    High dose rate brachytherapy (HDR) is an internal based radiation treatment for prostate cancer. The treatment can deliver radiation to the site of dominant tumor growth within the prostate. Imaging methods to delineate the dominant tumor are imperative to ensure the maximum success of HDR. This paper investigates the feasibility of using electrical impedance tomography (EIT) as the main imaging modality during robot-aided internal radiation therapy. A procedure utilizing brachytherapy needles in order to perform EIT for the purpose of robot-aided prostate cancer imaging is proposed. It is known that cancerous tissue exhibits different conductivity than healthy tissue. Using this information, it is hypothesized that a conductivity map of the tissue can be used to locate and delineate cancerous nodules via EIT. Multiple experiments were conducted using eight brachytherapy needle electrodes. Observations indicate that the imaging procedure is able to observe differences in tissue conductivity in a setting that approximates transperineal HDR and confirm that brachytherapy needles can be used as electrodes for this purpose. The needles can access the tissue at a specific depth that traditional EIT surface electrodes cannot. The results indicate the feasibility of using brachytherapy needles for EIT for the purpose internal radiation therapy.

    Malaria prevalence in Myanmar is highest among remote and ethnic minority populations living near forest fringes along the country’s international borders. Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are a key intervention used to prevent malaria transmission, but insufficient ITN availability and low use can hinder effectiveness. This study assessed age and sex disparities in ITN possession, access, and use among household members of ethnic minority and internally displaced populations in eastern Myanmar. Cross-sectional data from the 2013 Eastern Burma Retrospective Mortality Survey were used to describe prevalence of ITN possession, access, and use. The association between a household member’s biological sex and their ITN use was assessed using multilevel log binomial regression. Age and household ITN supply were tested as potential effect modifiers. Of 37927 household members, 89.8% (95% CI: 89.5, 90.1) of people lived in households with at least one ITN. Approximately half belonged to households with sufficient ITN supply and used an ITN. Pregnant women and children under five had the highest proportion of ITN use regardless of sufficient household ITN status. Female adults aged 15 to 49 years old (Risk ratio or RR: 1.4, 95% CI: 1.29, 1.52) were more likely to use ITNs. This relationship did not differ by sufficient household ITN status. The findings suggest that among ethnic minority populations in areas where ITN use is indicated, many households do not have adequate ITN supply, and many individuals are not using ITNs. Children under five and pregnant women appear to be prioritized for ITN use and overall, women are slightly more likely to use ITNs than men. This study’s findings can support efforts ensuring that all household members belonging to ethnic minority and displaced populations in Eastern Myanmar benefit from sufficient ITN access and use for malaria prevention.

    The success of large-scale COVID-19 vaccination campaigns is contingent upon people being willing to receive the vaccine. Our study explored COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy and its correlates in eight different countries around the globe. We analyzed convenience sample data collected between March 2020 and January 2021 as part of the iCARE cross-sectional study. Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses were conducted to explore the correlates of vaccine hesitancy. We included 32,028 participants from eight countries, and observed that 27% of the participants exhibited vaccine hesitancy, with increases over time. France reported the highest level of hesitancy (47.3%) and Brazil reported the lowest (9.6%). Women, younger individuals (≤29 years), people living in rural areas, and those with a lower perceived income were more likely to be hesitant. People who previously received an influenza vaccine were 70% less likely to report COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. We observed that people reporting greater COVID-19 health concerns were less likely to be hesitant, whereas people with higher personal financial concerns were more likely to be hesitant. Our findings indicate that there is substantial vaccine hesitancy in several countries, with cross-national differences in the magnitude and direction of the trend. Vaccination communication initiatives should target hesitant individuals (women, younger adults, people with lower incomes and those living in rural areas), and should highlight the immediate health, social and economic benefits of vaccination across these settings. Country-level analyses are warranted to understand the complex psychological, socio-environmental, and cultural factors associated with vaccine hesitancy.

