    The growth of the human population is causing an exponential increase in the need for food. Fertilizers are one of the most important elements to meet this increased demand and to ensure global food security. Many enhanced efficiency fertilizers, such as controlled-release fertilizers (CRFs) have been developed. Although these fertilizers offer many advantages over prior generations, their high cost of production as well as unfavorable effects on the environment and soil quality have limited their use. To mitigate these issues, CRFs based on biopolymers (CRF@BB) represent a new generation of fertilizers produced by coating the granules with biopolymers. In addition to controlling the nutrient release rate, these products also enhance the soil quality and they reduce the negative effects associated with conventional fertilizers. This review summarizes the recent advances in biopolymers and derived biopolymers used in the area of CRF@BB, the coating technologies, and the parameters governing the release behavior through organic coating materials, as well as the effect of coated CRFs on the soil and plants growth.     ABSTRACTThe use of treated wastewater (TWW) as an alternative resource to fresh water (FW) for irrigation purposes is becoming increasingly important, especially in semiarid and arid regions. However, achieving success in crop production largely depends on the adoption of appropriate on‐farm management strategies aimed at optimizing crop yields, maintaining soil productivity and safeguarding the environment. For this purpose, predictive models are of particular interest. A safe irrigation management (SIM) model developed and tested in this research was used to schedule irrigation under controlled management tailored to the use of 1) TWW and 2) FW and to reproduce farmers' strategies. These management strategies aim to improve actual irrigation practices, accounting for water quality, soil characteristics, and crop yield. The results of the application of SIM on a citrus farm in Souss‐Massa, Morocco, show that the management strategy adopted by farmers withdraws considerable amounts of water and results in substantial drainage volumes compared to those in the SIM strategy. In the specific case of TWW, the strategy simulated by the SIM model resulted in a decrease in yield of approximately 4%, compared to the 23% decrease derived from the farmers' traditional strategy. Moreover, SIM allowed for great savings in terms of fertilizing elements and for the reduction in the movement of water and salts beyond the root zone, usually considered the main source of groundwater contamination. These results confirm the appropriateness of using prediction models and the accuracy of the SIM model in adapting irrigation strategies to TWW, which will be an integral part of the strategies that encourage their use in irrigated agriculture.     ss basin. Furthermore, the developments of collapse dolines in agricultural and inhabited areas enhance the risk of life loss, injury, and property damage. Here, the lack of research on newly formed cavities has exacerbated the situation. The limited studies using remote sensing or geophysical methods to determine the degree of karstification and vulnerability of this environment fail to provide the spatial extent and depth location of individual karst cavities. In order to contribute to the effort of sinkhole risk reduction in TMA, we employed remote sensing and geophysical surveys to integrate electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and self-potential (SP) for subsurface characterization of four sinkholes identified in the Causse of El Hajeb. The results revealed the existence of sinkholes, both visible and non-accessible at the surface, in carbonate rocks. The sinkholes exhibited distinct morphologies, with depths reaching 35 m. Topography, geographic coordinates and land cover information extracted on remote sensing data demonstrated that these cavities were developed in depressions in which agricultural activities are regularly performed. The fusion of these methods benefits from remote sensing in geophysical surveys, particularly in acquisition, georeferencing, processing and interpretation of geophysical data. Furthermore, our proposed method allows identification of the protection perimeter required to minimize the risks posed by sinkholes. The Causse of El Hajeb belongs to the Tabular Middle Atlas (TMA), in which thousands of karst landforms have been identified. Among them, collapse dolines and dissolution sinkholes have been highlighted as a source of environmental risks and geo-hazards.     Abstract The majority of Mediterranean basins are overexploiting their water resources, and the situation is likely to worsen with the impact of climate change. Population growth, human development, and climate change are today the main drivers that increase the pressure on water resources, in both quantity and quality. At the same time, services such as hydropower and recreation are required from the hydrosystem, while the ecosystem is threatened. In a context of scarcity, water resource management can no longer be segmented between economic sectors. On the contrary, each stakeholder must share a common vision of the system so that water managers can respond to the many and often conflicting demands, and prepare for the future while taking into account extreme events such as droughts or floods. The task of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) has evolved into a comprehensive framework involving stakeholders in different phases to build well-informed decisions together. The tools that can help the process are Decision Support Systems (DSS), which integrate science and models into a holistic approach. The purpose of this chapter is to introduce water managers to numerical methods and tools that can facilitate the assessment of alternatives and the development of plans in the context of increasingly limited water resources around the Mediterranean. After an introduction to IWRM concepts, we will discuss the main topics and issues regarding integrated modeling for DSS. We will then describe the current scenario of integrated modeling around the Mediterranean area and will examine two examples of model implementations. Firstly, in Morocco, an assessment and scenario of water resources for agriculture is based on the use of remote sensing time series. Secondly, in Tunisia, assessment and scenario of water pollutants and erosion are carried out. At the end of the chapter, we will try to identify some key points that limit the use of integrated modeling by water planners.

