    National audience; Pendant 150 ans, le sulfate de cuivre a été utilisé de façon intensive comme fongicide pour lutter contre les maladies de la vigne. De ce fait, le cuivre s’est fortement accumulé dans les solsviticoles, atteignant des concentrations potentiellement nocives pour les organismes des sols.Bien que les doses de cuivre appliquées aujourd’hui soient 10 fois plus faibles qu’il y a 50 ans,son utilisation dans le contexte de la transition agroécologique est encore soumise à débat caril est un des rares pesticides autorisés en agriculture biologique. Dans ce travail, nous avonsconduit une méta-analyse de la littérature académique internationale pour objectiver l’impactdu cuivre sur la qualité biologique des sols quand il est appliqué aux doses agricoles actuelles,mais également l’impact de son accumulation dans les sols. Parmi les 300 articles passés enrevue, seulement 19 répondaient à la question de façon pertinente.Les résultats montrent que l’activité microbienne décroît de 30% à l’application d’une dosesupérieures à 400 kgCu/ha/an. L’abondance des nématodes reste inchangée pour des doses decuivre jusqu’à 3 200 kg/ha/an. La reproduction des collemboles et des enchytrées diminue de50 % après application de 400 et 1895 kgCu/ha/an respectivement. La biomasse lombricienneest réduite de 15 % après application de 200 kgCu/ha/an. D’autre part, dans des sols avec desteneurs en cuivre supérieures à 200 kgCu/ha, la respiration microbienne est réduite de 50 %.Aucun effet des teneurs en cuivre du sol n’est observé sur les collemboles. Globalement, bienqu’une toxicité du cuivre soit observée sur la biodiversité du sol, la littérature montre qu’elleconcerne des doses au moins 50 fois supérieures à la dose de 4 kgCu/ha/an actuellement auto risée par la Commission Européenne en viticulture. Par conséquent, appliquer du cuivre à 4 kgCu/ha/an ne devrait pas substantiellement modifier la qualité et les fonctions biologique du sol

    Abstract Firm agility today is not a factor of competitiveness or success but a survival instrument on the market. Disruptive innovations and technological advancement, together with digitalization, change the role of firm agility. We show that the link between the national/industry level of digitalization and firm agility is statistically robust and essential. We study the link on data from 2009 to 2018 in fifteen EU advanced economies using dynamic panel data modeling. The digitalization impact level differs across firms by ownership type (family to non-family firms). Agility in family firms is strongly influenced by the national/industry level of digitization and investments in intangible assets (particularly the creation of own-organizational capital). Non-family firms' agility depends on investment in human capital, design, and creation of new products and minorly on national/industry digitalization level. Digitalization and gross investments in intangible assets can increase family firm agility exponentially (elasticity coefficient of 85 for-profit margins). Policymakers using policy supporting national/industry digitalization can boost economic growth significantly. Managers and practitioners targeting specific investments in intangible assets can improve and increase firm agility to large extents.

    Abstract One of the first steps for the exploitation of any energy source is necessarily represented by its estimation and mapping at the aim of identifying the most suitable areas in terms of energy potential. In the field of renewable energies this is often a very difficult task, because the energy source is in this case characterized by relevant variations over space and time. This implies that any temporal, but also spatial, estimation model has to be able to incorporate this spatial and temporal variability. The paper deals with the spatial estimation of the wind fields in Sicily (Italy) by following a data-driven approach. Starting from the results of a preliminary study, a novel technique resulting from the integration of neural and geostatistical techniques was developed in order to obtain the wind speed maps for the region at 10 and 50 meters above the ground level. The mean values of the theoretical Weibull distribution function describing the wind regime at each of the available measurement sites were used to train a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) whose goal is to compute the most of the wind spatial trends. Other pieces of information about the territory (altitude, land coverage) were also used as inputs of the network and organized into a geographic information system (GIS) environment. The remaining de-trended linear means have been computed by using a universal kriging (UK) estimator. The results of these steps were then summed up and it was thus possible to obtain a map of the estimated wind fields.

    This study attempts to measure the capacity of the EU geographical certification scheme to positively influence the price of certified products and the incomes of their producers. A comparison of the economic results of two cheese-producing dairy farm enterprises with different business strategies and locations within the Sicilian hinterlands is performed in order to determine the transformation value of each dairy’s sheep milk into pecorino cheese (with and without the Protected Designation of Origin, or PDO, certification) and the related joint products (ricotta). The economic convenience of the total transformation of sheep milk into Pecorino Siciliano PDO and ricotta is also appraised. The results suggest that producing and commercializing Pecorino Siciliano PDO is a promising strategy for differentiating and promoting dairy farm products and improving the financial performance of producers, with foreseeable positive repercussions in the socioeconomically less favored rural areas where they are located.