    Intra-operative augmented reality (AR) during surgery can mitigate incomplete cancer removal by overlaying the anatomical boundaries extracted from medical imaging data onto the camera image. In this paper, we present the first such completely markerless AR guidance system for robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RALRP) that transforms medical data from transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) to endoscope camera image. Moreover, we reduce the total number of transformations by combining the hand–eye and camera calibrations in a single step. Our proposed solution requires two transformations: TRUS to robot, $$^\mathrm{DV}T_\mathrm{TRUS}$$ , and camera projection matrix, $$\mathbf{M} $$ (i.e., the transformation from endoscope to camera image frame). $$^\mathrm{DV}T_\mathrm{TRUS}$$ is estimated by the method proposed in Mohareri et al. (in J Urol 193(1):302–312, 2015). $$\mathbf{M} $$ is estimated by selecting corresponding 3D-2D data points in the endoscope and the image coordinate frame, respectively, by using a CAD model of the surgical instrument and a preoperative camera intrinsic matrix with an assumption of a projective camera. The parameters are estimated using Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm. Overall mean re-projection errors (MRE) are reported using simulated and real data using a water bath. We show that $$\mathbf{M} $$ can be re-estimated if the focus is changed during surgery. Using simulated data, we received an overall MRE in the range of 11.69–13.32 pixels for monoscopic and stereo left and right cameras. For the water bath experiment, the overall MRE is in the range of 26.04–30.59 pixels for monoscopic and stereo cameras. The overall system error from TRUS to camera world frame is 4.05 mm. Details of the procedure are given in supplementary material. We demonstrate a markerless AR guidance system for RALRP that does not need calibration markers and thus has the capability to re-estimate the camera projection matrix if it changes during surgery, e.g., due to a focus change.

    Abstract Background Symptom control is prioritized by cancer patients and may improve overall survival. Ontario, Canada thus offers all cancer patients screening using the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS) at outpatient cancer‐related visits. We determined whether this initiative reached adolescents and young adults (AYA) and factors associated with screening in this population. Methods We linked all Ontario AYA diagnosed with cancer 2010–2018 aged 15–29 years to population‐based databases identifying outpatient visits and ESAS screening. For each 2‐week period in the year post‐diagnosis, AYA with cancer‐related visits were categorized as “unscreened” (no ESAS score) versus “screened” (≥1 ESAS score). Demographic and disease‐related covariates were examined. Results Among 5435 AYA, 4204 (77.4%) had ≥1 ESAS screen. Within any 2‐week period, only 30%–44% of AYA attending cancer‐related visits were screened. Patients with hematologic malignancies were least likely to be screened [odds ratio (OR) vs. breast cancer 0.77, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 0.67–0.88; p < 0.001]. AYA in remote Northern or rural areas had equivalent or higher rates of ESAS screening compared to those in high‐income urban areas. However, AYA living in the lowest income urban neighborhoods were less likely to be screened (OR 0.86, 95% CI 0.77–0.97; p = 0.01). Conclusions Within a population‐wide symptom assessment program, while AYA living in rural and remote areas had high rates of screening, than those in low‐income urban areas were substantially less likely to be screened. Though patients with hematologic cancers suffer from particularly high symptom burdens, they were also less likely to be screened. Interventions targeting AYA are required to increase uptake. Symptom control is prioritized by cancer patients; we assessed whether a population‐based symptom screening program was effective in screening adolescents and young adults (AYA). AYA living in rural and remote areas had high rates of screening, but those living in low‐income urban areas and those with hematologic cancers had lower screening rates. AYA‐specific measures may be warranted.