    International audience; The objective of this study was to investigate chemical, biological and eco-toxicological parameters of a compost produced through the co-composting of dewatered primary sludge (DPS) and date palm waste to evaluate in which extent it can exploited as a bio-fertilizer. DPS and date palm waste were co-composted in aerobic conditions for 210 days. Physico-chemical parameters were evaluated during composting (total organic carbon, total nitrogen, pH, available forms of phosphorus). Furthermore, heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Cr, Pb, Ni, Zn) and antibiotics (fluoroquinolones, macrolides and tetracyclines) content were analyzed in the DPS. To evaluate the genotoxicity of substrates, Vicia faba micronucleus test was carried out. Single and combined toxicities of a mixture of antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, enroflxacin, nalidixic acid, roxithromycin and sulfapyridin) and chromium (Cr2 (SO4)3 and K2Cr2O7) were examined. Although the final compost product showed a significant decrease of the genotoxicity, almost 50% of the micronucleus frequency still remained, which could be explained by the persistence of several recalcitrant compounds such as chromium and some antibiotics. Overall, the presence of antibiotics and chromium showed that some specific combination of contaminants represent an ecological risk for soil health and ecosystems even at environmentally negligible concentrations.

    International audience; Primary sludge (PS) from the wastewater treatment plants is constituted of organic matter and other nutrients that could be reused as soil fertilizers. However, primary sludge amendment is hampered due to the presence of pathogens that could be responsible for several infections in various ways depending on the prevalence of the human sources. This study investigates helminth eggs (HE) removal and inactivation efficiency by co-composting. So, PS was mixed with date palm waste as a bulking material at a 1:1 volume ratio. The C/N ratio decreased from 25:1 to 12:1 and temperatures above 50ºC were observed since 33 days. The initial concentration of HE eggs in the PS is 135.9 per 10 g DR. Microscopic examination of the PS, according to the Bailenger method, showed the presence of nematodes and Cestodes represented by: Ascaris lombricoïde, Ancylostomes duodenale, Trichuris trichiura, Capilaria spp, Hymenolepis nana, Taenia saginata, and Ascaris lombricoïde. After 60 days of co-composting, the charge of parasites was reduced to 18 eggs per 10 g per DR. The viability of ascaris eggs was examined using a light microscope and the percentage of the embryonated eggs was determined. No viable eggs were observed in the final compost. The result corroborates the WHO guidelines for the application of the composted sewage sludge safely for agriculture purposes.

    L’utilisation de coquilles d’huîtres comme support, d’origine naturelle, dans les réacteurs biologiques à biomasse fixe a été étudiée en présence de champignons Aspergillus niger et Penicillium chrysogenum pour le traitement des effluents de laiteries. L’objectif étant de comparer les performances d’épuration entre plusieurs traitements biologiques à biofilms, différents par l’utilisation de supports de colonisation et aussi par leurs conceptions. Le support commercial commun Kadnes (Kaldnes K3) a été ainsi étudié dans le cas de traitements biologiques du même effluent, et les performances d’abattement de la pollution organique dans les deux cas ont été comparées. Les résultats révèlent des performances comparables après 24 heures de traitement. Ces rendements étaient meilleurs comparés au traitement biologique qui n’utilise pas de supports. The use of oyster shells as a naturally applied as the media in biomass-fixed biological reactors has been studied in the presence of Aspergillus niger and Penicillium chrysogenum fungi for the treatment of dairy effluents. The objective is to compare the purification performance between several biofilms biological treatments, different by the use of colonization supports and also by their design. The common Kadnes commercial media (Kaldnes K3) was thus studied in the case of biological treatment of the same effluent, and the abatement performances of the organic pollution in both cases were compared. The results show comparable performance after 24 hours of treatment. These yields were better compared to the biological treatment that does not use media of colonization.

