By its geographical location, the rural area from Dobrudgea has a diversified tourism potential, provided by the contrasting natural environmental factors, ranging from the oldest to the youngest relief units, natural protected areas, balneary resources and cultural, historical, religious sites, as well as multicultural local customs and traditions of the rural area. This potential can be used under various forms in the rural area: cultural tourism, historical tourism, religious tourism, ecotourism, fishing tourism or bird-watching tourism, as well as other kinds of rural tourism. By linking these tourism resources and tourism forms, tourism routes can result, which, together with the local customs, traditions and cuisine may contribute to the social and economic development of Dobrudgea’s rural area, through sustainable tourism as an alternative to seasonal seashore tourism.

New Ruralism represents an effort to extend the familiar principles of New Urbanism to non-urban areas with an emphasis on farmland protection. Various sources dealing with New Ruralism (mainly from the North American context) were analyzed using the desk research method. The regulatory and economic instruments of land development were described in detail. Using the example of New Ruralism, it was shown that economic instruments can appropriately complement standard landuse planning instruments even in the case of rural and agricultural planning. This finding can be an inspiration for rural planning in our environment.

Universities provided qualified labour force, yield novel research solutions and act as hubs for entrepreneurial activity in urban areas. In this article, we show that even though most of the universities are concentrated in large urban centres and capital regions, many of them are located in small rural areas and have a profound effect on them. We also demonstrate the impact of universities on the sustainable development which is done through the sustainable education as well as the R&D approaches. These effects are very relevant for the co-designing of sustainable rural areas that can follow the principles of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and the green policies imposed by the majority of the local and central governments around the world.

Transport investment is frequently advocated as having the double virtue of achieving both economic growth and territorial cohesion. The idea is that improving the accessibility of lagging regions to cities increases the attractiveness of those regions for people and businesses. However, transport is only one of the factors affecting local development and there is no consensus on its net effect on population growth. The large scale of public funding allocated to motorway investment since the accession to the European Union in 1986 makes Portugal an ideal case study to examine the potential effect of improved road accessibility on the development of lagging rural areas. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between rural population change and road accessibility to the urban hierarchy (i.e. cities of different sizes) between 1991 and 2011. Regression analyses showed that rural population growth is negatively associated with road distance and travel time to the urban hierarchy, notably to medium-sized cities (20,000-99,999 inhabitants). This suggests that medium-sizecities play an important role in supporting population growth in their rural hinterlands. Robustness tests confirmed the validity of these findings. There is no evidence of nonlinearities in the magnitude of the effect between accessible and remote rural areas, which may be partially related to the relatively small size of the country.

This primary research assesses the effects of farmers' socioeconomic characteristics and some infrastructure costs on farmers' income in two local government areas of Lagos State. The descriptive statistics show that the majority of farmers in the areas are educated and married. Farmers in the areas generate more income from the farming than non-farming activities. The OLS regression results show that the age of farmers, educational attainment and the presence of agricultural agencies positively influence farmers' income in the countryside. On the other hand, the findings show an inverse relationship between the cost of basic rural infrastructure (i.e. water and electricity) and farmers' income in the areas. For the income of the farmers in the countryside to be improved, the local councils should educate rural farmers on extension services for sustainable farming and best practices. Additionally, critical rural infrastructure, such as water and electricity should be provided at affordable rates. Arguably, this could not only improve farmers' earnings, but also make the communities attractive to the rural farmers and young people, and stabilize rural populations.

The aim of this thesis is the development of the village Stenovice from the 19th century to the present. From the theoretical point of view the terms: urban area, sub urbanization and village are discussed. The thesis offers comparison of different scientists and their point of views of the terms mentioned above. The history of the village Stenovice is mentioned as well as physical geography of the village. The main chapter of the thesis is dedicated to the census from 1880, 1910, 2001 and 2011. The chapter about changes of the structure of the inhabitants deals with comparing of the economical situation and the natural exchange of the inhabitants at the end of 19th century and the beginning of the 21st century. The village is compared with Pilsen region and with the district Pilsen-south. Finally, the thesis presents the urban development of the village Stenovice.