    BackgroundKinarm Standard Tests (KSTs) is a suite of upper limb tasks to assess sensory, motor, and cognitive functions, which produces granular performance data that reflect spatial and temporal aspects of behavior (&gt;100 variables per individual). We have previously used principal component analysis (PCA) to reduce the dimensionality of multivariate data using the Kinarm End-Point Lab (EP). Here, we performed PCA using data from the Kinarm Exoskeleton Lab (EXO), and determined agreement of PCA results across EP and EXO platforms in healthy participants. We additionally examined whether further dimensionality reduction was possible by using PCA across behavioral tasks.MethodsHealthy participants were assessed using the Kinarm EXO (N = 469) and EP (N = 170–200). Four behavioral tasks (six assessments in total) were performed that quantified arm sensory and motor function, including position sense [Arm Position Matching (APM)] and three motor tasks [Visually Guided Reaching (VGR), Object Hit (OH), and Object Hit and Avoid (OHA)]. The number of components to include per task was determined from scree plots and parallel analysis, and rotation type (orthogonal vs. oblique) was decided on a per-task basis. To assess agreement, we compared principal components (PCs) across platforms using distance correlation. We additionally considered inter-task interactions in EXO data by performing PCA across all six behavioral assessments.ResultsBy applying PCA on a per task basis to data collected using the EXO, the number of behavioral parameters were substantially reduced by 58–75% while accounting for 76–87% of the variance. These results compared well to the EP analysis, and we found good-to-excellent agreement values (0.75–0.99) between PCs from the EXO and those from the EP. Finally, we were able to reduce the dimensionality of the EXO data across tasks down to 16 components out of a total of 76 behavioral parameters, which represents a reduction of 79% while accounting for 73% of the total variance.ConclusionPCA of Kinarm robotic assessment appears to capture similar relationships between kinematic features in healthy individuals and is agnostic to the robotic platform used for collection. Further work is needed to investigate the use of PCA-based data reduction for the characterization of neurological deficits in clinical populations.

    Abstract Agroecology has received much attention as a sustainable production strategy that may leverage agriculture-nutrition linkages to positively impact farmer nutritional health, but its potential has not been thoroughly established through empirical assessment. This mixed methods study uses survey data from Ecuador to assess how farmers' participation in agroecological associations may impact their diets. Our results suggest that agroecological farmers outperform reference farming neighbors on both nutrient adequacy (i.e. meeting key nutrient needs) and dietary moderation (i.e. avoiding dangerous excesses). Stronger nutrient adequacy is likely related to agroecological farmers' higher production diversity as well as the social and human capital developed within their networks, while stronger dietary moderation is likely related to their greater consumption of foods obtained through own-production and the social economy (e.g. barter). Dietary differences between agroecological and reference farmers occur despite similar incomes and other socioeconomic characteristics, and in fact, agroecological farmers achieve healthier diets while spending less money to purchase foods. Agroecology-based famers' networks may thus hold promise for integrating nutritional health priorities into sustainable food systems.

    Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining is the gold standard for most histopathological diagnostics but requires lengthy processing times not suitable for point-of-care diagnosis. Here we demonstrate a 266-nm excitation ultraviolet photoacoustic remote sensing (UV-PARS) and 1310-nm microscopy system capable of virtual H&E 3D imaging of tissues. Virtual hematoxylin staining of nuclei is achieved with UV-PARS, while virtual eosin staining is achieved using the already implemented interrogation laser from UV-PARS for scattering contrast. We demonstrate the capabilities of this dual-contrast system for en-face planar and depth-resolved imaging of human tissue samples exhibiting high concordance with H&E staining procedures and confocal fluorescence microscopy. To our knowledge, this is the first microscopy approach capable of depth-resolved imaging of unstained thick tissues with virtual H&E contrast.

    Rural Ecuadorians are experiencing a double burden of malnutrition, characterized by simultaneous nutrient inadequacies and excesses, alongside the social and environmental consequences of unsustainable agriculture. Agriculture can support farmer nutrition by providing income for market purchases and through the consumption of foods from own production. However, the nutritional contributions of these food acquisition strategies vary by context. We surveyed smallholder women farmers (n = 90) in Imbabura province to assess the dietary contributions of foods obtained through market purchase, own production, and social economy among farmers participating in agroecology—a sustainable farming movement—and neighboring reference farmers. We found that foods from farmers’ own production and the social economy were relatively nutrient-rich, while market foods were calorie-rich. Consumption of foods from own production was associated with better nutrient adequacy and moderation, whereas market food consumption was associated with a worse performance on both. Food acquisition patterns differed between farmer groups: agroecological farmers obtained 44%, 32%, and 23% of their calories from conventional markets, own production, and the social economy, respectively, while reference neighbors obtained 69%, 17%, and 13%, respectively. Our findings suggest that, in this region, farmer nutrition is better supported through the consumption of their own production than through market purchases, and sustainable farming initiatives such as agroecology may be leveraged for healthy diets.

