    Abstract Background Food consumption influences food security household level, particularly among paddy farmers households especially in the rural area. At the same time food taboo or food belief among paddy farmers people in a rural area in certain food still exist until now. Therefore, this study aims to explore the food consumption and food belief among low-income households in the rural area, Kedah Malaysia Methods This qualitative study was carried out in Kubang Pasu, Alor Setar, Pendang, Kuala Muda and Baling district in Kedah, Malaysia. A total of 225 respondents were involved in this study. Data were collected from heads of households involve directly in paddy crops. Results The study found out, that paddy farmers households in a rural area of Kedah Malaysia consumed less food with a score of less than 30.0. This group uses chub mackerel fish as a protein resource because the price is low when compared to other saltwater fish (e.g. pomfret, king mackerel, grouper fish, mangrove red snapper, snapper, and barramundi), and also uses freshwater fish as a protein resource. Furthermore, food beliefs also influenced food consumption among the rural paddy farmers households in Kedah. Conclusion The findings reveal the food consumption patterns of low-income families especially, particularly in rural areas, and point to the need for more targeted and planned programmes within the low-income group to improve food security, particularly in food consumption households. However, food belief inseparable in their daily routine.

    There is still a lack of studies to implement a Small Private Online Course for learning communities. This study aimed to identify the teaching and learning (T&L) process carried out when using an English Flipped-Small Private Tuition Online Course (EESPtoc) based on Gagne’s theory. Using purposive sampling, respondents were selected among rural primary school students. The respondents were introduced to the EESPtoc, which is a free tuition online platform for 4 sessions. A questionnaire and interview were used to collect data. SPSS software was used for data analysis in the form of descriptive statistics. Findings show that students have positive responses toward the use of EESPtoc and the interview had also supported the finding of the survey. To enhance this study, further research is recommended to look into the long-term effects of exploring retention of knowledge and skills from the use of the EESPtoc in the T&L process.

    The rapid development that spills over into rural areas has resulted in rural areas in the State of Johor is no exception showed deterioration of air quality as a result of development. The study area was in Kampung Paya Pulai, Segamat; Parit Raja, Batu Pahat; Kampung Sri Bahagia, Mersing and Kampung Pok and Johor Bahru. Air quality sampling for this study is for gas pollutant SO2, NO2, CO, O3 and PM10 which requires sampling for one hour. Gases such as SO2, NO2 and CO2 content gas concentration values are seen in air through air quality sampling tool YESAIR Model #6000. While sampling the Ozone O3 through the tool Detector. These two tools are portable and direct reading of values obtained after the observations made on-site sampling study area. While PM10, the air samples are collected using the tool per sample air G2142 Model E-Sampler. Recorded Data will be transferred to the computer using Terminal Utility Software (TUS) to analyzed. Air observation was carried out three times a day, in the morning, noon and night. Air quality sampling performed on two different days which are business days in Johor (Monday-Friday) and not working (Saturday & Sunday). While for pollutants PM10 is determined within the last 24 hours. Determination of air quality based on the Standards referenced/air quality environment in Malaysia, issued by the Department of Environment (DOE). The results showed pollution occurs in all rural areas in the State of Johor. Gas SO2 and NO.2 show the highest reading was in Parit Raja with each recitation of SO2 am 0.011 0.024 noon and night, 0.008 ppm, while NO.2 at reading in the morning, noon and 0.009 0.011-night 0.005 ppm. The main gas contributing to air pollution is PM10, CO, and O3 in all areas of the study. API on average less than 50 reading still categorized as ' healthy '. Only one station that recorded the value of the ' medium ' in Kampung Paya Pulai, Segamat contributed by the concentration of PM10. It is hoped that this study will serve as a guide to community and stakeholders in the development of rural areas and the need to maintain the air quality in rural areas.

    Malaysia aims to be an information society by the year 2020 can only be achieved if the mass population, that include those who live in the rural area, has the access to use the ICT. This is due to the uneven distribution of the basic telecommunication infostructure between the urban and rural areas in Malaysia that left the rural area to be at the disadvantage to access the ICT. Meanwhile, there are many programs that have been implemented by the government to encourage the rural population to use the Internet, such as ‘Kedaikom’, a community based telecenter serving the rural population. A questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate how ‘Kedaikom’ as a community based telecenter could assist in diffusing the usage of the ICT to the rural population. The result from the survey has indicated that the community telecenter could be used to bridge the digital divide between the underserved rural community and the well-accessed urban community. More of the rural population, especially from the younger generation and those with higher education background (irrespective of age) are using the community telecenter to be connected to the Internet.