    A characteristic spectral emission is observed in vegetation chlorophyll under excitation by solar radiation. This emission, known as solar‐induced chlorophyll fluorescence, occurs in the red and near infra‐red spectral regions. In this paper a new methodology for the estimation of solar‐induced chlorophyll fluorescence from spaceborne and airborne sensors is presented. The fluorescence signal is included in an atmospheric radiative transfer scheme so that chlorophyll fluorescence and surface reflectance are retrieved consistently from the measured at‐sensor radiance. This methodology is tested on images acquired by the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) on board the ENVIronmental SATellite (ENVISAT) taking advantage of its good characterization of the O2‐A absorption band. Validation of MERIS‐derived fluorescence is carried out by applying the method to data acquired by the Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager (CASI‐1500) sensor concurrently to MERIS acquisitions. CASI‐derived fluorescence is in turn compared with ground‐based fluorescence measurements, a correlation coefficient R2 of 0.85 being obtained.

    Abstract A common expectation in evolutionary cluster studies is that national clusters engage in competitive interactions that lead to a continuous stream of changes in global dominance. Our fuzzy-set analysis on the evolution of the paper and pulp industry demonstrates that globalization has dramatically changed this situation. National clusters have largely faded away; the value chain dominance is now held by technology suppliers who are global hubs in majority of identifiable business activities in the focal industry. Our results imply that when industrial decline is accentuated by industrial concentration in some part of the value chain the national clusters may lose their importance.

    AbstractSince the turn of the century, rubber plantations have been expanding their footprint across Southeast Asia in response to an increasing global demand for rubber products. Between 2000 and 2014, the area cultivated with rubber more than doubled. It is not clear how this major change in the agricultural landscape of Southeast Asia, the main area of rubber production in the world, is affecting land‐use patterns and water resources in the region. Here we use maps of rubber plantations and other croplands in conjunction with a hydrological model and remote sensing analyses to assess land‐use patterns and water resources affected by natural rubber plantations. Results show water requirements of rubber trees are comparable to those of forests but by far exceed those of the other predominant crops and shrubland vegetation with the effect of potentially increasing water scarcity when rubber plantations replace these crops. The expansion of rubber plantations accounts for a 38 km3/yr increase in green water consumption, thereby exacerbating the monthly water scarcity, with an additional 2.4 million people and more than 0.6 Mha facing water scarcity in the driest months as a result of the increase in rubber production. Monthly runoff substantially decreases (by up to 25%) in 14% of the basins where rubber was planted. These results highlight the existence of major land use and hydrological impacts of agricultural development in Southeast Asia that affect the local environment and rural communities, calling for a more sustainable management of the limited land and water resources.

    A trade-off between greenhouse emissions (direct and indirect) and operational costs in the water treatment sector is of great importance, although only few literature studies exist. The paper presents a comprehensive experimental study on a Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) pilot plant at the Water Resource Recovery Facility of Palermo University (Italy). The MBR pilot plant was aimed at reducing carbon footprint while producing water suitable for water reuse in agriculture. Multiple scenarios were assessed to unveil the best operational variables including the assessment of the reclaimed water quality index for water reuse. Results showed the lowest operational costs for the MBR of 5.05 euro cent/m3 with Class B according to 741/2020 European legislation. Results revealed optimised values, in terms of airflow rate and backwash frequency, of 0.8 m3/m2/h and 12 times/h, respectively. The highest N2O emission was measured in correspondence of scenario S5 (airflow rate of 1.6 m3/m2/h) with 0.40 mg N2O-N/m2/h in agreement with previous literature studies. The obtained results could effectively address the operators to find a trade-off between operational costs and water quality.

    Satellites can be used for producing maps of within-field crop and soil parameters and, consequentially, spatially variable rate crop input application maps. The plant vegetative vigour index (i.e., Normalised Difference Vegetation Index—NDVI) and the leaf water content index (i.e., Normalised Difference Water Index—NDWI) maps were used to study—through both time and space—the phenological phases of two plots, with Syrah and Nero d’Avola grapevine varieties, in a Sicilian vineyard farm, located in Naro (Agrigento, Sicily, Italy). The aim of this work is to produce spatially variable rate nitrogen fertiliser maps to be applied in the two vineyard plots under study as well as to understand when they should be fertilised or not according to their target crop yields. The average plant vegetative vigour and leaf water content of both the plots showed a high temporal and spatial variability during all phenological phases and, according to these results, the optimal fertilisation time should have been 12 April 2021. In fact, this crop operation is aimed at supporting the vegetative activity but must be performed when the soil water and, therefore, the plant leaf water content are high. Therefore, spatially variable rate fertilisation should have been performed around 12 April 2021 in both plots, using previous NDVI maps and taking into consideration two management zones. This work demonstrates the usefulness of remote sensing data as Decision Support Systems (DSS) for nitrogen fertilisation in order to reduce the production cost, environmental impact and climate footprints per kg of produced grapes, according to the European Green Deal challenges.

