[Methodology] We selected 40 paired olive groves from 20 localities, covering a cultivated area circa 35 km2 and encompassing a distance of 310 km between the most distant ones, hence widely distributed across the Guadalquivir Valley (Andalucía, Spain). Localities were selected to cover a wide gradient in landscape complexity, from landscapes dominated by olive groves to landscapes including a large fraction of natural (forests, scrublands, streams and pastures with native plants) or semi-natural habitats (gullies, vegetated edges and field margins) or other woody and annual crops. At each locality, the pair of olive groves differed in the herb cover management (20 low-intensity and 20 intensive groves) in 2016 while some of them changed their management in 2019, while sharing the same landscape context. Farm size and climatic and edaphic condition varied between localities but were relatively similar between the pair of farms within locality. Low-intensity management involved the maintenance of the ground herb cover most of the year through agroecological practices, such as grazing (mainly with sheep), mowing or stand maintaining between olive trees. Some of these low-intensity managed olive farms where also organic when, in addition, there was no use of pesticides nor synthesis fertilizers. In contrast, intensive management persistently reduced herb cover by herbicides and/or recurrent tillage. The landscape of each locality was classified in simple (characterized by vast extensions of olive groves with very few natural habitat patches), intermediate (olive groves are intermingled with annual crops and with greater extension of natural habitats) or complex (olive groves are scarcer and the area covered by forests, shrublands, streams and grasslands with native plants is larger). The community of herb species was monthly sampled in each olive groves from April to June in 2016 and 2019, using 1-m2 quadrats. We surveyed 4-6 herbs quadrats per grove (in olive field habitats), depending on the orchard size (4 sampling points in small groves [10 ha]) and 2-4 herbs quadrats per olive grove in semi-natural habitats adjacent to olive field. Substantial work was done in the lab for the classification of the many species that we were not able to determine at species level in the field. BBDD_Herbs_sps_habitat_farm.csv ' This data set was compilated with funds by MICINN through European Regional Development Fund [SUMHAL, LIFEWATCH-2019-09-CSIC-4, POPE 2014-2020] [Work Package 9. Task 9.3.2. Model impact of land use change]. Data comes mainly from LIFE project OLIVARES VIVOS (LIFE14 NAT/ ES/1001094) of the European Commission and complemented partially with additional surveys under LIFEWATCH SUMHAL. CSIC is acknowledged for supporting Open Access publication. Our aim was to characterize the species composition of ground herb covers present in the olive groves and their semi-natural adjacent habitats of the southern Iberian Peninsula (Andalucia, Spain), according to herb cover management and landscape complexity of each grove. We selected 40 paired olive farms from 20 localities across Andalucía. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) asked the Panel on Biological Hazards (BIOHAZ) to deliver a scientific Opinion on the maintenance of the list of qualified presumption of safety (QPS) biological agents. The QPS approach was developed by the EFSA Scientific Committee to provide a harmonised generic pre-evaluation to support safety risk assessments of biological agents intentionally introduced into the food and feed chain, in support of the concerned scientific Panels and Units in the frame of market authorisations. The taxonomic identity, body of knowledge, the safety concerns in relation to pathogenicity and virulence, and the safety for the environment of those microbiological agents are assessed. Safety concerns identified for a respective taxonomic unit (TU) are, where possible and reasonable in number, reflected as ‘qualifications’ that are assessed at the strain level by the EFSA’s scientific Panels. Note: As of January 2022 the updated list is provided only as excel file format. The “list of microorganisms with QPS status” first established in 2007, has been revised and updated annually until 2014 via QPS Opinions; since 2014 the updates are carried out and published every 3 years. If new information is retrieved from extended literature searches (ELS) that would change the QPS status of a TU or its qualifications, this is also published in the Panel Statement covering the previous 6-months period. The ELS protocol can be found at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3607190 and the Search strategies are available at: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3607193. The QPS Panel Statement also includes the evaluation of microbiological agents notified to EFSA within the 6-month period for an assessment for feed additives, food enzymes, food additives and flavourings, and novel foods or plant protection products for a possible QPS status. The new QPS status recommendations are incorporated into the 2019 updated “list of microorganisms with QPS status” is available in this upload. The list of “Microbiological agents as notified to EFSA” from 2007, in the context of technical dossiers to EFSA Units, for intentional use in feed and/or food or as sources of food and feed additives, enzymes and plant protection products (PPPs) for safety assessment can be found at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3607184. Centroid data used for the analysis in Roos et al. Eco Lett. Transects, up to 99 m in length (dependent on the field's length), were surveyed in linear stable landscape features (field, track or ditch margins) to estimate vole abundance from November 2011 until September 2017. Each transect was divided into 3 m sections (33 in total) and the presence or absence of one or more signs of vole activity (i.e., latrines by burrows, fresh vegetation clippings, and recent burrow excavations) in each section was noted. The proportion of sections with signs of vole presence per transect was then used as the abundance index. The number of surveys carried out at any time varied adaptively with the perceived risk of an outbreak (according to changes in estimated abundance in previous monitoring surveys). The response variable typically used in all models is proportional growth rate (r_{t,i}, where is the abundance index for site at time (Royama 1992; Berryman 2002). A benefit of using r_{t,i}, rather than ln(N_{t,i}), is that any multiplicative effects of site quality are cancelled out, provided they are constant over time. To calculate r_{t,i}, vole abundance indices are required at the same location in successive time periods (i.e., N_{t,i} and N_{t+1,i}). Given that exact transect locations were rarely reused in successive months, and all transect measurements took place throughout the year rather than discrete seasons, the data had to be aggregated to consistent locations and times to allow growth rate to be calculated. As such, transects were temporally aggregated into a respective yearly quarter (e.g., January to March 2014). Transects were spatially aggregated by sequentially selecting an unassigned transect as a reference point for the ith centroid and assigning all unassigned transects within a 5 km radius to the ith centroid, and repeating until all transects had been allocated (see Figure 2 for a summary of the number of transects assigned to each centroid, centroid locations, and time series of growth rate of each centroid). Once complete, the mean Julian day, X and Y UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) and the mean index was calculated for all transects assigned to each centroid for each time period. Where a centroid had successive values of N_{t,i} and N_{t+1,i} available, the corresponding proportional growth rate was calculated. A constant of 3.03 was added to N_{t,i} to avoid zero entries (3.03 was the lowest non-zero value of N observed). The final dataset consisted of 3,751 observations. See README for details of data formatting.