    The results of the 2018 General Election in Malaysia show interesting and varied political dynamics based on issues, leadership, campaign strategies, winning and defeat factors, polling patterns, and also location. Hence the purpose of writing this article is to analyze the trend of polling in GE 2018 based on urban and rural areas according to 222 parliamentary constituencies in the country. The writing of this article is produced through the analysis of the GE13 2018 decision-making data for the Parliamentary constituencies as well as the in-depth analysis of secondary information from mainstream media and social media directly involved in the GE 2018. The findings show that almost all urban areas were won by Pakatan Harapan (PH) and some were won by PAS, in urban areas in the East Coast region of Peninsular Malaysia. The rural areas in the majority of Malays areas are dominated by UMNO/BN and PAS in Kelantan, Terengganu, and also rural parts of Kedah. There are also rural areas won by either BN, PAS, and PH with a slight majority because of the split of the three-party blocks. This is due to the different demographic segments of the voters either by local voters, young voters, outsiders, and even higher educated voters. Hence, the pattern of voting by geographical location in the GE 2018 is very interesting and compositing to be studied and deserves to be taken into account by the concerned parties, especially political parties, governments, and political researchers in order to be a solution to produce rational political thinking and to follow the current trends to care for the well-being of the common people.

    Abstract Background and aimsUlex europaeus L. (Fabaceae), commonly known as gorse, is an invasive woody shrub that easily grows in several locations across the world. However, little is known about the interactions of this invasive species with soil microorganisms and how these microbes can promote reaching rapid grow-rates at early stages of development. We aim at characterizing the endophytic fungal and bacterial microbiota associated with roots of early growth stage U. europaeus colonizing native ecosystems in south-central Chile.MethodsRoot-associated microorganisms were isolated and identified using standard molecular techniques. Furthermore, plant growth-promoting traits were studied and biocontrol activity was assessed to characterize the early growth stage root-associated taxa. ResultsFour endophytic fungi belonging to Sordariomycetes and twelve bacteria assigned to Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria were identified as the principal early growth stage root-endophytic taxa. Plant growth-promoting traits were detected in several isolates such as Fusarium acuminatum and Rhodococcus sp. Besides, some of the isolates such as Rhodococcus sp. and Purpureocillium lilacinum showed biocontrol potential against phytopathogenic fungi. ConclusionsOur results demonstrate that early growth stage root endophytic taxa associated with U. europaeus have beneficial plant growth-promoting traits that can contribute with the rapid growth-rates of the shrub. The interaction with a set of beneficial microorganisms is an additional mechanism to explain the ability of U. europaeus for colonizing in various ecosystems.

    Authors: Massimiliano Farris;

    En territorios rurales marginales de Chile y España, los recursos silvícolas concurren en la producción de riqueza, aunque vinculados a modelos de desarrollo aparentemente distintos. En Chile, se asocian a una idea de desarrollo centrado en la figura del “emprendedor” que con su esfuerzo logra volver productiva la “naturaleza” a través de un uso intensivo del territorio. En España, las estrategias de desarrollo apuntan a un aprovechamiento “sostenible” del recurso forestal, junto con una “puesta en valor” del patrimonio territorial. En el texto se cuestiona la idea de “desarrollo”, asociada a la dimensión “local” y “sustentable”, hipotetizando que modelos distintos de desarrollo responden a una similar visión dual y mercantilista del territorio (“territorio eficiente vs. territorio improductivo; “puesta en valor” de los recursos vs. recursos "abandonados”). La reflexión busca una síntesis entre el enfoque geográfico y el de la ecología política para esclarecer cómo se proyectan las relaciones de poder entre los diferentes actores que, desde múltiples escalas, actúan en un territorio. Para comprobar esta hipótesis, se propone comparar dos territorios distintos como la Comunidad Autónoma de Castilla y León, en España, y la Región del Biobío, en Chile, analizando los distintos modelos que han orientado el aprovechamiento forestal en estas regiones.