    Optimization of thermal energy and electricity production processes using renewable energy source (RES) is extremely important for agricultural horticultural, and production farms. The article is devoted to the search for the best available techniques to the optimize the process of obtaining heat energy from RES to meet the energy needs in Polish agriculture. The food industry is particularly energy-intensive and as a result, when introducing various innovative technological processes, strong emphasis is placed on rational energy consumption and minimizing its losses, as well as on the secondary use of waste heat. The direct result of using RES devices is also a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions into the air.

    National audience; Pendant 150 ans, le sulfate de cuivre a été utilisé de façon intensive comme fongicide pour lutter contre les maladies de la vigne. De ce fait, le cuivre s’est fortement accumulé dans les solsviticoles, atteignant des concentrations potentiellement nocives pour les organismes des sols.Bien que les doses de cuivre appliquées aujourd’hui soient 10 fois plus faibles qu’il y a 50 ans,son utilisation dans le contexte de la transition agroécologique est encore soumise à débat caril est un des rares pesticides autorisés en agriculture biologique. Dans ce travail, nous avonsconduit une méta-analyse de la littérature académique internationale pour objectiver l’impactdu cuivre sur la qualité biologique des sols quand il est appliqué aux doses agricoles actuelles,mais également l’impact de son accumulation dans les sols. Parmi les 300 articles passés enrevue, seulement 19 répondaient à la question de façon pertinente.Les résultats montrent que l’activité microbienne décroît de 30% à l’application d’une dosesupérieures à 400 kgCu/ha/an. L’abondance des nématodes reste inchangée pour des doses decuivre jusqu’à 3 200 kg/ha/an. La reproduction des collemboles et des enchytrées diminue de50 % après application de 400 et 1895 kgCu/ha/an respectivement. La biomasse lombricienneest réduite de 15 % après application de 200 kgCu/ha/an. D’autre part, dans des sols avec desteneurs en cuivre supérieures à 200 kgCu/ha, la respiration microbienne est réduite de 50 %.Aucun effet des teneurs en cuivre du sol n’est observé sur les collemboles. Globalement, bienqu’une toxicité du cuivre soit observée sur la biodiversité du sol, la littérature montre qu’elleconcerne des doses au moins 50 fois supérieures à la dose de 4 kgCu/ha/an actuellement auto risée par la Commission Européenne en viticulture.     Abstract Firm agility today is not a factor of competitiveness or success but a survival instrument on the market. Disruptive innovations and technological advancement, together with digitalization, change the role of firm agility. We show that the link between the national/industry level of digitalization and firm agility is statistically robust and essential. We study the link on data from 2009 to 2018 in fifteen EU advanced economies using dynamic panel data modeling. The digitalization impact level differs across firms by ownership type (family to non-family firms). Agility in family firms is strongly influenced by the national/industry level of digitization and investments in intangible assets (particularly the creation of own-organizational capital). Non-family firms' agility depends on investment in human capital, design, and creation of new products and minorly on national/industry digitalization level. Digitalization and gross investments in intangible assets can increase family firm agility exponentially (elasticity coefficient of 85 for-profit margins). Policymakers using policy supporting national/industry digitalization can boost economic growth significantly. Managers and practitioners targeting specific investments in intangible assets can improve and increase firm agility to large extents.

    Abstract One of the first steps for the exploitation of any energy source is necessarily represented by its estimation and mapping at the aim of identifying the most suitable areas in terms of energy potential. In the field of renewable energies this is often a very difficult task, because the energy source is in this case characterized by relevant variations over space and time. This implies that any temporal, but also spatial, estimation model has to be able to incorporate this spatial and temporal variability. The paper deals with the spatial estimation of the wind fields in Sicily (Italy) by following a data-driven approach. Starting from the results of a preliminary study, a novel technique resulting from the integration of neural and geostatistical techniques was developed in order to obtain the wind speed maps for the region at 10 and 50 meters above the ground level. The mean values of the theoretical Weibull distribution function describing the wind regime at each of the available measurement sites were used to train a multi-layer perceptron (MLP) whose goal is to compute the most of the wind spatial trends. Other pieces of information about the territory (altitude, land coverage) were also used as inputs of the network and organized into a geographic information system (GIS) environment. The remaining de-trended linear means have been computed by using a universal kriging (UK) estimator. The results of these steps were then summed up and it was thus possible to obtain a map of the estimated wind fields.

    This study attempts to measure the capacity of the EU geographical certification scheme to positively influence the price of certified products and the incomes of their producers. A comparison of the economic results of two cheese-producing dairy farm enterprises with different business strategies and locations within the Sicilian hinterlands is performed in order to determine the transformation value of each dairy’s sheep milk into pecorino cheese (with and without the Protected Designation of Origin, or PDO, certification) and the related joint products (ricotta). The economic convenience of the total transformation of sheep milk into Pecorino Siciliano PDO and ricotta is also appraised. The results suggest that producing and commercializing Pecorino Siciliano PDO is a promising strategy for differentiating and promoting dairy farm products and improving the financial performance of producers, with foreseeable positive repercussions in the socioeconomically less favored rural areas where they are located.
