning of urban areas. Usually the process ofcreating land-use/land-cover maps of urban areas involves field visits andclassical photo-interpretation techniques employing aerial imagery. Thesemethodologies are expensive, time consuming, and also subjective. Digital imageprocessing techniques help reduce the volume of information that needs to bemanually interpreted.The aim of thisstudy is to establish a methodology to automatically detect buildings and toautomatically classify land use in urban environments using multispectralhigh-spatial resolution imagery and LiDAR data. These data were acquired in theframework of the Spanish National Plan for Airborne Orthophotographs, having beenavailable for public Spanish administrations.Two mainapproaches for automatic building detection and localization using high spatialresolution imagery and LiDAR data are evaluated The thresholding-based approachis founded on the establishment of two threshold values: one is the minimumheight to be considered as a building, defined using the LiDAR data; the other isthe presence of vegetation, defined with the spectral response. The otherapproach follows the standard scheme of object-based image classification:segmentation, feature extraction and selection, and classification, hereperformed using decision trees. In addition, the effect of including contextualrelations with shadows in the building detection process is evaluated. Qualityassessment is performed at both area and object levels. Area-level assessments evaluatethe building delineation performance whereas object-level assessments evaluatethe accuracy in the spatial location of individual buildings.Urban land-useclassification is achieved by applying object-based image analysis techniques.Objects are defined using the boundaries of cadastral plots. The plots were characterizedto achieve the classification by employing a descriptive feature setspecifically designed to describe urban environments. The proposed descriptivefeatures aim to emulate human cognition by numerically quantifying theproperties of the image elements and so enable each to be distinguishable.These features describe each plot as a single entity based on several aspectsthat reflect the information used: spectral, three-dimensional, and geometrictypologies. In addition, a set of contextual features at both the internal andexternal levels is defined. Internal context features describe an object withrespect to the land cover types contained within the plots, which were, in thiscase, buildings and vegetation. External context features characterise eachobject by considering the common properties of adjacent objects that, whencombined, create an aggregate in a higher level than plot level: urban blocks.Results show that thresholding-based building detection approachperforms better in the different scenarios assessed. This method produces amore accurate building delineation and object detection than the object-basedclassification method. The building type appears as a key factor in thebuilding detection performance. Thus, urban and industrial areas show betteraccuracies in detection metrics than suburban areas, due to the small size ofsuburban constructions, combined with the prominent presence of trees insuburban classes, hindering the building detection process. The relationsbetween buildings and shadows improve the object-level detection, removingsmall objects erroneously detected as buildings that negatively affect to thequality indices.Classificationtest results show that internal and external context features complement theimage-derived features, improving the classification accuracy values of urbanclasses, especially between classes that show similarities in their image-basedand three-dimensional features. Context features enable a superiordiscrimination of suburban building typologies, of planned urban areas andhistorical areas, and also of planned urban areas and isolated buildings.The outcomes showthat these automatic methodologies are especially suitable for computing usefulinformation for constructing and updating land-use/land-cover geospatialdatabases. Digital image processing-based methodologies provide better resultsthan visual interpretation-based methods. Thus, automatic building detectiontechniques produce a superior estimation of built-up surface in an objectivemanner, independent of human operators. The combination of building detectionand automatic classification of land use in urban areas enable the distinguishingand describing of different urban typologies, contributing to greater accuracyand information than standard visual interpretation-based techniques. Theproposed methodology, based on an automated descriptive feature extraction fromLiDAR images and data, is appropriate for city mapping, urban landscapecharacterisation and management, and the updating of geospatial databases, allof which provide novel tools to increase the frequency and efficiency of thestudy of complex urban areas.