    Summarization: Mediterranean-African countries (MACs) face a major water crisis. The annual renewable water resources are close to the 500 m3/capita threshold of absolute water scarcity, and water withdrawals exceed total renewable water resources by 30%. Such a low water availability curbs economic development in agriculture, which accounts for 86% of freshwater consumption. The analysis of the current situation of wastewater treatment, irrigation, and water management in MACs and of the research projects targeted to these countries indicates the need for 1) an enhanced capacity to analyze water stress, 2) the development of water management strategies capable of including wastewater reuse, and 3) development of locally adapted water treatment and irrigation technologies. This analysis shaped the MADFORWATER project (www.madforwater.eu), whose goal is to develop a set of integrated technological and management solutions to enhance wastewater treatment, wastewater reuse for irrigation, and water efficiency in agriculture in Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia. MADFORWATER develops and adapts technologies for the production of irrigation-quality water from drainage canals and municipal, agro-industrial, and industrial wastewaters and technologies for water efficiency and reuse in agriculture, initially validated at laboratory scale, to 3 hydrological basins in the selected MACs. Selected technologies will be further adapted and validated in 4 demonstration plants of integrated wastewater treatment and reuse. Integrated strategies for wastewater treatment and reuse targeted to the selected basins are developed, and guidelines for the development of integrated water management strategies in other basins of the 3 target MACs will be produced. The social and technical suitability of the developed technologies and nontechnological tools in relation to the local context is evaluated with the participation of MAC stakeholders and partners. Guidelines on economic instruments and policies for the effective implementation of the proposed water management solutions in the target MACs will be developed.     Olive processing wastewaters (OPW), namely olive mill wastewater (OMW) and table-olive wastewaters (TOW) were evaluated for their antibacterial activity against five Gram-positive and two Gram-negative bacteria using the standard disc diffusion and thin layer chromatography (TLC)-bioautography assays. Disc diffusion screening and bioautography of OMW were compared to the phenolic extracts of table-olive brines. Positive activity against S. aureus was demonstrated. The optimization of chromatographic separation revealed that hexane/acetone in the ratio of 4:6 was the most effective for phenolic compounds separation. A HPLC-MS analysis was performed showing that only two compounds, hydroxytyrosol and tyrosol, were the predominant phenolic compounds in all OPW. The phenolic extract of OMW generated by a semi-modern process showed the highest free radical-scavenging activity (DPPH assay) compared to the other phenolic extracts. It is apparent from the present study that OPW are a rich source of antioxidants suitable for use in food, cosmetic or pharmaceutical applications.

