AbstractThe oils and solvents are the main components of the printing ink, and the chemical composition of the ink could be harmful or toxic to human health and the environment. Therefore, there is an increasing demand to develop inks containing green, biobased, sustainable, and renewable raw materials instead of petrochemical substances. In this study, flaxseed oil (FO), pomegranate seed oil, plum kernel oil (PKO), and grape seed oil (GSO) were selected to produce offset printing inks. Pinus pinaster (P. pinaster) resin was also used in the formulation of inks to examine the effects of natural resin on ink together with vegetable oils. The phenolic content was analyzed for the resin and oils to figure out their potential antioxidant and bioactive characteristics. Optical and rheological tests were applied to evaluate the printability of the inks. L*a*b*, ΔE, density, and gloss tests were performed for optical evaluation. The viscosity, tack, and rub resistance tests were applied to perform rheological analysis. The biobased, environmental friendly, and self‐drying (cold set) offset printing inks were obtained using natural pine resin and three different plant‐based oils FO, PKO, and GSO. The printability analysis of the inks figured out the potential usage of plant‐based oils in the offset printing ink formulation.

AbstractMicroalgae (including cyanobacteria) are promising organisms for sustainable products for use as feedstocks for food, feed, fine chemicals, and biofuels. They can synthesize a broad range of products with medium‐ to high‐value market price such as β‐1,3‐glucan polysaccharide, single‐cell‐protein, carotenoids and phycobilin pigments, and long‐chain polyunsaturated fatty acids that are commercialized in the food industry as dietary supplements and functional foods, in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries as cosmaceuticals and flavorants, and in the therapeutic field as nutraceutical compounds. These microorganisms are also exceptional producers of omega‐3 and omega‐6 fatty acids such as eicosapentaenoic, docosahexaenoic, and arachidonic acids that have been linked to several human health benefits. The aim of this paper is to review the main existing high‐value products that can be derived from microalgae with a particular focus on food science and technology applications. It also describes the gross and fine chemical composition of various algal species and details the nutritive importance of selected constituents. Finally, nutritional quality standards and legislative provisions to ensure food safety in the use of algal biomass are presented.

AbstractCrop yield improvement is essential for feeding the growing world population without concomitant increases in land allocated to agriculture. Oil crops are critical components of food supply as well as non‐food applications. Oil palm is of particular value due to its significantly higher yield per unit area of land as compared to other oil crops. In the context of sustainable production of edible oils, this review will discuss the role of biochemical‐omics techniques, including metabolomics, transcriptomics and proteomics research for yield improvement through plant breeding; in particular, the unique challenges of the mesocarp‐oil bearing perennial crop, oil palm, are specifically discussed along with perspectives on what is needed for future crop improvement. Future oil crop improvement will need to go beyond classical trait selection, and omics research needs to go beyond looking at oil biosynthesis and fruit development. We need to explore carbon supply and flux, plant stress response, nutrient uptake and water use through a combination of genetics, biochemistry, epigenetics and gene interaction coupled to more detailed and continuous phenotypic data analysis.
