AbstractManagement and organizational scholars have paid increasing attention to the interconnections between digital transformation and innovation management in the last decade. However, a highly fragmented understanding of this topic is what we are left with so far. In this editorial, we suggest an approach to open up the black box of the interplay between digital transformation and innovation management by providing a framework that identifies three levels of analyisis (i.e., macro, meso, and micro) along which existing and future research on the topic can be organized. This model encourages scholars to conduct theoretical and empirical studies on how digital transformation affects ecosystems’ structure and governance, how industries and firms compete and organize for innovation in a digitalized world, how the processes for developing new products and services change under the effect of digital technologies, and the implications of digital transformation on managing people and teams involved in the innovation process, among the other topics. We also provide a synthesis of the eight papers published in the Special Issue that this editorial introduces and develop an agenda for future research that will hopefully contribute to encourage and shape future scholarly efforts into this field.

Part 12: Pathways and Tools for Digital Innovation Hubs; International audience; Digital Innovation Hubs (DIHs) are ecosystems sustaining European enterprises to overcome innovation hurdles and push Europe as a world leading innovator in the Fourth Industrial Revolution context. They operate as a one-stop-shop, characterized by four main functionalities, i.e., test before invest, support to find investments, innovation ecosystem and networking, skills and training. These functionalities are addressed through the delivery of a set of services, grouped in the five macro-classes of services of the Data-driven Business-Ecosystem-Skills-Technology (D-BEST) model, a reference model able to configure the service portfolios of DIHs and to model collaborative networks in the I4.0 era. The model has been used in the DIH4CPS project toclassify the extant service portfolios of the DIHs belonging to the network, to detect which new services should be provided in the future by the network of DIHs, and to identify opportunities for collaboration among DIHs fostering the creation of a pan-European DIH. However, to support an easier codification of such dynamics directly involving companies in the innovative DIHs ecosystems, a Customer Journey(CJ) analysis method has still to be built. This paper presents the D-BEST-based CJ analysis method, identifying typical digital transformation processes for the two main categories of customers of a DIH, Technology Users and Technology Providers.

Digital Innovation Hubs (DIHs) aim to regionally support companies in the development of new products, processes, or services, providing access to advanced technologies. Since DIHs have to be financially sustainable, it is important to discuss which business models are put forwardin such complex arrangements. Ourmain goal is to analysehow DIHs,specialized in Industry 4.0 technologies and services, create, offer, and capture value. The research was conducted through a documentary analysis of reports about DIHs’ Business Models, generated by three European initiatives (encompassing more than 300 DIHs). Results demonstrate thatone Business Model does not fit all, since regional characteristics, which vary among different DIH’s, are the maindrivers to define value creation, offer and capture. This work aims to provide DIH managers insights to help them develop sustainability strategies.

International audience; In today's manufacturing domain, companies need to be able to adopt digital technologies, joining the Industry 4.0 paradigm and, more in particular, the Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) revolution. However, several hurdles have been detected for companies' digital transition. Needing help to become more competitive by improving their business/production processes by means of digital technology, Digital Innovation Hubs (DIHs) have been identified as a strategic means to support companies' digital transformation, especially SMEs, and foster digital technologies' adoption in their business. However, the set of services provided by DIHs and composing their service portfolios still need to be clearly defined and adequately grouped to be then extensively considered in the DIHs. This paper presents a literature review to provide theoretical evidence and to raise the need to extend the traditional Ecosystem-Technology-Business (ETB)-based service portfolio of DIHs with two further dimensions: skills and data. This paves the way to the final consolidation, application and adoption of the forthcoming Data-driven Business-Ecosystem-Skills-Technology (D-BEST) reference model aimed at configuring DIHs' service portfolio and instantiating them from an Industry 4.0 digital perspective.

There is a need for explaining how to go omni-channel and for exploring the ways to address challenges faced when implementing an omni-channel strategy (Brynjolfsson et al. 2013). This chapter proposes to address this call by investigating an in-depth single case study of an eyewear retailer Direct Optic. By observing the orchestration of the convergence of bricks and clicks in an omni-channel perspective, this chapter answers the following research questions: (RQ1) What is the process of moving towards an omni-channel strategy? (RQ2) What are the challenges faced in this process? This research provides one of the first in-depth case studies on how a multi-channel retailer moves towards an omni-channel strategy. This research contributes in clarifying the differences between multi-channel, cross-channel, and omni-channel strategies. We also underline that moving from a multi- to an omni-channel strategy first involves organizational changes, then followed by operational evolutions. Omni-channel strategies can be considered as the optimum situation of the cross-omni-channel continuum, meaning that all the identified challenges have been overcome when reaching the extreme end of the continuum.

Following this, we wonder how paradoxes and Digital Transformation interact and unfold. We investigate the case of a records management company engaging with digitizing and digitalizing of their offers. We implement 23 hours of semi-directive interviews, two site visits and written sources analyses that we code thematically. We find that paradoxes of Digital Transformation can be managed leveraging specificities of digital technologies. Organizing and performing paradoxes are addressed through temporal and geographical splitting strategies, relying on external and internal skills, before developing the resources to hire. National-level reflection complements the strategy. Performing is demonstrated via expertise-oriented online and offline communication supports. The paradox of belonging, fuelled by splitting strategies is the most difficult to manage, addressed through reframing discourses, posters representing the human stories behind the file and expertise-raising actions. On the basis of these dynamics, we suggest an exploratory model.