    The growth of the human population is causing an exponential increase in the need for food. Fertilizers are one of the most important elements to meet this increased demand and to ensure global food security. Many enhanced efficiency fertilizers, such as controlled-release fertilizers (CRFs) have been developed. Although these fertilizers offer many advantages over prior generations, their high cost of production as well as unfavorable effects on the environment and soil quality have limited their use. To mitigate these issues, CRFs based on biopolymers (CRF@BB) represent a new generation of fertilizers produced by coating the granules with biopolymers. In addition to controlling the nutrient release rate, these products also enhance the soil quality and they reduce the negative effects associated with conventional fertilizers. This review summarizes the recent advances in biopolymers and derived biopolymers used in the area of CRF@BB, the coating technologies, and the parameters governing the release behavior through organic coating materials, as well as the effect of coated CRFs on the soil and plants growth.     ABSTRACTThe use of treated wastewater (TWW) as an alternative resource to fresh water (FW) for irrigation purposes is becoming increasingly important, especially in semiarid and arid regions. However, achieving success in crop production largely depends on the adoption of appropriate on‐farm management strategies aimed at optimizing crop yields, maintaining soil productivity and safeguarding the environment. For this purpose, predictive models are of particular interest. A safe irrigation management (SIM) model developed and tested in this research was used to schedule irrigation under controlled management tailored to the use of 1) TWW and 2) FW and to reproduce farmers' strategies. These management strategies aim to improve actual irrigation practices, accounting for water quality, soil characteristics, and crop yield. The results of the application of SIM on a citrus farm in Souss‐Massa, Morocco, show that the management strategy adopted by farmers withdraws considerable amounts of water and results in substantial drainage volumes compared to those in the SIM strategy. In the specific case of TWW, the strategy simulated by the SIM model resulted in a decrease in yield of approximately 4%, compared to the 23% decrease derived from the farmers' traditional strategy. Moreover, SIM allowed for great savings in terms of fertilizing elements and for the reduction in the movement of water and salts beyond the root zone, usually considered the main source of groundwater contamination. These results confirm the appropriateness of using prediction models and the accuracy of the SIM model in adapting irrigation strategies to TWW, which will be an integral part of the strategies that encourage their use in irrigated agriculture. Here, the lack of research on newly formed cavities has exacerbated the situation. The limited studies using remote sensing or geophysical methods to determine the degree of karstification and vulnerability of this environment fail to provide the spatial extent and depth location of individual karst cavities. In order to contribute to the effort of sinkhole risk reduction in TMA, we employed remote sensing and geophysical surveys to integrate electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and self-potential (SP) for subsurface characterization of four sinkholes identified in the Causse of El Hajeb. The results revealed the existence of sinkholes, both visible and non-accessible at the surface, in carbonate rocks. The sinkholes exhibited distinct morphologies, with depths reaching 35 m. Topography, geographic coordinates and land cover information extracted on remote sensing data demonstrated that these cavities were developed in depressions in which agricultural activities are regularly performed. The fusion of these methods benefits from remote sensing in geophysical surveys, particularly in acquisition, georeferencing, processing and interpretation of geophysical data.     Abstract The majority of Mediterranean basins are overexploiting their water resources, and the situation is likely to worsen with the impact of climate change. Population growth, human development, and climate change are today the main drivers that increase the pressure on water resources, in both quantity and quality. At the same time, services such as hydropower and recreation are required from the hydrosystem, while the ecosystem is threatened. In a context of scarcity, water resource management can no longer be segmented between economic sectors. On the contrary, each stakeholder must share a common vision of the system so that water managers can respond to the many and often conflicting demands, and prepare for the future while taking into account extreme events such as droughts or floods. The task of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) has evolved into a comprehensive framework involving stakeholders in different phases to build well-informed decisions together. The tools that can help the process are Decision Support Systems (DSS), which integrate science and models into a holistic approach. The purpose of this chapter is to introduce water managers to numerical methods and tools that can facilitate the assessment of alternatives and the development of plans in the context of increasingly limited water resources around the Mediterranean. After an introduction to IWRM concepts, we will discuss the main topics and issues regarding integrated modeling for DSS. We will then describe the current scenario of integrated modeling around the Mediterranean area and will examine two examples of model implementations. Firstly, in Morocco, an assessment and scenario of water resources for agriculture is based on the use of remote sensing time series. Secondly, in Tunisia, assessment and scenario of water pollutants and erosion are carried out. At the end of the chapter, we will try to identify some key points that limit the use of integrated modeling by water planners.

    International audience; The objective of this study was to investigate chemical, biological and eco-toxicological parameters of a compost produced through the co-composting of dewatered primary sludge (DPS) and date palm waste to evaluate in which extent it can exploited as a bio-fertilizer. DPS and date palm waste were co-composted in aerobic conditions for 210 days. Physico-chemical parameters were evaluated during composting (total organic carbon, total nitrogen, pH, available forms of phosphorus). Furthermore, heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Cr, Pb, Ni, Zn) and antibiotics (fluoroquinolones, macrolides and tetracyclines) content were analyzed in the DPS. To evaluate the genotoxicity of substrates, Vicia faba micronucleus test was carried out. Single and combined toxicities of a mixture of antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, enroflxacin, nalidixic acid, roxithromycin and sulfapyridin) and chromium (Cr2 (SO4)3 and K2Cr2O7) were examined. Although the final compost product showed a significant decrease of the genotoxicity, almost 50% of the micronucleus frequency still remained, which could be explained by the persistence of several recalcitrant compounds such as chromium and some antibiotics. Overall, the presence of antibiotics and chromium showed that some specific combination of contaminants represent an ecological risk for soil health and ecosystems even at environmentally negligible concentrations.

