This is the accepted version of the article "New tree monitoring systems: from Industry 4.0 to Nature 4.0" published as final paper in Annals of Silvicultural Research Volume 43, Issue 2, 2019, Pages 84-88, http://dx.doi.org/10.12899/asr-1847 Abstract - Recently, Internet of Things (IoT) technologies have grown rapidly and represent now a unique opportunity to improve our environmental monitoring capabilities at extremely low costs. IoT is a new system of thinking in which objects, animals or people are equipped with unique identifiers and transfer data to a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. IoT has evolved from the convergence of wireless technologies, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and the Internet. The development of these technologies in environmental monitoring domains allows real-time data transmission and numerous low-cost monitoring points. We have designed a new device, the TreeTalker©, which is capable of measuring water transport in trees, diametrical growth, spectral characteristics of leaves and microclimatic parameters and transmit data in semi-real time. Here we introduce the device’s features, provide an example of monitored data from a field test site and discuss the application of this new technology to tree monitoring in various contexts, from forest to urban green infrastructures management and ecological research.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is expected to reach its full potential through actually intelligent and autonomous cyber-physical devices and systems. Along this line, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is likely to be the best source of resources – such as algorithms, technologies, methodologies, and paradigms – enabling the development of next-generation “smart” devices and systems. In fact, the “IoT-AI” combination let us envision a cyber- physical scenario where devices compute while opportunistically interacting with each other, with human users, and with their surrounding environments in a dynamic, adaptive, and cognitive way. It is reasonable to expect that great benefits for the IoT can emerge by combining the whole spectrum of AI techniques with the various approaches used in the IoT to distribute data and computation and to exploit the interaction between multiple devices. For this reason, the AI&IoT Workshop aims to explore not only the adaptation of existing AI techniques to the IoT context, but also new specific and original approaches for the development of intelligent IoT ecosystems as well as new business models and relevant experiences from successful smart applications.

Many Internet of Things (IoT) applications are considered critical systems, and it is important to guarantee that such deployments are resilient to attacks. An attacker may use radio interference selectively to disrupt communication while minimising the risk of their detection. It is essential to identify such attacks in order to remove the threat. In this work, we propose a novel method of detecting targeted interference in a Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) network at the User Equipment (UE). NB-IoT is a recent Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) radio technology used to deploy IoT infrastructures at scale. Network performance data collected at the UE is used to reason about the current interference situation. Subframe loss rates within the downlink channel are monitored and used as input for a statistical anomaly detector. Our evaluation shows that the detector is able to distinguish targeted interference attacks from the impact of naturally occurring interference in cellular networks. This is important as naturally occurring interference requires a different response than targeted interference attacks.
