A wide literature on digital transformation in manufacturing and services has explored its impact on long term changes in labour demand and skills and on productivity and growth. A new perspective on the ongoing digital transformation has been prompted by Oecd to highlight specific metrics needed to assess its impact on the economy and society and to support innovat on policies. Drawing on these contributions, this paper aims to shed light on the impact of digital transformation on the reorganization and relocation of the various segments of the automotive supply chain. In particular, it will focus on the effects generated by different paces of adoption of digital technologies in this supply chain, with regard to both the various segments and the various sizes of companies, in different countries. The causes of this heterogeneity will be discussed and the implications for the full impact of the ongoing transformation will be considered in relation to industrial and innovation policy in Europe. The paper addresses the issue by reviewing empirical evidence on the automotive supply chain, which includes the most advanced manufacturing and service companies that are now adopting digital technologies. Evidence from case studies in the automotive industry in China, Germany, Italy and Japan will help in identifying the main challenges of digital transformation for European countries, which will involve a strongly interrelated supply chain both within and outside Europe.

Recent breakthroughs in the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) have initiated heated debates regarding its governance. As of today, the success of AI relies on machine learning – the ability of algorithms to learn from, and find patterns in, large amounts of data. Consequently, governance of AI will in practice mean policies regarding both the design and access to algorithms, as well as collection and usage of information. Regarding the latter, the European Union (EU) has put in place a comprehensive normative framework: the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)1, applicable since 25 May 2018. Based on the discussion that took place during the School of Transnational Governance’s High-Level Policy Dialogue on 26 June 2018, we present three actionable recommendations for global and local policymakers coming to grasp with the questions of AI Governance

Digital connectivity – loosely defined as connecting people through digital means promises to enhance our quality of life, as envisaged in Japan’s ‘Society 5.0’, which aims to spur economic growth and solve social problems digitally. On the other hand, digital connectivity also creates challenges and demands a quest for optimum equilibrium between economic growth and national as well as human security. The COVID-19 pandemic which erupted in late 2019 has accelerated world dependence on digital connectivity in order to sustain human contact. Digital means have allowed us to continue our lives, work and pleasure connections, and have simultaneously expanded digital risks at home and globally. The COVID-19 scenario has also demonstrated how digital technology can even threaten our sovereignty and basic values such as freedom, democracy, privacy, human rights and dignity. Japan and the EU approach the digital age with a common emphasis on leading standards to set and promote a human-centred digital connectivity. The two zones can cooperate bilaterally and beyond in responding to challenges on digital connectivity, as is stipulated in three key documents, namely Japan-EU Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), Japan-EU Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA) and Japan-EU Partnership

This research would not have been possible without the financial support of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Italy, the International Alliance for the Protection of Heritage in Conflict Areas Foundation (ALIPH), The International Association for Mediterranean and Oriental Studies (ISMEO), The University of Siena and the University of Padua. The generosity and support of these institutions are greatly appreciated. Particular thanks are offered to the State Board of Antiquities and Heritage (Baghdad and Nineveh Office) in Iraq for the scientific collaboration, constant support and valuable advice. The research team was builded by Berlioz S. (ISMEO), Vidale M.(Department of Cultural Heritage: Archaeology and History of Art, Cinema and Music, University of Padua (Italy), Adib Fateh Ali (Freelance), Al-Lyla R. (State Board of Antiquities and Heritage (Iraq), Abbo al-Araj A. (State Board of Antiquities and Heritage (Iraq), Bianchi A. (Italian Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities, General Secretariat). Archaeological heritage has long been threatened by damage or destruction during armed conflicts. Recently, however, deliberate destruction has increasingly become a major part of daily threats in some areas. In that context these datasets describe the results of a programme of remote sensing of damage at Nineveh, within a wider research initiative involving six years of monitoring in northern Iraq. Analysis of satellite imagery, low-and level airphotography observation were combined in a comprehensive assessment of the damage. These datasets present an updated topographic map of Nineveh and its city walls, with a summary of the damage encountered.
