    This dataset contains the parameterization of a no-policy baseline scenario of the global 11-regional MESSAGEix-GLOBIOM integrated assessment model. Regions, time periods, commodities, technologies and relations included in this model are described in a separate repository. The dataset relies on the MESSAGEix modeling framework (Huppmann et al. 2019) and can be imported into MESSAGEix via the read_excel() functionality, for which a tutorial is available, or via snapshot.load() as described here. After the import the scenario can be solved and modified to create new scenarios. Note that the published scenario as included in the ENGAGE global scenarios dataset has been run with a release candidate of version 3.4.0 of MESSAGEix. Removed superfluous/unallowed white spaces in unit names. This allows reporting workflows to function with newly created databases.

  • Copy of an X-Rite ColorChecker and a Q-13 Grey Scale, taken with the Pentax K-1 and a Schneider-Kreuznach HM 4.5/90mm lens under cross-polarized illumination with two Walimex Niova 600 Plus Daylight LED light panels. The ColorChecker part serves for making a calibrated linear DNG profile, to be used in the Raw conversion process. The profile is generated with the Adobe DNG Profile Editor, version 1.0.0.47 beta. The grey scale is used to determine the best exposure. The complete workflow involves: (1) Raw conversion of the DNG files in Adobe Camera Raw with the calibrated linear profile and white balance values based on the M patch of the grey scale; (2) applying a flat frame in order to compensate for uneven illumination and lens vignetting; (3) applying a contrast curve in Photoshop with approximate RGB target values (in AdobeRGB) of 245/245/245 for the A patch, 118/118/118 for the M patch and 17/17/17 for the 19 patch (slight deviations are allowed because the grey scale is not always perfectly neutral). All values in these processing steps remain the same for one copying session with fixed magnification, f-stop and exposure time, the same lens, and no changes in illumination, and hence can be automated via a Photoshop action. They have to be recalibrated when magnification is changed, except for the white balance. The profile can be reused as long as the illumination remains unchanged; differences in colour rendering of lenses can be compensated for by adjusting the white balance. The processed image files are saved and archived in AdobeRGB (1998) colour space as TIFF files with 16 bits per channel depth in order to allow for further editing without compromising image quality. The image fidelity that can be attained using this workflow with the 36 MP Pentax K-1 in its Pixelshift mode and with suitable lenses is far superior to what most desktop flatbed scanners can deliver. This is due not only to the overall quality of the camera’s output but also to the ability to control and optimize lighting conditions and to control every processing step. eda – Ethnographisches Datenarchiv/UB Wien eda – Ethnographic Data Archive/Vienna University Library

    Authors: RUSSO, Margherita;

    A wide literature on digital transformation in manufacturing and services has explored its impact on long term changes in labour demand and skills and on productivity and growth. A new perspective on the ongoing digital transformation has been prompted by Oecd to highlight specific metrics needed to assess its impact on the economy and society and to support innovat on policies. Drawing on these contributions, this paper aims to shed light on the impact of digital transformation on the reorganization and relocation of the various segments of the automotive supply chain. In particular, it will focus on the effects generated by different paces of adoption of digital technologies in this supply chain, with regard to both the various segments and the various sizes of companies, in different countries. The causes of this heterogeneity will be discussed and the implications for the full impact of the ongoing transformation will be considered in relation to industrial and innovation policy in Europe. The paper addresses the issue by reviewing empirical evidence on the automotive supply chain, which includes the most advanced manufacturing and service companies that are now adopting digital technologies. Evidence from case studies in the automotive industry in China, Germany, Italy and Japan will help in identifying the main challenges of digital transformation for European countries, which will involve a strongly interrelated supply chain both within and outside Europe.

    isapiens@home is a three layer platform composed by a Cloud layer, a Middle layer and a Physical layer designed to address issues related to Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and Internet of Things (IoT). isapiens@home hides heterogeneity by providing a Virtual Object concept, and addresses the distributed nature of CPS/IoT applications by introducing a distributed multi-agent system on top of the physical part. isapiens@home aims to get the computation close to the sources of information (i.e., the physical devices), thus decreasing the need for remote communications. Furthermore, it addresses the dynamic adaptivity requirements of CPS fostering the use of Swarm Intelligence algorithms. isapiens@home also exploits the Cloud to carry out high computational tasks when needed.

    Spraying in agriculture represents a societal challenge due to its negative impact in human and animal health and in environment. Increasing spraying efficiency towards the objective of "right time, right amount, right place", involves reduction of losses and, consequently, amount of phytopharmaceuticals used, water usage, and human and animal exposure to pesticides, and the increase of the spraying system availability while reducing labour costs. Furthermore, adoption of new ecological spraying treatments to increase both yield and treatment efficiency is desirable. Agriculture in rough terrain is also challenging, due to the steepness of some terrain, lack of space to manoeuvre, difficulties of communications due to natural obstacles and harsh atmospheric conditions associated. To cope with these challenges a consortium with complementary precision farming actors was formed for Slopebot project, bringing together steep slope vineyards associations (CERVIM and ADVID), robotics and agricultural machinery RTD institutions (INESC TEC, DFKI, and CNR - IMAMOTER), agrofood and vineyard RTD institutions (ceiA3 and IFV), robotics and agricultural machinery SMEs (TEKEVER-AS, IKNOWHOW, V.M.A., and KommTek Intelligente Lösungen), and an institution devoted to innovation in the sector (INOVISA). Slopebot's solution will be a safe and autonomous precision spraying tool integrated into a modular unmanned tractor (robotics platform). It will focus on steep slope vineyards but also looking for the applicability in other high-value permanent crops in rough terrain. Slopebot will bring the TRL of the technologies involved from 3 to 5. This increment is driven by five main RTD topics: localization and navigation system; advanced sprayer tool with Variable Rate Technology (VRT); safety systems; compliance and interoperability; and modularity. Slopebot will contribute to build up its market segment aligned to the European Strategic Robotics Agenda and create new business opportunities.

    Authors: RUSSO, Margherita;