SHui (Soil Hydrology research platform underpinning innovation) ran from September 2018 to August 2022 to address best use of soil and water in European and Chinese cropping systems via transdisciplinary research from plot to regional scales. Combining long-term experiments and modelling analysis at different scales evaluated the impact of Best Management Practices (BMPs) on water-limited crop productivity and soil retention, including socio-economic issues. The project also developed tools to facilitate implementation of soil and water saving technologies in specific farming situations. The objective of this in-person meeting in Brussels is to present the main project findings to stakeholders and policy makers, as well as to discuss in a round table the issues related to use of scarce water resources in agriculture. This project is co-funded by the European Commission within H2020 Framework Programme (Project: 773903). The increasing disturbances in monocultures around the world are testimony to their instability under global change. Many studies have claimed that temporal stability of productivity increase with species richness, although the ecological fundaments have mainly been investigated through diversity experiments. To adequately manage forest ecosystems, it is necessary to have a comprehensive understanding of the effect of mixing species on the temporal stability of productivity and the way in which this it is influenced by climate conditions across large geographical areas. Here, we used a unique dataset of 261 stands combining pure and two-species mixtures of four relevant tree species over a wide range of climate conditions in Europe to examine the effect of species mixing on the level and temporal stability of productivity. Structural equation modelling was employed to further explore the direct and indirect influence of climate, overyielding, species asynchrony and additive effect (i.e. temporal stability expected from the species growth in monospecific stands) on temporal stability in mixed forests. We showed that by adding only one tree species to monocultures, the level (overyielding: +6%) and stability (temporal stability: +12%) of stand growth increased significantly. We identified the key effect of temperature on destabilizing stand growth, which may be mitigated by mixing species. We further confirmed asynchrony as the main driver of temporal stability in mixed stands, through both the additive effect and species interactions, which modify between-species asynchrony in mixtures in comparison to monocultures. Synthesis and applications. This study highlights the emergent properties associated with mixing two-species, which result in resource efficient and temporally stable production systems. We reveal the negative impact of mean temperature on temporal stability of forest productivity and how the stabilizing effect of mixing two species can counterbalance this impact. The overyielding and temporal stability of growth addressed in this paper are essential for ecosystem services closely linked with the level and rhythm of forest growth. Our results underline that mixing two species can be a realistic and effective nature-based climate solution, which could contribute towards meeting EU climate target policies. [Methods] The research unit is the forest stand. We used data from a total of 261 forest stands belonging to three triplet-transects across Europe. Each triplet consists of a plot established in a two species mixed stands, and two plots on the respective monospecific stands; the three stands are located close to each other under similar environmental conditions. The species composition of the mixtures changes in the three triplet-transects. The first transect covers monospecific and mixed stands of Fagus sylvatica and Pinus sylvestris (32 sites, 96 stands), the second of Quercus petraea and Pinus sylvestris (35 sites, 105 stands), and the third of Picea abies and Pinus sylvestris (20 sites, 60 stands). Plot sizes varies from 0-02 to 0.15 ha depending on stand density a local site characteristics. In each plot the diameter of all trees was measured, and two increment cores per tree were taken at a 1.3 m stem height in a sample of approximately 20 trees per species and plot. Annual ring widths were measured and cross-dated using standardized dendrochronological techniques. The studied period was 2000-2013 for the beech-pine transect and 2004-2017 for the oak-pine and spruce-pine transects (except in five triplets where the period was 2000-2013), the last year corresponding to triplet establishment. Using data from cored trees, tree diameter increment-diameter models were fitted by year, species and plot to estimate diameter increments of noncored trees for the studied period. Dead trees during the last 14 years were estimated using stumps, standing and lying dead trees, and their decomposition status. Based on measured tree diameters and annual diameter increments we estimated species and stand annual basal area (BA) and basal area growth (BAI), which conforms the dataset. Annual climate data were obtained from meteorological weather stations located in the proximity of each triplet (50 triplets). When local station data were not available, national digital climatic atlas data (24 triplets) or more general gridded data (13 triplets) were used (mostly CRU gridded database). For each triplet mean and standard deviation of annual precipitation (P) and mean annual temperature (T) for the studied period were calculated.

[Usage Notes] The are presented in an excel-table which can be open freely in different ways (open office, google docs, etc.). Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades. Peer reviewed
