This article presents a data-driven oriented methodology to model the grasp space of a multi-fingered adaptive gripper for known objects. This method relies on a limited dataset of manually specified expert grasps, and uses variational autoencoder to learn grasp intrinsic features in a compact way from a computational point of view. The learnt model can then be used to generate new non-learnt gripper configurations to explore the grasp space. Comment: accepted at SYSID 2021 conference

Despite having integrated public health concerns across all its policies – be it agriculture, consumer protection, or security –, the Union cannot directly act to save people’s lives. Only member states can do so. Yet when they adopted unilateral measures to counter the spread of the virus, those proved not only ineffective but also disruptive on vital supply chains, by ultimately preventing the flow of essential goods and people across the Union. These fragmented efforts in tackling cross-border health threats have almost immediately prompted political calls for the urgent creation of a European Health Union. Yet this call raises more questions than answers. With the aim to offer a rigorous and timely blueprint to decision-makers and the public at large, this Special Issue of the European Journal of Risk Regulation contextualizes such a new political project within the broader constitutional and institutional framework of EU public health law and policy. By introducing the Special, this paper argues that unless the envisaged Health Union will tackle the root causes of what prevented the Union from effectively responding to COVID-19 – the divergent health capacity across the Union –, it might fall short of its declared objective of strengthening the EU’resilience for cross-border health threats.

Mirieri; Gratian N. Mutika; Jimmy Bruno; Momar Talla Seck; Baba Sall; Andrew G. Parker; Monique M. van Oers; Marc J. B. Vreysen; Jérémy Bouyer; Adly M. M. Abd-Alla;Tsetse eradication continues to be a top priority for African governments including that of Senegal, which embarked on a project to eliminateGlossina palpalis gambiensisfrom the Niayes area, following an area-wide integrated pest management approach with an SIT component. A successful SIT programme requires competitive sterile males of high biological quality. This may be hampered by handling processes including irradiation and the release mechanisms, necessitating continued improvement of these processes, to maintain the quality of flies. A new prototype of an automated chilled adult release system (Bruno Spreader Innovation, (BSI (TM))) for tsetse flies was tested for its accuracy (in counting) and release rate consistency. Also, its impact on the quality of the released sterile males was evaluated on performance indicators, including flight propensity, mating competitiveness, premating and mating duration, insemination rate of mated females and survival of male flies. The BSI(TM)release system accurately counted and homogenously released flies at the lowest motor speed set (0.6 rpm), at a consistent rate of 60 +/- 9.58 males/min. Also, the release process, chilling (6 +/- 1 degrees C) and passing of flies through the machine) had no significant negative impact on the male flight propensity, mating competitiveness, premating and mating durations and the insemination rates. Only the survival of flies was negatively affected whether under feeding or starvation. The positive results of this study show that the BSI (TM) release system is promising for use in future tsetse SIT programmes. However, the negative impact of the release process on survival of flies needs to be addressed in future studies and results of this study confirmed under operational field conditions in West Africa. The traditional ways of modeling generally have common problems such as low efficiency, waste of manpower and time consumption. How to find a rapid approach to automatically complete large-scale 3D modeling is a very hot research topic. In this paper we propose a novel approach of procedural modeling of buildings with CityEngine, which is combined with ArcGIS technology for the geographic information. This approach produces extensive architectural 3D models with high visual quality and geometric details at low cost. It includes following two contents concretely. At first, directly writing computer generated architecture (CGA) shape grammar to complete procedural modeling of building and other objects. Secondly, using facade modeling based on two-dimensional images to generate architectural model as well as creating high geometry details. It is validated that this novel approach of procedural modeling is a significant step forward that reduces a lot of modeling times by CGA shape grammars. To handle the ambiguities arising in this scenario, a common strategy is, first, to generate multiple estimates for the camera pose from which a given query image was taken. The pose with the largest geometric consistency with the query image, e.g., in the form of an inlier count, is then selected in a second stage. While a significant amount of research has concentrated on the first stage, there is considerably less work on the second stage. In this paper, we thus focus on pose verification. We show that combining different modalities, namely appearance, geometry, and semantics, considerably boosts pose verification and consequently pose accuracy. We develop multiple hand-crafted as well as a trainable approach to join into the geometric-semantic verification and show significant improvements over state-of-the-art on a very challenging indoor dataset. Background: Geographical accessibility to health facilities remains one of the main barriers to access care in rural areas of the developing world. Although methods and tools exist to model geographic accessibility, the lack of basic geographic information prevents their widespread use at the local level for targeted program implementation. The aim of this study was to develop very precise, context-specific estimates of geographic accessibility to care in a rural district of Madagascar to help with the design and implementation of interventions that improve access for remote populations. Methods: We used a participatory approach to map all the paths, residential areas, buildings and rice fields on Open-StreetMap (OSM). We estimated shortest routes from every household in the District to the nearest primary health care center (PHC) and community health site (CHS) with the Open Source Routing Machine (OSMR) tool. Then, we used remote sensing methods to obtain a high resolution land cover map, a digital elevation model and rainfall data to model travel speed. Travel speed models were calibrated with field data obtained by GPS tracking in a sample of 168 walking routes. Model results were used to predict travel time to seek care at PHCs and CHSs for all the shortest routes estimated earlier. Finally, we integrated geographical accessibility results into an e-health platform developed with R Shiny. Results: We mapped over 100,000 buildings, 23,000 km of footpaths, and 4925 residential areas throughout Ifana-diana district; these data are freely available on OSM. We found that over three quarters of the population lived more than one hour away from a PHC, and 10-15% lived more than 1 h away from a CHS. Moreover, we identified areas in the North and East of the district where the nearest PHC was further than 5 h away, and vulnerable populations across the district with poor geographical access (> 1 h) to both PHCs and CHSs. Conclusion: Our study demonstrates how to improve geographical accessibility modeling so that results can be context-specific and operationally actionable by local health actors. The importance of such approaches is paramount for achieving universal health coverage (UHC) in rural areas throughout the world. International audience

Original concepts in food and agriculture have recently emerged following the discovery of the new properties of nanomaterials. For instance, the hydrophobic sheathing of leaves has been mimicked to coat food and agricultural materials at the nanoscale. Research in nanoscience has produced materials with unique properties such as nanotubes, nanofillers, nanoparticles, nanocomposites, nanoemulsions, nanoliposomes, nanoclusters and self-assembled nanoparticles. Nanoencapsulation of functional molecules in food matrices is a new formulation technique that enhances food quality and security. The hurdles previously observed during the fabrication of encapsulating nanostructures have been addressed. Research is actually aiming at developping novel nanodelivery vehicles, and evaluating their risks. In particular, localized delivery and controlled release of nutrients is a current topic (Figure 1). Nanofertilizers and nanopesticides has the potential to enhance agricultural productivity. However, the transfert of engineered nanoparticles in the food chain may induce a toxic risk.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article , Preprint 2020 FrancePublisher:Elsevier BV Authors: Alemanno, Alberto;Alemanno, Alberto; The European response to COVID-19 has revealed an inconvenient truth.

This book reviews the formation, synthesis, functionality, applications, regulation, safety and socio-economical aspects of nanoparticles in food and agriculture.
