    Relation between tree density/ urbanization and mosquito populations in Houston, Texas. This was done using a GitHub program to map out tree density in Houston, Texas, and ArcGis to map out the mosquito populations dispersed across Houston, Texas. The GitHub code was used to measure the tree density and land cover in Houston Texas. This was possible thanks to a machine learning model program that took uploaded tree canopy pictures and predicted their height, density, and location. ArcGIS was used to create a base map of Houston, Texas that contained all mosquito data in that area from databases such as iNaturalist and GLOBE Mosquito Habitat Mapper.

    Annually, Spatial and Numeric Data Services (SANDS) receives 434 Digital Aerial Survey (DAS) datasets, in AutoCAD format, from the City of Calgary. Each dataset covers an Alberta Township System (ATS) section (Figure 1) and is made up of five layers containing “surface features and topography” information “derived from 1:5000 aerial photos”1. University of Calgary students regularly utilize these files in their research, however, in some cases they are looking for specific features covering an area much larger than an ATS section and in a more geographic information system (GIS) friendly format. To derive city wide products, from the DAS files, required reiterating through numerous geoprocessing operations. These repetitive and time consuming tasks were automated and accomplished within a day, using Python and ArcPy, instead of weeks if executed manually. The next section details the steps that were taken to create the outputs.

    Authors: Goes, Margarida; Oliveira, Henrique; Amado, João;

    O trabalho desenvolvido incidiu sobre todas as Freguesias do Distrito de Beja num total de 101. Os índices utilizados (que caracterizam a população idosa) foram: i. Índice de Dependência de Idosos (IDI) - relação entre o numero de idosos (população com 65 ou mais anos) e a população ativa (com idades compreendidas entre os 15 e os 64 anos); ii. Índice de Envelhecimento (IE) - relação entre o numero de idosos ( população com 65 ou mais anos de idade e o numero de jovens (população com idades compreendidas entre o 0 e os 14 anos); iii. Índice de Sustentabilidade Potencial (ISP) - relação entre a população em idade ativa (com idades compreendidas entre os 15 e os 64 anos) e a população idosa (com 65 ou mais anos de idade). Os três Índices indicados foram assim calculados com base nos censos do INE (1991, 2001 e 2011). Os limites administrativos das Freguesias do Distrito de Beja, foram extraídos da Carta Administrativa Oficial de Portu-gal (CAOP). O estudo recorre ao uso de metodologias baseadas em operadores de estatística espacial dos dados, tendo em conta a geografia da zona habitada pelos idosos, confrontando a distribuição geográfica da população idosa, com a distribuição geográfica das instituições de prestação de cuidados. Foram utilizadas funções disponibilizadas pelos sistemas de informação que utilizam técnicas de geoprocessamento, em particular, funções de proximidade (caso da determinação de áreas de influência) e funções de otimização em rede de acessos estruturada com base em modelo vetorial (especialmente orientada para a determinação de acessibilidades). A distribuição geográfica dos valores dos índices utilizados foi obtida pelo cálculo do centro geográfico médio (cgm) utilizando a média aritmética ponderada pelos valores atribuídos aos índices em estudo. A descrição quantitativa/qualitativa do padrão espacial observado, foi conseguida através da medição da autocorrelação espacial dos dados (IDI, IE e ISP), verificando a similaridade dos mesmos na sua vizinhança geográfica. Existem algumas métricas para avaliar a autocorrelação estatística de dados agregados, entre os quais se destaca o Índice Global de Moran (IGM) que caracteriza a hipótese nula de não existir um padrão (aglomerado ou disperso) e apresenta aproximadamente uma distribuição Gaussiana. Para o cálculo do IGM, foi necessário ter em consideração o