    The agri-food system is called upon to face the challenge of sustainability without further delay. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (first) and the Farm to Fork Strategy (later) have reaffirmed the need for rapidly achieving more sustainable production models, also in the agri-food sector. The pursuit of this goal requires to clarify first of all the parameters on which the assessment of the greater or lesser sustainability of the agri-food system should be based. Faced with the advent of the so-called digital revolution, the question arises whether digitalisation can in any way represent a valid ally to the agri-food system in the pursuit of sustainability.

    NEW MEDIT is a quarterly review published on behalf of the IAM in Bari, the Italian Institute of Ciheam. Economics, agriculture, and environment are the key words of the subjects dealt with in the review. The papers tackle the different problems characterising the economy and the agriculture of the Mediterranean countries, with a multi-disciplinary approach,, and the relationships between them. NEW MEDIT is an information and scientific analysis tool for getting a deeper insight into the economic and the social transformations of agriculture and the rural societies as well as in agro-food networks of the Mediterranean Basin. The articles are published in English or French, with an abstract in both languages. Articles submitted for publication are evaluated by the editorial board and by outside readers chosen on account of their expertise. Impact factor: 0,11

    Well functioning factor markets are a crucial condition for the competitiveness and growth of agriculture and for rural development. At the same time, the functioning of the factor markets themselves are influenced by changes in agriculture and the rural economy, and in EU policies. Member state regulations and institutions affecting land, labour, and capital markets may cause important heterogeneity in the factor markets, which may have important effects on the functioning of the factor markets and on the interactions between factor markets and EU policies. The general objective of the Factor Markets project is to analyse the functioning of factor markets for agriculture in the EU-27, including the Candidate Countries. The Factor Markets project will compare the different markets, their institutional framework and their impact on agricultural development and structural change, as well as their impact on rural economies, for the Member States, Candidate Countries and the EU as a whole. The Factor Markets project will focus on capital, labour and land markets. The results of this study will contribute to a better understanding of the fundamental economic factors affecting EU agriculture, thus allowing better targeting of policies to improve the competitiveness of the sector.

    Authors: RAGGI, MERI;

    Stronger accountability requirements and EU budget constraints will increase the pressure towards policies targeted on specific objectives such as the provision of public benefits (environmental, rural, social). For the EU`s rural development programmes 2007-2013 Member States are requested to collect indicators on characteristics, needs, expenditures and results. Additionally, managing authorities in some Member States have created GIS-based databases with a huge amount of data related to area-based measures. What is lacking is analysis in which these data sets are combined with other indicators at a high level of regional disaggregation. The FP7 EU project SPARD deals with this research question. The main objectives of SPARD are •to provide a framework for organising the collection and the use of regional key baseline data and evaluation results of Rural Development Programmes other statistical and economic information in a systematic, clear and concise way;•to explain the causal relationships between regional characteristics and needs, on the one hand, and the Rural Development Programmes implementation and success in their spatial dimension, on the other, •to develop and apply a spatial econometric modelling approach•to build a tool that will help policymakers, both at EU and Member States/ regional level, to design better targeted Rural Development Programmes