    Abstract Chestnut cultivation is a type of traditional centennial exploitation in southern areas of Extremadura. Currently, chestnut is in danger of extinction due to the effects of climate change, some diseases (e.g. Cryphonectria parasitica) and land mismanagement. The high temporal variability of rainfall leads to soil erosion in chestnut cultivation. New forms of management are proposed to try, among other things, to reduce soil losses. This study quantifies soil losses in areas under tree canopies and open areas considering two different age plantations; 1990s and 1960s. To achieve the proposed goal 18 erosion plots were installed as paired plots under tree canopies and open areas in both plantations. The total amount of rainfall per event, tree cover, bare soil, runoff coefficient and sediment concentration were also measured in every plot. The results showed that the highest percentage of bare soil (> 45%) coincides with the period of greatest tree cover (> 75%). The open areas and the youngest plantation showed soil losses higher than the areas under the tree and the oldest plantation. In addition, soil losses increase as higher percentages of bare soil are recorded. We conclude that the size of the trees and a better soil stability in older plantations help reduce soil losses.

    Authors: Ilyana Jalaluddin;

    This study focuses on rural area learners’ learning process, and the teacher’s roles in developing the rural learners’ writing skills. Specifically, this study aims to investigate how teacher assists the students in learning to write, and following that, this study then aims to understand how teacher’s assistance affects students’ writing skills. The participants of this study consisted of three fourth former students and their English teacher. In order to gather information about the teacher’s assistance and its effect on learners’ writing skills, two types of data were collected. Firstly, non-participant classroom observation was carried out for six months where the researcher observed and recorded each activity in the classroom. Secondly, all of the students’ written works during each activity were compiled and the content was analyzed to see the changes. One essay entitled ‘My father’ will be used for the discussion of this paper. Finding showed that students managed to improve their sentences in the essay once the teacher assisted them through class discussion and individual comments.

    Authors: Ahmad Zubir Ibrahim;

    Authors: Massimiliano Farris;

    En territorios rurales marginales de Chile y España, los recursos silvícolas concurren en la producción de riqueza, aunque vinculados a modelos de desarrollo aparentemente distintos. En Chile, se asocian a una idea de desarrollo centrado en la figura del “emprendedor” que con su esfuerzo logra volver productiva la “naturaleza” a través de un uso intensivo del territorio. En España, las estrategias de desarrollo apuntan a un aprovechamiento “sostenible” del recurso forestal, junto con una “puesta en valor” del patrimonio territorial. En el texto se cuestiona la idea de “desarrollo”, asociada a la dimensión “local” y “sustentable”, hipotetizando que modelos distintos de desarrollo responden a una similar visión dual y mercantilista del territorio (“territorio eficiente vs. territorio improductivo; “puesta en valor” de los recursos vs. recursos "abandonados”). La reflexión busca una síntesis entre el enfoque geográfico y el de la ecología política para esclarecer cómo se proyectan las relaciones de poder entre los diferentes actores que, desde múltiples escalas, actúan en un territorio. Para comprobar esta hipótesis, se propone comparar dos territorios distintos como la Comunidad Autónoma de Castilla y León, en España, y la Región del Biobío, en Chile, analizando los distintos modelos que han orientado el aprovechamiento forestal en estas regiones.

    Abstract Chestnut cultivation is a type of traditional centennial exploitation in southern areas of Extremadura. Currently, chestnut is in danger of extinction due to the effects of climate change, some diseases (e.g. Cryphonectria parasitica) and land mismanagement. The high temporal variability of rainfall leads to soil erosion in chestnut cultivation. New forms of management are proposed to try, among other things, to reduce soil losses. This study quantifies soil losses in areas under tree canopies and open areas considering two different age plantations; 1990s and 1960s. To achieve the proposed goal 18 erosion plots were installed as paired plots under tree canopies and open areas in both plantations. The total amount of rainfall per event, tree cover, bare soil, runoff coefficient and sediment concentration were also measured in every plot. The results showed that the highest percentage of bare soil (> 45%) coincides with the period of greatest tree cover (> 75%). The open areas and the youngest plantation showed soil losses higher than the areas under the tree and the oldest plantation. In addition, soil losses increase as higher percentages of bare soil are recorded. We conclude that the size of the trees and a better soil stability in older plantations help reduce soil losses.

    Authors: Ilyana Jalaluddin;
