Organic materials play an important role in improving crop yield. However, due to variations in natural and field management practices, the impact of straw incorporation (NS) and biochar addition (NB) on soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration and global warming potential (GWP) remains uncertain. This meta-analysis synthesizes the findings from 112 published studies, encompassing 897 samples, to assess the effects of NS and NB on crop yield, SOC, and GWP. The results reveal that Northeast China has the highest SOC stocks (40.80 Mg ha

Cold regions are part of the earth's system characterized by the presence of snow and ice for at least part of the year. Many biochar applications in cold-regions agricultural sectors have been reported in China, Canada, Demark, Finland, Norway, Russia, Sweden, etc. The objective of this study was thus to comprehensively examine the previous studies of cold-region biochar technologies and their socio-economic and environmental benefits. This literature review showed that woody biochar from pine and spruce were common feedstocks with pyrolysis temperature of 550- 600 °C. 1 % and 28 t ha

Fertilisers and pesticides are major sources of the environmental harm that results from farming, yet it remains difficult to target reductions in their impacts without compromising food production. We suggest that calculating the ratio of agrochemical inputs to yield can provide an indication of the potential sustainability of farmland, with those areas that have high input relative to yield being considered as less sustainable. Here we design an approach to characterise such Input to Yield Ratios (IYR) for four inputs that can be plausibly linked to environmental impacts: the cumulative risk resulting from pesticide exposure for honeybees and for earthworms, and the amount of nitrogen or phosphorus fertiliser applied per unit area. We capitalise on novel national-scale data to assess IYR for wheat farming across all of England. High-resolution spatial patterns of IYR differed among the four inputs, but hotspots, where all four IYRs were high, were in key agricultural regions not usually characterised as having low suitability for cropping. By scaling the magnitude of each input against crop yield, the IYR does not penalise areas of high yield with higher inputs (important for food production), or areas with low yields but which are achieved with low inputs (important as low impact areas). Instead, the IYR provides a globally applicable framework for evaluating the broad patterns of trade-offs between production and environmental risk, as an indicator of the potential for harm, over large scales. Its use can thus inform targeting to improve agricultural sustainability, or where one might switch to other land uses such as ecosystem restoration.

The economic impacts of climate-induced heat stress on pig farming have not been sufficiently investigated, despite the significant threat it poses to the industry. In this study, we coupled consecutive years of county-scale meteorological data with operational-level economic data to estimate the impact of climate-induced heat stress on the productivity of the Chinese pig industry using a stochastic frontier production function model. Based on model results, we projected the impact of heat stress on pig production in 2030 and 2050 with and without technological advances. Results showed that heat stress has a significant negative impact on pig production, with southern regions being more affected. However, considering technological advances, losses will decrease by 21 % and 52 %, respectively, compared with the scenario without technological advances. Simultaneously, we calculated the costs of climate change mitigation and adaptation and found that increasing production inputs to reduce production losses from heat stress costs one-fifth of forgoing production losses. Therefore, we recommend a positive climate change response strategy.

One of the problematic outcomes of soil erosion is sedimentation in stream channels adjacent to agricultural areas. Excess sediments routinely dredged are subsequently dumped in the riparian zone, where the prolonged presence of dredged sediment piles threatens the eco-hydrological balance of the agricultural-riverine environments. Reusing dredged sediments as an amendment for adjacent agricultural fields may serve as an alternative solution. However, farmers are hesitant to use this material in their fields due to the potential for weed infestation, with the associated costs incurred by crop losses. Here, we investigate the potential for weed infestation associated with reusing dredged sediments in agriculture. The research findings validate farmers' concerns regarding the undesirable proliferation of weeds following soil amelioration with dredged sediments. We present a comprehensive protocol for assessing the necessity for weed management intervention, based on infestation potential of weeds, while specifically targeting the reduction of adverse effects caused by agricultural weeds.

Pesticide residues can be taken up by plants after pesticide application, potentially resulting in soil pollution following the disposal of plant wastes at harvest. Currently, there is a lack of simple and efficient methods that can conduct high-throughput simulations to explore this problem across various chemicals and plant species. We present a modeling approach to simulating pesticide residue concentrations in soil as a result of plant waste disposal to assess the impact of plant wastes on agricultural soil pollution with respect to pesticide residues. This modeling approach employs well-established plant uptake models, providing versatility in evaluating different chemicals and plant species. The simulation process was tabulated in the spreadsheet interface, providing users with the flexibility to adjust input values for specific chemicals, plant species, and regions. The simulation results revealed that pesticides with relatively low lipophilicity (i.e., log K

The publication of the European Commission's Farm to Fork Strategy has sparked a heated debate between those who advocate the intensification of agriculture in the name of food security and those who recommend its de-intensification for environmental reasons. The design of quantified scenarios is a key approach to objectively evaluate the arguments of the two sides. To this end, we used the accounting methodology GRAFS (Generalized Representation of Agri-Food Systems) to describe the agri-food system of Europe divided into 127 geographical units of similar agricultural area, in terms of nitrogen (N) fluxes across cropland, grassland, livestock, and human consumption. This analysis reveals, in current European agriculture, a high level of territorial specialization, a strong dependence on long distance trade, and environmental N losses amounting to about 14 TgN/yr, i.e. nearly 70 % of the annual N input (including N synthetic fertilizers, symbiotic N fixation, oxidized N deposition and import of food and feed). Based on the analysis of the yield-fertilization relationship of cropping systems at the scale of their full rotation cycle, and on a simplified model of livestock ingestion, excretion and production, we advanced the GRAFS methodology for prospective scenario design. Three scenarios for the European agri-food system were explored for 2050: a business-as-usual (BAU) scenario, a scenario based on the measures considered by the EU Farm to Fork Strategy (F2F), and a fully agro-ecological scenario (AE). The results show that the F2F scenario reduces the dependence of Europe on imports of synthetic fertilizers and feed resources by 40 % as well as the environmental N losses by 30 %, but not to the level of its claimed ambitions as N lost to the environment still amounts to about 10 TgN/yr, i.e. 67 % of N inputs. Of the three scenarios studied, only in the AE scenario, involving the relocation of feed production, the generalization of organic crop rotations with N fixing legume crops, and a shift of agricultural production and food consumption toward less animal-based products, would Europe be able to dispense with N imports, still being able to export some cereals, meat, and milk products to the rest of the world, while halving today's reactive N emissions to the environment.

Mulching strategies - including plastic film mulching (FM) and straw mulching (SM) - can enhance crop yields while affecting multiple greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes. However, most of currently published site-based studies only focus on a certain gas, resulting in an inability to spatially integrated understanding of changes in agricultural global warming potential (GWP) and greenhouse gas intensity (GHGI) caused by mulching across China. Thus, we developed an optimal model considering crop type, meteorology, soil and management variables by four machine learning methods, namely support vector machine, multilayer perceptron, random forest, and gradient boosting machine (GBM). Then we mapped the relative changes in yield and GHG fluxes caused by mulching strategies. The GBM model had the best simulation capability for yield and GHGs in China. Our result showed that FM increased yield in maize (25 %) and wheat (19 %), while SM respectively increased by 14 % and 11 %. Among the relative changes due to mulching strategies, yield and N

To perform this, foreground data (collected via personal communication and literature) was used together with background data from Ecoinvent V3.8. The chosen functional unit was 1 m