    (1) Background: Alcohol is a leading risk factor of premature morbidity and mortality. The objective of this study was to investigate the patterns of alcohol consumption in the PURE Poland cohort study baseline. (2) Methods: A Polish cohort was enrolled in the baseline study in 2007–2010. The study group consisted of 2021 adult participants of urban and rural areas from the Lower Silesia voivodeship in Poland (747 men and 1274 women). (3) Results: In the overall study population, 67.3% were current drinkers, 10.3% were former drinkers, and 22.4% were abstainers. Current use of alcohol products was more prevalent in men (77.2%), people living in urban areas (73.0%), and people with a higher level of education (78.0%). The percentage of current drinkers decreased with increasing age (from 73.4% in 30- to 44-year-olds to 48.8% in participants aged 64 and more). The majority of participants (89.2%) declared a low level of alcohol intake. The chance of high level of intake of alcohol was four times higher in men than in women (OR 4.17 CI 1.64–10.6). The majority of participants (54.6%) declared most frequent consumption of low-alcohol drinks (beer, wine) and 21% declared most frequent consumption of spirits. Current drinkers had almost 1.5-fold higher odds of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) than never drinkers (OR 1.49, CI 1.03–2.17 OR 1.76, CI 1.22–2.53, respectively). (4) Conclusions: In our cohort study, we observed several socio-demographic factors differentiating the patterns of alcohol consumption. The preventive programs should focus predominantly on men, people aged < OR 1.66, CI 1.27–2.18, respectively). Former drinkers had higher odds for hypertension and CVD than never drinkers (1.73, CI 1.05–2.85 45 years, and those with a higher level of education.

    High dose rate brachytherapy (HDR) is an internal based radiation treatment for prostate cancer. The treatment can deliver radiation to the site of dominant tumor growth within the prostate. Imaging methods to delineate the dominant tumor are imperative to ensure the maximum success of HDR. This paper investigates the feasibility of using electrical impedance tomography (EIT) as the main imaging modality during robot-aided internal radiation therapy. A procedure utilizing brachytherapy needles in order to perform EIT for the purpose of robot-aided prostate cancer imaging is proposed. It is known that cancerous tissue exhibits different conductivity than healthy tissue. Using this information, it is hypothesized that a conductivity map of the tissue can be used to locate and delineate cancerous nodules via EIT. Multiple experiments were conducted using eight brachytherapy needle electrodes. Observations indicate that the imaging procedure is able to observe differences in tissue conductivity in a setting that approximates transperineal HDR and confirm that brachytherapy needles can be used as electrodes for this purpose. The needles can access the tissue at a specific depth that traditional EIT surface electrodes cannot. The results indicate the feasibility of using brachytherapy needles for EIT for the purpose internal radiation therapy.

    Malaria prevalence in Myanmar is highest among remote and ethnic minority populations living near forest fringes along the country’s international borders. Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are a key intervention used to prevent malaria transmission, but insufficient ITN availability and low use can hinder effectiveness. This study assessed age and sex disparities in ITN possession, access, and use among household members of ethnic minority and internally displaced populations in eastern Myanmar. Cross-sectional data from the 2013 Eastern Burma Retrospective Mortality Survey were used to describe prevalence of ITN possession, access, and use. The association between a household member’s biological sex and their ITN use was assessed using multilevel log binomial regression. Age and household ITN supply were tested as potential effect modifiers. Of 37927 household members, 89.8% (95% CI: 89.5, 90.1) of people lived in households with at least one ITN. Approximately half belonged to households with sufficient ITN supply and used an ITN. Pregnant women and children under five had the highest proportion of ITN use regardless of sufficient household ITN status. Female adults aged 15 to 49 years old (Risk ratio or RR: 1.4, 95% CI: 1.29, 1.52) were more likely to use ITNs. This relationship did not differ by sufficient household ITN status. The findings suggest that among ethnic minority populations in areas where ITN use is indicated, many households do not have adequate ITN supply, and many individuals are not using ITNs. Children under five and pregnant women appear to be prioritized for ITN use and overall, women are slightly more likely to use ITNs than men. This study’s findings can support efforts ensuring that all household members belonging to ethnic minority and displaced populations in Eastern Myanmar benefit from sufficient ITN access and use for malaria prevention.

