description Publicationkeyboard_double_arrow_right Article 2009Publisher:Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Authors: Jan Peters; J. Morimoto; Russ Tedrake; Nicholas Roy;Jan Peters; J. Morimoto; Russ Tedrake; Nicholas Roy;Creating autonomous robots that can learn to act in unpredictable environments has been a long-standing goal of robotics, artificial intelligence, and the cognitive sciences. In contrast, current commercially available industrial and service robots mostly execute fixed tasks and exhibit little adaptability. To bridge this gap, machine learning offers a myriad set of methods, some of which have already been applied with great success to robotics problems. As a result, there is an increasing interest in machine learning and statistics within the robotics community. At the same time, there has been a growth in the learning community in using robots as motivating applications for new algorithms and formalisms.

Kawamura; E. Prassler; G. Muscato; P. Fiorini; T. Sato; R. Rusu;We may think that robots were invented to serve humans. Consequently, what is the disparity between the terms service robots and service robotics? Although this is a valid point, to distinguish from the initial wide usage of robots in manufacturing, the term service robotics was invented to show robotics technologies and applications in nonmanufacturing areas. The term service robots was intended to highlight emerging markets for the new types of robots. This was the motivation behind initiating the Service Robots Technical Committee (TC) within the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) in 1995. During the same period, the term intelligent robots appeared in the literature (see [1]) to represent the new trend away from the narrow focus of the robotics community on the control of the robotic manipulators.

Bals; M. Otter; J. Stelter;Gerd Hirzinger; J. Bals; M. Otter; J. Stelter; This paper discusses the joint venture between the German Aerospace Center (DLR) Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics and the German robot manufacturer, KUKA Robotics GmbH, for the successful transfer of the knowledge in robot dynamics and control, human robot interaction, and sensory feedback as originally developed for the remote control of space robots to industrial robotics. This technology transfer venture aims to promote more industrial sensory feedback applications with particular focus on the fusion of vision and force, while merging service and industrial robots into the future. As such, the aim is to transfer new robonaut technologies and ultra-lightweight, torque-controlled, kinematically redundant arms with multifingered articulated hands into the terrestrial robot industry.

This "self-reconfigurable (SR) robot" exemplifies a new trend in robotics, indeed, we can now build various kinds of SR robots with off-the-shelf technologies of processors, actuators, and sensors. These SR robots, based on modern mechatronics, are still not as adaptable as the liquid metal robot in The Terminator 2 but are just as flexible as any conventional robots.

The COVID-19 pandemic is forcing a rethink in robotics. In the form it is known today, robotics has been the prerogative of a broad community of insiders. But now, in the wreckage left behind by COVID-19, a new era is beginning. What does it hold? During the pandemic, increasing numbers of people had manifested the hope that robotics might bring novel solutions. And this interest has emerged beyond the usual boundaries of the experts or technology enthusiasts. This provides an opportunity to reinforce the community of people involved in the process of innovation. By involving citizens, the community becomes more comprehensive (that is, plural and diverse). This broadening will involve more practical knowledge and therefore produce better robots of many shapes and functions. If progress is possible in the industry, why not in the hospitals, shopping malls, restaurants, hotels, and schools? What is more, the approach endorsed by the Italian robotics community during the lockdown has established a new cooperation among those who labor with robots, and the professionals who work in hospitals, which is bound to last a long time. As a major impact, this experience will enable an improvement on science's relationship with and for society. This may entail a further shift: to value more scientific knowledge and scientific literacy.
