Project: Direct observation of Earth’s spectral longwave feedback parameter - This project contains the data created for the paper "Direct observation of Earth's spectral longwave feedback parameter". Part of this work was supported by the GRIPS project, funded by NOAA under grant NA20OAR4310375. Summary: The spectral longwave feedback parameter quantifies the change in Earth's spectrally resolved outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) in response to warming. It contains the radiative signature of all longwave feedbacks making it a key quantity influencing Earth's climate sensitivity. By spectrally resolving these changes in OLR, one can gain important information about the underlying feedback processes. This experiment contains spectrally resolved radiative quantities that can be used for the calculation and interpretation of the global mean all-sky spectral longwave feedback parameter based on seasonal and interannual variability, using both satellite observations and simulations. This is an updated version of the experiment. Compared to the first version, this version contains more data on the sensitivity of the spectral longwave feedback parameter on relative humidity changes. Additionally, this version also contains data on the contribution of the surface feedback for different surface temperatures.

Project: HAlo Microwave Package - The Halo Microwave Package (HAMP) comprises microwave radiometers with 26 channels in the frequency range between 20 and 183 GHz and a 35 GHz cloud radar. This instrument suite was designed to be deployed on the German research aircraft HALO (High Altitude LOng range research aircraft). Synergistic analysis of measurements from these instruments allow for improved detection of hydrometeors both via the emission and scattering of radiation. HAMP measurements are and can be used for satellite validation and model evaluation studies. HAMP’s main advantages are a high vertical and temporal resolution. Vertical resolution of radar data is approximately 30 m and temporal resolution of both instruments is approximately 1 s. Research for the HAMP project was funded by the German Science Foundation (DFG), within the the priority program “High Altitude and Long Range Research Aircraft (HALO)” SPP 1294, the Max-Planck-Society, and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Summary: Products of liquid water path (LWP), rain water path (RWP) and integrated water vapor (IWV, also called precipitable water vapor (PWV)) are retrieved from microwave radiometer observations with auxiliary measurements from backscatter lidar and cloud radar. The nadir measurements were taken by the German High Altitude and Long range research aircraft (HALO) during the Next generation Advanced Remote sensing for VALidation campaign South (NARVAL-South) in December 2013. Products are provided over tropical Atlantic east of Barbados. This experiment provides column integrated quantities as seen from satellite perspective but with higher spatially resolution (about 1 km footprint) than available from microwave satellites.

Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) datasets: These data include all datasets published for 'CMIP6.CMIP.NCAR.CESM2.historical' with the full Data Reference Syntax following the template 'mip_era.activity_id.institution_id.source_id.experiment_id.member_id.table_id.variable_id.grid_label.version'. The CESM2 climate model, released in 2018, includes the following components: aerosol: MAM4 (same grid as atmos), atmos: CAM6 (0.9x1.25 finite volume grid; 288 x 192 longitude/latitude; 32 levels; top level 2.25 mb), atmosChem: MAM4 (same grid as atmos), land: CLM5 (same grid as atmos), landIce: CISM2.1, ocean: POP2 (320x384 longitude/latitude; 60 levels; top grid cell 0-10 m), ocnBgchem: MARBL (same grid as ocean), seaIce: CICE5.1 (same grid as ocean). The model was run by the National Center for Atmospheric Research, Climate and Global Dynamics Laboratory, 1850 Table Mesa Drive, Boulder, CO 80305, USA (NCAR) in native nominal resolutions: aerosol: 100 km, atmos: 100 km, atmosChem: 100 km, land: 100 km, landIce: 5 km, ocean: 100 km, ocnBgchem: 100 km, seaIce: 100 km. Project: These data have been generated as part of the internationally-coordinated Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6; see also GMD Special Issue: http://www.geosci-model-dev.net/special_issue590.html). The simulation data provides a basis for climate research designed to answer fundamental science questions and serves as resource for authors of the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC-AR6). CMIP6 is a project coordinated by the Working Group on Coupled Modelling (WGCM) as part of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP). Phase 6 builds on previous phases executed under the leadership of the Program for Climate Model Diagnosis and Intercomparison (PCMDI) and relies on the Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) and the Centre for Environmental Data Analysis (CEDA) along with numerous related activities for implementation. The original data is hosted and partially replicated on a federated collection of data nodes, and most of the data relied on by the IPCC is being archived for long-term preservation at the IPCC Data Distribution Centre (IPCC DDC) hosted by the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ). The project includes simulations from about 120 global climate models and around 45 institutions and organizations worldwide. - Project website: https://pcmdi.llnl.gov/CMIP6.

Authors: The EARLINET publishing group 2000-2015, Group:; Acheson, Karen; Adam, Mariana; Alados-Arboledas, Lucas; +126 Authors

Project: A European Aerosol Research Lidar Network to Establish an Aerosol Climatology - Aerosols affect life on earth in several ways. They play an important role in the climate system; the effect of aerosols on the global climate system is one of the major uncertainties of present climate predictions. They play a major role in atmospheric chemistry and hence affect the concentrations of other potentially harmful atmospheric constituents, e.g. ozone. They are an important controlling factor for the radiation budget, in particular in the UV-B part of the spectrum. At ground level, they can be harmful, even toxic, to man, animals, and plants. Because of these adverse effects that aerosols can have on human life, it is necessary to achieve an advanced understanding of the processes that generate, redistribute, and remove aerosols in the atmosphere. A quantitative dataset describing the aerosol vertical, horizontal, and temporal distribution, including its variability on a continental scale, is necessary. The dataset is used to validate and improve models that predict the future state of the atmosphere and its dependence on different scenarios describing economic development, including those actions taken to preserve the quality of the environment. The EARLINET data set is the most comprehensive compilation of data available for this purpose. This project description is taken from: http://www.earlinet.org/index.php?id=earlinet_homepage Summary: This collection contains all measurements that have been performed in the frame of the EARLINET project during the period April 2000 - December 2015. Some of these measurements are also part of the collections 'Calipso', 'Climatology', 'SaharanDust' or 'VolcanicEruption'. In addition this collection also contains measurements from the categories 'Cirrus', 'DiurnalCycles', 'ForestFires', 'Photosmog', 'RuralUrban', and 'Stratosphere'. This collection also contains measurements not devoted to any of the above categories. More information about these categories and the contributing stations can be found in the file 'EARLINET_general_introduction.pdf' accompanying this dataset.

Authors: Konow, Heike; Jacob, Marek; Ament, Felix; Crewell, Susanne; +6 Authors

Summary: NAWDEX: Measurements of microwave radiometer brightness temperatures, radar reflectivity and linear depolarisation ratio, and dropsonde atmospheric profiles from aircraft campaign over mid-latitude Atlantic out of Iceland. The campaign explored the impact of diabatic processes on disturbances of the jet stream and their influence on downstream high-impact weather through the deployment of four research aircraft.

Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) datasets: These data include all datasets published for 'CMIP6.CDRMIP.NCAR.CESM2' with the full Data Reference Syntax following the template 'mip_era.activity_id.institution_id.source_id.experiment_id.member_id.table_id.variable_id.grid_label.version'.
