In this paper globalization is conceptualised as a process that marks a new phase of capitalism (Moreira 1994). The aim of this paper is to propose a systematic approach to the economic and social consequences of the globalization process, with particular attention to agriculture and agri-food as well as the use of rural areas. Therefore, understanding the role of the main agents of globalization is a necessary condition to assess the impact of this process. My working hypothesis is that the different actors in the globalization process do not demonstrate the same behaviour, justifying a closer look at the logic and dynamics of its main agents, and the reactions that these changes provoke.

Instituto de Medicina Tropical de São Paulo Authors: Zani, Luciana Carvalho; Favre, Tereza Cristina; Pieri, Otávio Sarmento; Barbosa, Constança Simões;Zani, Luciana Carvalho; Favre, Tereza Cristina; Pieri, Otávio Sarmento; Barbosa, Constança Simões;This work aims to evaluate the impact of drug treatment on infection by Ascaris lumbricoides (Al), Trichuris trichiura (Tt) and hookworms (Hook) in a rural community from the sugar-cane zone of Pernambuco, Brazil. Four parasitological surveys were carried out from March 2001 to March 2002. Individual diagnosis was based on eight slides (four by the Kato-Katz method and four by the Hoffman method) per survey. Infected subjects were assigned to two groups for treatment with either albendazole (n = 62) or mebendazole (n = 57). Prevalence of infection fell significantly (p < 0.05) one month after treatment: Al (from 47.7% to 6.6%); Tt (from 45.7% to 31.8%) and Hook (from 47.7% to 24.5%). One year after treatment, infections by Tt and Hook remained significantly below pre-control levels. A substantial decrease in single-infection cases and multiple infections was found. Egg-negative rate was significant for Al (94.0%), Hook (68.3%) but not for Tt (45.5%), and did not differ significantly between subjects treated with mebendazole or albendazole. Egg counts fell significantly in the individuals remaining positive for Tt. It is recommended that antihelminthic treatment should be selective and given at yearly intervals preferably with albendazole, due to its cost-effectiveness.

As a complex phenomenon, migration leads necessarily to changes in the concerned societies, either the departure society or the destination one, the former being in most cases rural based with agriculture as a main activity. Setting as a research field that rural and agrarian society, this study tries to identify factors conditioning the migration flow. It also attempts to understand the mechanisms of a changing community due to the return of migrant people back to their original village. A case study conducted in Pinela, a village of Northeastern Portugal, permited a local approach to the outlined research topics. Information, gathered from inquire techniques and written sources of different nature, has been treated by means of data analysis methods. "Landownership expectation", as it was coded here, provides an explanatory basis for migration flow in Pinela. This factor corresponds to the area owned by a family divided by the number of their children, and assesses the possibilities for children to expect a continuity in agriculture and, hence, in the village. Moreover, former migrants back in the village are active changing agents, as they commit themselves in new and diversified activities at the community level, although remaining farmers as they originally were.

– precedem a discussão pedagógica.

Such process aimed at integrating, systematically, indus try and agricultural activities through modern technologies. The main to implement modern agricultural technology was to reduce the famine in the planet. Therefore, thousands of Brazilian peasants were affected by such transformations. Many of them gave up agriculture; some of them were sent a way from the rural area, while others still resist to the agricultural modernization process. In Vicente Dutra, small municipality situated at northwest region of Rio Grande do Sul State, started having agricultural modernization ar ound 1960s. The rural territory of Vicente Dutra-RS shows, substantially, the faces of agricultural modernization. Even though, it is possible to identify some forms of reaction regarding agricultural modernization. Such transformations are: the growing of traditional subsistence, cooperativism, and initiatives of transformation of production which would sell it directly to the consumer. Therefore, the agricultural modernization installed in Vicente Dutra-RS is partial, and the peasants keep, even with certain difficulty, their traditional agricultural customs.

Betini; Luiz Amilton Pepplow;Abstract Advances in energy demand in rural areas cannot be dissociated from agricultural modernization, large estates, mechanization of labor and reduced investment in small production. The use of biogas together with biomass are the most cost-effective ways for the small producer, as it has a high calorific value. In the case of biogas the procedure is performed by combining a compressor and a chiller, allowing the gas enter the reactor and burn together with the air stream. The use of these techniques is an auxiliary way to reduce the cost of the producer to produce a certain crop, besides allowing a participation in the final energy supply, so that the utilities have an alternative to distribute the surplus energy to another region, serving thus a wider range in the rural area.

Calculations based on econometric modelling of the current state of functioning of rural areas were the methodological basis for the study of this work. A specific system of evaluation of selected indicators was used as a tool for analysis. The results helped to establish a certain typology of rural areas according to the level of their development and to group the solution of their development problems into three components: economic, social and environmental. Elements of the organizational and economic mechanism for regulating the development of rural areas have been developed based on these results, which provides for measures in the areas of software, regulatory and legal support.

For further information contact us at helpdesk@openaire.eudescription Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2011 PortuguesePublisher:Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro Authors: Spier, Gilberto;Spier, Gilberto;During the last decades Brazilian agriculture has been undergoing deep transformations which were subjected to a process of modernization.

Batista; Maria Luiza E. Bareta; Roberto C. Betini; +1 AuthorsÁlvaro A. Sandim; Alexandre G. Batista; Maria Luiza E. Bareta; Roberto C.