relacionamento espacial (vizinhança) entre as entidades geográficas que foram identificadas no estudo, ou seja, as Freguesias consideradas como uma entidade do tipo "polígono". Para além da caracterização dos aglomerados proposta anteriormente, foi importante no âmbito da problemática da acessibilidade aos cuidados de saúde, conhecer a localização geográfica das principais Unidades de Saúde, nomeadamente, no caso do Distrito de Beja, a do HJJF que se encontra localizado no concelho de Beja, referencian-do-o quanto ao percurso rodoviário percorrido pelos utentes do Serviço Nacional de Saúde (SNS), aquando da sua deslocação do local onde habitam até à referida Unidade. Estuda-se, assim, a acessibilidade geográfica dos utentes do SNS, sob o ponto de vista de uma função de custo, em geral, ela mesma associada à minimização da função de custo adotada e que contém a variável em relação à qual se pretende obter um valor mínimo. Utiliza-se o processo de cálculo de otimização de percursos rodoviários, vulgarmente designados por análise de redes nos Sistemas de Informação Geográfica em que a variável a estudar é, em geral, a distância percorrida ou o tempo gasto no espaço geográfico percorrido. Esta análise usa como dado base uma rede rodoviária que interliga o local de origem e o destino a alcançar, recorrendo a um algoritmo de otimização para determinar o caminho mais curto entre dois pon-tos (origem e destino). No presente artigo, foram, assim, determinados os tempos de percurso (em minutos), cuja origem se localiza no cen-tro geográfico de cada centro habitacional correspondente à sede das Freguesias pertencentes ao Distrito de Beja, e o destino sempre referido em relação ao HJJF. Foram obtidos valores que variam entre os cinco minutos e os 112 (quase as duas horas), devido à dimensão e característica geográficas do Distrito. Toda a parte experimental do trabalho realizado neste artigo, foi efetuado em ambiente ArcGIS da ESRI, versão 9.3, recorrendo aos módulos Spatial Statistics e Network Analyst. The old world and the new world wine-making philosophies tried to explain wine quality with role of nature and organoleptic characteristics of the wine. Among the various environmental factors specifically, c1imate and soil are the most important factor on viticulture zoning due to its direct effect on wine development and wine quality. The implementation at locallevel of GIS (Geographic Information System) could play a key factor to define some parameters in order to create homogenous zones. Main objective of the work is create a thematic database with a GIS implementation that can have some innovative aspects based on geomorphological, climatic, soil and land use ofthe area. GIS is able to analyse, design and create a set of descriptive indicators ofterritories characteristics, using spatial interpolations to create specific maps of studi ed area. GIS tool some other data can be compared such as the immediate characteristics of grapes, in order to understand the best suitable areas for the production of quality wines. According to data, the GIS tool has defined some parameters based on geomorphology and pedology, c1imate and other more specific measurements such as Winkler index, Huglin index and Evapotranspiration. As a result it allow us to get a computerized recording ofthe zoning, shows the crossing of different levels of information, such as texture, and c1imate and some other information. The study has been carried out in Italy, in Puglia Region. In the AOC "Gioia del Colle" on Primitivo variety. Results of the GIS tool, shows that some areas of the denomination of ori gin can bave similar characteristics in terms of climate values, soil quality and cultivar characteristics. These information have been confirmed from Winkler index, Huglin index and Evapotranspiration measurements .. Thirty-two fields have been selected according to density and age and some chemical and physical parameters have been analysed in 2013 in order to characterize their poliphenolic composition.