    International audience; Primary sludge (PS) from the wastewater treatment plants is constituted of organic matter and other nutrients that could be reused as soil fertilizers. However, primary sludge amendment is hampered due to the presence of pathogens that could be responsible for several infections in various ways depending on the prevalence of the human sources. This study investigates helminth eggs (HE) removal and inactivation efficiency by co-composting. So, PS was mixed with date palm waste as a bulking material at a 1:1 volume ratio. The C/N ratio decreased from 25:1 to 12:1 and temperatures above 50ºC were observed since 33 days. The initial concentration of HE eggs in the PS is 135.9 per 10 g DR. Microscopic examination of the PS, according to the Bailenger method, showed the presence of nematodes and Cestodes represented by: Ascaris lombricoïde, Ancylostomes duodenale, Trichuris trichiura, Capilaria spp, Hymenolepis nana, Taenia saginata, and Ascaris lombricoïde. After 60 days of co-composting, the charge of parasites was reduced to 18 eggs per 10 g per DR. The viability of ascaris eggs was examined using a light microscope and the percentage of the embryonated eggs was determined. No viable eggs were observed in the final compost. The result corroborates the WHO guidelines for the application of the composted sewage sludge safely for agriculture purposes.

    L’utilisation de coquilles d’huîtres comme support, d’origine naturelle, dans les réacteurs biologiques à biomasse fixe a été étudiée en présence de champignons Aspergillus niger et Penicillium chrysogenum pour le traitement des effluents de laiteries. L’objectif étant de comparer les performances d’épuration entre plusieurs traitements biologiques à biofilms, différents par l’utilisation de supports de colonisation et aussi par leurs conceptions. Le support commercial commun Kadnes (Kaldnes K3) a été ainsi étudié dans le cas de traitements biologiques du même effluent, et les performances d’abattement de la pollution organique dans les deux cas ont été comparées. Les résultats révèlent des performances comparables après 24 heures de traitement. Ces rendements étaient meilleurs comparés au traitement biologique qui n’utilise pas de supports. The use of oyster shells as a naturally applied as the media in biomass-fixed biological reactors has been studied in the presence of Aspergillus niger and Penicillium chrysogenum fungi for the treatment of dairy effluents. The objective is to compare the purification performance between several biofilms biological treatments, different by the use of colonization supports and also by their design. The common Kadnes commercial media (Kaldnes K3) was thus studied in the case of biological treatment of the same effluent, and the abatement performances of the organic pollution in both cases were compared. The results show comparable performance after 24 hours of treatment. These yields were better compared to the biological treatment that does not use media of colonization.

    Summarization: Mediterranean-African countries (MACs) face a major water crisis. The annual renewable water resources are close to the 500 m3/capita threshold of absolute water scarcity, and water withdrawals exceed total renewable water resources by 30%. Such a low water availability curbs economic development in agriculture, which accounts for 86% of freshwater consumption. The analysis of the current situation of wastewater treatment, irrigation, and water management in MACs and of the research projects targeted to these countries indicates the need for 1) an enhanced capacity to analyze water stress, 2) the development of water management strategies capable of including wastewater reuse, and 3) development of locally adapted water treatment and irrigation technologies. This analysis shaped the MADFORWATER project (www.madforwater.eu), whose goal is to develop a set of integrated technological and management solutions to enhance wastewater treatment, wastewater reuse for irrigation, and water efficiency in agriculture in Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia. MADFORWATER develops and adapts technologies for the production of irrigation-quality water from drainage canals and municipal, agro-industrial, and industrial wastewaters and technologies for water efficiency and reuse in agriculture, initially validated at laboratory scale, to 3 hydrological basins in the selected MACs. Selected technologies will be further adapted and validated in 4 demonstration plants of integrated wastewater treatment and reuse. Integrated strategies for wastewater treatment and reuse targeted to the selected basins are developed, and guidelines for the development of integrated water management strategies in other basins of the 3 target MACs will be produced. The social and technical suitability of the developed technologies and nontechnological tools in relation to the local context is evaluated with the participation of MAC stakeholders and partners.     Olive processing wastewaters (OPW), namely olive mill wastewater (OMW) and table-olive wastewaters (TOW) were evaluated for their antibacterial activity against five Gram-positive and two Gram-negative bacteria using the standard disc diffusion and thin layer chromatography (TLC)-bioautography assays. Disc diffusion screening and bioautography of OMW were compared to the phenolic extracts of table-olive brines. Positive activity against S. aureus was demonstrated. The optimization of chromatographic separation revealed that hexane/acetone in the ratio of 4:6 was the most effective for phenolic compounds separation. A HPLC-MS analysis was performed showing that only two compounds, hydroxytyrosol and tyrosol, were the predominant phenolic compounds in all OPW. The phenolic extract of OMW generated by a semi-modern process showed the highest free radical-scavenging activity (DPPH assay) compared to the other phenolic extracts. It is apparent from the present study that OPW are a rich source of antioxidants suitable for use in food, cosmetic or pharmaceutical applications.
