A hybrid classification method using satellite images and other variables has been used. The results contribute interesting new data on the influence of compression on the quality of the produced cartography, both from a "by pixel" perspective and regarding the homogeneity of the obtained polygons. The classified area in classifications only carried out with radiometric variables or with NDVI and humidity (for crops) increases as image compression increases, although the increase is smaller for JPEG2000 formats and for crops. On the other hand, the classified area decreases in classifications which also take into account topoclimatic variables (for forests). Overall image accuracy diminishes at high compression ratios (CR), although the point of inflection occurs at different CR depending on the compression format. As a rule, the JPEG2000 format gives better results quantitatively for forests (accuracy and classified area) and visually (images with less "salt and pepper" effect) for both land covers.

This paper examines how households trade off migration and savings when subject to exogenous violence. The authors propose that households under violence decide jointly on migration and saving, because a higher asset-stock is more difficult to carry to a new place. When confronted with exogenous violence, households are expected to consider migration, and reduce their assets, both in order to reduce their exposure to violence, and to make migration easier. In some cases, after a migration decision has been taken, savings can increase as a function of violence to ensure a minimum bundle to carry. Empirical evidence from rich Colombian micro-data supports the conceptual framework for violence that carries a displacement threat, such as guerrilla attacks.

The fieldwork for this report consisted of a household energy survey of households living in 180 villages in six states (Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan and West Bengal). The report was initiated in response to concerns that energy strategies for rural India were not progressing toward modern energy use.It examines energy use, including renewable energy, to determine if households in rural areas have access to modern forms of energy use. In addition, analysis and recommendations are targeted toward poor households, who spend a significant proportion of their time and income on energy. Despite urbanization, 74 percent of India (some 120 million households) reside in rural areas, villagers still depend on traditional fuels to meet their energy needs. Fuelwood, crop residues, dung and other traditional fuels, as presently used, have inherent disadvantages: collection is arduous and time-consuming; combustion is difficult to control; and cooking captures a fraction of these fuels' available energy. Today, rural people who switch to kerosene and LPG for cooking spend about one hour per day collecting fuelwood and purchasing wood at local markets. The Government is committed to improving energy services in rural areas, however, the cross-sectoral nature of the problems complicates solutions.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.euapps Other research product2021 United States EnglisheScholarship, University of California Authors: Rosemond, Rainey Fleming;Rosemond, Rainey Fleming; This study determined effects of adding sodium monensin, the active ingredient in Rumensin 90TM, to a contemporary California diet fed to high producing early lactation multiparity dairy cattle on dry matter (DM) intake, milk and milk constituent yield, and potential environmental impacts. Two five-week experimental periods were used in a replicated 2 x 2 Latin square on a dairy farm near Hanford (CA, USA). Four ‘high group’ pens (i.e. cows moved from fresh pens but not confirmed pregnant) were used. Rations were formulated identically, except for the mineral premix which contained, or did not contain, 11 mg monensin/kg DM. Milk composition and yield was collected one day prior to each period end. Blood samples were collected from the tail vein of 18 cows 2 days prior to each period end during morning lock-up and analyzed for plasma volatile fatty acids, glucose and amino acids. Milk production was 4.27 kg/cow/day higher (P<0.01) with monensin feeding, with no change in composition. The digestible energy (DE; MJ/kg DM) and net energy (NEL; MJ/kg DM) differed numerically (P≤0.15) suggesting higher DE availability and post absorptive utilization efficiency (i.e. NEL). Production responses appear to have been driven by up regulation of lactose production supported by lower blood plasma concentrations of acetic, butyric, propionic and glutamic acids (P≤0.05), and higher plasma glucose (P=0.10) in cows fed monensin. In contrast, plasma threonine and tryptophan were higher in cows fed monensin (P≤0.05). Blood plasma metabolite levels were likely driven by increased ruminal degradation of organic matter, especially neutral detergent fiber (P<0.05). However, body condition score change, DM intake and microbial crude protein output were not monensin impacted. Incorporation of monensin to diets of lactating dairy cattle in California could maintain milk yield but allow reduction of cow numbers by ~160,000 with an associated estimated reduction of 19.6 M kg methane annually, compared to cows not feed monensin.