    The success of large-scale COVID-19 vaccination campaigns is contingent upon people being willing to receive the vaccine. Our study explored COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy and its correlates in eight different countries around the globe. We analyzed convenience sample data collected between March 2020 and January 2021 as part of the iCARE cross-sectional study. Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses were conducted to explore the correlates of vaccine hesitancy. We included 32,028 participants from eight countries, and observed that 27% of the participants exhibited vaccine hesitancy, with increases over time. France reported the highest level of hesitancy (47.3%) and Brazil reported the lowest (9.6%). Women, younger individuals (≤29 years), people living in rural areas, and those with a lower perceived income were more likely to be hesitant. People who previously received an influenza vaccine were 70% less likely to report COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. We observed that people reporting greater COVID-19 health concerns were less likely to be hesitant, whereas people with higher personal financial concerns were more likely to be hesitant. Our findings indicate that there is substantial vaccine hesitancy in several countries, with cross-national differences in the magnitude and direction of the trend. Vaccination communication initiatives should target hesitant individuals (women, younger adults, people with lower incomes and those living in rural areas), and should highlight the immediate health, social and economic benefits of vaccination across these settings. Country-level analyses are warranted to understand the complex psychological, socio-environmental, and cultural factors associated with vaccine hesitancy.

    Intra-operative augmented reality (AR) during surgery can mitigate incomplete cancer removal by overlaying the anatomical boundaries extracted from medical imaging data onto the camera image. In this paper, we present the first such completely markerless AR guidance system for robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RALRP) that transforms medical data from transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) to endoscope camera image. Moreover, we reduce the total number of transformations by combining the hand–eye and camera calibrations in a single step. Our proposed solution requires two transformations: TRUS to robot, $$^\mathrm{DV}T_\mathrm{TRUS}$$ , and camera projection matrix, $$\mathbf{M} $$ (i.e., the transformation from endoscope to camera image frame). $$^\mathrm{DV}T_\mathrm{TRUS}$$ is estimated by the method proposed in Mohareri et al. (in J Urol 193(1):302–312, 2015). $$\mathbf{M} $$ is estimated by selecting corresponding 3D-2D data points in the endoscope and the image coordinate frame, respectively, by using a CAD model of the surgical instrument and a preoperative camera intrinsic matrix with an assumption of a projective camera. The parameters are estimated using Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm. Overall mean re-projection errors (MRE) are reported using simulated and real data using a water bath. We show that $$\mathbf{M} $$ can be re-estimated if the focus is changed during surgery. Using simulated data, we received an overall MRE in the range of 11.69–13.32 pixels for monoscopic and stereo left and right cameras. For the water bath experiment, the overall MRE is in the range of 26.04–30.59 pixels for monoscopic and stereo cameras. The overall system error from TRUS to camera world frame is 4.05 mm. Details of the procedure are given in supplementary material. We demonstrate a markerless AR guidance system for RALRP that does not need calibration markers and thus has the capability to re-estimate the camera projection matrix if it changes during surgery, e.g., due to a focus change.