    California is located in one of the Earth's most tectonically active areas, where San Andreas fault system that crosses the state has provoked a series of major earthquakes. In addition, San Francisco has experienced a long history of such phenomena that almost destroyed the entire city in the past. In this paper we investigate the hydrological network and the tectonic setting of the San Francisco bay area (fig. 1) which includes a vast number of lakes, rivers and structural systems, among which the most tectonic active parts of San Andreas Fault, making it a quite interest case study. In order to achieve this information, a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of San Francisco bay area was processed through ArcGIS and MATLAB softwares which allowed to obtain results such the hydrological network and fault system, while extracted maps and plots provided more specific information. These output showed the composite catchment of the study area which is a result of its complex and dense tectonic background that triggers a lot of seismic breakups.

    The recent developments in earth sciences software are mostly related to the extension allowing graphical representations of volumes and geological bodies. In this paper, we present a tool for 3D visualization of landslide body using only ArcGIS© software and its 3rd party extensions. The model was built using existing geological surveys, DEMs, borehole logs and site investigation data. The case study chosen to illustrate the method is the Umka landslide (Belgrade, Serbia), an area with relatively simple geology, but with deep seated landslide and with block-translational sliding mechanism.

  • Authors: Truong, Renna;

    Authors: Goes, Margarida; Oliveira, Henrique; Amado, João;

    O trabalho desenvolvido incidiu sobre todas as Freguesias do Distrito de Beja num total de 101. Os índices utilizados (que caracterizam a população idosa) foram: i. Índice de Dependência de Idosos (IDI) - relação entre o numero de idosos (população com 65 ou mais anos) e a população ativa (com idades compreendidas entre os 15 e os 64 anos); ii. Índice de Envelhecimento (IE) - relação entre o numero de idosos ( população com 65 ou mais anos de idade e o numero de jovens (população com idades compreendidas entre o 0 e os 14 anos); iii. Índice de Sustentabilidade Potencial (ISP) - relação entre a população em idade ativa (com idades compreendidas entre os 15 e os 64 anos) e a população idosa (com 65 ou mais anos de idade). Os três Índices indicados foram assim calculados com base nos censos do INE (1991, 2001 e 2011). Os limites administrativos das Freguesias do Distrito de Beja, foram extraídos da Carta Administrativa Oficial de Portu-gal (CAOP). O estudo recorre ao uso de metodologias baseadas em operadores de estatística espacial dos dados, tendo em conta a geografia da zona habitada pelos idosos, confrontando a distribuição geográfica da população idosa, com a distribuição geográfica das instituições de prestação de cuidados. Foram utilizadas funções disponibilizadas pelos sistemas de informação que utilizam técnicas de geoprocessamento, em particular, funções de proximidade (caso da determinação de áreas de influência) e funções de otimização em rede de acessos estruturada com base em modelo vetorial (especialmente orientada para a determinação de acessibilidades). A distribuição geográfica dos valores dos índices utilizados foi obtida pelo cálculo do centro geográfico médio (cgm) utilizando a média aritmética ponderada pelos valores atribuídos aos índices em estudo. A descrição quantitativa/qualitativa do padrão espacial observado, foi conseguida através da medição da autocorrelação espacial dos dados (IDI, IE e ISP), verificando a similaridade dos mesmos na sua vizinhança geográfica. Existem algumas métricas para avaliar a autocorrelação estatística de dados agregados, entre os quais se destaca o Índice Global de Moran (IGM) que caracteriza a hipótese nula de não existir um padrão (aglomerado ou disperso) e apresenta aproximadamente uma distribuição Gaussiana. Para o cálculo do IGM, foi necessário ter em consideração o relacionamento espacial (vizinhança) entre as entidades geográficas que foram identificadas no estudo, ou seja, as Freguesias consideradas como uma entidade do tipo "polígono". Para além da caracterização dos aglomerados proposta anteriormente, foi importante no âmbito da problemática da acessibilidade aos cuidados de saúde, conhecer a localização geográfica das principais Unidades de Saúde, nomeadamente, no caso do Distrito de Beja, a do HJJF que se encontra localizado no concelho de Beja, referencian-do-o quanto ao percurso rodoviário percorrido pelos utentes do Serviço Nacional de Saúde (SNS), aquando da sua deslocação do local onde habitam até à referida Unidade. Estuda-se, assim, a acessibilidade geográfica dos utentes do SNS, sob o ponto de vista de uma função de custo, em geral, ela mesma associada à minimização da função de custo adotada e que contém a variável em relação à qual se pretende obter um valor mínimo. Utiliza-se o processo de cálculo de otimização de percursos rodoviários, vulgarmente designados por análise de redes nos Sistemas de Informação Geográfica em que a variável a estudar é, em geral, a distância percorrida ou o tempo gasto no espaço geográfico percorrido. Esta análise usa como dado base uma rede rodoviária que interliga o local de origem e o destino a alcançar, recorrendo a um algoritmo de otimização para determinar o caminho mais curto entre dois pon-tos (origem e destino). No presente artigo, foram, assim, determinados os tempos de percurso (em minutos), cuja origem se localiza no cen-tro geográfico de cada centro habitacional correspondente à sede das Freguesias pertencentes ao Distrito de Beja, e o destino sempre referido em relação ao HJJF. Foram obtidos valores que variam entre os cinco minutos e os 112 (quase as duas horas), devido à dimensão e característica geográficas do Distrito. Toda a parte experimental do trabalho realizado neste artigo, foi efetuado em ambiente ArcGIS da ESRI, versão 9.3, recorrendo aos módulos Spatial Statistics e Network Analyst. O Livro de actas integral está disponível no repositório da Universidade de Évora através do seguinte URL:https://dspace.uevora.pt/rdpc/bitstream/10174/10861/1/CIEG2012_livro_atas.pdf