    Abstract Background Symptom control is prioritized by cancer patients and may improve overall survival. Ontario, Canada thus offers all cancer patients screening using the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS) at outpatient cancer‐related visits. We determined whether this initiative reached adolescents and young adults (AYA) and factors associated with screening in this population. Methods We linked all Ontario AYA diagnosed with cancer 2010–2018 aged 15–29 years to population‐based databases identifying outpatient visits and ESAS screening. For each 2‐week period in the year post‐diagnosis, AYA with cancer‐related visits were categorized as “unscreened” (no ESAS score) versus “screened” (≥1 ESAS score). Demographic and disease‐related covariates were examined. Results Among 5435 AYA, 4204 (77.4%) had ≥1 ESAS screen. Within any 2‐week period, only 30%–44% of AYA attending cancer‐related visits were screened. Patients with hematologic malignancies were least likely to be screened [odds ratio (OR) vs. breast cancer 0.77, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 0.67–0.88; p < 0.001]. AYA in remote Northern or rural areas had equivalent or higher rates of ESAS screening compared to those in high‐income urban areas. However, AYA living in the lowest income urban neighborhoods were less likely to be screened (OR 0.86, 95% CI 0.77–0.97; p = 0.01). Conclusions Within a population‐wide symptom assessment program, while AYA living in rural and remote areas had high rates of screening, than those in low‐income urban areas were substantially less likely to be screened. Though patients with hematologic cancers suffer from particularly high symptom burdens, they were also less likely to be screened. Interventions targeting AYA are required to increase uptake. Symptom control is prioritized by cancer patients; we assessed whether a population‐based symptom screening program was effective in screening adolescents and young adults (AYA). AYA living in rural and remote areas had high rates of screening, but those living in low‐income urban areas and those with hematologic cancers had lower screening rates. AYA‐specific measures may be warranted.

    BackgroundKinarm Standard Tests (KSTs) is a suite of upper limb tasks to assess sensory, motor, and cognitive functions, which produces granular performance data that reflect spatial and temporal aspects of behavior (&gt;100 variables per individual). We have previously used principal component analysis (PCA) to reduce the dimensionality of multivariate data using the Kinarm End-Point Lab (EP). Here, we performed PCA using data from the Kinarm Exoskeleton Lab (EXO), and determined agreement of PCA results across EP and EXO platforms in healthy participants. We additionally examined whether further dimensionality reduction was possible by using PCA across behavioral tasks.MethodsHealthy participants were assessed using the Kinarm EXO (N = 469) and EP (N = 170–200). Four behavioral tasks (six assessments in total) were performed that quantified arm sensory and motor function, including position sense [Arm Position Matching (APM)] and three motor tasks [Visually Guided Reaching (VGR), Object Hit (OH), and Object Hit and Avoid (OHA)]. The number of components to include per task was determined from scree plots and parallel analysis, and rotation type (orthogonal vs. oblique) was decided on a per-task basis. To assess agreement, we compared principal components (PCs) across platforms using distance correlation. We additionally considered inter-task interactions in EXO data by performing PCA across all six behavioral assessments.ResultsBy applying PCA on a per task basis to data collected using the EXO, the number of behavioral parameters were substantially reduced by 58–75% while accounting for 76–87% of the variance. These results compared well to the EP analysis, and we found good-to-excellent agreement values (0.75–0.99) between PCs from the EXO and those from the EP. Finally, we were able to reduce the dimensionality of the EXO data across tasks down to 16 components out of a total of 76 behavioral parameters, which represents a reduction of 79% while accounting for 73% of the total variance.ConclusionPCA of Kinarm robotic assessment appears to capture similar relationships between kinematic features in healthy individuals and is agnostic to the robotic platform used for collection. Further work is needed to investigate the use of PCA-based data reduction for the characterization of neurological deficits in clinical populations.

    Abstract Agroecology has received much attention as a sustainable production strategy that may leverage agriculture-nutrition linkages to positively impact farmer nutritional health, but its potential has not been thoroughly established through empirical assessment. This mixed methods study uses survey data from Ecuador to assess how farmers' participation in agroecological associations may impact their diets. Our results suggest that agroecological farmers outperform reference farming neighbors on both nutrient adequacy (i.e. meeting key nutrient needs) and dietary moderation (i.e. avoiding dangerous excesses). Stronger nutrient adequacy is likely related to agroecological farmers' higher production diversity as well as the social and human capital developed within their networks, while stronger dietary moderation is likely related to their greater consumption of foods obtained through own-production and the social economy (e.g. barter). Dietary differences between agroecological and reference farmers occur despite similar incomes and other socioeconomic characteristics, and in fact, agroecological farmers achieve healthier diets while spending less money to purchase foods. Agroecology-based famers' networks may thus hold promise for integrating nutritional health priorities into sustainable food systems.

    Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining is the gold standard for most histopathological diagnostics but requires lengthy processing times not suitable for point-of-care diagnosis. Here we demonstrate a 266-nm excitation ultraviolet photoacoustic remote sensing (UV-PARS) and 1310-nm microscopy system capable of virtual H&E 3D imaging of tissues. Virtual hematoxylin staining of nuclei is achieved with UV-PARS, while virtual eosin staining is achieved using the already implemented interrogation laser from UV-PARS for scattering contrast. We demonstrate the capabilities of this dual-contrast system for en-face planar and depth-resolved imaging of human tissue samples exhibiting high concordance with H&E staining procedures and confocal fluorescence microscopy. To our knowledge, this is the first microscopy approach capable of depth-resolved imaging of unstained thick tissues with virtual H&E contrast.

    Rural Ecuadorians are experiencing a double burden of malnutrition, characterized by simultaneous nutrient inadequacies and excesses, alongside the social and environmental consequences of unsustainable agriculture. Agriculture can support farmer nutrition by providing income for market purchases and through the consumption of foods from own production. However, the nutritional contributions of these food acquisition strategies vary by context. We surveyed smallholder women farmers (n = 90) in Imbabura province to assess the dietary contributions of foods obtained through market purchase, own production, and social economy among farmers participating in agroecology—a sustainable farming movement—and neighboring reference farmers. We found that foods from farmers’ own production and the social economy were relatively nutrient-rich, while market foods were calorie-rich. Consumption of foods from own production was associated with better nutrient adequacy and moderation, whereas market food consumption was associated with a worse performance on both. Food acquisition patterns differed between farmer groups: agroecological farmers obtained 44%, 32%, and 23% of their calories from conventional markets, own production, and the social economy, respectively, while reference neighbors obtained 69%, 17%, and 13%, respectively. Our findings suggest that, in this region, farmer nutrition is better supported through the consumption of their own production than through market purchases, and sustainable farming initiatives such as agroecology may be leveraged for healthy diets.

    (1) Background: Alcohol is a leading risk factor of premature morbidity and mortality. The objective of this study was to investigate the patterns of alcohol consumption in the PURE Poland cohort study baseline. (2) Methods: A Polish cohort was enrolled in the baseline study in 2007–2010. The study group consisted of 2021 adult participants of urban and rural areas from the Lower Silesia voivodeship in Poland (747 men and 1274 women). (3) Results: In the overall study population, 67.3% were current drinkers, 10.3% were former drinkers, and 22.4% were abstainers. Current use of alcohol products was more prevalent in men (77.2%), people living in urban areas (73.0%), and people with a higher level of education (78.0%). The percentage of current drinkers decreased with increasing age (from 73.4% in 30- to 44-year-olds to 48.8% in participants aged 64 and more). The majority of participants (89.2%) declared a low level of alcohol intake. The chance of high level of intake of alcohol was four times higher in men than in women (OR 4.17 CI 1.64–10.6). The majority of participants (54.6%) declared most frequent consumption of low-alcohol drinks (beer, wine) and 21% declared most frequent consumption of spirits. Current drinkers had almost 1.5-fold higher odds of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases (CVD) than never drinkers (OR 1.49, CI 1.03–2.17 OR 1.76, CI 1.22–2.53, respectively). (4) Conclusions: In our cohort study, we observed several socio-demographic factors differentiating the patterns of alcohol consumption. The preventive programs should focus predominantly on men, people aged < OR 1.66, CI 1.27–2.18, respectively). Former drinkers had higher odds for hypertension and CVD than never drinkers (1.73, CI 1.05–2.85 45 years, and those with a higher level of education.
